AI does not automatically reduce a job’s total workload. It may speed up a draft while adding prompting, fact-checking, correction, documentation, exception handling and accountability. Set a boundary by agreeing with your manager, task by task, on what AI will do, what “done” means, what a person must review, which existing work will be reduced or delayed, and when the arrangement will be reassessed.
The most useful conversation is specific: “I can use AI for this task, but the review and correction still take time. Which other work should move down the list if the expected volume goes up?” Put the answer in writing, use only approved tools, protect sensitive information and track whether work is spilling into hours you did not agree to.

Why can AI make a job feel heavier instead of lighter?
AI can remove a step and create several others. A generated summary still needs someone to check whether it omitted a qualification. An automated classification still produces edge cases. A faster first draft can lead to more requests because colleagues assume every subsequent task can be completed at the same speed.
Australian work-health guidance lists high job demands, low job control, poor support and unclear roles as possible risks when digital technologies change work. Those risks matter when AI changes pace, allocation, monitoring or the amount of judgment a worker must exercise. A quicker output is not proof that unlimited additional work fits within the same role or hours.

A 2026 American Management Association article reports that 41% of surveyed managers said AI had increased their expectations for the volume of work employees should complete within a given amount of time. The article does not provide the survey’s sample size or field dates, so treat the figure as a finding from that manager survey, not a universal rate.
CIPD partner Kate Dodsworth describes the practical danger this way: “while the benefits of AI are widely publicised, the legal and practical consequences of AI in the employment context are only just beginning to emerge. The result can be longer working days and wider role scope. While this may look like higher discretionary effort, it is often unsustainable. Over time, intensity can reduce focus, increase errors and weaken decision quality — undermining the productivity gains AI is meant to deliver.” CIPD published the comment on 21 May 2026.

Make the before-and-after workload visible. A short inventory separates the task an AI tool performs from the human work that remains and prevents a vague argument about whether you “feel” busier.
1. List the original outputs
Write down the recurring outputs, their normal volume, deadlines, quality requirements and the decisions you personally own. Include meetings, handoffs, customer communication, record-keeping and compliance steps that may not appear in a production metric.
2. Record the new AI-assisted step
For each output, note whether AI drafts, summarizes, classifies, transcribes or automates part of it. Record the tool approved for that use and the information it receives. Do not paste confidential or personal data into a tool until your organization has confirmed that use is allowed.
3. Separate new work from old work
Create a second list for prompting, selecting source material, checking accuracy, correcting tone or bias, documenting the process, handling exceptions and answering questions about an AI-generated result. Estimate the time these activities take over several representative tasks instead of relying on one unusually easy example.
4. Mark the risk level
Identify outputs where an error could affect safety, money, legal compliance, privacy, employment decisions or a customer’s rights. High-consequence work generally requires more human review and a named person accountable for the decision.

