Yes—you can describe the information you want from a URL in ordinary language and receive an answer or structured fields without writing a CSS selector for every page. The important qualification is that an AI extraction layer is only half of the system: a reliable scraper still needs a fetch layer that can render JavaScript, retry failed requests, handle anti-bot measures and, when necessary, retrieve a regional version of a page.
This approach replaces brittle, site-specific parsing rules with a question or field description. It is easier to adapt when layouts move, but it costs more per request and needs validation before you trust the output at scale. Here is how selector-free scraping works, when it is useful, what its limits are and how the documented credit model compares with conventional scraping.

A plain-English scraper lets you state the target in human terms instead of encoding the target as a CSS selector or XPath expression. You might ask for the current price, author name and publication date from a page, or define fields such as title, price and availability with descriptions of what each value means.
The extraction model reads the fetched page and maps its content to your request. In a free-form mode, the result is an answer to a question. In a field mode, the result is typed JSON, which is generally easier to validate and pass to a database or application. WebScraping.AI describes this approach as using large language models to read and extract data from web pages instead of hand-written parsing rules.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That does not mean the service magically bypasses the web. It still has to obtain the page first, and the quality of the final answer cannot exceed the quality of the fetched content.
How does a selector-free scraper work from URL to result?
The system is best understood as two cooperating jobs: retrieval and extraction. Keeping those jobs separate makes failures easier to diagnose.

- Fetch the page. A browser-like client requests the URL. For JavaScript-heavy sites, headless Chromium can render the page before its content is passed onward.
- Deal with access problems. The retrieval layer may use retries, datacenter proxies, residential proxies, stealth techniques and geotargeting. These capabilities are intended to improve the chance of receiving the same content a normal visitor would see in a particular region.
- Prepare the content. A text endpoint can return cleaned, LLM-ready page text, removing much of the navigation and markup that is irrelevant to extraction.
- Apply your instruction. A question endpoint asks the model for a natural-language answer. A fields endpoint supplies named fields and descriptions and asks for typed JSON.
- Validate the response. Your application should check types, required fields, ranges and obvious anomalies before storing or publishing the data.
If a page was blocked, rendered incompletely or returned a consent wall, the model may produce a confident-sounding answer from missing evidence. Treat fetch diagnostics and validation as part of scraping, not optional extras.
What is the difference between question mode, field mode and cleaned text?
Choose the output mode based on what your next system needs. A human-readable answer is convenient for one-off research; named fields are better for repeatable pipelines; cleaned text is useful when you want to run your own analysis.
Free-form question mode
The documented /ai/question endpoint answers a free-form question about a URL. It suits prompts such as “What is the shipping policy?” or “Who is listed as the lead author?” where the wording of the answer matters more than a fixed schema.
Named-field mode
The documented /ai/fields endpoint accepts field names and descriptions and returns typed JSON. A conceptual request might define:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

The exact authentication, host name and request envelope depend on the provider. The important design choice is to describe each field precisely, including its expected type and what to do when the value is absent. Typed output gives downstream code a stable contract, although it does not guarantee that every value is correct.

