To revoke an AI app’s access, disconnect the app first, then remove its underlying Plaid connection (if it uses Plaid), check your bank’s third-party access controls, and change your bank password if you ever shared it directly. Revocation stops future account retrieval, but it does not automatically erase transaction data the app already copied. Deletion is a separate request to the AI provider and, for Plaid-held information, to Plaid. The exact labels differ by bank, so you may need to look under Security, Privacy, Data sharing, Third-party access, or Connected apps.
What does revoking an AI app’s bank access actually do?
Revocation ends the connection that lets the service retrieve new account information. It does not guarantee that historical balances, transactions, statements, or profile details already delivered to the app have been erased. Stopping access and deleting stored copies are two separate jobs.

There are usually three control points:
| Control point | What you control there | What the action changes | What it cannot guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| The AI app | The app’s own connection to your financial accounts | Stops that app from using the connection; the provider may begin its own deletion process | It does not automatically remove data held by Plaid or another intermediary |
| Plaid Portal | A specific app and institution connected through Plaid | Stops future sharing through that Plaid connection | It does not erase information already held by the app |
| Your bank | Consent-based third-party services shown by the bank | Revokes the bank’s secure connection for the listed service | A credential-sharing service may not appear there |
| Password and security settings | Credentials that may have been given directly to a service | Invalidates the old password and can block further sign-ins using it | It does not delete copies already downloaded |
Disconnecting one service is normally narrower than revoking every service connected through Plaid or changing a password used by several services. Select the smallest scope that solves the problem, then widen it if you find evidence of direct credential sharing or an unknown connection.
How do I disconnect ChatGPT Finances?
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps → Finances and disconnect each Plaid account listed there. OpenAI’s current help guidance says synced account data is deleted from OpenAI systems and data associated with that ChatGPT connection is deleted from Plaid within 30 days after you disconnect it.

- Open the account menu and choose Settings.
- Select Apps, then open Finances.
- Review the connected Plaid accounts and institutions so you know which connection you are removing.
- Choose Disconnect for the account or connection you no longer want ChatGPT to use.
- Complete the confirmation prompt. If more than one account is listed, repeat the action for each account you intend to remove.
This action applies to the ChatGPT Finances connection you disconnect. It does not remove other Plaid authorizations you made for unrelated apps. To control those, use Plaid Portal or your bank’s own controls.
Keep the completion screen or confirmation email if one is provided. The 30-day statement is a deletion window for the disconnected ChatGPT-related data; it is not a promise that every copy held by a separate app, export, screenshot, or backup disappears on the same day.

Plaid Portal lets you see apps and data types connected through Plaid and disconnect a particular app from a financial institution. The procedure is app-specific, so it is useful when you want to leave other Plaid connections in place.
- Sign in to Plaid Portal using the identity associated with your Plaid connections.
- Open Overview to view connected apps.
- Select the AI app you want to block.
- Choose Manage connections.
- Select Disconnect app.
- Choose the financial institution whose data connection should end.
- Confirm the disconnection and save any confirmation reference or screen.
Plaid describes this as a way to stop an app from accessing your financial data at any time. It stops future sharing through that connection; it does not modify or delete data already collected by the third-party app. If you want Plaid-held information removed as well, submit a separate privacy request to Plaid.
Review the data types shown before confirming. An app may have been authorized for checking, savings, credit-card, loan, or investment information separately. Disconnect only the institution and app combination you intend to remove, then return to the overview to check for another connection under the same app.
How do I revoke access in my bank’s dashboard?
Your bank may provide a second, bank-side control for secure data-sharing connections. The label and location vary: look under Security, Privacy, Data sharing, Third-party access, Connected apps, or a similar area.

