You can automate cleanup of idle AWS resources, but the safest approach is to use AWS Compute Optimizer to identify candidates first, then apply tightly scoped rules only after review. Its recommendations cover multiple AWS resource types, but the documented recurring deletion rule in this guidance is for EBS volumes unattached for at least 32 days—not a blanket rule that deletes every resource flagged as idle.
Start with recommendations and an observe-only rollout. Exclude production, stateful, disaster-recovery, and seasonal workloads; restrict any action by account, environment, Region, and resource tags; and retain a recovery path for deletions. That separation between detection and action is what makes automated cleanup useful without treating low recent activity as proof that a resource is disposable.

What is the safest way to automatically clean up idle AWS resources?
Use AWS Compute Optimizer as a detection layer, not as permission to delete everything it flags. AWS describes Compute Optimizer as a service that analyzes resource configuration and utilization metrics to provide rightsizing recommendations and identify idle resources. Its recommendations are refreshed daily, but the evidence window and appropriate action vary by resource.
A safe workflow puts a human-reviewed policy between a recommendation and an action: identify candidates, check operational context, exclude risky workloads, apply a reversible or recoverable action where possible, and inspect results before expanding automation. An idle signal is a screening result; it does not establish that an application has no future need for the resource.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Enable Compute Optimizer for the accounts and Regions you intend to manage, then allow sufficient metric history to accumulate.
- Review recommendations by resource, evidence window, estimated savings, and performance risk rather than acting on a single idle label.
- Exclude workloads that must remain available, including production and stateful systems, disaster-recovery capacity, and resources with seasonal or quarterly demand.
- Limit the automation scope by account, environment, Region, and resource tags. Start in observe-only mode and use a small non-production cohort before any production rollout.
- Preserve recovery options before deletion where snapshots are supported, and route actions and failures to an auditable event stream.
- Review after each rollout wave: check unexpected matches, recommendations, and billing before expanding the rule to another cohort.
These controls matter because low utilization can be normal for a standby system, a workload between scheduled peaks, or a resource waiting for failover. Deployment inventories, backup policy, maintenance windows, failover design, and demand seasonality are important context that utilization metrics alone cannot supply.
Which AWS resources can Compute Optimizer identify as idle?
AWS lists idle recommendations across compute, storage, databases, networking, and other managed services. That breadth is useful for finding candidates, but it does not mean every listed resource has the same detection criteria or can be deleted through the same automation rule.
| Resource class | What the recommendation can help identify | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon EC2 instances and EC2 Auto Scaling groups | Idle compute capacity, with rightsizing context | Default EC2 idle screening uses a 14-day lookback and the CPU and network-I/O criteria described below. GPU instance types have additional GPU-specific criteria. |
| Amazon EBS volumes | Low-activity non-root volumes and volumes with no EC2 attachment | Activity-based idleness and unattached status are separate signals. The unattached check uses 32 days. |
| ECS services on Fargate | Idle service recommendations | The specific criterion and action are resource-dependent; no single threshold is established here. |
| Aurora and Amazon RDS databases | Idle database recommendations | Validate data retention, schedules, dependencies, and recovery needs before an action. |
| NAT Gateways and DynamoDB | Idle or underused resource recommendations | Check application dependencies and traffic patterns; the EC2 threshold does not apply to these resources. |
| ElastiCache, MemoryDB, and DocumentDB | Idle data-service recommendations | Check state, replicas, recovery requirements, and dependencies before changing or deleting resources. |
| WorkSpaces and SageMaker endpoints | Idle desktop and endpoint recommendations | Confirm user schedules and workload cycles rather than assuming continuous activity is expected. |
A recommendation is not itself an automation guarantee. Compute Optimizer’s supported automation actions depend on the resource and rule. In particular, the documented recurring cleanup rule here covers EBS volumes that have been unattached for at least 32 days; do not infer from the service’s broad recommendation list that it will automatically delete idle EC2 instances, databases, or every other candidate.
How does AWS decide that an EC2 instance or EBS volume is idle?
For default EC2 idle recommendations, AWS uses a 14-day lookback and identifies instances with peak CPU utilization below 5% and network I/O below 5 MB per day. GPU instance types have additional GPU-specific criteria, so the general CPU and network test is not the whole test for those instances.