Cleaned page text
The documented /text endpoint returns cleaned, LLM-ready page text. You can use that output as an intermediate representation for your own model, search index or rule-based parser. It is also a useful diagnostic: if the required information is missing from the cleaned text, changing the extraction prompt will not repair the fetch.
How is AI scraping different from CSS-selector scraping?
Traditional scraping encodes where a value appears in a page’s HTML. AI scraping describes what the value means. Neither approach is universally superior; the right choice depends on how stable the pages are, how much volume you process and how much maintenance you can afford.
| Decision area | Plain-language AI extraction | CSS selectors or XPath |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Write a question or field description for the information you need. | Inspect the HTML and write selectors for each target element. |
| Maintenance when layouts change | Often less tied to exact element paths, so the same description may survive moderate redesigns. | Selectors can break when classes, nesting or page templates change and must then be repaired. |
| JavaScript and anti-bot handling | Still depends on a separate retrieval layer with browser rendering, retries and suitable proxies. | Also depends on the fetcher; selectors do not solve blocked or unrendered pages. |
| Output shape | Can return a natural-language answer or typed JSON fields. | Usually returns the text or attributes selected by your code; you define the schema yourself. |
| Per-request economics | Uses paid AI and retrieval credits, so each extraction has a variable service cost. | Local parsing is usually cheaper per page after infrastructure is running. |
| Best fit | Many sites with changing templates, irregular content or a need for semantic interpretation. | Very high-volume, stable pages where predictable latency and low unit cost matter most. |
A practical architecture can use both: a selector for a highly stable, high-volume field and an AI request for irregular text. That hybrid decision should be based on measured failure rates and operating cost, not on the assumption that one method replaces every other parser.

It can work when the retrieval layer successfully renders and accesses the page, but AI extraction itself does not defeat an access block. The documented stack describes headless Chromium for browser rendering, rotating datacenter, residential and stealth proxies, retries and geotargeting.
JavaScript rendering matters when the initial HTML contains only an application shell and the product list, article body or price appears after scripts run. A retry policy helps with transient network errors, while geotargeting can retrieve a regional variant when a site changes content by country. Proxies and stealth measures may improve access, but they are not a guarantee against every login wall, CAPTCHA, robots policy or paid subscription.
- Check whether the fetched text contains the target content before blaming the model.
- Record HTTP status, redirects and retrieval timing when the provider exposes them.
- Expect different results from different regions if the site localizes currency, inventory or language.
- Respect the site’s terms, access controls and applicable law; changing the parser does not grant permission to collect data.
How should I describe fields so the JSON is useful?
Precise field definitions reduce ambiguity. Name the business concept, specify the type and state how to handle missing or repeated values.
Define one concept per field
Use publication_date for the date an article was published, not a broad field called date that could mean an update, review or event date. If you need both, define two fields.

State the expected type and unit
Ask for a number when you need arithmetic, a Boolean for a yes-or-no condition and an array when multiple values are valid. For money, specify whether the value should include a currency code and whether a displayed range should remain a range rather than being reduced to one number.
Describe absence and repetition
Tell the extractor what to return when a value is not present, and say whether repeated cards should become an array of objects. This prevents a model from filling a missing value with nearby but unrelated text.
Test before scaling
Run a representative sample across different templates, regions and content states. Compare the returned fields with the page, keep a small set of expected answers and spot-check failures before increasing request volume. There is no independent accuracy benchmark established here, so your own labeled sample is the meaningful quality test for a production pipeline.
How much does an AI web-scraping API cost?
Credit pricing is vendor-specific and can change. The following figures are claims on WebScraping.AI’s pricing page, accessed October 26, 2026, rather than an independent cost study.
| Offering | Published allowance or price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Free credits | 2,000 API credits | Allowance shown on the vendor’s current page when accessed October 26, 2026. |
| Starting paid plan | 250,000 credits for $29 per month | Monthly starting plan shown on the same page; pricing is subject to change. |
| AI extraction usage | Five additional credits | Vendor states that AI extraction consumes five additional credits. |
| Plain AI request usage | Six credits | Vendor states that a plain AI request consumes six credits. |
Do not estimate a project’s budget from the headline allowance alone. Retrieval, browser rendering, proxy choice, retries and the number of fields or AI calls can all affect consumption. Measure the credits used by a representative workflow, then multiply by your expected page count and include a margin for retries.
For a prototype, free credits can be enough to test prompts and page types. A sustained crawler needs a cost comparison against local parsing, including engineering time spent repairing selectors and operating browsers.
When are CSS selectors still the better choice?
Selectors remain attractive when the page template is stable, the target fields are unambiguous and volume is high enough that AI fees dominate the economics. A deterministic parser also gives you predictable transformations and can be easier to audit for regulated data.

