To play TV sound through a soundbar, receiver, or wireless speaker, first identify a connection both devices support: HDMI ARC/eARC, optical (TOSLINK), analogue audio, or Bluetooth. Connect the hardware, select the matching TV audio-output option, choose the same input on the speaker, and raise its volume. HDMI ARC/eARC is usually the most convenient wired choice because one cable can carry sound and, when HDMI-CEC is enabled, allow compatible remote control. Optical is a reliable fallback, while Bluetooth avoids cables but depends on TV and speaker compatibility.

Which TV audio connection should you use?

Use the highest-priority option that both your TV and external speaker support. The labels and menu names vary by model, but the basic sequence is always the same: connect the correct port, select that output in the TV, select the corresponding input on the soundbar or receiver, and check volume.

Connection What you need Why choose it Limitations to check
HDMI ARC/eARC TV HDMI port marked ARC or eARC, compatible HDMI cable, and a soundbar or receiver with an ARC/eARC input Usually the simplest wired setup; HDMI-CEC can let compatible equipment share power and volume commands Both devices must support the same ARC/eARC standard; the cable must be in the labelled port, not an ordinary HDMI input
Optical TOSLINK optical cable and matching optical ports Dependable fallback when ARC/eARC is unavailable No HDMI-CEC control path; the TV and speaker must both be set to optical/digital audio
Analogue audio A compatible analogue output on the TV and input on the speaker, plus the correct cable Works with equipment that lacks HDMI ARC/eARC and optical Many newer TVs do not provide an analogue output, and connector types differ by model
Bluetooth A TV and speaker that support compatible Bluetooth audio profiles No cable between the TV and speaker Pairing, nearby-device interference, wireless range, and profile compatibility can prevent a connection

Before buying a cable or changing settings, look at the labels beside the TV’s ports and the soundbar’s inputs. A port labelled only “HDMI” is not automatically an ARC port.

What should you check before changing the TV setting?

  • Confirm the TV, soundbar, receiver, or speaker is powered on and that the speaker is not muted.
  • Read the labels on both devices. For HDMI, identify the TV port marked ARC or eARC; for optical, identify Optical, Digital Audio Out, or TOSLINK.
  • Keep the speaker’s remote or control app available so you can select its HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, analogue, or Bluetooth input after connecting it.
  • If you plan to use HDMI, check whether the TV calls HDMI-CEC by a brand-specific name. ARC audio control commonly depends on CEC being enabled.
  • Expect menu wording to differ by model and software version. If the path below is not present, open the TV manufacturer’s manual and search for “audio output,” “sound out,” “speakers,” or “CEC.”

How do you connect a soundbar with HDMI ARC or eARC?

Connect the soundbar or receiver to the TV’s HDMI port labelled ARC or eARC, enable HDMI-CEC when required, then choose HDMI ARC/eARC or Audio system in the TV’s sound menu. Finish by selecting the matching HDMI input on the soundbar.

  1. Turn off or put both devices in standby while making the connection.
  2. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the TV’s port marked ARC or eARC. Plug the other end into the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI port marked ARC or eARC.
  3. Turn on the TV and external speaker. On the speaker, select its HDMI ARC/eARC input if it does not switch automatically.
  4. Open the TV’s sound settings. Look for Audio Output, Sound Output, Speakers, or Sound Out, and choose HDMI ARC, eARC, Audio system, or the equivalent option.
  5. Open the TV’s HDMI-CEC or device-control setting and enable it if ARC control or device detection does not work. The name varies by manufacturer.
  6. Play a channel or app, then raise the soundbar volume. Confirm that the soundbar display shows its HDMI ARC/eARC input rather than optical, Bluetooth, or another source.

Do not connect the cable to a regular HDMI input on the TV. That port can carry picture from another device but will not necessarily return TV audio to the soundbar.

What is the Roku TV setup path?

On a Roku TV, connect the soundbar or receiver to the HDMI port labelled ARC or eARC. Open Settings > Audio > Audio Output and select eARC (or the available ARC option). If the devices do not respond to the TV remote, enable CEC at Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC).

How do you enable ARC on Fire TV?