5. Track capacity, not just output
For two or three weeks, record incoming volume, time spent reviewing, rework, interruptions and work performed outside agreed hours. The log is not a demand for a universal “AI allowance”; it is evidence for deciding what your particular role can sustain.
What should I ask my manager before AI becomes an informal quota?
Ask for a task-level agreement. The National AI Centre’s policy guidance recommends clear expectations, responsibilities, oversight and policy review; those principles translate into five concrete questions.
- Which tasks should use AI? Name the approved use cases and the ones that remain human-only.
- What does “done” mean? Define the quality bar, required sources, format, turnaround time and who accepts the result.
- What must a person check? Agree on checks for factual accuracy, calculations, privacy, security, bias, tone and any decision that affects another person.
- What work changes if volume rises? Ask which tasks will be removed, delayed, shortened or reassigned. Do not accept “AI makes it faster” as an answer to a capacity question.
- When will we review the arrangement? Set a date and measures: outcome quality, checking time, error corrections, pace, interruptions and work outside agreed hours.
Send a brief written recap after the meeting: the task, approved tool, expected volume, review steps, owner, excluded work and review date. Ask your manager to correct anything inaccurate. This creates a shared reference when priorities change.
A practical wording is: “I can use AI for this task, but the review and correction still take time. If the expected volume increases, which current priority should move down, and what level of checking is required?” Present it as a capacity trade-off, not a refusal to use the tool.
How do I set safe boundaries for tools, data and human oversight?
A workload agreement is incomplete if it says nothing about information handling or accountability. The Australian Government’s National AI Centre recommends documenting the following elements in an AI policy.
| Boundary | What the team should document |
|---|---|
| Approved tools | Which services, accounts and features may be used for each task, including any restrictions on personal accounts. |
| Permitted data | What information may be entered, what must be anonymized or excluded, retention expectations and who can authorize an exception. |
| Human oversight | When a person must review an output, who owns the final decision and how approval is recorded. |
| Issue reporting | Where to report inaccurate, unsafe, biased, insecure or unexpected results, and who responds. |
| Review cadence | When the policy and each use case will be reassessed as tools, risks or workload change. |
Keep the boundary usable at the point of work. A one-page checklist, an approved-tool register and a clear reporting route are more helpful than a policy employees cannot find. The National AI Centre’s guidance on unapproved use says staff need practical guidance, training and a safe way to disclose experimentation or mistakes. Treat hidden use as a signal to investigate unmet needs, time pressure or curiosity, not as proof of bad faith.
Never let an AI system silently become the decision-maker. If an output influences hiring, discipline, access to services, safety, financial decisions or a person’s rights, identify the human who reviews the relevant evidence and can reject the recommendation.

How should managers and HR prevent AI from turning into permanent acceleration?
Set norms by task and risk instead of assuming that every AI-assisted activity creates equal spare capacity.
Define sustainable use
State when a tool is encouraged, optional or prohibited. Specify how much checking is reasonable for low-, medium- and high-risk work, while allowing the responsible person to pause and seek help when an output is unusual.
Protect human judgment
Reserve time for coaching, relationship work, difficult decisions and learning. If calendars are filled with new production targets, there may be no time left to exercise the judgment that makes AI-assisted work reliable.
Consult workers before changing pace or monitoring
Safe Work Australia recommends identifying hazards, assessing risks, selecting controls and monitoring those controls in consultation with workers. Apply that process when AI changes allocation, performance measurement, break patterns, supervision or expected response times. Local work-health law may prescribe different processes outside Australia.
Make problems discussable
Invite employees to report hallucinations, repeated corrections, unsafe suggestions and workload spillover without having to hide that they experimented. The National AI Centre provides a team activity for open discussion and recurring check-ins: Supporting safe and open AI use.
Measure outcomes and strain together
Review quality, customer impact, rework, decision delays, out-of-hours activity, decision fatigue and time spent validating outputs. CIPD identifies rising out-of-hours work, decision fatigue and growing validation time as warning signs to investigate; they are not a diagnostic test or a fixed threshold.

- Output targets rise while no task, deadline or service level is removed.
- Review and correction time is omitted from schedules or performance measures.
- Employees routinely work before or after agreed hours to meet AI-driven volume expectations.
- People skip required checks because the pace makes them impractical.
- Errors, complaints, rework or near misses increase after automation.
- Workers cannot tell which tool is approved, what data is allowed or who owns a decision.
- Employees conceal use because reporting an experiment or failure feels unsafe.
- Breaks, coaching, handoffs or relationship work are squeezed out by production metrics.
Bring examples, dates and the effect on quality or safety. A factual record is more actionable than a general statement that AI is “too much.”

