Review Salesforce AI access before enabling Claude as if you were approving a new, user-facing integration: verify beta eligibility and licensing, map every pilot user’s Salesforce permissions, test retrieval with ordinary and restricted accounts, keep write approvals on, and configure evidence collection in Data 360. Claude’s Salesforce integration is a paid-plan beta for approved organizations, and the documented path requires the latest Sales Cloud Enterprise edition.

The key boundary is per-user access. Each person authenticates with their own Salesforce account, and Claude can retrieve only records and fields that Salesforce would allow that user to see through sharing rules, object permissions, and field-level security. That boundary still needs proof: a connector can be permission-aware while your permission model remains too broad, your users approve risky changes, or your audit reports are not enabled.

What must be true before you connect Claude to Salesforce?

Start with eligibility and scope, not with the connector. Salesforce describes this integration as a beta available to approved organizations on a paid Claude plan; the documented beta path requires the latest Sales Cloud Enterprise edition. Do not assume that every Salesforce edition, Claude workspace, or region is eligible.

Check What to verify Why it matters
Salesforce approval Your organization has been approved for the beta program. Unapproved organizations may not be able to use the documented integration path.
Salesforce edition The org is on the latest Sales Cloud Enterprise edition required by the beta documentation. Edition affects feature availability and administrative controls.
Claude plan The workspace uses a paid organization plan. The integration is not documented as a general free-workspace feature.
Pilot population Claude group distribution matches the people you intend to test. Group membership defines who can access the pilot before wider rollout.
Administrative ownership A Salesforce administrator, Claude workspace administrator, and security or compliance owner are assigned. Access, approvals, and audit findings need accountable owners.

Record the approval date, edition, workspace, pilot group, and named owners. This creates a baseline for later changes and prevents a trial group from silently becoming a production deployment.

How does Claude access Salesforce data?

Claude does not receive a universal Salesforce identity. Each user signs in with their own Salesforce account, and retrieval is evaluated using that user’s existing access. Salesforce and Anthropic describe the result plainly: Claude sees only what the authenticated user is already allowed to see.

Permissions that define the boundary

  • Object permissions: whether the user can read the relevant object, such as Account or Opportunity.
  • Record sharing: role hierarchy, sharing rules, teams, territories, and other mechanisms that determine which records are visible.
  • Field-level security: whether a visible record’s individual fields can be read.
  • Profile and permission-set grants: direct and inherited privileges that can widen access.

The connector retrieves context at runtime. It does not create a separate, all-powerful service account that bypasses the executing user’s permissions. That is a strong design boundary, but it is not a substitute for reviewing your permission model: a user with broad “View All” access can still expose a broad set of records to an AI workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Salesforce permissions should you inventory first?

Export or document the effective access for every pilot user before connection. Review effective permissions rather than only a person’s job title, because profile and permission-set combinations can produce access that is not obvious from a role name.

Build a pilot access register

  • List each pilot user, Salesforce profile, permission sets, role, department, and manager.
  • Record object-level read access for Accounts, Contacts, Leads, Opportunities, Cases, Activities, and any custom objects used by the pilot workflows.
  • Map role hierarchy and sharing rules that grant access outside a user’s immediate team.
  • Export field-level security for commercially sensitive fields, including forecast data, discount levels, margins, compensation, personal data, and internal notes.
  • Flag broad privileges such as “View All,” “Modify All,” administrative permissions, and integration-related access.
  • Identify fields that should never be included in prompts, summaries, or generated drafts even when a user technically can read them.

Create a before-and-after snapshot. If access is changed during the pilot, you can then determine whether a new result came from Claude’s behavior or from a Salesforce permission change.

Look for permission combinations, not isolated grants

A user may have read access to an Opportunity but not its forecast category, or access to an Account but not a related custom object. Test the combination that a real prompt will traverse. A permission review that checks only the top-level object can miss a sensitive field exposed through a related record or a custom relationship.

