Review a large AI-generated change as untrusted code until it has been checked against the task, the repository’s conventions, its tests, dependency policy, and security boundaries. Start by defining what should change, inventory every file that did change, and then run independent checks before tracing behavior and deciding whether the remaining risk is acceptable. A green test suite is useful evidence, not proof that the implementation is correct or safe.
Why does a large AI-generated change need a different review process?
The essential review responsibilities are the same as for any code: determine whether the change solves the problem, preserves required behavior, and is safe to merge. The practical risk is that a large generated patch can look coherent while containing unrelated edits, weakened tests, unexpected dependencies, or changes to files that execute during builds and deployment. A polished explanation or a passing test run does not resolve those questions.

OpenAI’s 2025 guidance, “A Practical Approach to Verifying Code at Scale,” argues that code-generating systems should not be assumed trustworthy or correct. OWASP’s secure-coding guidance likewise emphasizes reviewing each agent-generated file rather than approving from a pull request description. The person approving and merging the patch remains accountable for its effects.
Use the agent’s summary as an index to investigate, not as evidence that the described work is complete. Your standard of review should be repository-aware: compare the change with the task, neighboring code, documented contracts, and the independent checks the project already uses.

How should I define the intended scope before opening the diff?
Write down the expected outcome before inspecting the implementation. A short scope statement gives you a reference for identifying omissions and unrelated changes, especially when a patch touches many files.
Record the behavior and boundaries
- User-visible behavior: What should a caller, user, or downstream system be able to do after the change?
- Interfaces and compatibility: Which functions, classes, command-line options, API responses, configuration keys, or data formats may change? Which must remain stable?
- Data flow: What inputs are accepted, what outputs are produced, and where do files, network requests, subprocesses, credentials, or persisted data enter the path?
- Quality constraints: Are there stated performance, reliability, privacy, or error-handling expectations?
- Expected files: Which modules, tests, documentation, or configuration files would reasonably need changes?
Do not assume that the expected-file list is a rigid limit: a legitimate task may require an additional migration or test. Treat unexpected paths as questions that need an answer, not as automatic proof of wrongdoing. The goal is to make scope changes visible and explainable.

Build a complete inventory before reading individual hunks. Include added, modified, deleted, renamed, generated, and hidden files; a summary view is not a substitute for the full change list.
- Check the working tree: Use the repository’s normal Git workflow to confirm the relevant branch and working-tree state. If other work is present, separate it from the proposed change before judging the patch.
- List changed paths and statuses: Inspect the complete name-and-status view, including deletions and renames. Compare every path with the expected-file list you wrote down.
- Review the aggregate diff: Look at the overall size and distribution of changes. A large change concentrated in expected modules may be easier to explain than a similarly sized change spread across unrelated directories; neither pattern settles correctness on its own.
- Inspect every file: Read the diff for each path, not only the files highlighted in the pull request description. For large or generated changes, split the review into coherent file groups, but keep an inventory so no group disappears from view.
- Ask about anomalies: For each unexplained path, determine what requirement it serves and whether it changes runtime, build, test, deployment, or data behavior. Remove or separately justify edits that do not belong.
Pay particular attention to file types that can change behavior outside the obvious Python implementation: lockfiles, pyproject.toml, setup.py, Dockerfiles, Makefiles, CI workflows, deployment scripts, generated files, and tests. OWASP’s guidance identifies out-of-scope edits and automatically executed files as important agent-review failure modes. A seemingly small change in an installation hook or workflow can have a broader effect than a much larger edit to an isolated helper.
What repository context should I read before judging the implementation?
A diff shows what changed, but not necessarily why it is wrong or what it must preserve. Read the repository’s own guidance and enough surrounding code to understand the local contract before evaluating design choices.
- Start with project instructions: Read the README, contributor guidance, and any repository-specific agent or security rules. Note the supported Python versions, test and lint commands, packaging approach, and compatibility requirements the project actually documents.
- Follow neighboring implementations: Compare the changed code with nearby modules that solve similar problems. Check naming, error handling, logging, typing, resource cleanup, and whether the change uses an established abstraction or bypasses it.
- Inspect public surfaces: Look at callers, exported APIs, configuration, fixtures, and tests that define how the changed code is used. A function can pass its own unit tests while breaking a caller’s assumptions.
- Use recent history where relevant: Recent changes can reveal why a constraint exists or whether a proposed replacement reverses an intentional decision. History is context, not a substitute for verifying current requirements.
- Trace the execution path: Identify how the changed code is reached, what it receives, what it invokes, and what happens when an operation fails or receives unusual input.
OpenAI reports that repository access and code execution improve review quality compared with reviewing a diff alone. The practical implication is to evaluate the patch in its actual project context, rather than treating generated code as a self-contained answer.

