How to Review Exchange Withdrawal Whitelists, API Keys, and Login Sessions

Review an exchange account in this order: withdrawal destinations, API keys, then login sessions and devices. Confirm every saved address and network, remove anything you do not recognize, inspect each key’s permissions and last use, and revoke unknown sessions. Then strengthen authentication and use the exchange’s official freeze or support process if anything looks wrong.

This review matters because an attacker does not need your master password if a powerful API key, a trusted device, or a newly added withdrawal address gives the same practical access. Exchange controls differ: Binance supports a withdrawal whitelist and has documented a 200-address limit in 2025; Coinbase Exchange limits withdrawals to Address Book entries and documents a 48-hour hold after its initial window; Kraken and Crypto.com document 24-hour address-related holds in specific circumstances.

What are withdrawal whitelists, address books, and address locks?

A withdrawal whitelist (also called an allowlist) limits transfers to destinations you have explicitly saved. An address book is the saved list itself; the whitelist setting determines whether withdrawals are blocked unless the destination appears in that list. An address lock is a temporary delay applied after an address is added or after a security event such as a password change.

These controls protect the destination step, not every part of the account. A thief who can edit the address book, approve a new device, or use an API key with address-management permission may still be able to prepare a withdrawal. Review the list, the setting that enforces it, and every permission that can change it.

Exchange Documented destination control Documented timing or limit
Binance When withdrawal whitelist is enabled, withdrawals can go only to whitelisted addresses. Binance also offers a whitelist withdrawal limit for newly added addresses. Binance documented 200 withdrawal addresses in 2025. Disabling the whitelist limit can make a newly added address immediately usable.
Coinbase Exchange Withdrawals are restricted to entries in the Address Book. Current help documentation describes a 48-hour hold after the initial address-book window.
Kraken A new withdrawal address must be added and confirmed before use. Kraken may impose a 24-hour hold after a password change when sign-in 2FA or a Master Key was not in use.
Crypto.com New withdrawal addresses are subject to a temporary lock. Crypto.com documents a 24-hour lock on newly added addresses.

Hold periods are security controls, not guarantees that a transfer will be blocked in every circumstance. They can vary by account state, product, region, authentication method, or a later change to the exchange’s rules. Treat the hold shown in your account as the operative value.

How do I check my exchange withdrawal whitelist?

Open the exchange directly, go to its Security or Address Book area, and verify both the saved destinations and the setting that enforces them. Do not use an address-book link from an unsolicited email, text message, chat, or support message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in from a trusted device. Type the exchange’s known web address or use its official application. Check the domain and certificate before entering credentials.
  2. Open the address controls. Look for a menu labeled Address Book, Withdrawal Addresses, Whitelist, Allowlist, or a similar term. Record the date and time of your review.
  3. Check the enforcement switch. Confirm whether withdrawals are limited to saved addresses. If the exchange offers a separate whitelist withdrawal limit, note whether it is enabled and what delay it imposes on new entries.
  4. Export or record each entry. For every address, capture the asset, network, full destination, label, date added, and any confirmation or lock status. A shortened address display is not enough; expand it before comparing it with your own records.
  5. Compare the network as well as the address. The same-looking destination can exist on different networks. A correct address on the wrong network can strand funds or make recovery impossible.
  6. Remove unknown or obsolete entries. Delete addresses you cannot identify, old vendors, temporary wallets, and duplicates. If deletion triggers a hold or additional confirmation, complete that process and record the resulting status.
  7. Confirm the expected delay before sending. A new address may remain unusable during a 24-hour or 48-hour lock. Do not repeatedly add and remove it; that can restart a timer or create more audit noise.
  8. Make a small test transfer only after the destination is verified. Check asset, network, address, memo or tag requirements, and the final confirmation screen. A test transfer does not replace address verification.

What should you record for each address?

  • Asset and exact network, such as the chain selected in the withdrawal form.
  • Full address, including capitalization where the network treats it as significant.
  • Human-readable label and the person, service, or wallet it represents.
  • Date added, date last edited, confirmation state, and any remaining lock period.
  • Who approved it and why, if the account is shared or used by a business.