How should you test data retrieval with representative users?

Use at least three personas: an ordinary seller, a manager, and a user whose access to restricted data is intentionally limited. Ask each person to perform the same retrieval tasks and compare Claude’s output with what that person can see in the Salesforce interface.

  1. Choose controlled records. Select one Account, one Opportunity, and at least one record containing a sensitive field. Document the expected visibility for each persona before testing.
  2. Run neutral retrieval prompts. Ask for an account summary, opportunity status, recent activity, and the value of the sensitive field. Keep the wording identical across users so differences are attributable to permissions.
  3. Compare against Salesforce. Sign in as each test user and inspect the same records in Salesforce. Check both whether the record appears and whether each field is visible.
  4. Test negative cases. Ask for a record and field the restricted user should not see. The expected result is that Claude cannot retrieve it, not that it summarizes a hidden value.
  5. Capture evidence. Save the user identity, prompt, record identifiers, returned fields, Salesforce screen result, date, and tester’s conclusion.
  6. Repeat after permission changes. If you remove a field or sharing grant, run the same prompts again and verify that the result changes as expected.

This is a control test derived from Salesforce’s permission-based, runtime retrieval model. It is more meaningful than testing only with an administrator, because an administrator may have access that ordinary users should not have.

How do you configure the connector without widening access?

Administrative setup includes access to AgentExchange, distribution of Claude to the intended Claude group, and a Salesforce MCP connector configured with an External Client App consumer key and secret.

  1. Restrict the Claude group. Add only approved pilot users and confirm the group does not inherit a broader organization-wide distribution list.
  2. Open the Salesforce integration path through AgentExchange. Use the organization’s approved administrative process and record who enabled the connector.
  3. Create or select the External Client App. Generate the consumer key and secret required by the MCP connector. Treat the secret as a credential: store it in the approved secret-management process, limit who can retrieve it, and rotate it according to your internal policy.
  4. Complete user authentication. Each pilot user should authenticate with their own Salesforce account. Do not substitute a shared administrator account to simplify setup.
  5. Confirm the effective scope. After connection, run the representative-user tests before allowing production data workflows.

The connector’s consumer key and secret establish the application connection; they should not be confused with permission to read every Salesforce record. Data access is still evaluated for the user executing the request.

How should Salesforce changes be approved?

Keep proposed-write review enabled during the pilot. When Claude proposes a Salesforce update, the user should see the proposed field-level changes and choose Allow once, Always allow, or Deny.

Use the choices deliberately

  • Allow once: use for unfamiliar actions, high-impact records, or any change that needs one-time confirmation.
  • Always allow: reserve for narrowly defined, low-risk repetitive updates after the workflow has been tested and the approver understands its scope.
  • Deny: use when the proposal is inaccurate, unnecessary, or outside the user’s authority. Record repeated denials as a signal that the workflow or prompt needs redesign.

Add a second-person rule for consequential fields

Require a second reviewer for opportunity stage, close date, forecast category, account ownership, and other fields that affect forecasting, compensation, territory credit, or customer commitments. Salesforce’s documented product control is the user approval prompt; the second-person review is a governance safeguard your organization adds around it.

Define what the reviewer checks: record identity, old value, proposed value, source information, effective date, and business justification. Never approve a bulk pattern merely because an individual change looks plausible.

What does the Salesforce Trust Layer protect?

Salesforce documents several controls relevant to Claude workflows: secure permission-based grounding, zero-data-retention commitments with external model providers, masking for supported features, toxicity scoring, and audit logging.

Secure grounding

Secure data retrieval means the prompt is grounded only with data the executing user can access. This is the control that links a generated answer to Salesforce permissions rather than to a shared application-wide data pool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Zero-data-retention commitments

Salesforce documents zero-data-retention commitments with external large-language-model providers. Treat that as a provider and contract control, not as a promise that no Salesforce-side record of activity exists: Salesforce separately documents audit data stored in Data 360.