- Use selectors first for a small number of stable templates with well-defined HTML.
- Use AI extraction first when you monitor many unrelated sites or the same concept appears in different layouts.
- Use a hybrid when a few fields are stable but descriptions, policies or irregular metadata require semantic interpretation.
- Reconsider the design when pages require authentication, expose only a user-specific view or prohibit automated access. An extraction model cannot remove those constraints.
The strongest reason to choose AI is reduced per-site rule writing, not a promise of perfect accuracy or unlimited scale.
What can go wrong, and how do I recover?
Most failures fall into a small number of categories. Diagnose the layer that failed before changing the prompt.
The response is empty or incomplete
Inspect the fetched text. A JavaScript shell, consent screen, timeout or blocked request means the extraction model had insufficient evidence. Enable the provider’s browser rendering or retry behavior where available, and verify the regional route.
The answer uses the wrong value
Make the field description narrower, distinguish publication from update dates and require the expected type. Compare the response with the source page and add a validation rule that rejects impossible ranges or unexpected units.
The JSON shape changes
Use named fields with explicit types, keep field names stable and validate required keys before writing to storage. Send invalid responses to a review queue rather than silently coercing them.
The bill grows unexpectedly
Count retrieval attempts, retries and AI calls separately. Cache pages when your use case permits it, avoid asking multiple questions that could be represented by one fields request and measure credit consumption before increasing concurrency.
Results vary between runs
Preserve the raw page text and response for each request, record the retrieval time and region, and compare runs against the same input. Content can legitimately change between fetches, so reproducibility requires storing the evidence used for the decision.

What is a sensible rollout plan for a plain-English scraper?
Start with a narrow, observable pipeline rather than sending every page directly into a database.
- Choose a representative sample. Include the page templates, languages, regions and edge cases you expect in production.
- Define the schema. Write field descriptions, types, required keys and rules for missing values.
- Test retrieval. Confirm that browser rendering, retries and regional access deliver the content you need.
- Test extraction. Compare typed results with manually checked values and record errors by category.
- Add safeguards. Reject malformed JSON, impossible values and missing required fields; retain raw evidence for review.
- Measure economics. Track credits, latency, retry rates and correction time against a selector-based baseline.
- Scale gradually. Increase concurrency only after quality and credit usage remain within your limits.
This process turns “describe what you want in English” into an engineering system with measurable inputs and outputs. The language interface reduces selector maintenance, while validation and monitoring provide the discipline that selectors traditionally supplied.
Is a plain-English API a replacement for a normal scraper?
No. It is a different extraction strategy layered on top of the same practical scraping requirements. It is most valuable when semantic instructions can save substantial per-site development and repair work; it is less compelling when deterministic selectors already handle a stable, high-volume template cheaply.
The safest expectation is adaptability, not infallibility. Fetch the right page, describe fields precisely, validate every response and sample results before scaling. With those controls, selector-free extraction can make a multi-site scraper faster to build and easier to adjust without pretending that the hard parts of web access have disappeared.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the free credit allowance enough for a proof of concept?
It can be, if you test a small sample and count every retrieval, retry and AI call. The documented allowance is 2,000 credits, while the vendor lists five additional credits for AI extraction and six credits for a plain AI request; your actual sample should determine how many complete page workflows that supports.
What should I save when an extraction is wrong?
Keep the URL, retrieval timestamp, region, cleaned page text, request fields and raw response together. That evidence lets you determine whether the page changed, the fetch was incomplete or the instruction was ambiguous instead of guessing from the final value alone.

Can I use the returned JSON directly in a database?
Validate it first. Check required keys, data types, currency or units and plausible ranges, and route failures for review rather than silently converting malformed values.
Does plain-English scraping remove my responsibility to follow site rules?
No. Replacing selectors with a language instruction changes how data is interpreted, not whether automated access is permitted. Review the target site’s terms, access controls and applicable privacy requirements before collecting or redistributing content.
