Run an XRPL validator only when you can provide production-grade hardware, strict network isolation, protected validator keys, and an operating routine for updates and health checks. An xrpld server sends validation messages, but other servers trust those messages only when their Unique Node List (UNL) includes your validator. Installing a package is not the same as running the new release: the documented legacy Linux auto-update job deliberately does not restart the service. A safe operation therefore means backing up identity and configuration, updating deliberately, restarting xrpld, and confirming the expected identity, peer connectivity, validator-list status, and a server_state that spends most of its time proposing.
What does an XRPL validator do, and when is it trusted?
An XRPL validator runs the xrpld core server and issues signed validation messages during ledger consensus. Running the process alone does not make the node trusted. A server considers your validations when your validator is included in that server’s Unique Node List (UNL).

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis distinction affects both setup and expectations. You can operate a technically healthy validator whose messages are not used by a particular server because that server’s UNL does not contain your key. Validator operation is therefore two jobs: keep the server synchronized and available, and make sure the organizations or lists that should rely on it have the correct public key.
Older installations and guides may call the software rippled. The core binary was renamed to xrpld under XLS-0095, and the main configuration file changed from rippled.cfg to xrpld.cfg. Treat those names as version and migration clues rather than as two different consensus systems.

What hardware and operating-system requirements should I meet?
The production recommendations are substantially higher than the documented testing minimum. Use a supported 64-bit Linux installation on suitable bare-metal hardware, synchronize its clock, and size storage for sustained database activity rather than headline capacity.
| Component | Production recommendation | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 64-bit x86_64, 3 GHz or faster, at least 8 cores | Published system guidance, not an independent benchmark. |
| Memory | 64 GB RAM | The documented 16 GB testing minimum is not considered sufficient to stay reliably synchronized with Mainnet. |
| Network | Gigabit interface on an enterprise data-center network | Bandwidth and connection quality both matter; a fast port on an unstable path is not equivalent. |
| Storage | SSD or NVMe capable of at least 10,000 sustained IOPS | Check sustained workload performance, not only peak or advertised burst IOPS. |
| Database partition | At least 50 GB | Leave operational headroom for logs, package files, and growth. |
| Timekeeping | NTP through a daemon such as ntpd or chrony |
Correct system time is required for dependable operation. |
The recommendations are for production operation; they do not promise a particular uptime or performance on every machine. Consumer storage that happens to have enough capacity is not automatically suitable if it cannot sustain the required I/O under validator workload.
How do I install the official stable xrpld package?
For Ubuntu or Debian, use the XRP Ledger Foundation’s current stable-package instructions and verify the repository key before enabling it. The supported examples list Ubuntu 20.04 or later and Debian 11 or later on x86_64, with glibc 2.31 or newer. Distribution support, repository commands, and package names can change, so use the live installation page for the exact commands at installation time.
- Prepare a clean, supported host. Confirm the architecture, Linux release, glibc version, hostname, storage mount, and NTP synchronization. Do not begin on a host that is already short on disk space or memory.
- Verify the signing key independently. The installation documentation shows the sample fingerprint
B655416741221F780FBCFBC9AA84D41A11D29FA9and a sample key date of 2026-08-18. These are volatile package-signing details; compare the fingerprint with the current official page immediately before use rather than copying an old value into an unattended script. - Add the official repository and install the stable package. Follow the current Ubuntu/Debian commands, then record the installed version so you can distinguish the package you installed from the version currently running.
- Keep administration local or restricted. Before enabling validator functions, configure firewall rules and management access so the validator’s APIs are not reachable from the public internet.
- Confirm the service identity. Use your service manager’s status and log commands to ensure the process starts cleanly. A running process is only a preliminary check; synchronization and consensus participation must be verified later.
Do not assume that the repository’s latest package includes every auxiliary utility. Tool contents differ by release, which is particularly important for validator-keys.
How do I create validator keys and enable validator mode?
Use the official validator-keys workflow that matches the installed release. It creates a validator identity and a token used by xrpld; the master key file is the recovery material that must not remain on the server.
- Generate the identity and token on a controlled system. Follow the version-matched validator-keys instructions. Starting with 3.3.0 packages, the utility is installed at
/usr/bin/validator-keys; the documented 3.2.0 packages did not include it, so do not assume that path exists on an older installation. - Protect the master key immediately. Copy the master key file to encrypted, offline storage that you can recover during a host failure. Do not leave it on the validator host, in a shell history, in a shared ticket, or in an unencrypted cloud folder.
- Place only the required token on the server. Add the generated token to the
[validator_token]section ofxrpld.cfg. Restrict the configuration file; Linux mode0600is the documented recommended example. - Restart and verify the public identity. After the service restart, confirm through
server_infothat the validator public key is the one you recorded. This catches an accidentally replaced configuration or identity database before you rely on the node. - Plan revocation. If the master secret is exposed, revoke the validator key immediately and issue a replacement through the documented procedure. Treat a suspected leak as a key incident, not as a password change that can wait for the next maintenance window.
Keep an inventory containing the public key, software version, host role, backup location, and the date each backup was tested. Never put the secret itself in that inventory.

