A useful game production stand-up focuses on the shared goal, meaningful progress, today’s work and handoffs, and any blocker that needs help. Its purpose is to leave the team with a practical next-day plan—not to make every person recite a task diary. For a formal Scrum team, the Daily Scrum is a 15-minute event for the people creating the Increment; a studio using a different process can adapt the agenda to its own cadence.
What should a game production stand-up accomplish?
By the end of the check-in, teammates should understand whether work is moving toward the team’s current goal, what has changed since the last meeting, what work or handoffs matter next, and who will follow up on obstacles. That is more useful than simply hearing that everyone was busy.

For a Scrum team, the reference point is the Sprint Goal. The 2020 Scrum Guide describes it this way: “The Sprint Goal is the single objective for the Sprint.” An update is therefore most useful when it helps the team inspect progress toward that goal and decide on an actionable plan for the next day. A studio stand-up outside Scrum can use the same coordination principle, but it should not be presented as though every Scrum rule automatically applies.
Game production makes coordination especially visible: a playable build, art asset, design decision, audio pass, or test result may need to move between disciplines. A short check-in can expose those dependencies while there is still time to arrange a handoff or request a decision. It should not try to solve every production problem in the room.

What belongs on the agenda?
Use a short sequence that connects the goal to work, dependencies, and follow-up. The prompts below are adaptable; they are not a claim that every game team tracks the same artifacts.
- Name the goal or near-term outcome. State the Sprint Goal if the team is using Scrum, or the current production outcome otherwise. Keep this brief and use it to judge which updates matter.
- Share meaningful progress. What was completed, became testable, changed direction, or is now ready for another discipline? Mention work that affects teammates rather than listing every task touched.
- Identify today’s priority and handoffs. What needs to happen next, who depends on it, and what must be delivered or reviewed? For example, a build may need a testing pass, or an art asset may need a design decision before another discipline can continue.
- Surface blockers and emerging risks. State what is in the way, how it affects the goal, and what help or decision is needed. Keep the stand-up focused on identifying the issue and its owner, not diagnosing every detail.
- Confirm ownership and the next action. Name who will pursue a blocker or handoff and what happens next. If a longer conversation is needed, identify the small group that should continue after the meeting.
Those elements cover the practical questions people often bring to a check-in: “What did we finish?”, “What’s blocked?” and “What needs a handoff today?” They are prompts, not mandatory lines each person must recite in turn. Scrum Alliance’s guidance puts the distinction plainly: “The daily scrum is not a status meeting or status report.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow can you fit the check-in into 15 minutes?
For a formal Daily Scrum, 15 minutes is the timebox set by Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland in the 2020 Scrum Guide. It is a prescribed limit, not an industry average or a guarantee that every production discussion can be completed in that time. The Guide also says the event is held at the same time and place each working day of the Sprint. Teams using another process can choose a different cadence.
A practical way to use the time is to keep the whole team oriented to the goal, move quickly through work that changes another person’s plan, and defer detailed problem-solving. One possible flow is:

- Start: Re-state the Sprint Goal or current production outcome.
- Middle: Walk the board or discuss the progress, dependencies, handoffs, and blockers that matter to that outcome.
- Close: Confirm the next actions and owners, then identify any follow-up conversation.
This is a suggested flow, not a required Scrum script or a fixed allocation of minutes to each item. If an update does not affect the goal, another person’s work, or a decision that needs attention, it may not need airtime. If a problem needs debugging or a lengthy design discussion, capture who will stay to work on it rather than allowing it to consume the team-wide check-in.
Should everyone answer the same three questions?
No. The traditional “What did I do yesterday? What will I do today? What’s blocking me?” format can be a useful starting point, but the 2020 Scrum Guide lets developers choose the structure as long as the Daily Scrum remains focused on the Sprint Goal and produces an actionable plan.
A round-robin may work when it quickly exposes relevant updates, but it can also produce disconnected individual reports. A board walk or a focused discussion of blocked work may better show how one person’s progress or delay affects another person’s next step. Choose the format that makes shared dependencies visible, not the one that sounds most like a roll call.
In Scrum, the Daily Scrum is for the developers. “Developers” means the people creating any aspect of the Increment, not only programmers. The Product Owner orders backlog work, and the Scrum Master helps the team remove impediments. A producer can facilitate or coordinate follow-ups, but the meeting should not become a manager-by-manager status inspection.