How do I handle an address I do not recognize?

Do not send a test transaction to it and do not click a message claiming to verify it. Capture the entry details for your incident record, remove it if the exchange permits, revoke suspicious sessions and API keys, and use the official account-freeze or support route. If a transfer is already pending, contact the exchange through its authenticated help channel immediately; blockchain transfers generally cannot be reversed by the recipient’s exchange after broadcast.

What do Binance, Coinbase Exchange, Kraken, and Crypto.com do differently?

The controls are similar in purpose but different in timing and scope. Use the exchange’s current account page as the final authority, because a documented hold can depend on when you enabled a feature or changed a credential.

Binance

With the withdrawal whitelist enabled, withdrawals can go only to whitelisted addresses. Binance also documents a whitelist withdrawal limit for newly added addresses. Its 2025 documentation lists 200 withdrawal addresses. If the whitelist limit is disabled, a newly added address may become usable immediately, which removes a useful cooling-off period even though the address remains listed.

Binance’s security guidance says to treat API keys as carefully as passwords and to remove unnecessary API access. During a review, check both the whitelist switch and any API permission that could add, edit, or remove destinations.

Coinbase Exchange

Coinbase Exchange restricts withdrawals to Address Book entries. Its current help documentation describes a 48-hour hold after the initial address-book window. If a transfer is unavailable during that period, verify the address and wait for the displayed hold rather than trying to bypass it by creating additional entries.

Kraken

Kraken requires a new address to be added and confirmed. It may impose a 24-hour hold after a password change when sign-in 2FA or a Master Key was not protecting the account. Kraken also exposes an API permission that can add and remove withdrawal addresses, so an API review is essential even when the visible address list looks correct.

Crypto.com

Crypto.com documents a 24-hour lock on newly added withdrawal addresses. Plan legitimate wallet changes around that delay and treat an unexpected new-address lock as a possible sign that someone attempted to alter the destination list.

How can I tell whether an API key can withdraw funds?

Open API Management and inspect every key individually. A key’s name is not evidence of what it can do; the effective permissions, address-management rights, IP restrictions, expiry, and activity history are what matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory every key. Record the key identifier, owner, application or bot, creation date, last-use time, source IP information, expiry date, and current status.
  2. Separate read, trade, and transfer capabilities. A read-only key should not place orders. A trading key should not withdraw. A withdrawal-capable key should exist only when a documented workflow requires it.
  3. Look for address-management permissions. A permission named Add Withdrawal Addresses, Manage Withdrawal Addresses, Edit Address Book, or similar can be more dangerous than its wording suggests because it may alter the destinations before a withdrawal.
  4. Check the direct withdrawal permission. Disable Withdraw Funds or an equivalent permission unless the integration truly needs it. Confirm whether the exchange distinguishes withdrawal permission from address-management permission.
  5. Apply an IP allowlist. Restrict the key to the fixed public addresses used by the application. If the application cannot operate from stable addresses, treat that as a risk decision, not a reason to grant unrestricted access.
  6. Set an expiry. Use the shortest lifetime that fits the job. Record the renewal owner and date so an abandoned integration does not become a permanent credential.
  7. Review activity. Compare last-use times and source locations with the application’s records. A key used after its owner retired the bot, from an unfamiliar IP, or at an unexpected hour deserves immediate revocation.
  8. Revoke before replacing. Create and test a least-privilege replacement, then revoke the old key. Never leave parallel keys active indefinitely for convenience.

Why is the Add Withdrawal Addresses permission dangerous?

Kraken states that the Add Withdrawal Addresses permission allows an API key to add and remove withdrawal addresses. If that permission is paired with Withdraw Funds, a compromised key may add an attacker-controlled address and then transfer assets to it. Kraken recommends avoiding both permissions on the same key unless absolutely necessary.

This is a privilege-combination problem. An address-management key can undermine a whitelist, while a withdrawal-only key may be safer if destinations are fixed and the exchange prevents it from editing them. Design the integration so no single credential has more authority than the task demands.

Legacy or unknown Any key whose owner or purpose is unclear Revoke it, then investigate logs before creating a replacement.