First open Settings > Display & Sound > HDMI-CEC Devices and turn on the CEC control needed by your equipment. Then go to Settings > Display & Sound > ARC > Enable HDMI ARC. Select the soundbar’s HDMI ARC input after the TV detects it.

What is the Android TV or Google TV path?

Open Settings > Sound or Settings > Audio, then set Audio Output to HDMI ARC/eARC. CEC is usually under Inputs or an External devices control menu. The exact labels depend on the TV maker’s interface layered over Android TV or Google TV.

How do you set up a Samsung TV?

How do you set up an LG TV?

Turn on SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) for HDMI control. Then open Settings > Sound > Sound Out and choose Audio Out (Optical/HDMI ARC) or the relevant wireless-speaker option. If the soundbar remains silent, verify its volume is not set to zero; LG notes that a zero-volume setting can make a correct connection appear faulty.

How do you set up a Sony TV?

Enable BRAVIA Sync when the TV needs HDMI-CEC. Depending on the interface, open Display & Sound > Audio output > Speakers > Audio system or Sound > Speakers > Audio system. Set the soundbar or receiver to its HDMI ARC/eARC input.

How do you connect a TV to speakers with an optical cable?

Optical is the usual wired fallback when the TV or speaker lacks HDMI ARC/eARC. Connect a TOSLINK cable between the TV’s optical output and the soundbar’s optical input, select Optical or Digital Audio Out on the TV, and select Optical on the soundbar.

  1. Remove any protective caps from the ends of the optical cable.
  2. Insert one end into the TV port labelled Optical, Digital Audio Out, or a similar label. Insert the other end into the soundbar or receiver’s Optical In.
  3. Open the TV’s sound menu and choose Optical, Digital Audio Out, or the equivalent output.
  4. Use the soundbar’s input control to select Optical.
  5. Play audio and raise the soundbar volume. If the TV offers a choice between internal speakers and an external system, select the external or optical option.

Optical does not use the HDMI-CEC control path. If the TV remote does not change the soundbar’s volume after an optical setup, use the soundbar’s remote or its control app.

Can you use analogue audio instead?

Yes, if the TV has an analogue audio output and the speaker has a matching input. Sony lists an analogue audio cable as an option when the television provides an analogue output. Because connector types vary, match the TV’s labelled output to the speaker’s input and select the corresponding analogue or external-speaker option in the TV menu.

How do you pair Bluetooth speakers with a TV?

Bluetooth works only when the TV supports Bluetooth audio and the speaker supports a compatible audio profile. Sony identifies the A2DP profile as the requirement for Bluetooth TV audio in its connection guidance.

  1. Put the speaker into pairing mode according to its instructions. Leave it close to the TV during initial pairing.
  2. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones, tablets, or computers. A nearby device that reconnects first can prevent the TV from pairing.
  3. On the TV, open the Bluetooth or wireless-speaker device list. The menu may be under Sound, Audio Output, Remotes & accessories, or External devices.
  4. Select the speaker’s name and accept the pairing request.
  5. Return to the TV’s audio-output setting and choose the paired Bluetooth speaker or wireless-speaker option. Set the speaker to the appropriate wireless input if it has one.
  6. Play audio and check both the TV’s output volume and the speaker’s volume.

If the speaker does not appear, exit pairing mode and start it again, remove old pairings if the speaker’s memory is full, and repeat the search with nearby Bluetooth devices disabled.

Why is the soundbar connected but silent?

Most “connected but no sound” cases come from a wrong port, a mismatched input, disabled ARC/CEC, muted or zero volume, or an incomplete Bluetooth pairing. Work through the checks in this order so you change one variable at a time.

1. Verify the physical port

  • For HDMI, confirm the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC-labelled HDMI port and in the soundbar’s ARC/eARC port.
  • For optical, confirm both plugs are fully inserted and that the cable’s protective caps were removed.
  • For analogue, confirm the cable is in an audio output on the TV, not a headphone or unrelated service port, and in the correct input on the speaker.

