To manage what a memory-based AI remembers, inspect its memory controls, correct or remove the specific memory, and delete the chat, file, or connected-app source if you want to remove the information there too. Turning memory off is not the same as deleting existing memories, and deleting a chat may not delete a separate saved memory. A memory screen can help you check what is stored, but it may not be a complete inventory or prove that every copy has been erased.
What “memory” means—and what it does not mean
Memory is a product feature that can retain selected information for use in later conversations. It is distinct from the conversation in which you first shared that information. A platform may keep a saved memory separately from the chat that produced it, and it may offer separate controls for memory, chat history, files, and connected apps.

That distinction matters when you want to correct or remove something. Deleting a conversation might remove the source chat without deleting a separate memory derived from it. Conversely, deleting a memory entry does not necessarily delete the conversation or other source copy. Treat these as related but separate records unless the product explicitly says otherwise.
Also distinguish product memory from the broader idea that an AI model has “learned” something. These controls concern records and features managed by a particular product. A disappeared entry is not proof that every possible backend copy or trace has vanished, and it does not establish what may have happened outside the product’s documented controls.

Inspect what the product shows you
Start with the product’s memory area rather than relying on what the assistant says it remembers in a chat. The interfaces and available controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace.
ChatGPT
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Review the memory summary, saved memories, and any source links available there.
- Open relevant sources if you need to identify where a remembered detail came from.
OpenAI says the summary is high-level and may omit details or sources, so do not treat it as a complete inventory. The OpenAI Help Center describes memory as optional and says users can review, update, or delete saved memories, or turn memory off. Which controls appear can vary.

Microsoft Copilot Studio
Microsoft documents both conversational requests and a memory portal for reviewing memory. Use the portal when available to inspect stored information, and follow the product’s available deletion controls. The exact access and workspace arrangements may differ, so the controls available to an end user may not be identical in every deployment.
What to record during the review
Before changing anything, note the wording of the item and where it appears. If the interface provides a source link, open it and identify whether the source is a chat, archived chat, file, or connected app. This makes it easier to distinguish the memory entry from the underlying material and to verify the right records afterward.
Correct an inaccurate memory
If a remembered detail is wrong, replace it with a clear correction rather than leaving an ambiguous instruction. For example, say that the remembered fact is incorrect and state the accurate fact you want used instead. Then check the memory controls for an option to edit the item directly.

Use an edit control when available
When the product lets you edit a saved memory or topic, make the correction there and review the resulting wording. Keep the replacement specific enough to avoid a second interpretation. OpenAI supports correction in the memory summary or saved-memory controls, while Claude allows memory updates through conversation; Claude says those conversational changes apply to the next conversation.
Check the result in a fresh conversation
After making a correction, reopen the memory view and confirm that the displayed entry reflects the change. If you test the assistant in a new conversation, ask a neutral question that does not repeat or hint at the old detail. That can reveal whether the correction is being used, but a single response is a product check—not proof that every system record has changed.
Delete one memory, reset memory, or pause it?
Choose the control that matches your goal. Pausing or turning off memory generally affects future use or creation; deleting an entry removes a stored memory within the product’s stated scope; a reset can remove a larger set. These actions are not interchangeable.

| Control | What it is for | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off or pause | Stop future memory creation or use, depending on the product. | Existing data may remain. OpenAI says turning off Memory does not delete past chats; Claude says pausing preserves existing memory while stopping its use and new memories. (OpenAI Help Center; Claude documentation) |
| Delete an individual entry | Remove a particular saved memory or topic. | This does not by itself establish that the originating chat, file, or connected-app copy was deleted. (OpenAI Help Center; Microsoft Learn) |
| Reset or delete all memory | Clear a broader set of stored memories where the product offers this option. | Scope varies. Claude documents a permanent reset that includes project memories. (Claude documentation) |
| Temporary or incognito chat | Have a conversation without creating persistent memory in products that support the mode. | OpenAI says Temporary Chat does not create or update memories; Claude says incognito chats are not saved to memory or chat history. Availability and behavior are product-specific. (OpenAI Help Center; Claude documentation) |
| Delete the source | Remove the chat, file, or other originating material. | Source deletion is separate from deleting a saved memory. For fuller removal, check both. (OpenAI Help Center) |
Delete an individual item
Find the specific memory or topic in the product’s memory controls and use its delete option if available. Reopen the memory view afterward to check whether the item is still displayed. In Microsoft Copilot Studio, Microsoft documents deletion through its memory portal; the exact interface and permissions depend on the deployment.
Use a reset only when its scope fits
A full reset may remove unrelated memories along with the item you want gone. Review what the product says the reset includes before confirming. Claude’s documented reset permanently deletes all memories, including project memories, so it is a broader action than deleting one topic.
Pause memory when you want to limit future use
Use a pause or off control if your goal is to stop future memory use or creation rather than erase existing records. Check the product’s explanation of the control: OpenAI says turning off Memory does not delete past chats, and Claude says pausing leaves existing memory in place while stopping use and new memories.