Bank of America
Bank of America provides a third-party-services area with controls to revoke permission. Its guidance says you can revoke permission for a service to access account information at any time. Sign in through the bank’s official site or app, locate the third-party-services or data-sharing controls, select the service, and confirm revocation.
U.S. Bank
U.S. Bank calls its relevant area My Controls. Open that area, locate the third-party connection, review the institution or accounts covered, and confirm the removal. U.S. Bank says that after revocation, the third party no longer has ongoing access through the secure connection.
Other banks
Search your bank’s help center for “third-party access,” “data sharing,” or “connected apps” if the menu is not obvious. Some dashboards group several account types together; others show one consent at a time. Take a screenshot before and after removal so you can document which service and date were involved.
A bank dashboard generally shows secure, consent-based connections. It may not list a service that received your username and password directly, which is why a missing entry is not proof that no access exists.
What should I do if I gave the AI app my bank username and password?
Change the bank password immediately through the bank’s official website or app, then review security settings and recent activity. Bank of America specifically identifies a password change as the safest way to block a service that received credentials directly.
- Open the bank’s official app or type its address yourself rather than following a message link.
- Go to the password or sign-in security settings.
- Create a unique password that you do not use for any other financial service.
- Sign out other sessions if the bank offers that option.
- Re-enroll or verify multifactor authentication when prompted.
- Check whether the bank offers a separate “revoke all sessions,” “authorized devices,” or “third-party access” control and use it where appropriate.
Changing a password can affect legitimate budgeting tools or other services that relied on the old credentials, so expect to reconnect only services you deliberately trust. If the app had your username, password, security answers, or one-time-code access, contact the bank’s fraud or security team and explain exactly what was shared.

Do not send the new password to the AI provider, Plaid, or anyone claiming to help. A legitimate support process should not require your full banking credentials.
How do I request deletion of data the app already collected?
Send a deletion request to the AI app separately from disconnecting the account. State which account or connection was involved, the email address or user ID on the service, the date you disconnected it, and that you want financial data and derived copies deleted where applicable.
Recommended Free Tools
For data held by Plaid, use Plaid’s Privacy Request Form. Plaid says it cannot modify or delete data held by the third-party app, so a Plaid request does not replace the request you send to the AI provider. Keep both confirmation messages and note any stated completion date.
What to include in a deletion request
- The account email or identifier used with the AI service.
- The name of the connected institution, without sending passwords or full account numbers.
- The date and approximate time you disconnected access.
- A direct request to delete imported transactions, balances, account metadata, and connection records associated with the integration.
- A request to identify any information the provider must retain and the reason and retention period.
Deletion policies can differ between the app, Plaid, and the bank. A provider may need to retain limited records for legal, security, or accounting reasons; ask it to distinguish retained compliance records from active financial data used by the app.
How can I verify that access is really gone?
Verify each control point independently rather than assuming one disconnect removed everything.
- Return to the AI app’s finance or integrations page and confirm the account is no longer listed.
- Open Plaid Portal’s overview and check that the app and relevant institution no longer show an active connection.
- Check the bank’s third-party-services or data-sharing page for the same service.
- Review recent bank transactions, sign-in history, authorized devices, and security alerts for activity you do not recognize.
- Confirm that bank alerts and multifactor authentication remain enabled where offered.
- Save dates, screenshots, support tickets, and confirmation numbers in a secure location.
Do not test the connection by entering your bank password into the AI app again. If the app still displays newly updated transactions after disconnection, capture the evidence, contact the app’s support team, and ask the bank whether another consent or credential-based connection remains.

