Preserve an X post while you can still open it. For your own account, request X’s downloadable archive ZIP. For another person’s accessible public post, save the exact post URL in the Wayback Machine and inspect the resulting replay. If that page is incomplete, record it with an interactive browser archivist such as ArchiveWeb.page and export the capture. Keep the original URL, capture time, replay or file, and a second copy. None of these methods can recover a post that nobody saved before it disappeared.
A block does not automatically hide public posts: X says blocked accounts can still see posts set to public, while protected posts are visible only to approved followers. Preservation must never be used to bypass a protected account, login restriction, or other access control.

What should you save before an X post disappears?
Save more than a screenshot. The most useful preservation set contains the exact /status/ URL, the author’s handle, visible date and context, a replayable archive or exported file, and the time you captured it. Save media and important linked pages separately because a post capture may not include every reply, image, video, or outbound link.
- Your own account: use X’s first-party archive export. It is the only method here designed to cover your account’s posts and attached media in bulk.
- An accessible public post: submit its individual URL to the Wayback Machine, then open and inspect the saved page.
- A dynamic or incomplete page: browse it with ArchiveWeb.page, verify the replay, and export WARC or WACZ.
- An already-deleted post: search for an earlier capture. A later search cannot create a capture that was never made.
Keep one untouched original export and a separate backup. An account archive can contain private information, so store it as confidential data.

How do I download all my own X posts?
X provides an account-data export in a ZIP file. It can include posts, attached images, videos and GIFs, plus other personal account data, and X says the request may take a few days.
- Sign in to X on the web.
- Open More → Settings and privacy → Your account → Download an archive of your data.
- Confirm your password when X asks.
- Select Request archive. If your account shows a different label, use the currently visible archive-request control; X’s help pages have used more than one navigation path.
- Wait for X’s email or in-app notification, sign in as instructed, and download the ZIP.
- Preserve the unopened ZIP as your first copy. Then inspect its HTML and JSON files and confirm that the posts and media you need are present.
The export is not a way to download somebody else’s full history. It is tied to the account that requests it. Because the archive may include direct messages and other personal information, use encrypted storage and limit who can access it.

How do I archive someone else’s accessible public post?
Use the individual post URL, not just the profile URL or a search-result page. A URL submission creates a record only if the archiver can fetch the page and its resources at that moment.
- Open the post while it is still accessible.
- Copy the complete URL, including the author’s path and numeric
/status/identifier. - Separately record the author, visible publication date, surrounding thread context, and your capture time.
- Submit the URL with Wayback Machine Save Page Now.
- Open the returned capture. Do not rely only on a success message.
- Check the saved text, images, video playback, replies, quoted posts, and outbound links. Open and archive important linked pages separately.
Internet Archive explicitly says this method saves a single page, not the whole site. A successful capture therefore does not prove that an entire thread, profile, or linked article was preserved.
How should I preserve a thread?
Submit each important post’s individual URL. Start with the original post, then capture replies or follow-up posts that carry essential context. Record the order yourself because a single-page replay is not a thread backup.

Does the Wayback Machine save the whole X thread?
No. Save Page Now is a single-page operation, and some pages cannot be crawled successfully. A thread can also depend on JavaScript-loaded replies, media hosts, or links outside the submitted URL.
After every save, inspect the replay for the exact material you need. If the text is present but a video is not playable, treat the video as unpreserved and capture any accessible media page separately. If the first post is saved but replies are missing, submit those reply URLs individually rather than assuming they are included.
What can I do when a URL capture is blank or incomplete?
Use an interactive browser capture while you can still view the post. ArchiveWeb.page records material as you browse, supports replay, and exports WARC and WACZ files. Material held locally remains private unless you share it.
- Start an ArchiveWeb.page recording session.
- Visit the exact X post and scroll through the content you need, including lazy-loaded text, images, replies, and media controls.
- Allow pending resources to finish loading. Watch the capture-status indicator rather than assuming that a page visit means every request was saved.
- Use instant replay before closing the session. Confirm that the post text and required media actually render.
- Export the verified capture as WARC or WACZ.
- Keep the exported file with the original URL and capture timestamp, and make a separate backup.
ArchiveWeb.page’s documentation describes the workflow and privacy model at webrecorder.net/archivewebpage. Its behavior is not a guarantee that a particular X post or media file will be captured; replay is your quality check.

Is there a specialist option for one available post?
Social Archiver documents conditional support for post text, supported media, quotes, previews, X Articles, and visible replies, depending on what X makes available. It also documents bookmark import. Its guide warns that deleted, restricted, or account-limited material may be unavailable, and says an optional signed-in session does not bypass X controls: Social Archiver’s X guide.
Can I archive an X post if someone blocks me?
It depends on whether the post is public or protected, not simply on the fact of a block. X’s help center states: “If your posts are set to public, accounts you have blocked can see your posts.” A protected account limits viewing to approved followers.

If a public post remains visible to you, preserve it through the normal URL and browser methods above. Do not attempt to evade a protected account, a login wall, or another person’s access permission. If the block prevents you from seeing the post, ask the author or an authorized viewer for a copy rather than using circumvention tools.
Blocking also does not make a post permanent. The author can delete it, change visibility, or remove the account after you save it, so verify and duplicate the capture promptly.

