If a Windows upgrade causes crashes, missing hardware, application failures, or a non-booting PC, use the least destructive rollback that matches the change. Remove one recent update first; use Go back for a feature upgrade within Microsoft’s 10-day window; use System Restore or a point-in-time restore for broader recent changes; and reserve Reset this PC or a USB reinstall for serious corruption. Back up accessible files before any recovery action, and locate your BitLocker recovery key before using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Most rollback methods preserve personal files, but they do not all preserve applications, drivers, settings, or changes made after a restore point.

Which rollback method should I use?

Match the rollback to the size and timing of the change. A monthly quality update or driver update calls for a targeted uninstall, while a full Windows feature upgrade calls for Go back. System Restore handles a wider system change, and a point-in-time restore returns the PC to the state represented by a selected restore point.

Method Best for What it changes Personal-file impact Does Windows need to boot normally?
Uninstall update One recent quality, security, or driver update Removes the selected update Personal files and apps are kept; some updates cannot be uninstalled No. It is available in WinRE
Go back A recent feature upgrade to a new Windows version Removes apps, drivers, and settings added or changed after the upgrade Personal files are kept Normally, although WinRE can be used if available
System Restore A recent system-wide change Rolls back system files and settings, including affected apps, drivers, updates, and settings Personal files are not affected No. WinRE provides the option
Point-in-time restore A restore point exists from before the failure Returns the Windows PC to the exact state represented by that restore point Changes made after the point can be lost, including new files and installations No. WinRE provides the option
Reset this PC Persistent problems after less disruptive recovery fails Reinstalls Windows and removes apps and settings You choose whether to keep or remove personal files No
USB reinstall Severe corruption or a PC that will not recover Reinstalls Windows; a clean install can remove everything Depends on the installation choices; a clean install can erase the drive No

The four questions that matter are how much of the system must be rolled back, whether personal files survive, how far back the method can reach, and whether the computer can start Windows.

What should I do before attempting a rollback?

Preparation prevents a recovery operation from turning a software problem into a data-loss problem. Do these checks before selecting a recovery option.

  1. Stop repeated update attempts. If Windows keeps reinstalling or retrying the same upgrade, stop the cycle rather than restarting the process repeatedly. Repeated failures can leave the machine in recovery mode without improving the underlying problem.
  2. Copy important files while Windows still works. Back up documents, photos, project folders, browser exports, and any files stored locally. Microsoft recommends backing up before recovery. If Windows is unstable, copy the most irreplaceable files first to an external drive or another trusted location.
  3. Find the BitLocker recovery key. WinRE may require it to unlock an encrypted system drive. Retrieve the key before starting recovery, particularly if you are working on a laptop whose usual sign-in does not unlock the drive.
  4. Record what changed and when. Note the first crash, missing device, or application error and whether it began immediately after a monthly update, driver update, or feature upgrade. That timing determines which rollback is least disruptive.
  5. Connect the computer to power. Do not begin a long restore on a nearly empty battery. A shutdown during a point-in-time restoration can leave the device unusable.

How do I uninstall a single Windows update?

Use Uninstall updates when the problem started immediately after one recent monthly or driver update. This is the narrowest rollback and normally keeps personal files and installed apps.

When Windows still starts

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Windows Update, then open Update history.
  3. Select Uninstall updates.
  4. Choose the update associated with the failure, confirm the removal, and restart when Windows requests it.

After restarting, reproduce the original problem once rather than immediately installing several other updates. Some updates cannot be removed; Windows will either omit the uninstall control or report that the package is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When Windows will not boot

Enter WinRE and choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Uninstall updates. Select the available quality or feature update option, follow the prompts, and allow Windows to restart. If the update is not listed, move to the recovery method that matches the broader change instead of forcing a removal.

How do I use Go back after a feature upgrade?