How do I review active login sessions and trusted devices?

Use the exchange’s Security, Devices, Sessions, or Login Activity page to inspect recent sign-ins and account changes. Binance says it provides a log of login attempts and actions; Binance.US exposes Device Management and an account-disable control.

  1. Review login attempts. Check timestamp, approximate location, device or browser, success or failure, and IP information when shown.
  2. Review trusted devices. Remove phones, browsers, hardware, or app sessions you no longer own. A device name you recognize can still be stale if it has been sold, repaired, or shared.
  3. Inspect security changes. Look for password resets, sign-in 2FA enrollment or removal, passkey changes, anti-phishing-code changes, API-key creation, address-book edits, and withdrawal events.
  4. Revoke unknown sessions. Use the individual sign-out or revoke control. If the exchange offers a sign out of all sessions command, use it after recording evidence.
  5. Change the password from a trusted device. Use a unique password that has never been used on another service. Do not change it from a device you suspect is compromised.
  6. Re-enroll strong authentication. Revoke an unknown authenticator or passkey, then enroll your own authenticator-based 2FA or passkey. Store recovery material offline.
  7. Freeze the account if needed. Use the official disable, freeze, or support process immediately when you see an unauthorized withdrawal, API key, address, or security change.

What counts as suspicious session activity?

  • A successful login from a country or network you have never used.
  • A new trusted device followed by an address-book or API change.
  • Repeated failed logins followed by a successful sign-in.
  • Password, 2FA, passkey, or anti-phishing-code changes you did not make.
  • API activity from an IP outside the key’s expected allowlist.
  • A withdrawal attempt that was blocked only because a newly added address was still locked.

Do not assume a familiar city proves legitimacy. Mobile carriers, corporate gateways, VPNs, and exchange geolocation errors can make locations approximate. Correlate the timestamp, device, security change, and API activity before deciding whether a session is yours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I find an unknown address, API key, or session?

Contain first, investigate second. The longer an attacker retains a valid session or key, the more likely a temporary compromise becomes an irreversible transfer.

  1. Stop activity. Pause bots, trading scripts, and withdrawals that use the affected account.
  2. Revoke access. Remove unknown sessions and devices, revoke every suspicious API key, and delete unrecognized withdrawal addresses if the exchange allows it.
  3. Secure the email account. Change its password, revoke unfamiliar sessions, enable strong 2FA, and check forwarding rules. An exchange account can be retaken through a compromised email account even after its own password changes.
  4. Reset exchange authentication. Change the exchange password from a trusted device, replace compromised 2FA or passkeys, and set an anti-phishing code where available.
  5. Use the official freeze or support path. Binance.US provides an account-disable control; other exchanges expose their own emergency or support procedures. Navigate to them directly rather than replying to a person who contacts you first.
  6. Preserve evidence. Save timestamps, transaction IDs, device details, IP information, key identifiers, and screenshots that do not reveal secrets. Do not send API secrets, 2FA codes, seed phrases, or remote-screen access to anyone claiming to be support.
  7. Check connected services. Review portfolio trackers, tax tools, bots, and cloud password managers for stale credentials or copied keys.
  8. Notify the relevant institutions. If funds were transferred, report the transaction to the exchange and, where appropriate, your bank, law-enforcement agency, or a regulated incident-response provider.

Never paste an API key, QR code, recovery code, seed phrase, or complete 2FA secret into a support ticket or chat. A screenshot can expose enough information to compromise an account even when the secret itself is partly obscured.

How should I strengthen authentication after the review?

Use a layered setup: a unique exchange password, an authenticator-based second factor or passkey, a protected email account, and an anti-phishing code where the exchange offers one. A hardware security key or passkey device can be an optional implementation of stronger authentication, but confirm that your exchange, account type, and recovery method support it before relying on it.

