To screenshot Telegram, open the chat or media you want to capture and use your device’s normal screenshot shortcut. On most Android phones, press Power + Volume Down; on an iPhone with Face ID, press Side + Volume Up; on older iPhones, use the appropriate Home-button combination; and on a Mac, press Shift-Command-3 for the full screen or Shift-Command-4 for a selected area. Edit the preview immediately or find the saved image in your phone’s Photos/Gallery app or on the Mac desktop.
Telegram does not provide one universal screenshot button, and some chats deliberately restrict capture. Protected group or channel content can block screenshots, while Secret Chat alerts are only an attempted, platform-dependent warning—not a guarantee that the other person will know. The steps below cover each supported device and explain the privacy limits before you share an image.

How do I screenshot Telegram on Android?
Display the Telegram conversation or content, then press Power and Volume Down together. Android normally shows a thumbnail or toolbar that lets you crop, annotate, or share the capture.
- Open Telegram and navigate to the exact message, photo, video frame, profile, or settings screen you need.
- Press Power + Volume Down at the same time, then release. Holding the buttons too long may open the power menu or change the volume instead.
- If your phone supports it, open the power menu, tap Screenshot, and wait for the preview.
- Tap the preview to crop, draw on, or share the image. Save the edited version before dismissing the preview if your phone asks whether to keep changes.
- To retrieve it later, open Google Photos and choose Collections → On this device → Screenshots. Older phones may place captures in the Gallery app’s Screenshots folder.
Why the Android shortcut may look different
Button placement and power-menu labels vary by manufacturer, Android release, and accessibility settings. A phone with a damaged physical button, a case that obstructs it, or a customized gesture may offer an on-screen screenshot command instead. Use the method your phone exposes rather than repeatedly pressing the buttons, which can trigger a restart, lock, or volume change.

Google’s general Android screenshot instructions also vary by manufacturer, so the combination above is the common starting point rather than a guarantee for every model. If your device has a different layout or on-screen command, use that device’s own screenshot control. The shortcut comes from Android and the phone maker, not from a Telegram-specific capture button.
What if Android says screenshots are blocked?
A blocked capture usually means the content, Telegram client, or operating system has marked that screen as protected. The exact behavior can differ by phone model, Android version, Telegram version, and chat type. Try capturing an ordinary cloud-chat screen to determine whether the restriction is limited to one conversation or applies to the whole app; do not treat a successful test on one screen as proof that every Telegram screen can be captured.
Telegram’s content-protection feature can be enabled for private messages by users and bots, and group or channel owners can enable it for members-only content. It is designed to restrict screenshots and copying, disable forwarding, and limit media saving. If capture is refused only for a particular conversation or channel, that may be the intended privacy control. A successful capture elsewhere does not establish that you have permission to capture or redistribute the protected material.
How do I screenshot a Telegram chat on iPhone?
Use the button combination that matches your iPhone’s design. Face ID models use Side + Volume Up; models with a Home button use Home + Side or Home + Top, depending on the hardware.
- Open Telegram and leave the conversation positioned at the material you want in the image.
- On a Face ID iPhone, quickly press and release Side + Volume Up together.
- On an iPhone with a Home button, quickly press and release Home + Side or Home + Top.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner to crop, mark up, or share. Swipe the thumbnail away if you only want to save the unedited capture.
- Open the Photos app and select the Screenshots collection to find it later.
If the screen locks, Siri opens, or the volume changes, the buttons were probably held or pressed in the wrong order. Try a quick, simultaneous press rather than a long hold.
The model distinction matters: there is no single button combination for every iPhone. If the phone has Face ID, use the Side and Volume Up buttons; if it has a Home button, the correct pairing depends on whether the other button is on the side or top. Once the preview appears, use it to crop or mark up the capture before sharing; the saved copy is in Photos, not in a Telegram-specific screenshot album.

How do I screenshot Telegram on a Mac?
Telegram Desktop or Telegram for macOS uses macOS screenshot controls. Press Shift-Command-3 for the entire display, Shift-Command-4 and drag for a rectangle, or Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot controls.