2. Match the two input selections

The TV output and the soundbar input must describe the same connection. A TV set to HDMI ARC/eARC will be silent if the soundbar is listening to Optical; a TV set to Optical will be silent if the soundbar is on HDMI ARC/eARC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Re-enable the required control setting

Turn on HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC options when using HDMI. Roku notes that CEC is commonly needed for ARC control, and the brand-specific names include Anynet+, SIMPLINK, BRAVIA Sync, and Control other devices (CEC).

  • Clear Size Information: This HDMI cable has a total length of 14.76ft (450cm) and a middle cable length of 14.4ft (439cm). Please note that the cable is relatively short, making it ideal for devices that are placed close to each other, such as connecting a laptop to a nearby monitor or a game console to a TV in a compact space

4. Check volume and mute states

Raise the soundbar or receiver volume, cancel mute on both devices, and check that the TV has not selected an internal-speaker-only mode. On LG televisions, a volume value of zero can make an otherwise correct setup look broken.

5. Isolate the connection

Disconnect other audio devices temporarily, power-cycle the TV and soundbar, and test a built-in TV channel or app. This separates a source-specific problem from an output-setting problem.

6. Recover a failed Bluetooth pairing

Turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones and tablets, put the speaker back into pairing mode, remove the old TV entry from the speaker or TV if necessary, and search again. Keep the devices close until pairing succeeds; then move the speaker to its normal position and check whether the connection remains stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Check model-specific documentation

Menu paths change with TV model and software version. If an option is missing, search the manufacturer’s manual for the exact model and the terms “ARC,” “eARC,” “optical,” “audio output,” or “CEC” rather than assuming another model’s menu applies.

For long cable runs, measure the distance before buying and route the cable without sharp bends or strain at the connectors. For Bluetooth, account for range and nearby wireless interference, and place the speaker where it can maintain a clear connection to the TV.

What should you do when TV menus do not match these instructions?

Do not assume the television lacks the feature because a label differs. Manufacturers move settings between software versions, and some models use “Audio system,” “External speakers,” “Receiver,” or “Wireless speaker” instead of “HDMI ARC.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the main Settings menu and search for Sound, Audio, or Speakers.
  2. Within that area, locate Audio Output, Sound Output, or Sound Out.
  3. Select the output matching the cable or wireless method you actually connected.
  4. Search Inputs, External devices, or Device control for CEC if HDMI ARC/eARC is not detected.
  5. Use the exact model manual if the option is still absent; a port or feature may not exist on that model even when another television in the same product family has it.

How can you confirm the setup is working?

  • The external speaker shows the selected input rather than “No signal” or another source.
  • TV program or app audio is audible from the external speaker, not the TV’s internal speakers.
  • Volume changes behave as expected for your connection. HDMI ARC/eARC may pass compatible control commands when CEC is enabled; optical and analogue setups may require the speaker’s own remote.
  • Switching the TV off and on does not leave the soundbar on the wrong input. If it does, select the correct input manually and revisit CEC settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a receiver instead of a soundbar for TV audio?

Yes. The same ARC/eARC, optical, analogue, or Bluetooth procedure applies as long as the receiver has a matching input and the TV supports the selected output. Select the receiver’s corresponding source after changing the TV audio-output setting.

Why does my TV keep switching back to its internal speakers?

The TV may not be detecting the external device, or HDMI-CEC/ARC may be disabled. Recheck the ARC-labelled port, enable the TV’s CEC feature, and confirm the external unit is powered on before starting playback.

Can an optical cable be used if the TV has HDMI ARC?

Yes. Optical is a separate connection and can be used instead of ARC when both devices have optical ports. You must select Optical or Digital Audio Out on the TV and Optical on the speaker.

Why does my Bluetooth speaker not appear in the TV’s device list?

The speaker may not be in pairing mode, may already be connected to another nearby device, or may not support the TV’s Bluetooth audio profile. Disable Bluetooth on nearby phones, restart pairing, and verify that the TV and speaker support compatible audio profiles.

Do I need to change the TV’s audio format for external speakers?

Start with the TV’s default or automatic digital-audio setting and test playback. If a particular soundbar or receiver remains silent, consult both devices’ manuals for supported audio formats and the model-specific setting names rather than copying a setting from another TV.