Masking is not universal

Data masking can be configured for supported embedded generative-AI features, but Salesforce documents masking as disabled for Agentforce agents. Classify the exact workflow you are enabling; do not assume a masking setting applies identically to every Salesforce AI path.

Toxicity scoring and logging

Toxicity scoring and trust signals can support monitoring for unsafe or inappropriate outputs. They do not validate business accuracy, permission design, or whether a proposed pipeline change is commercially correct, so keep those checks in your review process.

How do you audit Salesforce AI usage?

Enable Einstein generative-AI data collection and storage, install the audit report package, and confirm that Data 360 reports expose the evidence your governance process requires. Salesforce states that prompts, responses, and trust signals are logged and stored in Data 360.

  1. Enable collection. Turn on Einstein generative-AI data collection in the Salesforce administration settings used by your organization.
  2. Enable storage. Confirm that collected data is retained in Data 360 rather than only displayed transiently.
  3. Install the audit report package. Verify that the package is present in the correct org and that the responsible administrators can run its reports.
  4. Validate a real event. Have a pilot user perform a retrieval and, separately, review a proposed write. Confirm that the corresponding prompt, response, and trust information appear in the reporting experience.
  5. Assign reviewers. Name the people who investigate anomalous usage, repeated denials, sensitive-field access, unusual request volume, and unexpected write proposals.
  6. Set a review cadence. Daily review may be appropriate during a short pilot; a mature deployment can use a scheduled control review with escalation for high-risk events.

Do not declare auditing complete merely because a report opens. Test the full path from user action to stored evidence, check access to the reports themselves, and document retention and deletion requirements under your organization’s policies.

Which workflows should you pilot first?

Begin with workflows that have a clear expected result and a human owner: account research, call preparation, pipeline review, quarterly business review drafting, meeting follow-up, and CRM updates. Salesforce and Anthropic report 37 sales skills in their 2026 documentation, but a published skill count does not replace testing the particular workflow, object model, and fields in your org.

Use a workflow scorecard

Measure What to record Decision signal
Retrieval accuracy Whether the answer matches the visible Salesforce records and fields. Repeated factual errors require prompt, data, or workflow changes.
Permission fidelity Records and fields returned for each test persona. Any unauthorized result is a stop-and-investigate event.
Write quality Proposed object, field, old value, new value, and supporting context. Frequent incorrect proposals indicate the workflow is not ready for automation.
Approval behavior Allow-once, always-allow, and deny decisions. High denial rates may signal poor prompts or unclear ownership.
Audit completeness Presence of prompts, responses, trust signals, and reviewer identity. Missing evidence blocks a governed rollout.
User feedback Time saved, confusing outputs, missing fields, and risky suggestions. Use feedback to refine the workflow before expanding the group.

Keep test records separate from irreversible customer or forecast changes where possible. For write tests, use a controlled sandbox or clearly marked pilot records and verify that rollback procedures work before touching production data.

What is the difference between Claude in Salesforce and Salesforce-native AI?

Compare the products on governance mechanics, not on model branding. Salesforce states that its Agentforce experiences respect licenses, permissions, field-level security, and sharing settings, while masking behavior differs for agents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Evaluation axis Questions to ask about Claude in Salesforce Questions to ask about Salesforce-native Einstein or Agentforce
Identity and permissions Does each request run as the signed-in Salesforce user, and were representative users tested? How are licenses, profiles, permission sets, sharing, and field-level security enforced?
Connector and deployment Is AgentExchange access approved, and is the External Client App credential governed? Which native features, org settings, and environments are required?
Write approval Are proposed field-level changes shown with Allow once, Always allow, and Deny? What confirmation, approval, or action-logging controls exist for the selected agent?
Masking Which supported embedded features can mask data, and does the selected path use them? Does the selected native agent support masking, or is masking disabled for that agent type?
Provider data terms What zero-data-retention commitments apply to external model providers? What provider and Salesforce contractual terms apply to the native service?
Audit location Are prompts, responses, and trust signals available in Data 360 after collection and storage are enabled? Which native audit objects, reports, or Data 360 records provide equivalent evidence?
Licensing and edition Is the organization approved for the paid-plan beta and on the required Sales Cloud edition? Which Einstein or Agentforce licenses and Salesforce editions are required?

