Yes, you can run useful AI models entirely on your own PC without understanding every acronym first. Install a local runner such as LM Studio or Ollama, download model weights, load them into memory, and use the model for drafting, summarizing, coding help, rewriting, or private document questions. Your prompts and files can remain on the computer, and local software does not charge a per-message cloud fee. The trade-off is that your hardware determines model size and speed: graphics memory (VRAM), system RAM, storage, and electricity replace the convenience of a remote data center.
The practical starting point is simple: use the computer you already own, choose a quantized model that fits with memory to spare, and add a graphics card with at least 12GB of VRAM if you want comfortable 8B–14B models and your current machine cannot hold them.

What does “running an AI model locally” actually mean?
A local large language model (LLM) is downloaded to your computer and executed there. The model’s weights—the numerical data learned during training—sit on your drive, while your CPU, GPU, or Apple unified-memory system performs inference (generates the next token of text). NVIDIA describes this as running AI workflows on your own PC or workstation.
In a local session, the prompt, conversation history, uploaded documents, and generated answer can stay on that machine. Once the model files and application are installed, document chat can work without an internet connection. That makes local inference useful for confidential notes, source code, internal documents, or travel situations where connectivity is unreliable.

“Free” means something narrower than zero cost. Ollama lists a $0 tier for running models locally, and neither Ollama nor LM Studio requires a recurring subscription for the local runtime itself. You still provide the computer, disk space, electricity, and time needed to download and manage models. A small local model may also be less capable or slower than a premium cloud model.
Which local-AI acronyms and numbers do I need to understand?
You do not need machine-learning training to get started, but seven terms explain almost every hardware and model choice.

An LLM is the text-generation model. You download its weights, then a runner such as LM Studio or Ollama loads those weights and produces text from your prompts. “Model” and “LLM” are often used interchangeably in this context.
Parameters: 3B, 8B, 14B and larger
Parameters are the learnable weights inside a model. “8B” means roughly eight billion parameters; “14B” means roughly fourteen billion. Larger models generally have more capability, but they require more memory and usually generate tokens more slowly on the same hardware. Parameter count is not a quality guarantee: training data, architecture, tuning, and quantization also affect results.
VRAM and RAM (or unified memory)
VRAM is the dedicated memory on a graphics card. It is the most important capacity limit when you want GPU acceleration: the model weights, runtime overhead, and part of the context must fit. System RAM can hold model data when dedicated VRAM is insufficient, but moving work between system memory and the GPU usually reduces performance. Apple Silicon systems use unified memory, which is shared by the processor and graphics cores.
Quantization: Q4 and Q8
Quantization stores weights at lower numerical precision. A Q4 variant uses less memory than a Q8 variant of the same model, making a larger model possible on consumer hardware. The trade-off is quality: NVIDIA warns that aggressive quantization can reduce response quality. If two variants fit comfortably, a higher-precision one is generally the safer choice; if neither fits, a smaller quantized model is more useful than an oversized model that constantly swaps to disk.

Tokens per second
Tokens are the chunks of text a model reads and generates. Tokens-per-second is a practical speed measure for output. It varies with model size, quantization, context length, GPU, CPU, memory bandwidth, and the application, so a published speed number is not a promise for your PC.
Context window
The context window is how much prompt text, conversation history, tool output, and retrieved document text the model can consider at once. A larger context helps with long documents but consumes additional memory. Leave headroom rather than sizing hardware so tightly that the model fits only with an empty chat.
Dense versus mixture-of-experts (MoE)
A dense model uses all of its parameters for each token. A mixture-of-experts model contains multiple expert blocks but activates only a subset for each token. MoE models can have a large total parameter count while using fewer parameters per token; memory requirements still depend on the stored weights and runtime, not just the active subset.
How do I run a model locally for the first time?
The sequence is the same regardless of whether you choose a graphical app or a terminal-oriented runner: install the runtime, download a compatible model, load it, and test with a small task.
- Check your machine first. Note your operating system, dedicated VRAM, total RAM or unified memory, and free SSD space. Close memory-heavy applications during your first test so the result reflects the resources available to the model.
- Choose a runner. LM Studio provides a graphical model browser, chat interface, settings panels, and local APIs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Ollama provides a native Windows application and a workflow aimed at terminal users, scripts, and local API clients.
- Install the application. Use the installer for your operating system and accept the default local model-storage location unless your system drive is too small. If you move storage, select a fast SSD with ample free capacity.
- Find a model in the app’s model browser or catalog. Start with a parameter size your memory can support. Look for a quantized variant when the full-precision file would exceed your VRAM or RAM. Downloading model weights can take minutes or hours depending on file size and connection speed.
- Load the model. The runner allocates memory for the weights and runtime. If loading fails, select a smaller model or more aggressive quantization, reduce the context setting, or allow more work to use system RAM.
- Run a controlled test. Ask for a short summary or a small code explanation before attempting a long document. Watch generation speed, memory use, and whether the application begins swapping to disk.
- Add your real workflow. LM Studio’s document-chat feature can keep files and processing on the computer after the model is present. Ollama is convenient when you want to call the local model from scripts or another application through its local API.
Keep the first model download modest. Once you know how much memory and storage it consumes, you can move up one size category without guessing.
Should I choose LM Studio or Ollama?
Both can run models locally without a recurring local-model subscription. The better choice depends on whether you want visual controls or an automation-first workflow.