Which automated checks should I run, and in what order?
Run the project’s deterministic checks early, using the commands and environments documented by the repository or CI. Functional checks can quickly expose regressions; formatting, type, static-analysis, and dependency checks add different kinds of evidence and should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Establish the baseline: If practical, note whether the relevant checks already pass on the target branch. This distinguishes failures introduced by the patch from existing failures.
- Run focused tests: Test the changed behavior and directly affected callers first. Use the project’s own test instructions so the right fixtures, services, and settings are loaded.
- Run the broader test suite: Execute the suite required for the change and record failures, skips, and environmental limitations. A targeted pass does not establish that unrelated integration paths remain intact.
- Run formatting and lint checks: Use the configured formatter and linter to find inconsistent or suspicious code. A clean style report does not establish the correctness of the behavior.
- Run type checking where the project uses it: Investigate new or suppressed errors, especially at module boundaries and around optional, untrusted, or nullable values.
- Run static security analysis and dependency scanning: Use the checks already adopted by the project. GitHub’s guidance recommends functional checks and names CodeQL and Dependabot as examples of security and dependency controls.
- Review the results yourself: Identify which checks actually ran, which were skipped, and what they cover. Do not convert an unavailable service, ignored failure, or partial test run into a claim that the patch passed.
Keep checks independent of the code-generating agent where possible. An agent may help interpret an error, but approval should be based on reproducible results from the repository’s established tools and on human inspection of the relevant behavior.
How do I review behavior, edge cases, and compatibility?
Read changed functions as executable behavior, not just as a plausible implementation. Trace representative inputs through to outputs, then inspect how errors and boundary cases travel through the surrounding system.
Trace the contract from caller to result
For each changed entry point, identify the callers and the assumptions they make. Check whether input validation happens at the appropriate boundary, whether return values retain their expected shape, and whether exceptions are caught, transformed, or exposed consistently with neighboring code. Follow side effects such as writes, network calls, subprocess launches, and changes to persistent data.
Check failure paths and edge cases
Look for behavior when inputs are empty, malformed, missing, unusually large, or in an unexpected state. Examine timeouts, partial failures, cleanup, retries, and error reporting where those cases apply. In Python, pay attention to resource handling, broad exception catches, mutable defaults, path handling, and assumptions about types or object attributes when they affect this change.
Test the stated problem, not only the implementation
Ask whether the code addresses the original user-visible problem and whether the tests would fail if the relevant behavior were broken. Tests that simply reproduce the generated implementation’s assumptions can confirm that it behaves as written without establishing that it behaves as required. Compare the implementation with documented contracts and independent examples of expected behavior.

Consider backward compatibility explicitly
Check whether callers, stored data, serialized formats, configuration, and supported environments still work. If the change intentionally breaks compatibility, look for a corresponding migration or versioning plan rather than inferring that the break is acceptable from the code alone.
How should I review tests changed by the AI?
Treat test changes as part of the implementation, because tests can be weakened while the production code appears to improve. Compare changed tests with their prior intent and with the behavior they claim to protect.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Look for deleted tests or cases that have been skipped, marked expected-failure, or narrowed without a clear reason.
- Inspect changed assertions for reduced precision: an exact value might become a truthiness check, a specific exception might become any exception, or a meaningful output check might disappear.
- Check whether mocks replace the system under test so thoroughly that the test no longer exercises the changed behavior.
- Ask whether new tests include meaningful failure cases and boundary conditions, rather than only asserting the expected result for the generated code’s preferred input.
- Confirm that fixtures and test setup remain representative; changed setup can silently remove the condition that exposed a regression.
OWASP and GitHub guidance both support treating test integrity as a review concern. A passing suite is only as informative as the independence and coverage of its tests; scrutinize what the tests prove, not just the final status indicator.
What Python dependency and packaging risks should I check?
Review every package and packaging change as a supply-chain decision, not a routine implementation detail. A new dependency should be real, necessary, acceptable under the project’s policy, and introduced in a way that does not unexpectedly alter installation or runtime behavior.
- Verify package identity: Confirm that each name refers to the intended project rather than a typo, nonexistent package, or lookalike. AI-generated code can introduce hallucinated names as well as typosquatting or slopsquatting risks.
- Check necessity and maintenance: Ask whether the task genuinely requires the package and whether its maintenance status and license meet the repository’s standards.
- Inspect version and lock changes: Determine whether an added or upgraded dependency changes more than the requested feature. Review lockfile churn and transitive changes for compatibility implications.
- Read installation and build behavior: Examine packaging configuration and scripts for install hooks, generated code, or unexpected network access. These paths can run in environments beyond a developer’s local test session.
- Check runtime effects: Consider imports, startup behavior, platform constraints, and changes to the project’s supported Python versions or environments.
If a package or version cannot be verified against the project’s normal dependency controls, do not treat the agent’s confident explanation as proof. Resolve the identity and policy questions before approval, or remove the dependency and use an already-supported approach if that satisfies the requirements.
How do I perform a security review of AI-generated Python code?
Follow untrusted data through security-sensitive boundaries and examine the whole path, not just the changed line. Generic linting can catch some classes of mistakes, but authentication, authorization, secret handling, and dangerous operations require contextual threat analysis.

