To manage AI extensions and web apps across an organization, control both which software can be installed and which sites an approved extension can access. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox provide different enterprise controls and deployment channels; none should be treated as a universal AI-extension switch. Inventory requested tools, restrict permissions and access to sensitive sites, apply policies to the right groups, then pilot and review the rollout.

Why do AI extensions need more than an allowlist?

An allowlist answers an identity question: which extensions may run? It does not, by itself, answer what an approved extension can read or change. That distinction matters for AI tools because an extension’s host permissions can expose the contents of pages users visit, including internal applications and sensitive business data.

Microsoft Learn’s guidance for managing Edge extensions says, “Most organizations should manage extensions by their permissions and what websites they have access to.” In practice, use two layers: identity controls to approve, block, or deploy software, and permission or runtime-host controls to limit its reach. Apply those decisions through the browser’s enterprise-management channel, not by relying on users to make consistent choices.

Browser policy controls are also not interchangeable. Chrome’s enterprise controls cover extensions and web apps; Edge provides extension policies through Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM); Firefox uses enterprise policies and management tooling. The policy names, delivery method, and available AI-specific controls differ.

What should you inventory before changing policies?

Start with the tools employees request and the access each one needs. Do not classify an extension as safe merely because its publisher or business use is familiar: record its identity and requested permissions together.

  • Identity: record the extension name and ID, publisher, and update source so an approved item can be distinguished from similarly named software.
  • Permissions: note requested host permissions and device permissions. Host permissions describe access to websites; device permissions are a separate risk to assess.
  • Business context: identify the business owner and intended use, including whether the request is for a browser extension, a web app, or both.
  • Protected sites: compile the domains of payroll, source-code systems, customer records, health information, and other applications that extensions should not be able to read or change by default.
  • Policy lists: prepare a required-extension list, an allowlist, a blocklist, and a protected-domain list before rollout. Microsoft recommends establishing these lists as part of enterprise extension management.

Keep the inventory with the implementation record. Include the browser and management channel, and record the browser version used when the policy was configured. This helps administrators identify which environment a policy decision applies to when browser versions or policy catalogs change.

What do Chrome, Edge, and Firefox let administrators control?

All three browsers offer enterprise ways to manage extensions, but the controls and delivery surfaces are different. Use the browser-specific channel your organization manages; do not assume a policy name or configuration format transfers between browsers.

Browser Management surface Relevant controls AI-specific policy context
Chrome Google Admin console Force-install web apps and extensions; block by category or permission; restrict install sources; set runtime blocked or allowed hosts. General extension and web-app controls, rather than one universal AI-extension switch.
Edge Group Policy or MDM ExtensionSettings for permission and runtime-host decisions; ExtensionInstallAllowlist and ExtensionInstallBlocklist for identity exceptions; ExtensionInstallForcelist for silent, non-removable installation. The policy catalog includes generative-AI entries.
Firefox Policy files and enterprise management tooling ExtensionSettings for installation, locking, permissions, and website scope; related controls include InstallAddonsPermission and ExtensionUpdate. AIControls is available where applicable.

The table summarizes the controls identified for these enterprise channels; it does not imply that every option is available in every browser version, operating system, or management setup. Check the current vendor policy reference for the exact supported settings and delivery format before deployment. Chromium administrators’ documentation says its policies are “strictly intended to be used to configure instances of Chrome internal to your organization.”

How do you set Chrome policies for extensions and web apps?

Use the Google Admin console to target the group or organizational unit (OU) that should receive the policy. Chrome’s controls can govern extensions and web apps, but the specific settings you choose should reflect the inventory, approved permissions, and protected domains.

  1. In Google Admin console, go to Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions > User app settings.
  2. Select the relevant group or OU. Choose a scope deliberately: a policy aimed at a whole organization can affect users who have not been part of the pilot or exception decision.
  3. Configure the extension and app policies for that scope. Use identity, category, permission, and install-source controls to reflect the organization’s approved and blocked lists.
  4. Set runtime blocked or allowed hosts for extensions where applicable. Protect sensitive domains explicitly; do not treat approval to install an extension as approval for unrestricted access to internal sites.
  5. Save the settings, then verify the resulting behavior with a test account in the selected scope before expanding the policy.

Chrome supports force-installing extensions and web apps as well as blocking them. Those are different decisions: force installation makes an item administrator-controlled software, while a block prevents its use under the applicable policy. Choose only after checking the item’s permissions and testing it with the users and sites it is intended to serve.

How do you manage AI extensions in Microsoft Edge?

In Edge, combine extension identity policies with ExtensionSettings decisions about permissions and website access. Use the organization’s configured Group Policy or MDM channel to deliver the policies; the exact deployment steps and supported values depend on that channel and its current policy documentation.

Control extension identity

ExtensionInstallAllowlist and ExtensionInstallBlocklist provide identity-based exceptions. ExtensionInstallForcelist silently installs an extension and prevents users from removing it. Treat a force-listed extension as centrally managed software: approve its identity and permissions, test it, and choose its target group before deployment.

Constrain permissions and site access

Use ExtensionSettings for permission and runtime-host decisions. Edge’s runtime_blocked_hosts prevents extensions from reading or changing specified sites; runtime_allowed_hosts creates explicit exceptions. For example, an organization can block access to protected business domains while granting a narrowly defined exception where a tested extension has a documented need.

Microsoft’s guidance describes this as a way to enforce a baseline of allowed permissions while protecting sensitive corporate sites. Do not rely on a blocklist alone when the concern is an approved extension’s access to internal pages.

How do you manage AI extensions in Firefox?

Firefox enterprise policies provide controls for installation, locking, permissions, and website scope. Use ExtensionSettings for those decisions, and consider the related InstallAddonsPermission and ExtensionUpdate policies when designing the organization’s extension rules.

