Treat AI-generated code as a proposed change, not a finished solution. Before using it, compare it with the actual requirement, inspect every changed file, run the project’s tests and suitable analysis tools, and probe the important edge cases. A successful build or passing test suite is useful evidence—but only if the code and tests address the right behavior. A human developer must understand and accept the change.
What should I check before using AI-generated code?
Start with the change’s purpose and risk, then verify the implementation rather than relying on the explanation that came with it. Code can compile and still misunderstand a requirement, omit an edge case, or expose a security flaw. GitHub’s review guidance recommends checking the result against the intended behavior and testing it before use; its responsible-use documentation says, “You should always carefully review and test code generated by Copilot.” GitHub’s review guide and agent guidance are useful starting points.

Use this sequence for a change you might merge, deploy, or otherwise depend on:
- Restate the requirement. Write down what should happen, who or what the change affects, and what must remain unchanged.
- Read the whole diff. Inspect every modified file, including configuration, lockfiles, formatting-only changes, and tests. Do not substitute an AI-generated summary for reading the code.
- Check behavior and design. Compare the implementation with the requirement, project architecture, conventions, and nearby established patterns.
- Verify dependencies and APIs. Confirm proposed packages and APIs exist, are appropriate and maintained, and have licenses compatible with the project.
- Run and improve checks. Build or compile, run the existing tests, examine warnings and errors, and add tests for important behavior the suite does not cover.
- Review risk and ownership. Probe relevant failure and security cases, verify any AI review comments, and make sure a named developer understands and approves the change.
The order matters: tests cannot tell you whether the implementation answers the right question unless you first establish what the question is. The rest of this guide explains how to make each check concrete.

How do I establish whether the code matches the requirement?
Turn the original request into observable outcomes before judging the implementation. A function can be well-written and still be wrong for the project if it assumes a business rule, user action, or error response that was never specified.
Translate the request into expected behavior
Identify the input, the expected result, and the important constraints. For example, if a change is meant to reject invalid data, clarify what counts as invalid, what response the caller should receive, and whether existing valid cases must continue to work. This is a way to structure your review, not a claim that any particular application has those rules.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Then compare the code with the project’s architecture and nearby patterns. Ask whether the change belongs at this layer, follows the established way of handling errors, and leaves unrelated behavior alone. If the code relies on an assumption that the request did not establish, treat that as an open requirement—not as a detail the model is entitled to decide.
Separate implementation quality from requirement fit
Review two questions independently: “Does this code do what it says?” and “Is that what the project asked for?” A test may show that a function returns its expected value for the cases it covers, but it cannot establish that the chosen rule matches the product or system requirement. Resolve unclear behavior with the appropriate owner before treating a plausible interpretation as approved.
How should I inspect the complete diff?
Read every change that will enter the project, not just the most visible source file. AI-assisted changes can include configuration, dependency, or test edits that affect the result even when the main implementation looks reasonable.
Review files in context
- Source files: Trace the changed behavior from its entry point through the code it calls and the outputs or side effects it produces.
- Configuration: Check whether a setting changes deployment, permissions, build behavior, or which code runs.
- Lockfiles and manifests: Identify added, removed, or changed packages and versions; follow up on each dependency rather than treating a lockfile update as routine.
- Tests: Read additions and modifications to see which behavior they verify and what they leave untested.
- Formatting and generated changes: Separate mechanical edits from functional ones so that unrelated or obscuring changes do not hide a problem.
Look for scope creep: files or behaviors changed without a clear connection to the request. Ask why each such edit is necessary. A concise explanation from the code author can clarify intent, but it does not replace your own inspection of the changed code.

