Facebook Stories make it easy to share quick updates, photos, and videos, but many users also want to know exactly who saw them. Facebook does provide a viewer list for active stories, though what you can see depends on your privacy settings, the viewer’s relationship to you, and whether the story is still available.
Checking story viewers is usually simple on the Facebook app or desktop site, but expired stories, custom audiences, public visibility, and app glitches can make the results confusing. Understanding how viewer lists work helps you know what Facebook shows, what it hides, and how to adjust your story settings for more control.

How Facebook Story Views Work
Facebook Stories are short-lived posts that appear at the top of Facebook and Messenger for up to 24 hours. When someone opens your story, Facebook may add that person to your viewer list, letting you see which accounts watched it while the story is active. The viewer list is private to you; other people cannot open your story and see who else viewed it.

Story views are tied to your audience setting. If you share a story with Friends, you will generally see the names of friends who viewed it. If you share it with a custom audience, only people included in that audience can view it, and eligible viewers may appear in the list after watching. If your story is set to Public, friends and followers can view it, but Facebook may not always show every non-friend as a named viewer.

What the viewer list usually shows
- Named viewers: People Facebook can identify to you, typically friends or accounts within your selected audience.
- View count: The total number of views or viewers Facebook has recorded for that story.
- Reactions and replies: Responses such as emoji reactions or direct replies, which may also appear in Messenger or notifications.
- Audience indicators: Labels or icons showing whether the story was shared publicly, with friends, or with a custom list.
A view is counted when someone actually opens the story, not simply when your profile or feed appears on their screen. Facebook does not show how long a person watched, whether they replayed it, or whether they took a screenshot. In most cases, repeat views from the same person do not appear as separate named entries, so the list is best understood as a record of accounts that watched rather than a detailed analytics report.
The viewer list can update with a slight delay, especially if the viewer has a weak connection, is using an older app version, or watched from a different Facebook surface such as Messenger. You may also see differences between the number of views and the number of visible names. This can happen with public stories, privacy restrictions, blocked or deactivated accounts, or people who viewed before changing their relationship to your account, such as unfriending or blocking you afterward.
After a story expires, it disappears from the main Stories tray, and normal viewer access becomes more limited. If your story archive is turned on, you may be able to reopen the expired story later, but the viewer information available after expiration can differ from what you saw during the 24-hour window. For the most complete viewer list, it is best to check while the story is still live.
How to See Who Viewed Your Facebook Story on Mobile
On the Facebook mobile app, the viewer list is available directly from your active Story. You can check it on iPhone, iPad, or Android as long as the Story is still live and has received at least one view. Facebook Stories usually remain visible for 24 hours, and the viewer list updates as more people watch.
- Open the Facebook app on your phone or tablet.
- Tap Your Story at the top of the Feed. You can also tap your profile picture if your Story ring appears there.
- When your Story opens, look near the bottom-left corner for the view count or small profile icons.
- Tap the view count, such as “12 viewers”, to open the full viewer list.
- Scroll through the list to see the names of people who have viewed that Story photo or video.
If your Story has mulle slides, each photo or video can have its own viewer list. Swipe through each part of your Story, then tap the viewer count on each one to see who watched that specific slide. Someone may appear on one slide but not another if they skipped ahead, stopped watching, or only viewed part of your Story.
The viewer panel may also show reactions, replies, or quick emoji responses next to certain names. If someone sent a message from your Story, that reply usually appears in Messenger as well. For Facebook Stories shared to both Facebook and Messenger, viewers from both places may be included depending on your settings and app version.

If you do not see a viewer list
- No one has viewed it yet: If the Story is brand new, the viewer area may be blank until the first view is recorded.
- The Story expired: After 24 hours, it moves out of the active Story area unless saved to your archive.
- You are viewing the wrong slide: A different Story slide may have the views you are looking for.
- The app has not refreshed: Close and reopen Facebook, or pull down to refresh the Feed.
- Your app is outdated: Update Facebook from the App Store or Google Play Store if the viewer interface looks different or does not load.
For the most accurate results, check your viewer list while the Story is still active. Facebook can show you who watched your Story only within the limits of your audience settings, app behavior, and privacy controls. If someone is not eligible to view the Story, they should not appear in the list; if Facebook cannot identify a viewer in the normal way, you may see a general count instead of a name in some cases.