How often should we review AI-related workload?
Choose a review point before the tool becomes routine, then revisit it whenever the model, task, volume, staffing or risk changes. A review can be short if the use case is stable, but it should answer the same questions each time.
- Outcome: Did the AI-assisted work meet the agreed quality and service goal?
- Human effort: How much time went into prompting, checking, correction, documentation and exceptions?
- Capacity: Which old tasks actually decreased, and which new tasks appeared?
- Risk: Were there privacy, security, fairness, safety or compliance issues?
- Working time: Did pace, interruptions or out-of-hours work increase?
- Decision: Keep, adjust, pause or stop the use case, and record who approved that decision.
Document the review outcome and the next date. If the tool is experimental, use a limited pilot with a named owner and a stop condition rather than allowing an indefinite informal trial.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can I do if AI expectations push work into evenings or weekends?
First, identify the specific expectation: extra volume, shorter response times, mandatory availability or unpaid checking. Ask which priority should be displaced and state the hours you can work under your agreement. If the answer is that everything remains due, ask for a written priority order and raise the capacity risk through your manager, HR, worker representative or occupational-safety channel.
Rights to disconnect depend on your jurisdiction, contract and workplace rules. Ireland’s Code of Practice on the Right to Disconnect, published 1 April 2021 and last updated 15 February 2024, gives guidance to employers, employees and representatives, including people who routinely work longer than agreed hours. It is an Irish code of practice, not a worldwide legal right; readers elsewhere should check their local law and applicable agreements.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not disable safety or compliance checks to leave on time. Instead, report that the assigned volume cannot be completed within the agreed hours without omitting required controls, and ask for a documented decision about scope, staffing or deadlines.
Which boundary approach fits the task?
There is no universal AI quota or standard checking-time allowance. Choose the approach that matches the task’s risk, data sensitivity, pace control and working-time obligations.
Best Value
| Approach | Best fit | Boundary to agree | Main failure to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human-first assistance | High-consequence decisions or sensitive information | AI may prepare options; a named person verifies evidence and owns the decision. | Review becomes rushed because production volume rises. |
| Structured co-production | Repeatable drafting, summarizing or classification with a clear quality rubric | Approved tool, input limits, sampling or full checks, correction path and target volume. | Prompting and validation time is invisible in schedules. |
| Low-risk automation | Routine internal work where errors are easy to detect and reverse | Permitted data, exception handling, monitoring and a way to stop the automation. | Small errors accumulate or affect downstream work unnoticed. |
| Time-boxed pilot | New or uncertain use cases | Owner, duration, success measures, worker feedback and a stop or scale decision. | An experiment becomes a permanent target without a review. |
How do I escalate a persistent overload or unsafe use?
Use the channel that matches the problem and follow your local policy.
- Re-state the agreed boundary: Include the task, volume, review requirement and hours affected.
- Show the impact: Attach examples of rework, missed controls, errors, customer impact or out-of-hours work.
- Request a decision: Ask for work to be removed, delayed, reassigned, resourced or stopped.
- Escalate appropriately: Contact HR, a worker representative, health-and-safety lead, privacy officer or compliance channel when the manager cannot resolve it.
- Record the response: Keep the final instruction, owner and review date so expectations are not recreated informally.
Urgent safety, privacy or security risks should be reported immediately through the designated incident route rather than waiting for a routine workload meeting.

Use this checklist for a team or individual agreement:
- Purpose and task covered.
- Approved tool, account and model or feature, where relevant.
- Data that may be entered and data that is prohibited.
- Expected volume, deadline and definition of “done.”
- Required human checks and the person accountable for the final result.
- Work that will be reduced, delayed or reassigned if volume increases.
- How errors, unsafe outputs and suspected policy breaches are reported.
- How training and support will be provided.
- Review date, measures and the person who can pause the use case.
- Working-time, availability and escalation arrangements under local rules.
Keep the document short enough to use and specific enough to settle disagreements. Update it when the tool or work changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my employer require me to use an AI tool I have not been trained on?
Ask for the approved-use policy, training, data rules and the human-review requirement before using it on live work. If the tool affects safety, privacy or another person’s rights, request a named owner and an escalation route; do not improvise with confidential information.
How can I prove that checking AI output is part of my workload?
Keep a small sample showing the original output, the checks performed, corrections made and time spent. Pair those examples with the volume and deadline so your manager can see the review work that a simple output count misses.

Ask which existing tasks, deadlines or service levels will change and what checking standard still applies. Request the priority order in writing and explain the quality or safety consequence if the added volume cannot fit within agreed hours.
Is there a legal right to disconnect from AI-related messages after work?
It depends on local law, employment terms and workplace policy. Ireland has a Code of Practice on the Right to Disconnect, but that guidance should not be treated as a universal rule; check the requirements where you work.