How should I isolate the validator from the public internet?
Official guidance is explicit: “Validators should not be accessible to the public. Do not allow public WebSocket access to your validator server or any other form of public access.” Put the validator behind a restrictive firewall, allow only the peer and administration paths you actually need, and expose administrative APIs through a controlled management network rather than a public address.
A private validator also needs deliberate peering. A server with no fixed peers and no usable discovery path cannot connect to the network. XRPL documentation describes three broad approaches:
| Peering choice | Control and maintenance | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Discovered peers | Lowest maintenance; peers are found automatically. | Less control over which peers are selected, and peer changes or disconnects can occur. |
| Self-operated proxies | More control over topology, filtering, and redundancy. | Additional servers, cost, patching, monitoring, and design work; resilience depends on how the proxies are deployed. |
| Public hubs | Small configuration burden and little infrastructure to operate yourself. | Reliance on third parties; busy hubs may reject or drop connections. |
Choose based on your threat model and operational capacity. A proxy design can improve separation between public peering and the validator, but it is not automatically safer if it is deployed as a single, unmaintained point of failure.
How do I update xrpld safely?
Use a controlled maintenance sequence: identify the current version, back up identity and configuration off-host, install the intended package, restart the service yourself, and verify health. Never equate “package downloaded” with “new code is serving ledgers.”
1. Record the pre-update state
- Write down the installed package version and the version reported by the running server.
- Record the validator public key and confirm that your offline master-key backup is available and recoverable.
- Check disk space, memory pressure, peer count, synchronization state, and recent service errors.
- Schedule enough time for a restart and catch-up. Do not begin immediately before a period when nobody can inspect the node.
2. Back up what would be expensive to recreate
Make an off-host backup of xrpld.cfg, validator-list configuration, the persistent node-identity database, and (for a validator) validator-keys.json. Keep the master key in its separate secure offline location. Test that the backup can be read; a file that was copied but cannot be decrypted or restored is not a usable backup.
3. Install the intended release
Follow the current manual update instructions for your operating system and repository. Review package changes and confirm that the installed version is the one you approved. Avoid mixing an old migration recipe with a newer package layout.