Run the same permission and write-control tests for both options if you are deciding between them. A feature that is easier to deploy can still be the weaker choice if its audit evidence or approval behavior does not meet your control requirements.

What problems should stop the pilot, and how do you fix them?

Symptom Likely cause Action
A user cannot access the integration The organization, Claude plan, Salesforce edition, or group distribution is outside the approved beta scope. Recheck approval, edition, paid-plan status, and group membership before changing permissions.
Claude returns a record the test user should not see Sharing, object permissions, field-level security, or a broad “View All” grant is wider than expected. Stop the test, preserve the prompt and response, inspect effective access in Salesforce, and correct the permission model.
A visible record is missing sensitive fields Field-level security or the user’s profile and permission sets exclude those fields. Confirm the Salesforce UI result; do not grant access merely to make the answer look complete.
Users approve changes without reading them The approval choices are unfamiliar or the workflow encourages routine confirmation. Retrain users, keep Allow once for the pilot, and add second-person review for high-impact fields.
Audit reports are empty Einstein generative-AI collection, storage, or the audit report package is not enabled or is installed in the wrong org. Enable each component, generate a fresh test event, and verify report permissions and Data 360 visibility.
Teams assume masking protects every workflow Masking is configured only for supported embedded generative-AI features and is disabled for Agentforce agents. Classify the exact AI path and apply a stricter data policy where masking is unavailable.

What should be documented before expanding beyond the pilot?

Create a decision record that an administrator or auditor can read without opening Claude. Include the approved Salesforce edition and beta status, Claude group membership, connector owner, External Client App credential owner, permission-inventory snapshot, representative-user test results, write-approval policy, second-person review rule, Trust Layer settings, Data 360 collection and storage status, audit-package installation, reviewer assignments, and unresolved exceptions.

For each workflow, state the allowed objects and fields, prohibited data, expected human decision, rollback method, and escalation contact. Tie every exception to an owner and a review date. If you cannot explain what data a user can retrieve, what changes they can approve, and where the evidence is stored, the workflow is not ready for a broader audience.

Should you enable Claude now?

Enable it only when eligibility is confirmed, effective permissions have been inventoried, representative users pass negative-access tests, proposed writes remain reviewable, and Data 360 evidence has been demonstrated end to end. Treat the first rollout as a controlled pilot rather than a blanket authorization: limit the group, start with reversible workflows, monitor denials and sensitive-field requests, and expand only after the recorded results meet your security and business-accuracy criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Salesforce permission changes require reconnecting Claude?

The documented retrieval model evaluates access for the user executing each request, so a permission review should focus on the user’s current Salesforce session rather than on a shared connector identity. After changing a profile, permission set, sharing rule, or field-level setting, rerun the same retrieval and negative-access tests to confirm the new boundary.

Is data masking applied to every Salesforce AI experience?

No. Salesforce describes masking as configurable for supported embedded generative-AI features and says it is disabled for Agentforce agents. Classify the exact feature and data type before deciding that masking satisfies your policy.

Can Data 360 reports prove that a user saw a particular Salesforce field?

They can provide prompts, responses, and trust signals after collection and storage are enabled, but a report should not automatically be treated as field-level proof of every value displayed. For sensitive investigations, correlate the AI record with Salesforce permissions, the user’s test evidence, and any relevant application logs.

What should happen when a pilot user leaves the project?

Remove the person from the Claude pilot group and follow your normal Salesforce account-deactivation process. Preserve the user’s approved test evidence and audit records according to your retention policy, then rerun access checks for the replacement user instead of inheriting the former user’s assumptions.