Trace the sensitive paths
- Authentication and authorization: Check who can reach the changed operation, what identity is checked, and whether permission checks apply to every affected object and action.
- Filesystem access: Follow user-controlled paths and filenames through normalization, joins, reads, writes, and deletion. Determine whether the code can escape its intended directory or overwrite unintended data.
- Subprocesses: Inspect how commands and arguments are constructed, whether inputs can affect execution, and what privileges and environment the process receives.
- Network access: Identify destinations, redirects, input-derived URLs, timeouts, and the data sent or returned. Verify that access is consistent with the application’s trust boundaries.
- Deserialization: Check what formats are accepted, whether data is trusted, and whether parsing can trigger unsafe object construction or resource exhaustion.
- Secrets and sensitive data: Look for credentials in logs, exceptions, fixtures, generated files, or new configuration, and check whether data is exposed to a broader audience than intended.
Validate suspected vulnerabilities carefully
For a plausible vulnerability, describe the attacker-controlled input, the affected boundary, the vulnerable operation, and the consequence. Use an isolated reproduction when it is safe and practical; do not test against production systems or real secrets. Require a human to review any proposed security fix, then verify that the fix addresses the exploit path without breaking legitimate behavior.
OWASP’s DevSecOps guidance states that AI-generated code is not exempt from code review, security scanning, or testing. Where a change affects authentication, authorization, cryptography, CI/CD, deployment, or data migration, require a second reviewer with the relevant context before merging.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can repository rules make future reviews more repeatable?
Put durable constraints where contributors and automated checks can consistently find them. Repository guidance such as AGENTS.md can record compatibility requirements, data-handling rules, sensitive paths, and project-specific review expectations; deterministic formatting and checks belong in CI where they can be enforced repeatedly.
Do not assume a written rule will work merely because it exists. Validate it with three cases: a change that should trigger the rule, a safe counterexample that should not trigger it, and an unrelated change. This helps distinguish a useful constraint from wording that is too vague or broad to guide reviews reliably.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Keep the rules specific to the repository. A useful instruction identifies the constraint and where it applies; a useful CI check produces a repeatable result. Neither removes the need for a human to judge whether a large patch fits the task.
How should I decide whether the pull request is safe to merge?
Make approval an explicit risk decision rather than a reward for a green status badge or a persuasive summary. Record the evidence needed to understand what was checked and what remains uncertain.
Best Value
| Review control | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Whether review considered only the diff or also repository guidance, neighboring modules, callers, configuration, and relevant history. |
| Independence | Whether tests and scanners provide evidence separate from the agent’s own explanation or generated checks. |
| Security depth | Whether review used generic linting alone or also traced threats and validated plausible exploit paths. |
| Scope control | Whether every changed path was inventoried and unexplained edits were resolved. |
| Supply-chain visibility | Whether dependency identity, license, lockfile changes, and build or installation behavior were examined. |
| Repeatability | Whether repository rules and checks can be applied consistently in CI and future changes. |
| Human accountability | Whether the right reviewers approved sensitive paths and accepted any remaining risk. |
Before merging, make the record concrete: list the checks run and their outcomes, identify any skipped checks and why, state what uncertainty remains, and name who reviewed security-critical areas. If a material behavior, dependency, scope change, or security concern is unexplained, defer approval until it is resolved or explicitly accepted by the people responsible for the affected system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I let the AI agent review its own pull request?
It can be useful to ask the agent to explain design choices or identify files it believes are relevant, but that is not an independent approval. Have a person verify its claims against the repository and rely on separately run checks for test and scanner results.
What should I do if the test suite fails before I can review the change?
Establish whether the failure also occurs on the target branch using the same environment and command. If you cannot distinguish a pre-existing or environmental failure from a regression, document that uncertainty rather than describing the change as passing.
Can I merge an AI-generated patch in smaller pieces?
If the work can be separated without changing semantics, splitting it into focused pull requests can make scope, tests, and reviewers easier to manage. Avoid splitting tightly coupled changes in a way that leaves intermediate revisions unsafe or impossible to validate.
Who is responsible if AI-written code causes an incident?
The organization’s normal ownership and incident processes apply; using a code generator does not transfer responsibility away from the people and team that approve, deploy, and operate the software. Keep review decisions and relevant approvals traceable under those processes.