EBS recommendations distinguish low activity from lack of attachment. A non-root volume is considered idle when it has fewer than one summed read/write operation per day over the lookback. Separately, a volume is considered unattached when it has had no EC2 attachment for 32 days. Changing the recommendation lookback does not remove or shorten that 32-day unattached test.
| Signal | Published criterion | What it does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| EC2 idle recommendation | Default 14-day lookback; peak CPU below 5%; network I/O below 5 MB/day | Indicates low observed activity under the default screening rule, not whether a machine is needed for an upcoming event, failover, or scheduled workload. |
| GPU EC2 instance | Additional GPU-specific criteria apply | The general EC2 thresholds alone are not sufficient to interpret the recommendation. |
| EBS activity-based idle signal | Non-root volume with fewer than one summed read/write operation per day over the lookback | Low I/O does not prove the data is unneeded or safely backed up. |
| EBS unattached signal | No EC2 attachment for 32 days | It is a distinct attachment test and remains 32 days even when the recommendation lookback changes. |
These are screening signals, not proof that deletion is safe. Before approving an action, check the owner and purpose of the resource, deployment inventory, backup policy, maintenance windows, failover design, and seasonal or quarterly demand. An idle database, volume, or standby instance can still protect a recovery objective even when it has little recent activity.

Yes. Compute Optimizer Automation supports recurring rules that snapshot and delete EBS volumes that have been unattached for at least 32 days. AWS also documents automation rules to upgrade EBS volume types. This is a specific capability, not evidence that all idle-resource recommendations can be automatically deleted.
The deletion path is recoverable through the snapshot created by the automation: data can be restored from that snapshot to a new volume. Recovery does not recreate the original volume identity. The new volume has a new volume ID, so an application or operator may need to reattach it and update any dependency on the former identifier.

Set a recovery policy before enabling deletion
- Decide how long snapshots must be retained to cover incident response and the organization’s recovery objectives.
- Confirm that the responsible team can locate the snapshot and restore data to a new volume.
- Check whether applications, scripts, or operational procedures rely on the original volume ID or attachment.
- Send automation actions and failures to an auditable event stream and review unexpected matches.
A snapshot is a recovery option, not a substitute for verifying that the data can be restored and reattached in the way the workload requires.
How should I scope an automated cleanup rule?
Make the eligible resource set explicit before scheduling actions. Compute Optimizer Automation supports targeting non-production environments with account and resource-tag filters; use those controls to begin with a cohort whose ownership and recovery requirements are understood.
Define who and what is eligible
- Account: Start with a designated account or cohort, rather than applying a rule across every account at once.
- Environment: Use explicit environment boundaries, beginning with non-production where appropriate.
- Region: Limit the rollout to the Regions intentionally in scope.
- Tags: Require resource tags that identify ownership and policy eligibility. Treat missing or ambiguous tags as a reason to review, not as implicit approval.
- Exclusions: Explicitly exclude production, stateful workloads, disaster-recovery capacity, and resources whose use is seasonal or quarterly.
These are policy controls, not a replacement for the recommendation’s evidence. For example, a correctly tagged non-production volume may still contain data that must be retained, and a low-activity production resource may be part of a deliberate standby design.
Roll out in stages
- Observe only: Inspect what would match without allowing the rule to take action. Investigate resources with unclear ownership or purpose.
- Test a small non-production cohort: Check recommendation matches, automation events, snapshots, and operational effects before widening the scope.
- Expand deliberately: Add further cohorts only after reviewing false positives and confirming that exclusions and recovery procedures work as intended.
- Review each wave: Recheck recommendations and billing after rollout. Pause expansion if unexpected resources match or the recovery process is unclear.
The point of a staged rollout is not to prove a threshold correct in every case; it is to learn whether the organization’s inventory, tags, exclusions, and recovery process are good enough to support unattended actions.