- Open Telegram on the Mac and display the conversation or media.
- For a complete display capture, press Shift-Command-3.
- For only part of the Telegram window, press Shift-Command-4, then drag over the area to keep. Release the pointer to capture it.
- Press Shift-Command-5 when you need the on-screen controls, a different capture mode, or a different save location.
- Look on the desktop for the default file, or open the Screenshot controls to see or change where new captures are saved.
A selected-area capture is useful when a full-screen image would expose another conversation, a notification, or unrelated personal information. Check the selection edges before releasing the pointer; anything outside the rectangle will not be included.
Choose the capture mode based on what the recipient needs to see. A full-screen image preserves the broader context but may include unrelated windows or notifications. A selected-area capture keeps the image focused on the message or media you intend to show. The controls opened with Shift-Command-5 are also the place to change the default desktop destination if you do not want new screenshots saved there.
Where are Telegram screenshots saved?
Telegram does not normally choose a separate screenshot folder. The operating system saves the image, so the location depends on the device.

If an image is missing, first check whether you dismissed an edit preview without saving, then look in the device’s general screenshots album rather than Telegram’s media folder. A protected-screen attempt may produce no file at all.
This separation is useful to remember when you are trying to find a capture: Telegram is the app displaying the conversation, but the phone or Mac handles the screenshot and its storage location. The precise album name can vary on Android, so check both Google Photos and the phone’s Gallery if it has one. On Mac, check the desktop unless you previously changed the save destination in Screenshot controls.
Why can’t I screenshot a Telegram Secret Chat or channel?
Telegram can restrict screenshots as a privacy control. Content protection for private messages, groups, or channels can prevent screenshots and copying, disable forwarding, and limit saving media. The owner or administrator may have enabled the restriction for members-only content.
Protected groups and channels
When content protection is active, a screenshot attempt may be blocked or otherwise limited. This is an intentional restriction, not necessarily a fault with your phone. There is no supported setting in the ordinary screenshot workflow that overrides an owner’s protection choice.

Protection changes more than the screenshot shortcut: Telegram describes it as limiting copying, forwarding, and media saving as well. If a channel or group has applied it, the restriction is tied to the content and the owner’s choice, not to whether you use an Android button combination, iPhone buttons, or Mac keyboard shortcut. Ask the owner or sender for an approved copy if you need to keep or share the information.
Secret Chats
Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted, tied to specific devices, and not stored in Telegram’s cloud. Their privacy model is therefore different from an ordinary cloud conversation. Telegram says it will try to alert the other participant when a Secret Chat screenshot is taken, but the alert mechanism is not reliable on every operating system or client.
Telegram’s FAQ states: “Unfortunately, there is no bulletproof way of detecting screenshots on certain systems (most notably, some Android and Windows Phone devices).” Treat that as a limitation, not as a promise that a notification will appear. A historical Telegram bug report also documents Android-specific blocking and alert behavior on particular versions; it should not be used as a complete compatibility chart for current releases.
Telegram’s FAQ, checked October 25, 2026, also explains that Secret Chat self-destruct timers apply only to messages sent after the timer is set. A timer changes when those messages disappear; it does not prevent a participant from saving what is on screen or taking a photograph with another device. Secret Chat behavior should not be assumed to match ordinary cloud-chat behavior because the chats have different storage and privacy properties.

Does Telegram notify someone when you screenshot?
Sometimes, particularly in a Secret Chat, Telegram may attempt to send a notification. It cannot guarantee detection for every device, operating-system version, Telegram client, or capture method.
Telegram’s API includes a screenshot-notification method for a private chat, which confirms that a notification mechanism exists. That API detail does not establish that every screenshot invokes it, that every alert is delivered, or that a notification proves an image was saved successfully. A person can also photograph the display with another device, which no app-level control can detect or prevent.
What a notification does—and does not—mean
- An alert is an attempted warning, not a universal record of every capture.
- No alert does not prove that the other participant did not save the conversation.
- A Secret Chat self-destruct timer does not stop screenshots or external-camera photographs.
- Telegram’s protection features reduce ordinary in-app copying and capture but cannot control a separate camera.
The practical takeaway is that an alert is not a dependable privacy guarantee in either direction. Do not assume that the other person will always be notified, and do not interpret the absence of a notification as proof that no screenshot was taken. The same is true of a capture attempt that appears to fail: a separate device can still photograph the display.

