Run every untrusted agent workload in a separate sandbox, and choose the isolation boundary to match its behavior. Use a VM-backed runtime such as Kata Containers when generated code may be adversarial, needs a full Linux kernel, drives a browser, or makes many low-level system calls. Use gVisor when the runtime is compatible and you need faster starts with dynamically allocated resources. In either case, expose as little as possible: no host sockets, no broad host paths, no unnecessary capabilities, no raw credentials, and no unrestricted network.

A sandbox is not a magic escape-proof box. The files, credentials, devices, control-plane APIs and network routes you grant to the workload remain reachable if the workload is compromised. Treat every host integration as a trust boundary, separate mutually distrusting tenants, and continuously patch and test the guest kernel, virtual-machine monitor, runtime and images.

What does it mean to isolate an AI agent?

Isolation means placing the agent’s generated code, package installs, browser sessions and tool calls behind a boundary that is different from the host operating system and from other tenants. The boundary should limit four things independently: kernel access, files and devices, credentials, and network destinations.

A conventional container shares the host kernel. A microVM boots a separate guest Linux kernel behind hardware virtualization, so a kernel exploit in the guest has an additional virtualization boundary to cross. Google Cloud describes its sandbox model as each Pod running in its own microVM with strict isolation from other Pods and the host. Kata Containers exposes a similar model to Kubernetes through a RuntimeClass and compatible container runtimes.

gVisor takes a different route. Its userspace Sentry kernel and Gofer process service or intercept many system calls instead of allowing the workload to call the host kernel directly. Linux namespaces and capabilities add defense in depth. This is stronger than an ordinary shared-kernel container for many workloads, but it is not a full virtual machine and its system-call and device compatibility differ.

The practical consequence is that “containerized” is not a sufficient security description. You must specify the runtime, what is mounted, which capabilities remain, how credentials are delivered, and where traffic can go.

Should I use a microVM or gVisor?

Choose a microVM for hostile or full-kernel workloads; choose gVisor when lower startup time and dynamic resource use matter and the application fits its compatibility model. Validate the choice with your own workload and policy tests rather than treating published figures as universal benchmarks.

Decision axis MicroVM path (for example, Kata) gVisor path
Kernel boundary Dedicated guest Linux kernel behind hardware virtualization Userspace Sentry kernel and Gofer mediate system calls; host kernel is still part of the trusted computing base
Best fit Unsupervised code generation and execution, browser-driving agents, hostile inputs, full-kernel or unusual system-call requirements Compatible Python, Node.js, Java, Rust, PHP or Go workloads where fast starts and elastic resources are important
Startup Approximately one to two seconds in Google Cloud’s 2026 documentation for its microVM implementation Less than 200 ms in Google Cloud’s 2026 documentation for its gVisor implementation
Documented overhead 250 mCPU and 130 MiB of memory per Pod in that Google Cloud documentation Not stated in the supplied comparison
System-call and device compatibility Closer to a normal Linux host because a guest kernel is present; still verify required devices More compatibility constraints because calls are handled by Sentry and Gofer
GPU or TPU access Depends on the VMM, guest configuration and platform integration; verify explicitly Depends on supported device mediation; do not assume passthrough
Tenant isolation Stronger hardware-backed boundary, but network, storage and control-plane separation are still required Use a separate sandbox for each mutually distrusting customer; compromise can reach anything that sandbox can access
Operational model Guest kernel, VMM, runtime and image lifecycle Sentry, Gofer, host kernel, runtime and image lifecycle

The Google Cloud numbers are documentation values for its GKE implementation, not a promise for every Kubernetes distribution, machine type or workload. A one-second launch can still be the right trade when an agent handles hostile input; a sub-200-millisecond launch can still be unusable if a required syscall or device is unsupported.

When is a microVM the safer default?