Go back is for a recent upgrade to a new Windows version, not for an isolated driver or monthly patch. Microsoft’s current support guidance documents this option for 10 days after upgrading.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then Recovery.
  3. Under the recovery options, select Go back if it is available.
  4. Choose a reason, continue through the warnings, and let Windows complete the rollback.

Your personal files are kept. However, apps, drivers, and settings added or changed after the feature upgrade are removed because Windows is restoring the previous version’s environment. Make a note of any newly installed software or hardware configuration you will need to restore later.

If Go back is not shown, the documented 10-day availability period may have ended, or the required previous-version files may no longer be available. Do not substitute a clean install merely because the button is absent; try System Restore or another recovery option first.

When is System Restore the right choice?

Use System Restore when the failure follows a broader recent system change and a suitable restore point exists. It rolls back system files and settings, including recently installed apps, drivers, updates, or configuration changes, while leaving personal files unaffected.

Start System Restore from Windows

Search Windows for Recovery, open the recovery tools, and choose Open System Restore. Select a restore point dated before the problem began. Review the affected programs list when Windows offers it; this shows which applications and drivers will be changed, not which personal documents will be deleted.

Start it from WinRE

If Windows cannot start, open Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore in WinRE. Select the Windows installation, enter the requested account credentials, choose a restore point, and confirm. Keep the computer connected to power until Windows reports completion.

System Restore is not a substitute for a file backup. It is designed to reverse system configuration, not to provide a historical copy of every document. If the restore point you need does not exist, use another method rather than selecting an arbitrary point.

How does a point-in-time restore work?

A point-in-time restore returns the Windows PC to the exact state represented by a selected restore point. That snapshot can include the system drive’s apps, settings, and files, so it reaches further than simply removing one update.

Microsoft states that restore points are created approximately every 24 hours and retained for up to 72 hours by default. Those defaults are not a guarantee that a point from a particular date exists; Windows may have no usable snapshot if creation was disabled, storage was reclaimed, or the failure occurred outside the retention window.

  • [Warranty Policy]: 12-month warranty, our products are of good quality and we promise that any problem about the product within one year since you buy, it will be guaranteed for free.

Selecting a restore point

  1. Enter WinRE and choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Point-in-time restore.
  2. Select the restore point that predates the upgrade-related failure.
  3. Review the date and the change that created the point before confirming.
  4. Start the restoration and leave the PC connected to power until it finishes.

Changes made after the selected point can be lost. That may include new files, software installations, settings, passwords, certificates, and keys. Cloud files stored in OneDrive are not affected by the local restore, but any local copies created after the point still need their own backup. Never power off during the operation; Microsoft warns that an interruption can leave the device unusable.

What if Windows will not boot after the upgrade?

Use WinRE rather than repeatedly trying a normal startup. WinRE exposes the same targeted recovery tools without requiring a successful Windows boot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the built-in recovery menus

From WinRE, open Troubleshoot → Advanced options. Select Uninstall updates for one recent update, System Restore for a broader system change, or Point-in-time restore when a suitable snapshot exists. Follow the option-specific prompts and do not interrupt a restore.

Use a recovery drive or installation media

If the built-in options fail, start the PC from a recovery drive or Windows installation media. Microsoft specifies a USB drive of at least 8 GB for installation media. Creating a recovery drive erases the USB drive, so use an empty drive or copy its contents elsewhere first. Keep the drive available until you have confirmed that Windows starts and your files are accessible.

Installation media can provide repair tools before you commit to reinstalling Windows. Choose repair and recovery options first; a clean installation should be considered only after backups are confirmed because it can remove everything.

When should I use Reset this PC?

Use Reset this PC when the system remains unreliable after update removal, Go back, or restore operations. Reset reinstalls Windows and removes installed apps and settings. Windows lets you choose whether to keep personal files or remove them, but the keep-files option is not a replacement for an independent backup.

  1. Open WinRE or Windows recovery settings and choose Reset this PC.
  2. Select the option to keep personal files only if you have verified that the files are backed up and you understand that applications and settings will be removed.
  3. Choose the remove-files option only when you have a complete backup and are intentionally preparing the PC for a clean start or transfer.
  4. Let the reset finish without powering off the computer.