How should updates reflect game production work?
Use examples tied to the team’s current phase and actual dependencies. A feature team working toward a playable build may need to discuss whether that build is ready for another discipline to inspect. A team preparing an art or audio handoff may need to identify a pending design decision. A testing group may need to say that a build is not available or that a discovered issue affects the current goal. An upcoming review may need a named owner or a decision made in time for other work to proceed.
These are prompts, not a universal checklist of production artifacts. A small team, a team in an early design phase, and a team preparing a review may have different useful signals. The test for including an update is whether it helps colleagues coordinate their next work, understand a dependency, or act on a risk.
For Scrum teams, distinguish work that is in progress from a usable, verified Increment that meets the team’s Definition of Done. Calling a task “finished” in a verbal update does not itself establish that it meets that quality bar. If another discipline still needs to inspect or integrate the work, say so clearly rather than implying the handoff is complete.
For example, an illustrative update—not a report from a real studio—might be: “The new encounter is in the build for review. Today I’m handing the animation timing to design. I need a decision on the attack cue before audio can finalize its pass; Maya and I will resolve that after this check-in.” The useful information is the review state, the handoff, the dependency, and the follow-up—not a long account of activity.

What should happen when someone raises a blocker?
Make the obstacle understandable, connect it to the shared goal, and identify the help or decision needed. Then assign someone to pursue the next action. The meeting is a place to surface a blocker, not necessarily the place to resolve it in full.
For instance, “audio is blocked” gives the team little to act on. A more actionable update says what audio is waiting for, what work is affected, and who can help obtain the missing decision or asset. Keep the explanation short enough for the team to understand the impact and ownership; take detailed debugging, design debate, or investigation to the people who need to do that work.

A stand-up is not the only opportunity to raise a blocker. If an obstacle becomes urgent after the check-in, the people who can help should hear about it then rather than waiting for the next daily meeting. The stand-up should make follow-up visible, not create a rule that delays action until the next time everyone gathers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should the team record decisions and follow-ups?
Use the existing board or task record to show the changed or confirmed plan, the relevant handoff, and who owns follow-up. Avoid creating a second status document that can drift out of sync with the work. If a conversation needs a smaller group, name the participants and next action before the team disperses.

In-person teams may use a physical board alongside software. Game-production practitioner Harvard Bonin described preferring a tactile board while using software in conjunction; that is one practitioner’s preference, not a rule for every studio. Atlassian’s guidance describes preparing Jira board filters, while Asana discusses live check-ins when working hours overlap and asynchronous updates when teams are spread across time zones. The tool matters less than whether the team can see the work and follow-up clearly.
When choosing between a board walk and person-by-person updates, ask which format reveals dependencies better. When choosing live or asynchronous updates, consider whether working hours overlap and whether the team can still make decisions quickly enough. A distributed team may use written updates for routine progress and arrange a live conversation when a decision or blocker needs timely collaboration.

- Individual status inspection: The meeting is for coordination toward a shared goal, not a sequence of reports to a manager.
- Long problem-solving sessions: State the blocker and the help needed, then continue the detailed work with the relevant people.
- Backlog reordering or showcase-style reviews: Move those activities to the event or conversation where they belong rather than expanding the daily check-in.
- Activity without context: “I worked on the level” is less actionable than explaining what changed and whether another person can now proceed.
- Unowned follow-up: A blocker that is mentioned but has no next action or owner is easy to lose after the meeting.
- An oversized cross-team meeting: If several teams have interdependent work, use a separate cross-team coordination practice where appropriate instead of forcing every contributor into one unwieldy stand-up.
The intended output is a next-day plan the team can act on, plus visible ownership for follow-ups where needed. A concise meeting is not successful merely because it ends quickly; it is successful when the people who depend on one another leave with a clearer path forward.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if a teammate cannot attend the stand-up?
Use an agreed way for that person to share a relevant update and see decisions or handoffs afterward, especially if the team spans time zones. An update should still identify dependencies and next actions; a bare list of completed tasks does not replace coordination.
Can a game team have more than one stand-up?
A single meeting is not automatically the right format for several teams with interdependent work. Keep each team’s check-in focused on its own shared goal, and use a separate cross-team coordination conversation when dependencies span teams.
Does a production stand-up have to happen every day?
The Scrum Guide’s Daily Scrum is held each working day of the Sprint, but a studio check-in outside Scrum can set a cadence suited to its process. Whatever the cadence, urgent blockers should be raised when they arise rather than held until the next scheduled meeting.
