There is no universal kill switch for an AI agent. To cut off access, revoke each provider’s OAuth authorization or token, delete or rotate exposed API keys and secrets, remove the agent’s cloud permissions, and then check usage and audit records for activity that happened before revocation. Removing an agent from its own interface is not enough if it may have copied credentials.
What does revoking an AI agent’s access actually involve?
It means disabling every credential and permission the agent could use to reach an account or service. Depending on how it was connected, that may include an OAuth grant, access or refresh token, API key, client secret, service-account key, IAM role, or a permission delegated through a group or another resource.

These controls are separate. Revoking an OAuth grant can invalidate tokens issued under that grant, but it does not necessarily delete an unrelated API key or remove cloud permissions. Similarly, removing a principal from an IAM policy does not rotate a secret the agent could already have copied. Treat each credential and permission as its own access path.
The goal is twofold: stop future access and determine whether the credentials were used unexpectedly before you revoked them. A revocation does not erase a copy already seen by the agent, and a replacement credential does not undo activity that already occurred.

What should I do first if I think an agent or its credentials are compromised?
Start by identifying what the agent could reach, then disable the relevant access at the provider that issued it. Preserve evidence as you work, and plan for connected automations to fail until they are updated with replacement credentials.
- Contain the access. Revoke the relevant app authorization, token, key, or permission at the provider. If you cannot establish exactly which credential was exposed, include every credential the agent could access in your review.
- Record what you know. Note the time you discovered the issue and the time of each revocation. Preserve token identifiers, suspicious requests, relevant security-history or audit-log entries, and support case details.
- Rotate copied secrets. Create replacement keys or secrets and update the systems that use them. Deleting an agent connection does not invalidate a credential that was copied into an environment variable, configuration file, or secret store.
- Check for prior use. Review provider security history, audit logs, API requests, and billing or spend for activity outside the agent’s expected behavior.
- Restore only what is needed. Once access is contained and the appropriate dependencies are updated, grant replacement access with only the required permissions.
If you suspect account compromise, preserve relevant details before they disappear from the views you are using, and contact the provider’s support team when appropriate. Do not assume that a successfully revoked credential proves it was never misused.

Trace the agent’s connections from its configuration out to the accounts and services it can reach. Check both the agent’s setup and the provider-side records; either view alone may miss credentials that were copied, shared, or added outside the agent interface.
- Agent configuration: list connected tools, accounts, and integrations. Check environment variables and the agent’s configuration for credential names and destinations.
- Secrets and deployment systems: identify secret stores, CI/CD jobs, serverless functions, scripts, and other services that may hold or consume the same credentials.
- Provider authorizations: review OAuth and app authorizations, issued tokens, API keys, and client secrets associated with the connected account or project.
- Cloud access: identify service accounts and delegated roles, then check permissions at project, folder, organization, group, and individual resource levels.
- Shared or delegated access: determine whether a credential or permission is used by another person, integration, or automation before removing it. Removing a shared credential may interrupt unrelated work.
Build a simple inventory before making broad changes: record the provider, credential or principal, where it is used, which jobs depend on it, and whether you have a replacement ready. This makes it easier to distinguish an agent-only credential from one shared with a production workflow.

What should I revoke or rotate at each provider?
Use the provider that issued each credential; disabling one connection does not revoke credentials issued elsewhere. The table summarizes the provider-specific behavior documented by OpenAI, GitHub, Google, and Apple.
| Provider | What to disable or rotate | What revocation does | What to check or repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI API | Delete the affected API key in the API-key dashboard. | An exposed key can permit unauthorized API usage through the account. | Review API usage, retain details of unexpected activity, and contact OpenAI Support if compromise is suspected. Update any application that used the deleted key. |
| GitHub | Revoke the GitHub App or OAuth-app authorization, or revoke the affected supported token through GitHub’s credential controls. | Revoking an app authorization revokes associated tokens. Revoked or expired tokens cannot be restored. GitHub’s credential-revocation API supports classic and fine-grained personal access tokens, OAuth-app tokens, GitHub-App user-to-server tokens, and refresh tokens. | Create replacement credentials where needed and update dependent workflows. Bulk controls can revoke SSO authorizations or delete all keys and tokens; GitHub warns these actions are irreversible and they can stop CI/CD and other automations. |
| Google OAuth | Revoke the token in account settings or use Google’s OAuth revocation endpoint. | Google says revocation removes all OAuth 2.0 scopes granted to the project and invalidates issued access and refresh tokens. | Reconnect only the integrations that still need access, and confirm they request the appropriate scopes. |
| Google Cloud IAM | Remove the principal from applicable project, folder, organization, group, and resource allow policies. Rotate service-account keys, OAuth client secrets, and API keys the agent could access. | Removing IAM access and rotating secrets are separate actions. Removing the permission alone does not change a copied key or secret. | Deploy replacement credentials to dependent systems before deleting old credentials, then check the relevant logs and usage. |
| App Store Connect | Revoke unused, lost, or compromised private keys. | Apple says a revoked key cannot be reinstated and remains visible under Revoked for 30 days. | Replace a key only where an active integration still depends on it, and update that integration to use the replacement. |
How do I revoke an OpenAI API key?
Delete the affected key in the API-key dashboard. OpenAI’s Help Center warns that “An exposed API key can allow unauthorized API usage through your account.” After deletion, review API usage and retain details of activity you do not recognize; contact OpenAI Support if you suspect compromise.

