You can often relax wrinkles without a steamer: if the pants’ care label allows tumble drying, run them briefly with a clean, moist towel, then remove and hang them promptly. If dryer heat is not allowed, lightly mist the fabric with water, smooth it by hand and hang it to dry. These methods may soften wrinkles, but a sharp, set-in crease may remain.
Choose a method that fits the pants
Check the garment care label before adding moisture or using a dryer. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says care labels must provide care instructions and warnings about conditions that could harm a garment. Its guidance defines “No heat” as operating the dryer without heat and “Do not iron” as an instruction not to smooth or finish the item with an iron. Follow the label and your dryer’s manual; Frigidaire likewise advises choosing a cycle and temperature based on garment-care instructions.

Use a dryer and a moist towel for dryer-safe pants
- Read the care label and confirm that tumble drying is allowed. If it specifies a temperature or cycle limitation, follow it.
- Put the pants in the dryer with a clean hand towel that is moist, not soaking wet.
- Run a short cycle at a label-appropriate temperature. Whirlpool gives roughly 10–15 minutes as general guidance for this method; it is not a guaranteed duration for every fabric or dryer.
- Take the pants out as soon as the cycle ends. While they are warm, smooth the legs and seams by hand, then hang them so they do not cool in a heap.
Whirlpool explains that moisture and heat can help relax fabric fibers, while noting that delicate garments may require lower heat. Do not use medium or high heat simply because it appears in a general example: the garment label takes precedence.
Mist and smooth pants when avoiding the dryer
- Hang the pants and lightly mist the wrinkled areas with water. Aim for a light dampness rather than soaking the fabric.
- Smooth the cloth with your hands, gently drawing it taut and straightening the legs and seams.
- Leave the pants hanging until they are dry.
The FTC’s care-label definition of “Smooth by hand” is to remove wrinkles and straighten seams and facings by hand while the garment is wet. If you add anything to the water, test it first on a hidden area: spray mixtures can spot some fabrics.

Try bathroom steam as a travel-friendly fallback
Hang the pants in the bathroom while running a hot shower, placing them where shower spray cannot reach them. Let the humid air reach the cloth, then smooth the legs by hand and leave the pants hanging to finish drying. Whirlpool cautions that this approach may not work well on severe wrinkles or certain fabrics, so treat it as an attempt to relax wrinkles rather than a dependable fix for a sharp crease.
Use wrinkle-release spray only if it suits the fabric
A commercial wrinkle-release spray is optional. Follow its own instructions and spot-test a hidden part of the pants before treating a visible area. Downy’s directions for its Wrinkle Releaser say to spray the outside of the fabric from 8 inches away in a sweeping motion until it is just slightly damp; its guidance says to use more for heavy fabrics or severe wrinkles. That is product-specific advice, not a universal amount for every spray or garment.

Whirlpool also describes a do-it-yourself mixture of distilled water and a small amount of liquid fabric softener, but advises testing a hidden area for spotting. Do not assume that mixture is suitable for every fabric; plain water is the simpler option when you are unsure.

Light methods can relax fabric, but they do not guarantee removal of a deep, pressed-in crease. If wrinkles remain, avoid escalating to heat or ironing unless the care label permits it. In particular, do not use dryer heat when the label says “No heat,” and do not iron pants marked “Do not iron.”