Firefox also exposes AIControls where applicable. Its presence does not make Firefox’s settings equivalent to Chrome or Edge policies: validate the relevant policy against the Firefox version and enterprise-management method in use. The information summarized here does not establish a single cross-browser configuration format or a universal set of AI settings.

As with other browsers, separate the questions “may this extension be installed?” and “which sites may it access?” Set website scope with the extension’s approved use in mind, then test the policy with the Firefox version and user group that will receive it.

How should you protect sensitive internal sites?

Make protected-site access an explicit policy decision. Identify domains that contain payroll, source code, customer information, health information, or other sensitive material, then use the browser’s runtime-host controls where available to prevent extensions from reading or changing those sites.

  1. List the protected domains with the applications or data they contain and the team responsible for them.
  2. Decide which extensions, if any, need access to each protected domain for a defined business purpose.
  3. Set blocked hosts as the default for sensitive sites and create allowed-host exceptions only when justified. In Edge, these decisions use runtime_blocked_hosts and runtime_allowed_hosts.
  4. Test both sides of the rule: confirm that an extension cannot reach a protected site without an exception and that an approved exception permits only the intended access.
  5. Record the owner and reason for each exception so it can be reviewed rather than becoming an unexamined permanent grant.

Host controls address what extensions can access within the browser. They should be paired with identity and permission review, because a blocked domain does not resolve unrelated risks such as unnecessary device permissions or an unapproved extension being installed.

When should you force-install an AI extension or web app?

Force installation is appropriate only when administrators have decided that an item should be deployed and controlled centrally. Edge’s ExtensionInstallForcelist installs silently and makes an extension non-removable; Chrome also supports force-installing extensions and web apps. That convenience comes with responsibility: users may not be able to remove the software, so administrators should test it before broad deployment.

  • Confirm the exact extension identity, publisher, update source, and requested permissions.
  • Define which users need it and what business task it supports.
  • Check its access to protected sites and set host restrictions or explicit exceptions.
  • Test the installation and relevant workflows in a lab or small pilot before expanding the target group.
  • Provide a way for pilot users to report problems and assign an owner to review those reports.

Force installation is not the same as broadly allowing every extension from a publisher or category. Keep the deployment scoped to the approved item and audience, and make later changes through a reviewable policy process.

How do you roll out policies without surprising users?

Use a staged rollout rather than applying new restrictions everywhere at once. Microsoft’s recommended sequence is to inventory extensions, review permissions, identify sensitive sites, test in a lab or small pilot, roll out in phases, collect feedback, and review the policy repeatedly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory: complete the requested-tool and protected-domain lists, including business owners.
  2. Review: decide which identities, permissions, and site access are needed; use the least access consistent with the stated business use.
  3. Test: validate the policy in a lab or small pilot group. Include both routine tasks and attempts to reach protected sites.
  4. Phase: expand to additional groups or OUs in deliberate stages rather than treating one successful pilot as proof for every user and workflow.
  5. Collect feedback: identify legitimate use cases that were blocked, unexpected access that remained possible, and installation or compatibility problems.
  6. Review: revisit the policy as browser versions, extension permissions, and AI features change.

Keep exceptions attached to a specific group or OU where feasible, with a named owner and a reason. This makes departures from the baseline deliberate and reviewable instead of silently broadening access for everyone.

What should you check when a policy does not behave as expected?

First establish which browser, version, management channel, and user scope are involved. A policy configured in the wrong deployment surface or applied to the wrong group can look like a policy failure even when the setting itself is valid.

  • The setting has no visible effect: confirm the user belongs to the intended group or OU, the policy was saved, and the browser is managed through the channel where you configured it.
  • An extension is installed but can still reach a sensitive site: check the runtime-host rule separately from the identity allowlist. Approval to install and permission to access a site are different controls.
  • A forced extension causes problems: keep the rollout limited to the pilot scope while you investigate; force-installed extensions are non-removable by users in Edge, so remediation needs an administrator policy change.
  • A documented policy name is unavailable or differs: recheck the current vendor policy reference for the browser version and management channel in use. Names and AI-related controls are version-sensitive.
  • A legitimate workflow is blocked: verify whether it needs a specific host exception, then grant one only after the business owner and protected-site owner agree on the scope.

Do not “fix” a failed restriction by removing the broader permission boundary without first identifying which policy layer is responsible. Keep the intended baseline intact and adjust the narrowest relevant rule.

How often should browser policies be reviewed?

Review them whenever a relevant browser version, extension permission set, or AI feature changes, and as part of recurring governance. The available guidance calls for recurring review but does not prescribe a universal interval, so set a cadence that fits the organization’s change and risk processes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At each review, compare the current extension inventory with the approved list, reassess requested permissions and host access, revisit protected-domain exceptions, and confirm that forced deployments still have an owner and valid business purpose. Record changes alongside the affected browser version and deployment channel so later administrators can understand why a control exists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an AI extension policy also block access to the AI service’s website?

Do not assume it does. Extension and web-app controls govern those browser items; they are not a general rule for blocking a website reached through ordinary browsing. If the goal is to restrict access to a site itself, verify that a separate web-access control is in place.

Can I use the same policy configuration in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox?

No single configuration format is established across these browsers. Chrome uses the Google Admin console, Edge uses Group Policy or MDM, and Firefox uses enterprise policy files and management tooling; translate the organization’s intent into each browser’s supported settings.

What should I check after an AI extension changes its permissions?

Reassess its requested host and device permissions against the original business need, then retest access to protected domains. A change in permissions or AI features is a reason to revisit the approval, not an automatic reason to retain or revoke it.