How do I revoke GitHub access without breaking everything?
Revoke the relevant GitHub App or OAuth-app authorization when that is how the agent was connected; GitHub says this revokes associated tokens. For a specific credential, GitHub’s credential-revocation API covers the token types listed in the table. Replacement credentials are new credentials: revoked or expired tokens cannot be restored.

Be especially cautious with bulk account controls. GitHub can revoke SSO authorizations or delete all keys and tokens, but those actions are irreversible and may stop CI/CD and other automations. Before using them, identify dependent jobs and have a replacement-and-deployment plan for anything that must continue running.
For the credential-revocation API, GitHub documents a maximum of 1,000 credentials per request and 60 unauthenticated requests per hour. Those limits describe the API; they are not a substitute for checking which credential types and authorizations need attention in your account.

How do I revoke Google OAuth and Google Cloud access?
For Google OAuth, revoke the token from account settings or use Google’s revocation endpoint. Google states that this removes all OAuth 2.0 scopes granted to the project and invalidates issued access and refresh tokens. Check connected workflows afterward: a workflow that still requires Google access will need an authorized connection.
For Google Cloud, also remove the agent’s principal from applicable allow policies. Check at more than one level—project, folder, organization, group, and resource—because permissions may be granted through different policies. Separately rotate every service-account key, OAuth client secret, or API key the agent could access. Where a working service depends on one of those credentials, deploy the replacement before deleting the old one.

What should I do with an App Store Connect private key?
Apple advises revoking a private key immediately if it is unused, lost, or compromised. A revoked key cannot be reinstated, and Apple says it remains visible under Revoked for 30 days. If an active integration still needs access, make and deploy a replacement rather than expecting to reactivate the revoked key.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I replace credentials without leaving automations broken?
Revocation can cause jobs and integrations to fail, particularly when they share a credential with the agent. Treat replacement and deployment as part of containment, not as optional cleanup.
- Identify dependents: search the inventory for every CI/CD job, serverless function, script, service, and agent configuration that uses the affected credential.
- Create a replacement: issue a new credential with only the access the dependent service needs. Where possible, keep credentials separate by project or feature rather than reusing one key everywhere.
- Update each consumer: place the new value in its environment variable or secret store and update the relevant configuration. Do not assume that changing the agent’s settings changes credentials held by other systems.
- Deploy and test: roll out the updated configuration and verify that required jobs can authenticate and complete their expected work.
- Finish removing the old path: delete or rotate the exposed credential, remove obsolete permissions, and check for failed jobs or unexpected usage after the change.
Google Cloud’s guidance specifically calls for deploying replacements before deleting old service-account keys, OAuth client secrets, and API keys. That order can preserve legitimate service access, but it is not a reason to leave a suspected-compromised credential active longer than necessary. Balance operational continuity against exposure, and prioritize containment when compromise is suspected.
How can I verify that revocation worked?
Check both the control plane and evidence of use. A disabled connection in the agent interface is not enough to establish that every provider credential is invalid or that no prior activity occurred.
Best Value
- Confirm the authorization, token, key, or permission is revoked or removed in the provider that issued or controls it.
- For OAuth, check the provider’s stated effect on associated access and refresh tokens; for API keys and secrets, confirm the old credential has been deleted or rotated.
- Review security history, audit logs, API requests, and billing or spend for activity outside the agent’s expected behavior.
- Check CI/CD, serverless functions, scripts, and agent configuration for failed authentication after replacements are deployed.
- Preserve timestamps, token identifiers, suspicious requests, and support case details for incident response.
Unexpected activity after a revocation deserves investigation rather than an assumption that the first step failed: it may involve another credential, a separate grant, or activity that took place before access was cut off. Revisit the inventory and examine the relevant provider records.
How do I reduce the chance of another exposed credential?
Use narrower and more separable access so one integration’s credential does not become a general-purpose route into multiple projects or workflows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use separate keys by project or feature instead of sharing one key across unrelated integrations.
- Keep credentials in environment variables or managed secret stores rather than embedding them in agent instructions or scripts.
- Reduce OAuth scopes and cloud permissions to what the agent actually needs.
- Set spend thresholds or alerts where the provider supports them, and periodically rotate keys.
- Enable MFA or stronger account protection for the accounts used to manage integrations.
A hardware security key or password manager may help protect account sign-in and credential handling, but neither revokes an existing OAuth grant, token, API key, or cloud permission. Existing access still has to be disabled at the provider that controls it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent keep using an API key after I remove it from the agent’s settings?
Yes, if the key was copied somewhere else and remains valid. Removing a value from one configuration does not disable the credential itself; check and revoke it with the service that issued it.
Should I delete all my keys if I am unsure which one the agent saw?
First identify credentials the agent could access and which other systems depend on them. If the scope of exposure remains unclear, prioritize containing those credentials, while accounting for the disruption that broad or bulk revocation can cause.
What evidence should I save if I suspect an agent misused my account?
Keep the relevant timestamps, token identifiers, suspicious requests, and support case details. These records can help you describe the sequence of events when you review provider activity or contact support.