Check what disappeared as well as what appeared
Deletions can weaken a change’s safety net. Look for tests that were removed, skipped, narrowed, or replaced with mocks that no longer exercise the behavior under review. If the diff changes an existing test’s expected result, verify that the new expectation follows from the requirement rather than merely matching the implementation.
How do I verify dependencies and APIs?
Check each suggested package and external API independently. AI-generated code can refer to a package or method that does not exist, or add a real dependency that is unsuitable for the project.
For every dependency change, ask
- Does the package name and version resolve to the intended project?
- Is the package maintained well enough for the role it would play here?
- Does its license fit the project’s requirements?
- Does the change add a dependency that could be avoided with an established project facility?
- Does the package or API come from an appropriate source, and does its behavior match how the code uses it?
Inspect the manifest and lockfile together. A manifest can express the intended dependency while the lockfile records the resolved version; reviewing both helps reveal the actual scope of the change. If a package is unfamiliar, confirm it through the project’s normal dependency review process rather than assuming that a plausible name or import proves it exists.
What tests and checks should I run?
Run the checks that fit the project and the behavior being changed. At minimum, build or compile the code where applicable, run the existing test suite, inspect warnings and errors, and add tests for important uncovered behavior. Use relevant linting, static analysis, code-quality, and security checks in CI when available.
Run checks in a useful order
- Build or compile. Confirm that the changed code is accepted by the project’s normal build process. A successful build establishes a basic condition, not correctness.
- Run existing tests. Use the project’s ordinary test command or CI workflow. Check the actual results, including failures, skipped tests, and warnings that affect the change.
- Add targeted tests. Cover the requirement’s normal behavior, meaningful boundaries, and relevant error paths that existing tests do not exercise.
- Run suitable analysis. Use the project’s established lint, static-analysis, code-quality, and security checks where they apply.
- Review findings. Trace failures and alerts back to the code. Fix, investigate, or document each material finding; do not equate a green summary with a complete review.
There is no one check that proves every property of a change. NIST’s IR 8397 verification guidance describes techniques including threat modeling, automated and static testing, secret detection, black-box and structural tests, historical tests, fuzzing, web-application scanning where applicable, and checking included code such as libraries, packages, and services. It also cautions that the document is not a complete account of software verification, but offers broadly applicable minimum techniques. Choose methods according to the code’s risk, rather than treating a list of tools as a substitute for judgment.
How do I test edge cases and security risks?
Trace how the change handles inputs, boundaries, failures, permissions, concurrency, and sensitive data. Give authentication, authorization, input validation, and cryptography extra scrutiny because a defect in those areas can have consequences beyond a visible functional error.

Build tests around failure modes
For each important behavior, ask what happens when the input is malformed, missing, empty, unexpectedly large, or at a boundary. Consider whether dependencies fail, a request is repeated, or two operations happen concurrently if those conditions are relevant to the change. For access-controlled behavior, test both permitted and denied cases; for credential-dependent behavior, consider expired or invalid credentials where applicable.
These are prompts for selecting tests, not a universal checklist that every change must implement. A small formatting-only change may not warrant the same test depth as a change to access control or sensitive-data handling. Use the consequence of a missed defect to decide how much evidence is needed.
Match the technique to the risk
Static scanning can help identify suspicious code patterns; secret checks can catch accidentally exposed credentials; black-box tests can exercise externally visible behavior; structural tests can inspect how the code is built; fuzzing can explore varied inputs; and web-application scanning may be relevant for a web application. Threat modeling helps organize what could go wrong and where a control is needed. These methods have different scopes, and findings often require a developer to interpret them in context.
NIST’s 2024 AI-focused SSDF profile recommends including AI models in code-testing policies and identifies unit, integration, penetration, red-team, use-case, and adversarial testing as possible forms. It also recommends scoping tests, performing them, documenting results, and triaging findings and remediations. See NIST SP 800-218A and the NIST SSDF project page. This is guidance to select and manage verification, not a requirement to run every listed test on every change.
How can I tell whether the tests themselves are trustworthy?
Read tests as code and compare them with the requirement, not just with the implementation. A passing suite is weak evidence if it tests the wrong behavior, skips the relevant path, or was weakened as part of the change.
Look for coverage of behavior, not just execution
- Does a test assert the meaningful output or side effect, rather than only that the code ran?
- Does it cover the requirement’s important cases, including relevant invalid and boundary inputs?
- Did the change remove assertions, skip a test, or replace a real interaction with a mock that no longer exercises the behavior?
- Could the test still pass if the implementation returned the wrong result or failed to enforce an important rule?
Where the answer exposes a gap, add a human-designed test that would fail for the defect you are trying to prevent. For higher-risk logic, include adversarial cases appropriate to the behavior, such as malformed input or concurrent access when those are genuine risks. Tests created by the same AI that wrote the code can help, but they are not independent proof: review their assumptions and assertions just as carefully.

