The most reliable way to manage a child’s AI chatbot use is to combine the chatbot’s own family settings with controls on every device they use. Link a parent account in ChatGPT, then use Apple Screen Time or Google Family Link to enforce app limits, schedules and blocking. Gemini access is switched on or off inside Family Link, while Microsoft Family Safety can block Copilot, restrict hours and disable features such as image generation, voice mode or group chat.
These tools limit access; they do not make an AI system consistently safe or accurate. Set a daily allowance and quiet hours, review microphone and camera permissions, explain what monitoring does, and teach your child to verify important answers.

Why do AI chatbot controls need both account and device settings?
Account controls govern what happens inside a particular chatbot. Device controls govern when the app or website can be opened at all. Using only one layer leaves an obvious gap: a child could reach a different chatbot, use a browser instead of an app, or continue on another device.
Start with the chatbot account when it offers a family link, then apply operating-system limits to the phone, tablet, computer or Chromebook. Keep the settings aligned with a written family agreement so your child knows what is limited, when access is allowed and how to request an exception.

How do I link a parent and teen account in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT’s parental controls are configured from the parent and teen accounts. OpenAI says the link lets parents manage selected settings and schedules, but it does not provide routine access to a teen’s conversations, chat history or real-time activity.
- Sign in to the parent ChatGPT account.
- Open Settings, then choose Parental controls.
- Follow the linking flow for the teen’s ChatGPT account and complete the account-connection steps shown on screen.
- Review the settings and schedules available to the parent account, choosing limits that match your family agreement.
- Repeat the review on the teen’s device so both of you can see which account is linked and what rules are active.
What the ChatGPT link does not do
Account linking is not a conversation-monitoring feed. The OpenAI Help Center states: “Linking accounts does not give a parent or guardian access to a teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity.” If you need to know how much time is being spent in the app, pair the account link with Screen Time or Family Link on the device.

How should I handle a ChatGPT schedule?
Use the schedule for predictable boundaries such as homework, meals, bedtime and overnight hours. Because the account link manages selected settings rather than acting as a complete device lock, set a corresponding app or category limit at the operating-system level.
How do I set AI-app limits on an iPhone, iPad or Mac?
Apple’s controls are managed through Family Sharing and Screen Time. The family organizer can set app or category allowances, schedules, app and website restrictions, and content and privacy limits for a child’s Apple devices.
- Set up or open Family Sharing and select the child’s name.
- Open Screen Time for that child.
- Use App Limits to select a specific chatbot or an app category and assign an allowance.
- Use the Screen Time schedule to define periods when apps are unavailable, such as overnight or during school.
- Open the app and website restriction controls to limit chatbot websites that can be reached through a browser.
- Review Content & Privacy Restrictions, including whether new apps can be installed and whether microphone, camera or contact access is permitted.
Choosing an Apple allowance
Use a separate allowance when your child needs a chatbot for school but should have a different limit for entertainment apps. A category allowance is useful when several AI apps are installed and you want one shared ceiling. Explain whether the allowance applies to one app, an entire category or a website as well as an app.
Use downtime for quiet hours, not just bedtime
A Screen Time schedule can cover school lessons, family meals, evening wind-down and sleep. If a child needs a temporary exception for an assignment, agree on the end time before granting it and restore the normal schedule afterward.

- Open Family Link on the parent device and select the child.
- Open the controls for the child’s device and set a daily device limit.
- Configure School Time or Downtime for the hours when chatbot access should be paused.
- Open the app controls, choose the chatbot, and set a per-app limit or block it.
- Review the list of installed apps and apply the same rule to any alternate chatbot or browser the child can use.
- Check the child’s ChromeOS devices as well as Android phones and tablets so the schedule is consistent.
Daily device limits versus per-app limits
A daily device limit controls total screen use. A per-app limit is more precise: it reserves a defined amount of time for an AI chatbot without consuming the entire device allowance. Use both when the child needs the device for schoolwork but should not spend unlimited time chatting.
When to use School Time and Downtime
Use School Time for the recurring school-day window and Downtime for overnight or other recurring quiet periods. If your child’s timetable changes, update the schedule rather than relying on reminders that can be ignored.
How do I turn Gemini access on or off for a supervised child?
Gemini access for a supervised child is managed in Family Link, not in a separate time-limit screen inside Gemini.
- Open Family Link and select the child.
- Choose Controls.
- Open Gemini, then Gemini Apps.
- Switch access on or off.
- Use Family Link’s daily, School Time, Downtime and per-app controls to add a time boundary when access is on.
Google warns that “Our filters try to limit inappropriate content from appearing, but they’re not perfect.” Treat the switch as an access control, not a guarantee that every response is suitable. Continue to supervise use, especially for younger children, and teach them to stop and ask an adult when an answer is disturbing, confusing or unsafe.
How can I block or restrict Microsoft Copilot?
Microsoft says Family Safety or device settings can block Copilot, restrict the hours when it can be used and limit image generation, voice mode or group chat.
- Open the child’s Microsoft family settings or the relevant device settings.
- Choose the Copilot app or service in the available app controls.
- Block access entirely, or set the allowed hours to match your family schedule.
- Where feature controls are offered, limit image generation, voice mode and group chat separately.
- Check the setting after a Copilot update or a device change, because feature availability can vary by account and device.
Microsoft’s support guidance notes that “Your parent or guardian may be able to manage how you use Copilot.” That wording reflects an important limitation: the exact controls shown can depend on the child’s account, device and Microsoft family configuration.
Which controls should I use for each platform?
The table separates the main control points so you can combine them instead of expecting one setting to do everything.