Use a microVM when the agent writes and executes code without a person approving each command, installs packages from the internet, controls a browser, or needs kernel features that are difficult to mediate. Kata Containers is a Kubernetes-facing option; other platforms may expose a different microVM monitor, such as a Firecracker-based runtime. The security property comes from the complete platform configuration, not the product name alone.

When is gVisor sufficient?

gVisor is a good fit for ordinary language runtimes and services that pass compatibility testing. It can reduce cold-start cost and let the platform allocate resources dynamically. Keep each customer or trust domain in a separate sandbox, because a compromise inside one gVisor sandbox can still use that sandbox’s mounts, credentials and network permissions.

How should I define the threat model?

Write down what the agent is allowed to do before selecting a runtime. The same agent may be low risk in a read-only repository and high risk when it can modify production infrastructure.

  • Generated code: assume prompts, tool output and generated files can contain malicious instructions or exploit code.
  • Packages and artifacts: treat downloaded package scripts, compilers and archives as untrusted, even when a package registry is allowlisted.
  • Browser automation: web pages can attack the browser, expose secrets through page content or induce the agent to make unwanted requests.
  • Host and tenant separation: decide whether another customer, a build job or only the host must be protected.
  • Kernel and device needs: list required syscalls, filesystem features, accelerators and browser dependencies before choosing gVisor.
  • Network destinations: specify which model APIs, package registries, source repositories and internal services are necessary; everything else should be denied.
  • Data lifetime: define whether workspaces are disposable, whether artifacts leave the sandbox, and how logs are retained.

This threat model determines whether a shared-kernel container is unacceptable, whether a microVM’s startup cost is acceptable, and which policy violations must terminate a run.

What is the deployment sequence?

Use the following order so that convenience integrations do not silently widen the trust boundary.

  1. Classify the workload. Record whether it executes arbitrary code, installs packages, drives a browser, handles hostile files, needs a full kernel or serves multiple tenants.
  2. Select a runtime class. In Kubernetes, select a Kata or other microVM-backed RuntimeClass for hostile or full-kernel work. Select gVisor for a compatible workload where startup and elastic resource use dominate.
  3. Build a minimal image. Include only the language runtime, tools and certificates required for the task. Pin package versions and image digests, remove compilers and shells that are not needed, and rebuild when the base image or guest kernel is patched.
  4. Remove privilege. Drop every Linux capability, disable privilege escalation, use a non-root user, apply seccomp and keep namespace isolation enabled. If a component truly needs a capability, document the exact operation and isolate that component in its own sandbox.
  5. Limit files. Give the agent only the files it needs. Prefer a read-only clone or mountless mode for local work. A direct read-write host mount makes changes live on the host and turns a file permission mistake into a host-integrity incident.
  6. Broker credentials. Do not put long-lived API keys, cloud metadata tokens or SSH keys in the image or environment. Use a broker that issues the smallest, shortest-lived credential for one operation and records its use.
  7. Deny network egress. Start with no outbound traffic. Add narrowly scoped rules for package registries, model endpoints and required internal services, and block access to cloud metadata, control-plane endpoints and private address ranges unless explicitly needed.
  8. Separate trust domains. Run mutually distrusting customers and jobs in separate sandboxes, with separate service accounts, volumes, network policies and encryption keys. Do not assume that a runtime boundary alone creates multi-tenancy.
  9. Observe and test. Log sandbox creation and deletion, image and runtime versions, file access, network requests, policy denials and credential use. In staging, exercise malicious packages, hostile browser pages, path traversal, excessive resource use and attempted control-plane access before production rollout.

How do Kubernetes Agent Sandbox and Kata fit together?

Kubernetes Agent Sandbox supplies a common API for short-lived code execution, coding agents, computer-use agents and CI/CD jobs. It can use gVisor or Kata backends, allowing an orchestration layer to request a sandbox without hard-coding one isolation implementation.