What is different about ordinary chats, Secret Chats, and protected content?
Choose instructions by both device and chat type. The same button shortcut can work on an ordinary screen yet be refused for protected material.

Do not infer the rules for one category from another. For example, a screenshot that works in a normal cloud conversation does not show that a Secret Chat or protected channel will permit the same action.
There are three separate questions to check before capturing: what device you are using, what kind of Telegram content is on screen, and whether you need the whole display or only a portion. Device determines the keyboard or button shortcut; content type determines whether capture may be restricted; capture intent determines which operating-system mode is most appropriate. Matching all three avoids confusing a protected-content block with a faulty button or a missing saved file.

Use the operating system’s crop or selection tools instead of capturing an entire display and sharing it unchanged.
- Android: tap the screenshot preview and crop to the message or media. If your phone offers a scrolling-capture option, remember that Telegram’s protected content may still refuse it.
- iPhone: tap the lower-left preview, adjust the crop handles, and use Markup if you need to hide names or unrelated text before sharing.
- Mac: use Shift-Command-4 to drag around a specific message or media panel, avoiding other windows and desktop notifications.
Review the final image at full size. Usernames, profile photos, timestamps, notification banners, and other chat messages can reveal more than the portion you intended to send.
Cropping and redacting serve different purposes. Cropping removes material outside the selected frame, while markup can cover details that are inside it. Check the finished image after editing to make sure the information you meant to conceal is no longer visible. Keep only the context needed to explain the message, issue, or media; a larger capture can unintentionally expose other conversations or personal details.
How should I handle a Telegram screenshot safely?
Take the capture only when you have a legitimate reason and permission to share the material. A screenshot can preserve names, phone numbers, private messages, location clues, payment details, or photos even after the original message disappears.
- Confirm that the recipient is the person you intend to contact.
- Crop unrelated messages and system notifications.
- Use the preview editor to obscure sensitive identifiers before sharing.
- Do not assume a Secret Chat alert, self-destruct timer, or protected-content setting guarantees that no copy exists.
- Ask the other participant before redistributing a private conversation, especially when it includes someone else’s personal information.
Protection and good judgment are complementary. Telegram’s controls can limit common in-app actions, but they cannot control a camera pointed at a device’s display. Treat any sensitive text or image as something the recipient could preserve, and share it only with people you trust. If content is protected, use the owner’s approved route for obtaining a copy rather than trying to work around the restriction.
What should I check when screenshots fail?
Work through the failure in this order so you can distinguish a button problem from a Telegram privacy restriction.

- If it fails everywhere, verify the correct button combination for your hardware and try a quick press rather than holding the buttons.
- If it works elsewhere but not in Telegram, test a normal cloud-chat screen and then the original content. A difference points to protected content or a chat-specific restriction.
- Check whether Telegram or the operating system has displayed a message saying screenshots are blocked.
- On Android, look in both Google Photos’ Screenshots collection and the older Gallery location if your device has one.
- On Mac, check the desktop and the destination shown by Shift-Command-5.
- If you need the information but capture remains blocked, ask the sender or channel owner to provide an approved copy rather than attempting to bypass the protection.
Keep the checks in that order: first establish whether the device shortcut works at all, then compare an ordinary Telegram screen with the specific chat or content. If screenshots work elsewhere in Telegram but not in one protected place, changing button timing or searching for a different save folder is unlikely to resolve the content restriction. If the screenshot did occur but you cannot locate the file, check the operating system’s screenshot destination rather than Telegram’s chat media.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Secret Chat messages included in Telegram’s cloud backup?
No. Telegram describes Secret Chats as device-specific and not stored in its cloud. Moving to another device therefore does not make those messages appear there as ordinary cloud-chat history.
Can a disappearing-message timer prevent a screenshot?
No. The timer applies only to messages sent after the timer is set, and it does not stop a participant from taking a screenshot or photographing the display. Telegram may attempt an alert in a Secret Chat, but that alert is not guaranteed.
Why did one Android phone block a Secret Chat screenshot while another allowed it?

Does Telegram have a screenshot button?