How should I write family rules for AI chatbot use?
Technical limits work better when the child understands the reason for them. Keep the agreement short enough to remember, and write down the few rules that apply every day.
Set a daily allowance and quiet hours
Choose an allowance that leaves time for sleep, school, physical activity and family life. Define quiet hours for lessons, meals and overnight use. Use the same terms in your family agreement and in the device schedules so there is no ambiguity about when access ends.
Require permission for new chatbot apps
Make approval a condition of installing a new chatbot or using a new AI website. When a child requests one, review its microphone, camera and contact permissions before allowing access. Recheck those permissions after an update or when a new feature appears.
Use shared spaces for younger children
For younger children, keep chatbot use in a shared family space where an adult is nearby. This is supervision, not a demand to read every message. It makes it easier to notice distress, excessive use or an attempt to bypass the agreed schedule.
Teach verification, not automatic trust
Explain that a fluent answer can still be wrong. For schoolwork, health questions, money decisions or anything that could affect safety, require the child to check the answer against a trusted source or ask an adult. Encourage them to say when they do not know whether an answer is reliable.
How can I supervise AI use without reading every conversation?
Use the least intrusive control that addresses the risk. Device schedules, app limits and feature blocks tell you when and where the tool is being used without collecting the text of every chat. Account linking can expose selected settings or safety controls, but it does not automatically grant conversation access.
Tell your child what is being monitored before you turn it on. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office advises that children should be informed when monitoring is used and that controls should respect their privacy rights. Explain which information you can see, why you need it and when you will review the settings.

- Describe the purpose of each limit, such as sleep, school concentration or safer feature use.
- Tell the child whether you receive settings changes or safety alerts, rather than implying that every message is visible.
- Agree on a process for reviewing a concerning interaction together.
- Give the child a way to ask for more time or a temporary feature change for a legitimate assignment.
What should I do if a child bypasses a limit?
Check the control layers in order instead of assuming the child deliberately defeated a single setting.

- Confirm the account: verify that the child is signed in to the supervised ChatGPT, Google or Microsoft account rather than an unsupervised account.
- Check every device: review the phone, tablet, Chromebook and computer where the child can access AI services.
- Check the route: look at both installed apps and browser access. On Apple devices, review website restrictions; in Family Link, review installed apps and browser-related controls.
- Check schedules: make sure the device clock, School Time, Downtime or Screen Time schedule matches the child’s actual time zone and routine.
- Check alternate services: apply the same rule to other chatbot apps or websites instead of blocking only the service the child first requested.
- Discuss the reason: ask what the child was trying to do and adjust the rule if the limit prevented legitimate schoolwork.
What is a practical setup sequence for a family?
Use this order when configuring a new phone, tablet or Chromebook.
- Write the family agreement: allowed times, quiet hours, permission for new apps, shared-space expectations and verification rules.
- Link the child’s chatbot account where the provider supports a parent connection.
- Set the operating-system daily limit and quiet schedule.
- Add per-app limits or blocks for each chatbot and for browsers that can reach chatbot websites.
- Review microphone, camera and contact permissions before the child starts using the service.
- Turn off or restrict higher-risk features, such as image generation, voice mode or group chat, when the platform provides those switches.
- Show the child the active settings and explain how to request an exception.
- Revisit the arrangement after a new device, a new chatbot app, a major feature change or a change in the school timetable.
What are the limits of AI parental controls?
Filters can miss inappropriate material, and an AI model can produce inaccurate or misleading answers even when no filter is triggered. Regulators and platform guidance therefore treat technical controls as one part of supervision rather than a substitute for an adult’s judgment.
Privacy is another limit. A parent may be able to manage settings, schedules or alerts without being entitled to read all conversation text. Make that distinction explicit so the child understands both the protection being provided and the privacy that remains.
Finally, controls differ by platform, account type and device. A setting shown for one child may not appear for another. After any major update, confirm that the intended schedule, app block and feature limits are still active.

Can I allow AI for homework while blocking entertainment features?
Yes, when the platform exposes separate controls. Use a scheduled allowance for the approved study window, then block or restrict optional features such as image generation, voice mode or group chat where available. For Gemini, the Family Link control is primarily an on-or-off access switch, so the time boundary must come from Family Link’s device schedules or app limits.
How often should I review my child’s AI settings?
Review them whenever the child gets a new device, installs a new chatbot, changes schools or schedules, or reports that a feature is behaving differently. A short check after an app update can catch a newly available microphone, camera or social feature before it becomes part of normal use.
Best Value
What personal information should a child avoid sharing with a chatbot?
Make “ask first” the rule for information that identifies or contacts someone, and review microphone, camera and contact permissions before use. Children should also know that a chatbot is not a private confidant for sensitive family, health or account details; they should bring those questions to a trusted adult.
What should my child do when an AI answer looks wrong or upsetting?
Stop using the answer as a decision, save enough context to explain what happened and tell an adult. For school or other important questions, check the claim against a trusted source before acting on it. This response plan matters even when all parental controls are working because filters cannot guarantee accurate or suitable output.