How can I find a deleted X post?
Look for a capture made before deletion. Check the exact post URL in the Wayback Machine and inspect the archived page and timestamp. If you do not know the URL, an archive lookup such as Xarchive can help locate Wayback-indexed captures associated with a public account, but it does not reconstruct a post that was never captured.
- Recover the exact URL from browser history, bookmarks, notifications, quoted posts, or messages.
- Search that URL in the Wayback Machine.
- Open each candidate timestamp and verify that it contains the actual text or media, not merely a listing card.
- Save the replay URL and its timestamp with your notes.
- If no usable snapshot exists, report recovery as unconfirmed.
X says deleted post content ceases to be publicly available on X, although copies on third-party sites may remain. A missing archive result is therefore not proof that the post never existed; it means no usable earlier capture was found in the places checked.
Is a screenshot enough evidence?
A screenshot preserves appearance, not automatic authorship or timing. It can be edited, stripped of context, or copied from a fabricated post. For stronger provenance, retain the original post URL, a timestamped replay or exported archive, the capture time, and any downloaded media in its original form.
Research on screenshot attribution discusses checking suspicious-looking posts against live and archived records; see the published arXiv paper. Treat an image as one piece of evidence, not as independent proof of who posted it.

Which preservation method fits my situation?
| Situation | Primary copy | Where it lives | Scope | What you must verify | Privacy note |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your own account | X archive export | Downloaded ZIP | Account posts, attached media, and other account data | Required posts and media appear in the HTML/JSON files | May include DMs and other private data |
| Accessible public post | Wayback Save Page Now | Public replay URL | One submitted page | Text, images, video, replies, and links | Publishing someone else’s content can raise separate privacy concerns |
| Dynamic or incomplete page | ArchiveWeb.page | Local WARC or WACZ export | Material you manually browse | Capture status and instant replay | Local material stays private unless shared |
| Post already gone | Existing archive lookup | Earlier replay, if one exists | Only what was captured before deletion | Underlying page and timestamp, not a search card | No archive can create a never-saved copy |
What are the reliability, timing, and storage trade-offs?
- Timing: X’s account export may take a few days, so request it before you need it. A still-accessible public URL can be submitted immediately.
- Completeness: URL archiving is convenient but page-scoped. Browser capture gives you more control over scrolling and lazy-loaded material, but you must verify the replay yourself.
- Reliability: Bot checks, login walls, rate limits, JavaScript failures, deleted content, and unavailable media can all leave gaps. Record exactly what was and was not captured.
- Storage: Keep the ZIP, WARC or WACZ, replay URL, and notes together, then place a second copy on separate storage. A 1TB portable external SSD is an optional destination for that second copy; its capacity is storage, not a recovery guarantee.
- Cost: The cited X, Wayback, and Webrecorder documentation does not establish a universal preservation fee or a guaranteed capture rate. Do not treat a free submission as proof of completeness.
What should I do if preservation fails?
The archive says saved, but the replay is blank
Open the replay at a different timestamp if available, then try an interactive browser capture while the page is still accessible. Check whether the failure is limited to JavaScript, media, or the entire document, and record that limitation.
The text is present but images or video are missing
Capture the individual media URL or linked page separately when it is publicly accessible. Preserve a local copy only when you have the right to do so, and label it with the source URL and capture time.
The post requires sign-in
Do not treat a login wall as permission to bypass access controls. For your own account, use X’s archive export; for someone else’s restricted post, request a copy from an authorized person.
The post was deleted before I acted
Search the exact URL in existing archives and inspect timestamps. If no earlier replay contains the content, state that recovery is unconfirmed instead of presenting a screenshot, snippet, or rumor as the original.
The archive contains sensitive information
Restrict file permissions, encrypt backups, and avoid publishing private messages or personal data. An account ZIP is broader than a post export, so review its contents before sharing it.

How we picked these methods
The choices above are separated by ownership and access, storage location, scope, completeness, timing, and privacy. X’s export is first-party and account-wide; Wayback is a public single-page replay; ArchiveWeb.page is a locally held browser capture; and an archive lookup can only locate an earlier copy. The right workflow is the one whose scope matches the material you are allowed to view and need to preserve.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I preserve an X post without making it public?
Yes. A local ArchiveWeb.page session can remain private until you choose to share its WARC or WACZ export. Keep the file on access-controlled storage and share only material you have permission to distribute.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11What information should I put in a preservation record?
Record the exact post URL, author handle, visible date, capture time and time zone, tool used, replay URL or filename, and a note about missing media or replies. That log lets another person distinguish the original source from later copies.
Should I archive quoted posts and linked articles too?
If they matter to the meaning of the post, capture them as separate URLs. A single-page save does not imply that quoted content, replies, or outbound pages were preserved.
Can an API screenshot replace X’s account archive?
No. A screenshot API creates a visual capture of a URL, while X’s export is the account-level ZIP that can include posts, attached media, and other account data. Use the account export for your own history and a URL capture for an individual public page.