4. Restart explicitly
The documented legacy Linux auto-update page describes a cron script that installs a release within about an hour of publication but deliberately does not restart xrpld. The service therefore continues to run the old binary until you restart it. On a systemd host, the operational action is typically:
sudo systemctl restart xrpld
sudo systemctl status xrpld
Use the service name and unit layout actually installed on your host. If you still use a legacy unit or a container, apply the equivalent controlled restart and verify the process version afterward.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
5. Treat the old cron mechanism as legacy
Packages published at packages.xrplf.org do not include update-rippled-cron or its script, according to the update documentation. If that is your package source, remove the obsolete cron symlink and use the current manual update process instead. Leaving an old job in place can create an update path that your present package no longer supports.
How do I know my XRPL validator is working after a restart?
Use the administrative server_info method after every update, restart, or network change. Check identity, server state, peers, and validator-list freshness together; no single “service is active” indicator proves that the validator is participating correctly.
- Confirm the validator public key. Compare the identity returned by
server_infowith your recorded key. A mismatch indicates the wrong token, configuration, or node-identity data and should be resolved before further operation. - Inspect
server_state. The node can briefly reportfullorvalidatingwhile it starts or catches up. A healthy validator should spend most of its time inproposing; if it does not, investigate instead of assuming the restart succeeded. - Check
peers. Confirm that the server has a healthy network connection rather than an empty or continually failing peer set. Review firewall rules, fixed-peer configuration, proxy availability, and routing if connections do not persist. - Check
validators. Ensure the validator list is present and not expired or close to expiration. A node can have network peers while operating with stale validator-list information. - Review logs during catch-up. Look for repeated connection failures, database errors, configuration parse failures, or a process that exits after launch. Resolve the underlying condition and repeat the identity and state checks.
Automate these checks as monitoring assertions, but alert on sustained conditions rather than a single transient state during startup.
How do I migrate an older rippled installation to xrpld?
Migration is version-specific. The documented procedure covers a rippled 3.1.3 to xrpld 3.2.0 transition; it is not a universal recipe for every future release. Match the migration guide to your actual installed version and package source.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Stop and inventory the existing service. Record the package version, service unit, data directories, validator public key, peer settings, and configuration paths.
- Back up off-host before changing packages. Preserve the main configuration, validator-list configuration, persistent node-identity database, and
validator-keys.jsonwhen present. Keep the master key in its secure offline backup. - Account for renamed files. The binary changes from
rippledtoxrpld, and the main configuration changes fromrippled.cfgtoxrpld.cfg. Update service definitions and scripts only as directed by the matching migration guide. - Install the target release and restore compatible data. Do not blindly copy every old file into a new layout. Preserve identity and validator material while allowing the migration instructions to specify which paths and formats are supported.
- Start and validate. Confirm the public key, peer connections, validator-list freshness, and predominantly
proposingstate before declaring the migration complete.
If your starting version is not 3.1.3, or your destination is not 3.2.0, use the corresponding current migration documentation rather than extrapolating from that example.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I troubleshoot first when the validator is unhealthy?
The package updated but the server reports the old version
Check whether the update mechanism restarted the service. The documented legacy cron job does not. Install the approved package, perform an explicit restart, and verify the running process version rather than relying on package-manager output.
The service runs but never reaches proposing
Check synchronization, peer connectivity, validator-list freshness, clock synchronization, and the configured validator token. A service can be “active” while disconnected, catching up, or using the wrong identity.
The validator has no peers
Verify that discovery or fixed peers are configured for the chosen topology. A private server without fixed peers cannot connect. Then inspect firewall rules, proxy health, DNS or routing, and whether a public hub is overloaded.
The public key changed unexpectedly
Stop treating the node as trusted until you identify the cause. Compare the token, xrpld.cfg, persistent node-identity database, and backup copies; restore the known-good configuration only after preserving evidence and checking that the master secret was not exposed.
The host is slow or falls behind
Compare the machine with the production recommendations, especially 64 GB RAM and storage sustaining 10,000 IOPS or better. Check sustained disk latency, available space, CPU contention, and time synchronization; the 16 GB testing minimum is explicitly not a reliable Mainnet target.

What is a practical operating checklist?
- Daily or automated: alert on loss of peers, stale validator lists, prolonged non-
proposingstate, clock drift, disk exhaustion, and repeated service restarts. - Before every update: record the running version, verify the offline key backup, export configuration and identity data off-host, and confirm a maintenance contact is available.
- During every update: install only the intended release, remove unsupported legacy update jobs when required, restart explicitly, and watch logs through catch-up.
- After every update: verify the expected public key,
server_state, peers, validator-list status, and the version actually running. - After any suspected key exposure: revoke immediately and follow the replacement procedure; do not continue operating indefinitely on a compromised secret.
This discipline protects the two assets that are hardest to replace: a stable consensus connection and the validator identity represented by your keys.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I run an XRPL validator on a small virtual machine?
The official production guidance targets 64 GB of RAM, at least eight 3 GHz cores, gigabit networking, and storage sustaining 10,000 IOPS or better. A documented 16 GB setup is described as a testing minimum and is not considered sufficient for reliably staying synchronized with Mainnet, so a small VM should not be treated as production-capable merely because the daemon starts.
Does installing a newer xrpld package automatically restart the validator?
Not with the legacy Linux cron mechanism described in the official update documentation: it installs the release but intentionally leaves the running service untouched. The operator must perform a controlled restart and then verify the running version and health state.
Where should I store the validator master key?
Keep the master key encrypted, offline, and recoverable, separate from the validator host and its ordinary configuration backups. The server needs the generated token, not a casually accessible copy of the master secret; exposure requires immediate revocation.
Why does my validator show full or validating instead of proposing?
Those states can appear briefly while the server starts or catches up. If the node does not spend most of its time proposing, check synchronization, peers, validator-list freshness, software version, clock accuracy, and the configured identity before considering it healthy.
Is the rippled-to-xrpld migration procedure the same for every release?
No. The published example specifically describes 3.1.3 to 3.2.0, including the binary and configuration-file rename. Use a migration guide matching your actual source and destination versions, and back up identity and configuration data before changing packages.