Delete the sources as well as the memory
If your goal is to remove a piece of information rather than merely stop it appearing as a saved memory, look for every place it may have been stored. OpenAI explicitly warns that deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from it. Its guidance also indicates that fuller removal may require deleting every source copy.
- Chat or archived chat: Find and delete the conversation that contains the information. Do not assume this action also removes a separate saved memory.
- File or Library item: If the detail came from an uploaded or stored file, remove that file through its own controls as well as addressing any related memory.
- Connected app: Check whether the information remains in a connected service or in material imported from it. Removing a memory entry does not establish that the external source was changed.
- Memory entry: Delete the saved item or topic in the memory controls, or use a reset if the wider scope is intentional.
These are separate steps because products can retain source material and memory entries independently. The appropriate sequence is to identify the source, remove the memory entry, and then remove the source copies that fall within your goal.

- Reopen the memory view and check that the item no longer appears, or that its corrected version is shown.
- Check the relevant chat, archived chat, file, or connected-app source and use its own deletion controls if you want that copy removed.
- Start a fresh conversation without repeating the deleted fact, then check whether the assistant still uses it.
- Allow for product-specific processing time and review the provider’s stated retention information.
Verification is useful, but it has limits. A product’s memory view and a fresh conversation can tell you whether the visible feature appears to have changed; they cannot independently prove that every backend copy has vanished. OpenAI says deletion updates can take time and that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. That is a stated maximum retention period for those logs, not a promise that all other records are deleted on the same schedule.
How the controls differ across products
The table summarizes only what the product documentation described here establishes. It is not a feature guarantee for every plan, region, platform, or workspace.
| Product | Where to inspect | Correction or deletion | Temporary or paused use | Source deletion or retention detail |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Settings > Personalization > Memory; the summary may omit details or sources. (OpenAI Help Center) | Correction is supported through the summary or saved-memory controls; saved memories can be reviewed or deleted. (OpenAI Help Center) | Turning off Memory does not delete past chats. Temporary Chat does not create or update memories. (OpenAI Help Center) | Deleting a chat alone may not delete a separate saved memory. Deletion updates can take time; logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. (OpenAI Help Center) |
| Claude | Settings > Your Claude > Manage, or an older Memory/Capabilities location. (Claude documentation) | Memory topics can be managed; conversational updates apply to the next conversation. A documented reset permanently deletes all memories, including project memories. (Claude documentation) | Pause keeps existing memory but stops its use and new memories. Incognito chats are not saved to memory or chat history. (Claude documentation) | Not stated in the product details summarized here. (Claude documentation) |
| Microsoft Copilot Studio | A memory portal is documented for review; the exact access path is not stated in the product details summarized here. (Microsoft Learn) | Deletion through the portal and conversational requests are documented. Item-level editing and reset details are not stated here. (Microsoft Learn) | Temporary or incognito behavior is not stated here. (Microsoft Learn) | Not stated in the product details summarized here. (Microsoft Learn) |
Microsoft describes its approach as “Memory is transparent and user-controlled.” That principle does not mean every workspace exposes identical controls: the applicable product setup and permissions still matter. More broadly, vendor menus, plan availability, and workspace rules vary, so follow the labels visible in your own account rather than assuming every documented control is present.
Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Assuming the summary is a complete list: OpenAI says its memory summary is high-level and may omit details or sources. Review available saved-memory entries and source links too.
- Deleting only the chat: A separate saved memory may remain. Check and delete the memory entry separately.
- Turning memory off and expecting past records to disappear: An off or pause control may only limit future use or creation. Use the product’s deletion controls for existing entries, and address source records separately.
- Using a broad reset to remove one detail: A reset can affect unrelated information. Inspect the stated scope and prefer item-level deletion when that meets your goal.
- Treating a missing UI entry as proof of total erasure: Check source copies and the provider’s retention statement. Do not infer backend deletion beyond what the product documents.
- Testing by restating the old fact: That can put the information back into the conversation and make the result harder to interpret. Use a fresh, neutral test without supplying the fact.
A practical decision path
- You want the assistant to use the right information: Edit the memory if possible, or explicitly state the correction; then check the memory view and test in a fresh conversation.
- You want one remembered detail removed: Delete that individual item or topic, then check for a source chat, file, or connected-app copy.
- You want to stop future memory: Pause or turn off the feature, after confirming whether existing memories remain.
- You want all stored memory cleared: Review the reset’s scope and use it only if its wider effect is acceptable; then address source copies separately.
- You want a conversation not to create persistent memory: Start in a supported Temporary or incognito mode before sharing the information, and verify that the mode is available in your product.
The reliable approach is to treat memory, conversation history, and source material as separate controls. Inspect each relevant surface, make the narrowest change that matches your goal, and verify what the product actually shows rather than interpreting one control as a guarantee about every stored copy.