You can also check your Facebook Story viewers from a desktop browser, though the layout is a little different from the mobile app. The viewer list is available while your story is still active, which usually means within 24 hours of posting. If the story has already expired, you may need to look in your story archive or insights instead, depending on your account type and settings.
- Open facebook.com in a desktop browser and sign in to your account.
- From the Facebook home page, look near the top of the feed for the Stories row.
- Click Your Story to open the story you posted.
- While the story is open, look for the viewer count or eye icon, usually near the lower-left area of the story viewer.
- Click the viewer count to open the list of people who have viewed that story.
The viewer list shows the names of Facebook accounts that Facebook is able to identify as viewers. If you posted mulle story slides, such as a photo followed by a video, each slide can have its own viewer list. Click through each part of your story and check the viewer count separately if you want to see who watched a specific photo or clip. Someone may appear on one slide but not another if they skipped ahead, exited early, or only viewed part of the story.
What you may see on desktop
- Named viewers: Friends, followers, or other visible accounts who viewed your story and can be shown in the list.
- A viewer count: The total number of views Facebook is showing for that story item.
- Different counts per slide: Each story segment may have a separate number of viewers.
- No viewers yet: If nobody has opened the story, the viewer list may be empty.
If you do not see the viewer list on desktop, first confirm that you are viewing your own story, not someone else’s. Refresh the page, close and reopen the story, or try another browser if the panel does not load. Browser extensions that block scripts, tracking, pop-ups, or social media elements can also interfere with Facebook’s interface, so temporarily disabling them may help. How to View Story Insights After a Story Expires
Facebook Stories disappear from the active story tray after 24 hours, but that does not always mean the information is gone. If your Story Archive is turned on, Facebook saves expired stories privately so you can reopen them later. From there, you may be able to see basic story details such as the expired story itself, reactions, replies, and in some cases the viewer list that was available while the story was live.
On the Facebook mobile app, open your profile, tap the three-dot menu near your profile controls, then choose Archive. Select Story Archive and tap the expired story you want to review. If viewer information is still available for that story, you should see a viewer count or a viewer section, usually near the bottom of the screen. Tap it to open the list of people Facebook recorded as viewers.

How to check expired Story data
- Open the Facebook app and go to your profile.
- Tap the three dots beside your profile options.
- Select Archive, then choose Story Archive.
- Open the expired story you want to inspect.
- Look for the viewer count, reactions, replies, or other engagement details.
If you posted the story from a Facebook Page, or from a profile with professional mode enabled, you may see broader performance metrics instead of, or in addition to, individual viewer names. These can include reach, impressions, taps forward, taps backward, exits, replies, and reactions. The exact options depend on your account type, the Facebook app version, and whether Meta has made insights available for that story format in your region.
| Story type | What you may see after expiration |
|---|---|
| Personal profile story | Archived story, reactions, replies, and sometimes the viewer list |
| Facebook Page story | Engagement metrics such as reach, impressions, taps, replies, and reactions |
| Professional mode story | Creator-style insights, depending on availability and account settings |
Story Archive must be enabled before the story expires for Facebook to save it automatically. To check this, go to your Story Archive, open the archive settings, and make sure saving to archive is turned on. If the setting was off when you posted the story, you usually cannot recover that expired story or its viewer details later. Also, if a viewer deleted or deactivated their account, blocked you, or changed privacy-related account status, their name may no longer appear even if they watched the story while it was active.
Why You Can’t See Some Facebook Story Viewers
Facebook Story viewer lists are not always a perfect record of every person who may have seen your content. In most cases, Facebook shows the names of people who viewed your story when they are eligible to appear based on your privacy settings, their account status, and the way they accessed the story. If the viewer list looks shorter than expected, it usually does not mean Facebook is hiding a special “anonymous viewers” list you can unlock. It means the platform either did not record a view in a way that can be shown to you, or the viewer is outside the group of people Facebook identifies by name.

Common reasons viewers may not appear
- Your story audience includes Public viewers: If your story is set to Public, people outside your friends list may be able to view it. Facebook may show a count or group some viewers differently instead of listing every non-friend by name, depending on the story type, account, region, and current app experience.
- The person viewed from Messenger or another Facebook surface: Stories can appear in different places across Facebook and Messenger. Viewer reporting usually syncs, but delays or interface differences can make the list look incomplete for a while.
- The viewer blocked you or deactivated their account: If someone views your story and later blocks you, deletes Facebook, or deactivates their profile, their name may disappear or become unavailable in the viewer list.
- You blocked the viewer after they watched: Blocking can affect what you can see about that person afterward. Their previous interaction may no longer be displayed normally.
- The view did not fully register: If someone swiped past quickly, lost connection, closed the app, or viewed during a temporary Facebook issue, the story may have appeared on their screen without creating a visible viewer entry.
- They watched a repost, screenshot, or shared version elsewhere: If another person shows your story to someone on their phone, records it, screenshots it, or describes it in a chat, Facebook has no way to add that outside viewer to your story list.
Audience settings also affect what you can see. A story shared to Friends is usually easier to interpret because the named viewers should generally be people on your friends list. A story shared to Public can reach people beyond your direct connections, but your visibility into those viewers may be more limited. If you use Custom settings or hide your story from specific people, only the allowed audience can view it through normal Facebook story placement. However, privacy settings do not prevent someone who can see the story from showing it to another person off-platform.
There are also limits around third-party claims. Apps, browser extensions, and websites that promise to reveal hidden Facebook Story viewers, anonymous viewers, profile visitors, or people who secretly watched your story should be treated with caution. Facebook does not provide a public tool that exposes a private list beyond what appears in the official viewer panel and available insights. Giving your login details to a third-party service can put your account, messages, pages, and payment information at risk.
If your viewer list seems wrong, try refreshing the story, closing and reopening the Facebook app, checking from another device, or waiting a few minutes for the list to update. Make sure the app is current, your internet connection is stable, and you are checking the correct story, especially if you posted mulle stories close together. If the story has expired, look in your Story Archive or available insights, but expect less detail than you may have seen while the story was live.