How do I validate savings without overstating them?
Use Compute Optimizer recommendations to identify candidates, then validate the effect in billing after each controlled rollout. A recommendation’s estimated savings is not a guarantee of realized savings, and estimates from different checks should not automatically be added together.
AWS Trusted Advisor provides cost-optimization checks and potential monthly savings estimates. AWS cautions that checks can overlap on the same resources, so summing every displayed estimate can overstate potential savings. Implement one recommendation set, refresh, and then inspect the remaining checks to see what is still applicable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If Compute Optimizer is opted into Trusted Advisor, findings may take up to 12 hours to generate and up to 48 hours to appear. Automatic checks refresh at least daily, so an immediate absence of a finding after opt-in is not evidence that the configuration failed.
For a rollout, keep the scope and timing of each change auditable, then compare the relevant post-change billing with the pre-change baseline. Separate savings attributed to removed resources from other changes in the same period, and avoid presenting a recommendation estimate as an achieved result.

How should I compare cleanup approaches?
Compare methods by what they detect, what evidence they use, what they can do, and how you constrain or reverse that action. Detection breadth alone does not make an approach safer or more effective.
| Decision axis | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Detection coverage | Which resource classes are supported: for example, EC2, EBS, databases, or managed services | A method that finds one type of idle resource will not provide complete cleanup coverage. |
| Evidence window | Whether the recommendation relies on 14 days, 32 days, or a resource-specific period | A short or mismatched window can miss scheduled, seasonal, quarterly, or failover use. |
| Action reversibility | Whether the action stops, resizes, snapshots and deletes, or irreversibly deletes a resource | The recovery burden and risk differ substantially by action. |
| Scoping controls | Whether you can target accounts, Regions, tags, and environments | Fine-grained scope helps keep an early rollout away from unreviewed workloads. |
| Savings estimate | Whether estimates account for discounts or use on-demand assumptions | Estimate basis affects how closely a projected figure may resemble billed savings. |
| Operational integration | Availability of APIs, event streams, approvals, and rollback | Operators need to see what matched, what changed, what failed, and how to recover. |
Compute Optimizer is the native starting point in the workflow described here because it supplies idle recommendations and supports defined automation capabilities. Use the comparison axes to assess any additional method against your environment rather than assuming that a larger set of automated actions is inherently better.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat commonly goes wrong with automatic cleanup?
Most avoidable failures come from treating a utilization signal as complete knowledge of a workload, or from deploying a rule more broadly than its exclusions and recovery path can support.
- A scheduled workload looks idle: Check its calendar and seasonal or quarterly pattern; keep it excluded until the full demand cycle is understood.
- A standby resource is mistaken for waste: Confirm its role in disaster recovery and failover design before taking action.
- A volume is low-activity but important: Verify data ownership and backup policy; low read/write activity does not establish that the data can be discarded.
- A recovery creates a different identity: Restoring an automated EBS deletion produces a new volume ID. Prepare for reattachment and update dependencies that use the old identifier.
- Trusted Advisor savings appear inflated: Checks can overlap on resources. Apply one recommendation set and refresh before interpreting remaining estimates.
- A new finding is not visible yet: After Compute Optimizer opt-in to Trusted Advisor, allow for the documented generation and display delays before diagnosing a missing result.
- A rule matches resources nobody owns: Keep ambiguous or untagged resources out of automatic action until an owner and intended use are established.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an idle recommendation mean AWS will automatically stop or delete the resource?
No. A recommendation identifies a candidate; available automation actions are resource- and rule-specific. The documented recurring deletion rule here is for EBS volumes unattached for at least 32 days, so verify the action supported for the particular resource before designing a cleanup policy.
Can I use a shorter lookback to catch unattached EBS volumes sooner?
No. The unattached-volume test is 32 days and is not shortened by changing the recommendation lookback. The activity-based EBS signal is separate from that attachment-age test.
What should I do if a cleanup rule deletes a volume that an application needs?
Use the snapshot created by the deletion automation to restore the data to a new volume, then arrange reattachment and update any dependency on the former volume ID. Whether that meets recovery needs depends on the application’s configuration and your restore procedures.

Why are Trusted Advisor findings missing just after I enable Compute Optimizer integration?
AWS says findings may take up to 12 hours to generate and up to 48 hours to appear after opt-in. Automatic checks refresh at least daily, so allow for that delay before treating the absence of a finding as a fault.