Should I use an AI tool to review the generated code?
You can use a separate AI review as another source of ideas, but not as the authority that approves the change. AI reviewers can miss defects, raise false positives, misunderstand project context, or suggest a fix that is itself incorrect or insecure.
For each finding, locate the relevant code and decide whether the issue is real under the project’s requirements. If a suggested fix changes behavior, review and test that fix as a new proposed change. Do not close a finding merely because an AI tool says it is resolved, and do not accept an unverified patch simply because the reviewer sounds confident. GitHub’s responsible-use guidance emphasizes human review and testing of generated code. Its documentation on agents describes the limitations of relying on an automated agent.
Which verification methods should I use, and when?
Use checks in layers: local checks provide fast feedback, review catches context and scope problems, CI applies repeatable project checks, and pre-release testing can target broader risks. The right combination depends on what could go wrong and what each check can actually establish.
| Method | Useful for detecting | Typical stage | Human interpretation needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build or compile | Build errors and some incompatible changes | Local or CI | Yes; success does not establish that behavior matches the requirement |
| Unit and integration tests | Functional errors in the behaviors the tests exercise | Local or CI | Yes; review whether tests assert the right behavior |
| Linting and static analysis | Some code-quality issues and suspicious patterns | Local or CI | Yes; assess findings in context |
| Dependency and included-library checks | Package, library, and service concerns | Review or CI | Yes; confirm whether each result applies to the project |
| Threat modeling | Potential design and security risks | Design or review | Yes; it depends on understanding the system and its threats |
| Fuzzing and adversarial testing | Unexpected behavior across varied or deliberately difficult inputs | Testing or CI, where suitable | Yes; assess findings and whether the tested cases fit the risk |
| Penetration, red-team, or web-application testing | Security weaknesses within the scope of the exercise | Pre-release or other planned security testing | Yes; interpret results and track remediation |
The techniques and test types in this table are drawn from NIST’s verification and AI-focused SSDF guidance; they are not a claim that every project needs every method. NIST IR 8397 and SP 800-218A describe the broader set of practices.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Who should approve the change?
A named developer should understand, approve, and own the change before it is used. For complex or sensitive work, involve a teammate with relevant expertise rather than relying on the person who prompted the model or on an automated review alone.
Ownership means the approver can explain how the change meets the requirement, what its important limits are, and what checks were performed. If no one on the team can do that, the code is not ready to be treated as understood. Record the test and analysis results through the project’s normal review process, and make sure material findings have been triaged rather than silently ignored.
Best Value
What should I do when a check fails or the requirement is unclear?
Stop at the uncertainty instead of treating a plausible result as approval. Diagnose whether the problem is a code defect, a test that encodes the wrong expectation, an unsupported assumption, or a project-environment issue.
- Reproduce the result. Confirm the failing command, test, warning, or analysis finding and identify which changed behavior it relates to.
- Compare against the requirement. Decide whether the implementation or the test expectation conflicts with the intended behavior. If the requirement does not settle it, get clarification from the responsible owner.
- Make a focused correction. Avoid broad rewrites that make it harder to tell which change addresses the failure.
- Re-run affected checks. Confirm the correction and verify that related behavior still works; a fix is another change to review.
- Document unresolved findings. Explain the risk and disposition through the project’s normal process, and do not represent an unresolved security or correctness concern as verified.
Passing checks supports a decision; it does not transfer responsibility away from the person approving the code. If you cannot explain why a material finding is safe to leave unresolved, seek the relevant expertise or keep the change out of use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use AI-generated code if the project has no test suite?
Yes, but the absence of a suite removes one source of evidence rather than lowering the standard. Write focused checks for the behavior being changed, run the build or other available validation, and record what remains unverified so the approver can make an informed decision.
Should I keep the prompt that produced code I plan to merge?
Keeping the request and any important clarification alongside the change can help reviewers understand intended behavior and assumptions. It does not replace the requirement, diff review, tests, or a human decision about whether the result belongs in the project.
When should an AI-generated change get a specialist review?
Bring in a reviewer with relevant expertise when the change is complex, security-sensitive, or touches areas the primary reviewer cannot confidently assess. That may include access controls, cryptography, or other high-consequence behavior where a missed defect would be difficult to contain.