That API standardizes lifecycle management, not the security outcome. You still need a restrictive RuntimeClass, pod security settings, network policy, storage policy, service-account rules and image controls. A permissive volume mount or service account can undo much of the benefit of a stronger runtime.

What should the Kubernetes policy include?

  • Pin the approved runtime class and reject workloads that request the ordinary shared-kernel runtime.
  • Require non-root execution, read-only root filesystems where practical, dropped capabilities and no privilege escalation.
  • Use dedicated namespaces and service accounts for each trust domain.
  • Apply default-deny ingress and egress, then allow only named services and registries.
  • Constrain CPU, memory, process count, ephemeral storage and execution time to prevent denial of service.
  • Keep persistent volumes out of disposable sandboxes unless a narrowly scoped, encrypted workspace is essential.

How do local Docker Sandboxes protect an agent?

Docker Sandboxes place local agents in microVMs and mediate workspace access, network access, credentials, Docker Engine access and MCP connections. This is useful for a developer who wants an agent to edit or run code without giving it unrestricted access to the laptop.

Start with a disposable or read-only workspace when the agent is inspecting a repository. Add a read-write workspace only when the task requires edits, and understand that those edits are intentionally visible to the host. Keep Docker Engine access disabled unless the agent must build or run containers; that socket is effectively a high-trust integration.

Local MCP servers run on the host and should be treated as trusted integrations. An MCP server can expose files, commands or network actions beyond the microVM, so approve each server, restrict its arguments and avoid connecting servers that carry production credentials to an untrusted agent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I isolate browser automation and package installation?

Give browser-driving agents and package-installing agents the same sandbox discipline as arbitrary code. A browser is an input parser and network client, while package managers execute installer hooks; both can turn apparently harmless data into code execution.

Browser workflow

  1. Run the browser and its helper processes inside the sandbox, not on the host.
  2. Use a separate disposable profile for each run; never reuse a personal profile, cookies or password store.
  3. Allowlist only the domains needed for the task and block local-network and metadata addresses.
  4. Return screenshots, extracted text or selected files instead of exposing the browser’s full filesystem.
  5. Destroy the profile and sandbox after the job, retaining only reviewed artifacts and security logs.

Package workflow

  1. Use a pinned lockfile and a registry allowlist; reject redirects to unapproved hosts.
  2. Install into an ephemeral filesystem with bounded disk and process limits.
  3. Run build scripts without credentials and with network disabled after downloads finish.
  4. Cache packages outside the sandbox only through a controlled, content-addressed service.
  5. Record package names, versions, hashes and installer output so a later investigation can reproduce the run.

Which mounts, capabilities and credentials are dangerous?

Most practical escapes are not a dramatic hypervisor exploit; they are excessive authority granted to a process that was never supposed to have it.

Integration Safer default Why it matters
Host filesystem No mount; otherwise a narrow, read-only path Read-write mounts make host modifications immediate and can expose SSH keys, source code or configuration.
Container or Docker socket Do not mount it; use a brokered build service if required Socket access can grant control over other containers or the host engine.
Linux capabilities Drop all; add one only for a documented operation Capabilities expand what a compromised process can do even inside a restricted namespace.
Credentials Short-lived, operation-scoped tokens from a broker Environment variables and image layers are easy to copy and persist in logs or artifacts.
Devices and accelerators Expose none unless the workload requires one Device access changes the kernel and hardware attack surface and may bypass expected policy.
MCP and host tools Explicitly approved servers with narrow methods Host integrations can perform actions outside the microVM’s filesystem and network boundary.

How do I measure performance without weakening isolation?

Measure cold-start latency, steady-state CPU and memory, syscall-heavy throughput, browser responsiveness, image-pull time and queueing delay under the same machine type and limits. Compare a representative agent trace, not a synthetic “hello world.”