  • Prefer phishing-resistant sign-in. A passkey or hardware-backed security key can reduce the risk of a stolen one-time code being relayed to an attacker.
  • Keep recovery material offline. Store backup codes where they cannot be reached through the same cloud account as your email and exchange sessions.
  • Protect the email first. Use a separate password and strong 2FA, and review forwarding, recovery addresses, and active sessions.
  • Use anti-phishing indicators. Set a unique code or phrase when available and verify it on genuine exchange messages. It is a warning signal, not a substitute for checking the URL and app.
  • Never approve an unexpected prompt. An attacker may trigger repeated login or 2FA requests hoping you will accept one to stop the notifications.

How can I compare exchanges’ account-security controls?

Compare the controls that affect an attacker’s path to a transfer, not just whether an exchange advertises 2FA. The following questions produce a useful, repeatable comparison.

Control area Questions to answer Why it matters
Whitelist activation Can you enforce withdrawals to saved addresses? Is the enforcement separate from merely maintaining an address book? A list that is not enforced may not stop a new destination.
New-address hold What event starts the timer, how long is the lock, and can a setting disable it? A cooling-off period gives you time to detect an unauthorized edit.
API permissions Can keys add, remove, or use withdrawal addresses? Can trading and withdrawals be separated? Combined permissions can let one stolen key complete the entire attack.
Network restrictions Are IP allowlists, expiry dates, and per-key limits available? These controls narrow where and when a stolen key can work.
Session visibility Can you see login attempts, trusted devices, security changes, and API activity? You cannot investigate or contain activity that the account does not expose.
Emergency response Is there a direct disable, freeze, revoke-all-sessions, or authenticated support route? Fast containment matters more than a polished security dashboard after an incident.

Document the answers for each exchange you use and revisit them when you open a new account, change a bot, or move funds to a different network. A feature that exists in one product or region may not exist in another.

How often should I perform this review?

Perform a full review when you create the account, before a large transfer, after changing your password or 2FA, and whenever you install or retire an automated application. For active accounts, schedule a recurring check at least monthly; high-value or business accounts may justify a shorter interval and a second reviewer.

  • Every review: whitelist setting, addresses, network and labels, API inventory, key permissions, last use, sessions, devices, and recent security events.
  • After staff or vendor changes: revoke keys and devices belonging to people or services that no longer need access.
  • After a password or 2FA change: expect possible address holds and inspect every active session again.
  • Before a transfer: verify destination, network, memo or tag, lock status, and the final confirmation screen.
  • After an incident: repeat the review from a clean device and rotate credentials that could have been exposed.

What are the most common review mistakes?

Confusing a saved address with an enforced whitelist

An address book can be populated while unrestricted withdrawals remain enabled. Verify the enforcement switch and test what the exchange says will happen to an unsaved destination; do not infer protection from the presence of a list.

Ignoring the network field

Checking only the first and last characters of an address misses network mismatches and memo or tag requirements. Compare the full destination and the network displayed in the withdrawal form.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keeping a master API key for convenience

A single key with read, trading, address-management, and withdrawal rights creates one-step compromise. Split functions, restrict source IPs, set expiry, and revoke keys whose owner or purpose is unclear.

Trusting a familiar device forever

A trusted browser can be sold, infected, shared, or left logged in. Remove devices you no longer control and review sessions after every password or 2FA change.

Responding to impersonated support

Legitimate support will not need your API secret, password, 2FA code, seed phrase, or remote control of your screen. Start support from the exchange’s official app or site and preserve the suspicious message as evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a withdrawal whitelist recover coins sent to the wrong network?

No. A whitelist checks whether a destination is approved; it does not validate that the selected blockchain network matches the recipient’s wallet or service. Verify the network and any memo or tag before confirming the transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I disable an address hold to make transfers faster?

Only if you have assessed the loss of the cooling-off period and have another independent approval process. A shorter delay gives an attacker less time to be detected after an unauthorized address is added.

What is the safest way to share exchange access with an accountant or bot?

Use a separate, named account or least-privilege API key whenever the exchange supports it. Give read-only access for reporting, remove it when the work ends, and never share your primary password or 2FA device.

What evidence should I collect before contacting exchange support?

Record the account email, approximate incident time, device and IP details shown by the exchange, API-key identifiers, address-book changes, and transaction IDs. Keep secrets out of the record and use the exchange’s authenticated support or emergency channel.