After the reset, reinstall applications, reconnect hardware, and restore settings in stages. Introducing everything at once makes it harder to identify which program or driver caused the original failure.

When is a USB reinstall justified?

A USB reinstall is the last-resort path for severe corruption, an unusable recovery environment, or a PC that cannot boot from its internal installation. Installation choices determine the data impact: a repair-oriented setup may preserve some data, while a clean install can erase the system drive and all personal files.

Before starting, verify the backup on another device, confirm that you have the BitLocker key, and make sure the installation USB contains the correct Windows edition and architecture for the PC. Use an 8 GB or larger USB drive for Windows installation media, and remember that creating recovery media erases that USB.

How can I choose the least destructive recovery path?

Use this sequence when the cause is uncertain:

  1. One update, immediate failure: uninstall that update.
  2. New Windows version, within 10 days: use Go back.
  3. Several system components changed recently: use System Restore.
  4. A restore point clearly predates the failure: use point-in-time restore, after backing up files created since that point.
  5. Windows remains damaged: use Reset this PC and select the file-preservation choice only when it matches your backup plan.
  6. Recovery tools cannot repair the installation: boot from USB installation media and consider a clean reinstall only after confirming data recovery.

This order minimizes the rollback scope. Moving straight to a clean installation can solve corruption, but it also discards the most opportunities to preserve applications, settings, and files.

What should I troubleshoot when a rollback fails?

The uninstall option is missing

The update may not support removal, may already have been superseded, or may not be the change that caused the symptom. Check whether the issue began with a feature upgrade instead and try Go back, System Restore, or a point-in-time restore if available.

Go back is unavailable

The documented window is 10 days after a feature upgrade. If that period has passed or Windows no longer has the previous-version files, use a restore point or Reset this PC rather than deleting system folders manually.

  • Store more with capacities up to 8GB (1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.)

No restore point appears

There may be no snapshot within the default retention period, or restore-point creation may not have produced one before the failure. Continue with update removal, Reset this PC, or USB repair according to the severity of the problem.

WinRE requests a BitLocker key

Stop and retrieve the recovery key before proceeding. Recovery operations that need access to the encrypted Windows volume can be blocked until the correct key is supplied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The computer was interrupted during restoration

Do not keep switching it off and on while a restoration is in progress. If an interruption has already occurred and Windows will not start, return to WinRE, try another recovery option, and use installation media if the built-in tools cannot repair the installation.

What should I check after Windows starts again?

Sign in and verify the files that mattered before testing the original failure. Confirm that the affected application opens, the device or driver is detected, and the rollback removed the unwanted update or configuration change. Reconnect external storage only after you know which backup copy is current.

Keep a record of the rollback date, the method used, and any applications or drivers that disappeared. Avoid immediately repeating the same upgrade until you have identified whether the failure was tied to the update itself, a driver, or an application that changed alongside it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I tell whether the problem came from a feature upgrade or a regular update?

Open Settings, go to Windows Update, and review Update history. A feature upgrade represents a move to a new Windows version, while quality or driver entries point to a narrower change and usually make Uninstall updates the better first test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a local restore change files that are stored only in OneDrive?

No. Microsoft states that cloud files such as OneDrive files are not affected by a point-in-time restore. Local files created after the selected restore point are different and can be lost, so make a separate copy before restoring.

What should I do if recovery asks for BitLocker before showing the repair tools?

Find the BitLocker recovery key before continuing. WinRE may require that key to unlock the encrypted Windows volume, and guessing or bypassing the prompt can prevent the recovery operation from accessing the installation.

Can I use a USB drive that already contains files to create recovery media?

Creating a recovery drive erases the USB drive. Copy its contents to another location first, then use an empty drive; Microsoft specifies at least 8 GB for Windows installation media.