Google Cloud’s 2026 comparison reports gVisor startup at less than 200 ms and microVM startup at approximately one to two seconds, with microVM overhead of 250 mCPU and 130 MiB of memory per Pod. Those values describe Google Cloud’s implementation and should be treated as planning inputs, not portable benchmarks. If a queue can hide a one-second launch, the stronger boundary may be worthwhile; if thousands of tiny jobs dominate, gVisor’s startup profile may materially improve utilization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not trade away network policy, credential brokering or tenant separation to improve a benchmark. Optimize image size, warm only a carefully isolated pool, and cap concurrency before relaxing the security boundary.

What residual risks remain after using a microVM?

A microVM reduces the blast radius but does not make the workload trustworthy. Kata documentation emphasizes that isolation is not multi-tenancy by itself; network, storage and control-plane isolation remain necessary.

gVisor does not protect against vulnerabilities in higher-level components before the sandbox, Spectre-style CPU side channels or compromise of the workload itself. A compromised agent can still delete its workspace, exfiltrate every credential it was given, attack allowlisted services or poison artifacts.

Both paths depend on a patch program. Update the guest kernel or Sentry and Gofer components, VMM, host kernel, container runtime and base images. Revoke credentials when a run ends, rotate keys after a suspected breach, and preserve enough lifecycle and policy logs to identify which image, runtime and service account handled an artifact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I troubleshoot a failed or unsafe run?

Symptom Likely cause Safe correction
Agent fails immediately with “operation not permitted” gVisor compatibility, a dropped capability or a blocked syscall Inspect the denied syscall, replace the dependency or move only that workload to a microVM; do not enable broad privilege as a first fix.
Package installation hangs Egress is denied or the registry is outside the allowlist Permit the exact registry through a proxy, verify TLS and hashes, then disable network for installer scripts.
Code changes appear on the host A read-write host mount was supplied Use a read-only clone or an isolated export directory and review the mount policy.
Browser cannot reach a required site Domain, DNS or proxy policy is too narrow Allowlist the specific domain and required DNS/proxy path; keep local-network and metadata ranges blocked.
One tenant can see another tenant’s artifacts Shared volume, service account or cache Use separate sandboxes, namespaces, encryption keys and content-addressed caches with explicit authorization.
Resource exhaustion affects other jobs Missing CPU, memory, process, storage or time limits Set per-run quotas and terminate on violation; investigate the workload before increasing shared limits.

What is the safest reference architecture?

A robust design has an unprivileged control plane that creates one disposable sandbox per agent run. The sandbox receives a minimal image, a read-only source snapshot or isolated workspace, a short-lived brokered token and a default-deny network policy. A policy engine records every requested mount, capability, device, credential and destination before admission.

Inside the sandbox, the agent and its browser or package manager run as non-root processes. An artifact gateway accepts only selected outputs after scanning and metadata checks. The control plane destroys the sandbox on completion or timeout, revokes its token, and stores immutable lifecycle, file, network and policy logs. Separate runtime classes or clusters can enforce stronger boundaries for hostile tenants while gVisor handles compatible lower-risk jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI coding agent run in a microVM without internet access?

Yes. Give it a repository snapshot and local toolchain, then use a default-deny egress policy. If dependencies are needed, prefetch and verify them through a controlled service rather than enabling unrestricted outbound traffic.

Should every agent run get a new sandbox?

For mutually distrusting users or tasks, a fresh sandbox per run is the clearest boundary and simplifies cleanup. A warm pool can reduce startup cost, but only when instances are reset, credentials are revoked and no filesystem, browser profile or process state crosses trust boundaries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do microVMs prevent data exfiltration?

No. They limit access to what the workload can reach, but an agent can exfiltrate any files, tokens or services you expose. Egress controls, scoped credentials and output review are required in addition to virtualization.

How should I handle GPU access for an isolated agent?

Treat GPU or TPU passthrough as a separate security and compatibility decision. Verify that the chosen runtime, guest kernel, driver stack and scheduler support the device, and expose it only to workloads whose threat model permits the added hardware surface.