What is the difference between tokenized sharing and direct credential sharing?
A secure, consent-based connection typically uses an authorization flow in which the bank or an aggregator issues access for specified data. A direct credential connection involves giving the service a username and password. The control and recovery steps differ.
| Characteristic | Tokenized or consent-based connection | Direct credential sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Where it may appear | AI app settings, Plaid Portal, and often the bank’s third-party access page | Possibly only in the app’s records; the bank may not list it as a consent |
| Primary revocation | Disconnect in the app, Plaid Portal, or bank dashboard | Change the bank password and terminate sessions; then remove the app connection |
| Effect on future retrieval | Ends sharing through the selected authorization | Invalidates the old credentials, subject to any remaining sessions or credentials |
| Deletion of old copies | Requires separate app and intermediary requests | Also requires separate deletion requests |
If you are unsure which model was used, inspect the consent screen, the app’s integration settings, and your bank’s connected-services list. The presence of Plaid branding usually indicates an intermediary connection, but the absence of a bank entry should prompt a password change if you ever typed credentials into the service.
What should I do when the app or connection is missing?
The app is not in ChatGPT Finances
Check whether you are signed in to the same ChatGPT account that authorized the connection. If the account is still absent, look in Plaid Portal and your bank’s third-party access area; the connection may have been authorized outside ChatGPT or under another account.
The app is not in Plaid Portal
It may use another financial-data provider, a direct bank login, or an authorization that has already expired. Review the app’s privacy and integrations settings, search your email for the original consent notice, and change your bank password if credentials were shared.
The bank shows no third-party service
That can be normal for credential-based access because the bank dashboard may display only secure consent-based connections. Treat the missing listing as a reason to investigate the connection type, not as confirmation that access ended.
The app continues to show old transactions
Old data can remain visible after access is revoked because disconnection stops future retrieval rather than automatically deleting historical copies. Send the app a written deletion request and ask whether the display is a cached record, an export, or a live connection.
Best Value
Should I revoke every financial connection or only the AI app?
Start with the specific app and institution unless you suspect broader compromise. Plaid Portal’s app-level controls let you leave unrelated services connected, while a bank-password change can affect every service that used that password.
- Use a narrow revocation when one AI app is unwanted and the connection was consent-based.
- Revoke several connections when you find unfamiliar apps, duplicate authorizations, or an account you no longer use.
- Change the bank password and contact the bank when credentials, security answers, or one-time codes were shared or exposed.
After a broad reset, reconnect only services you recognize, using the bank’s authorization flow rather than typing credentials into an intermediary whenever the bank offers a secure alternative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat should I monitor after revocation?
Keep transaction alerts, login notifications, and multifactor authentication enabled. For the next several statement cycles, review transfers, payments, profile changes, and new devices; compare them with your own activity rather than relying only on an app’s dashboard.
If you see an unrecognized transaction or sign-in, contact the bank through its published fraud channel immediately. Provide the dates of your disconnection, password change, and any support case numbers. Continue to respond to deletion requests until the provider confirms what was removed and what, if anything, must be retained.
Quick revocation checklist
- Disconnect the AI app’s finance integration.
- Use Plaid Portal to disconnect the app and institution if Plaid handled the connection.
- Check the bank’s third-party access or data-sharing controls.
- Change the bank password if it was ever shared directly.
- End old sessions and verify multifactor authentication.
- Request deletion from the AI provider.
- Submit Plaid’s privacy request for Plaid-held data when applicable.
- Confirm the app, Plaid, and bank lists no longer show active access.
- Review transactions, sign-ins, devices, and alerts.
- Keep confirmation records and monitor for follow-up activity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I revoke access without closing my bank account?
Yes. Revocation works at the connection or credential level, so closing the account is not required. Leave the account open while you verify that the app, intermediary, and bank no longer show active access.
How do I know whether an AI app used Plaid?
Look for Plaid on the authorization screen, connection confirmation email, or the app’s integration details. You can also sign in to Plaid Portal and check whether the app appears under your connected services.
What information should I avoid sending to support?
Do not include your password, one-time verification code, full debit-card number, or complete account number. Use the provider’s account identifier and redact screenshots so only the connection name and relevant dates are visible.
Can a deletion request remove data from a bank statement?
No. A bank’s official transaction records are separate from copies imported into an app or held by an intermediary. Ask the app and intermediary to delete their copies while retaining your bank records for your own accounting and dispute needs.