| Decision point | LM Studio | Ollama |
|---|---|---|
| Primary interface | Graphical model browser, chat window, and settings panels | Terminal-friendly runner with a native Windows app |
| Operating systems | macOS, Windows, and Linux | Windows support includes NVIDIA and AMD Radeon GPUs; other platform support depends on the current release |
| Model discovery | Browse and download models through the application | Pull models through its runner and manage them for repeated use |
| Offline documents | Document chat can run entirely offline after files and model weights are present | Local models can be used in an offline workflow; document handling is typically assembled through the runner or an API client |
| Automation | Offers local APIs for applications that need a graphical setup as well | Strong fit for scripts, terminal workflows, and API-driven tools |
| Best first fit | Readers who want to see models, context settings, and chats in one interface | Readers comfortable with commands, integrations, or controlling the runtime from another program |
Pick one rather than installing both immediately. They can use substantial duplicate storage if you download the same model in each environment.
What GPU and memory do I need for local models?
VRAM is the clearest first filter. NVIDIA’s current examples map model sizes to these GPU-memory categories, while WindowsCentral gives similar guidance for common consumer models.
| Available dedicated VRAM | Example model class | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 6–8GB | Qwen 3.5 4B | Good entry point for compact quantized models; keep context and other GPU workloads modest |
| 12–16GB | Qwen 3.5 9B or Gemma 4 12B | More capable 8B–14B quantized models with useful headroom, depending on the exact quantization and context |
| 24GB or more | Qwen 3.6 27B | Room for substantially larger models, although speed and context still depend on the rest of the system |
These are examples, not guarantees: the exact file, quantization, context length, runtime overhead, and operating-system use all change the fit. WindowsCentral recommends at least 8GB of VRAM for 3B–8B models and about 12GB for 8B–14B models. A graphics card with 12GB or more is therefore the practical upgrade target for someone whose current PC cannot comfortably run mid-sized quantized models.
CPU-only inference is possible, but it is much slower. It can still be adequate for short prompts, occasional rewriting, or testing whether a workflow is useful before buying hardware. If the model spills from VRAM into RAM, responses may remain correct while becoming noticeably less responsive.
How much RAM and storage should I plan for?
System RAM matters even with a large GPU because the operating system, application, context, and document index also need memory. Leave capacity for normal desktop use; a model that technically fits after you close every other program is not a comfortable everyday setup.
Storage is easier to underestimate. Ollama’s Windows documentation warns that model storage may require tens to hundreds of gigabytes. A 1TB SSD is a practical category if you expect to keep several model sizes, multiple quantizations, and document-related files. Keep free space for future downloads and temporary files, and prefer an SSD over a hard drive so loading and swapping do not become additional bottlenecks.