How to Control Who Can View Your Facebook Story
Facebook lets you choose the audience for your Story before you post it, and in many cases you can also adjust Story privacy from your settings for future posts. These controls affect who is allowed to view the Story, which also affects who can appear in your viewer list. If you want a cleaner viewer list or you only want certain people to see personal updates, setting the right audience before publishing is the best approach.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChange the audience before posting a Story
When you create a new Facebook Story, look for the privacy or audience selector before you tap Share. On mobile, this is usually shown as an audience label such as Public, Friends, or Custom. Tap it to choose who can see the Story. The exact wording can vary slightly by app version, but the main choices are typically similar.
- Public: Anyone on or off Facebook may be able to see the Story, depending on how it is surfaced and your profile settings.
- Friends: Only your Facebook friends can view it.
- Custom: You choose specific people who can see the Story.
- Hide Story From: You can exclude selected people while still sharing with a wider audience, such as your friends list.
If you share Stories frequently, it is worth checking this setting each time you post. Facebook may remember your last Story audience, so a Story you intend for close friends could accidentally be posted to a broader audience if you do not review the selector. This is especially useful when switching between casual updates, family posts, event photos, or business-related Stories.
Update Story privacy in Facebook settings
You can also manage Story privacy from Facebook’s settings. In the Facebook app, open the Menu, go to Settings & privacy, then Settings, and look for Story-related privacy options. Depending on your region and app version, these may appear under areas such as Audience and visibility, Stories, or Story privacy. From there, you can set a default audience or choose people to hide your Stories from.
Using Hide Story From is helpful when you do not want to unfriend or block someone but also do not want them seeing your temporary updates. For example, you might hide Stories from coworkers, certain relatives, or acquaintances while still sharing with the rest of your friends. The person you hide the Story from is not notified by Facebook.

How audience settings affect viewer lists
Your privacy choice limits who can open the Story, but it does not guarantee that every viewer will be identifiable in the same way. Friends who view your Story normally appear by name. If the Story is public, some views may be grouped or shown with limited detail, especially from people you are not connected with. If you restrict a Story to friends or a custom list, the viewer list is usually easier to interpret because the audience is narrower.

For the most control, use Friends or Custom rather than Public, review the audience before posting, and update your hidden list when your privacy needs change. If someone should not be able to see any of your Facebook activity, not just Stories, you may need stronger controls such as unfriending, restricting, or blocking them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see who viewed my Facebook Story after 24 hours?
Yes, but only if the story is still available in your Story Archive or insights area. Open your archived story and look for the viewer or insights option; Facebook may show view counts and available viewer details depending on your account type and privacy settings.
Can someone view my Facebook Story without showing up on the viewer list?
In some cases, yes. If someone viewed through certain previews, privacy-limited contexts, or after you changed audience settings, their name may not appear clearly. Facebook also may show limited information for viewers who are not your friends or who interacted from restricted visibility areas.
How do I check Facebook Story viewers on my phone?
Open the Facebook app, tap your active story at the top of the feed, then swipe up or tap the viewer count in the lower corner. You should see a list of people who viewed it, along with reactions or replies if they interacted with the story.
Can I see story viewers from Facebook on a computer?
Yes. Go to Facebook in a browser, open your active story from the Stories section, and click the viewer count or eye icon if it appears. The desktop view may show fewer controls than the mobile app, so checking from the app is often easier.
How can I stop certain people from viewing my Facebook Story?
Before posting, choose your story audience, such as Public, Friends, Custom, or Hide Story From. You can also open Facebook story privacy settings and add specific people to the hidden list so future stories are not shown to them.
Bottom Line
Facebook makes it easy to see who viewed your Story while it’s still active: open the Story, tap or click the viewer count, and review the list based on your audience settings. Once a Story expires, your access to viewer details may be limited unless it’s saved to your archive, and even then Facebook’s available data can vary.