How should I pick a model and quantization?
Start from the task, then choose the largest model that fits with context headroom. A compact 3B–4B model can handle straightforward rewriting and summaries. An 8B–14B model is a stronger general-purpose choice when your GPU can hold it. Larger models may improve difficult reasoning or coding, but the extra memory and slower generation can outweigh the benefit for routine work.
- Use a smaller quantized model when you need responsiveness on 6–8GB of VRAM or a CPU-heavy system.
- Use a higher-precision variant when it fits comfortably and answer fidelity matters more than maximum model size.
- Reduce context first when loading succeeds but long chats become slow or fail; context consumes memory independently of the model’s parameter count.
- Keep two sizes for different jobs rather than forcing one large model to handle quick notes and long document sessions alike.
Test the same prompt on two candidate models and compare factual accuracy, instruction following, and speed. Tokens per second is useful, but a faster model that needs repeated corrections may cost more of your time.
What can local AI replace, and what can it not?
Local models are well suited to drafting, rewriting, summarizing, coding assistance, and question answering over private documents. They can remove per-use cloud charges for those tasks and keep routine work available when you are offline.
They do not automatically replace the strongest hosted models. Smaller local models may miss subtle instructions, produce weaker code, or need more editing. Hardware limitations can make long-context work slow, and downloading, updating, and storing several models takes effort. Electricity is an ongoing operating cost, especially if a powerful GPU runs for hours each day.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A sensible split is to keep routine, sensitive, or high-volume work local and reserve a hosted service for tasks that genuinely need its larger model, current web information, or specialized tools. Local inference is a tool choice, not a guarantee that every cloud bill disappears.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are local prompts and files really private and offline?
They can be, provided the model, runner, and documents are on your computer and you do not connect the workflow to an external service. LM Studio’s documentation explicitly describes document chat as entirely offline after the files and model are present. Ollama’s local tier likewise refers to running models on your own machine.

Offline does not mean automatically secure. Your operating system, backups, plugins, API clients, and any cloud-connected application around the runner can still transmit data. Use normal account security, disk encryption, access controls, and careful file selection. Disconnecting the network during a sensitive test is the clearest way to verify that a workflow has no external dependency.
What should I do when a local model is slow or will not load?
- “Out of memory” while loading: choose a smaller parameter count, a lower-memory quantization, or a shorter context. Close other GPU applications and leave headroom for the runtime.
- Model loads but generates very slowly: check whether inference is using the GPU or falling back to CPU/RAM. A model that exceeds VRAM can remain usable but may slow dramatically.
- Long documents cause failures: reduce context length, split the document, or use a smaller retrieval chunk. More context is not free memory.
- Downloads fill the drive: remove duplicate or unused model files and move the model directory to a larger SSD before collecting more variants.
- Answers are poor after aggressive quantization: try a higher-precision variant that still fits, or step down to a smaller model with better-quality weights.
- Offline chat cannot find a file: confirm that the document is stored locally, the runner has permission to read it, and the model itself has finished downloading.
What does local AI really cost?
The software entry price can be $0 for local use: Ollama documents a free local tier, and LM Studio’s local workflow does not require a per-message subscription. Your effective cost is the hardware you already own or buy, electricity, SSD capacity, and your time spent managing models.
Recommended Free Tools
For many people, the economics work when a modest local model handles frequent summaries, drafts, or code explanations that would otherwise consume a cloud plan. There is no universal savings figure because usage, hardware ownership, and electricity rates differ. Treat “hundreds saved” as a personal result, not a guaranteed return, and measure whether the model is accurate and fast enough for your actual workload.
What is the most practical upgrade path?
Start with your existing computer and a small quantized model. If the workflow proves useful but memory is the bottleneck, upgrade in this order:
- Add or free SSD capacity so model downloads do not compete with the operating system.
- Increase system RAM if normal applications force the model into swapping.
- Move to a GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM when you want comfortable 8B–14B models.
- Choose 24GB or more only when your tasks justify larger models such as the 27B class and you accept higher power, cost, and potentially lower tokens-per-second.
This approach avoids buying a large graphics card before you know whether local inference fits your work. The largest model is not automatically the best value; the best model is the one that answers accurately at a speed you will actually use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a local AI model browse the web by itself?
No. The model can generate answers from its downloaded weights and the text you provide, but it has no live web access unless you deliberately connect it to a separate browser, retrieval system, or API. An offline setup therefore cannot know events or pages published after its training data.

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Do I need to train a local model before using it?
No. Downloaded weights are ready for inference, so you can chat, summarize, rewrite, or ask questions immediately. Training or fine-tuning is a separate, much more demanding process and is not required for normal local use.
Can two applications use the same local model at once?
Sometimes, but concurrent sessions divide memory and compute. Running separate copies can duplicate memory use, while a shared local API may let multiple clients send requests through one loaded runtime; the exact behavior depends on the runner and model.
How do I keep a local model from using the internet?
Keep the model and documents on local storage, avoid cloud-connected extensions, and run a test with the network disabled. Also review firewall rules and the permissions of any application that connects to the runner.
