To review or revoke an AI assistant’s access, use your bank, card issuer, or brokerage’s connected-app or data-sharing controls—not only the assistant’s settings. Identify the assistant and any intermediary (such as an account-connection service), revoke the authorization, then change your password immediately if you ever typed banking credentials into the assistant or a non-OAuth form. Turn on multifactor authentication (MFA), sign out other sessions if available, review transactions and login history, and ask the service to delete data it already received. Revocation normally stops future authorized access; it does not guarantee that previously copied financial data has been erased.

Menu labels differ by institution, but the workflow is consistent: inventory every connection, determine whether it uses a security token or your password, revoke the token or remove the credential-based connection, secure the account, and verify the result.

Where can I see which apps access my bank or investment accounts?

Start with each financial institution rather than relying on the AI assistant’s own account page. Sign in through the institution’s official website or mobile app and look under Security, Privacy, Connected apps, Data sharing, Third-party access, or Authorized applications. The exact label and location vary by bank, card issuer, brokerage, region, and account type.

Make a separate inventory for every institution and account that could have been connected:

Record the name shown, the date of authorization if displayed, the accounts or data categories covered, and whether the connection is read-only or can initiate actions. A service may appear under its legal company name rather than the assistant’s brand. An intermediary may also be listed separately, so do not stop after finding the assistant’s name.

For example, Bank of America says customers using its secure data-sharing protocol can view third-party services accessing their data and revoke permission. If your institution provides no visible list, contact its support or fraud/security team and ask specifically for the inventory of third-party authorizations and a way to revoke them.

What is the difference between OAuth access and sharing a bank password?

OAuth or an equivalent API authorization sends the third party a security token after you approve access on the financial institution’s site. The assistant can use that token within the approved scope without receiving your bank password. Credential sharing sends a username and password to the assistant or an intermediary, giving it a path to sign in as you until the credentials are changed or the connection is otherwise disabled.

Connection characteristic OAuth or API token Username-and-password connection
What the third party receives A security token and the permissions granted by the institution Your login credentials, unless the service uses a separate secure vault or relay
Where approval occurs Usually on the bank, card issuer, or brokerage’s own sign-in page Inside the assistant or intermediary’s form, or through a login flow that asks the service to handle your credentials
How to stop access Revoke the assistant or intermediary in the institution’s connected-app or privacy dashboard Remove the connection and change the financial-institution password immediately
Ability to limit scope Often supports account, data-element, and read/write permissions; the exact controls depend on the institution Not stated; the third party may have the same sign-in privileges available to you
Credential exposure The authorization framework is designed to avoid sharing the password directly The third party may retain, process, or reuse the password until it is changed

Plaid describes OAuth as an industry-standard authorization framework for granting data access without sharing credentials directly. A token is safer to manage, but it is not a guarantee that an assistant is trustworthy: review the accounts and data elements in the consent screen, and revoke the token when it is no longer needed.

How do I revoke an AI assistant’s token-based access?

Use the financial institution’s authorization controls. Removing an assistant from a chat app or deleting the assistant account may not notify the institution, so complete the revocation at the data provider whenever possible.

  1. Open the institution directly. Type the bank, card issuer, or brokerage’s known address or use its official app. Avoid following an unexpected email or chat link while you are handling account security.
  2. Find connected-app controls. Open the menu path that most closely matches Settings → Security or Privacy → Connected apps, Third-party access, Data sharing, or Authorized applications. Some institutions place this under a profile menu or a privacy center.
  3. Match both names. Look for the AI assistant and for an intermediary such as an account-connection service. The intermediary’s name may be the only entry visible to the bank.
  4. Inspect the authorization. Note which accounts, balances, transactions, identity fields, or other data elements are covered. If the institution distinguishes read-only from payment or transaction permissions, record that status.
  5. Choose Revoke, Disconnect, Remove access, or a similarly labeled control. Confirm the prompt. If there are separate authorizations for different accounts, revoke each one you no longer need.
  6. Save the confirmation. Keep the confirmation screen, email, or reference number. It establishes when you asked the institution to stop access.
  7. Check the assistant or intermediary. Remove the connection there as well, so it will not keep trying to reconnect or display stale account data. This step supplements, but does not replace, revocation at the financial institution.

Under CFPB Regulation 1033.331(e), a data provider may satisfy its obligation by making available “a reasonable method to revoke any third party’s authorization to access all of the consumer’s covered data.” After receiving a request, the provider must revoke access and notify the third party in a timely manner. If the control is missing or fails, tell support that you are requesting revocation of third-party authorization under this rule and ask for escalation to the security or fraud team.

What should I do if I gave an AI assistant my banking username and password?

Treat the credentials as compromised, even if you never saw suspicious transactions. A password-based connection can give the third party the same access available to you, and deleting the assistant does not change the password it may have stored.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
  1. End the connection. Use the assistant’s disconnect or delete option if available, then close the service’s sessions.
  2. Sign in to the financial institution directly. Do not use a link supplied by the assistant or an unverified intermediary.
  3. Change the password immediately. Create a unique password that has not been used anywhere else. Bank of America advises changing the password as the safest response when login information was shared with a third-party app.
  4. Terminate other sessions. If the institution offers “sign out everywhere,” “log out other devices,” or a session list, use it after changing the password.
  5. Replace dependent credentials. If the same password was used for email, a password manager, or another financial service, change those accounts too. An attacker who controls email may be able to reset banking access.
  6. Contact security or fraud support. Explain that credentials were disclosed to a third party and ask whether the institution recommends additional restrictions, a new account number, or enhanced monitoring.

Do not assume that a password change revokes every token. A bank may keep an existing OAuth token active until you remove it from the connected-app list, so perform both actions when credentials and token access may have been involved.

How should I secure the account after revocation?

Revocation removes one route into the data; authentication and monitoring reduce the chance that another route is being used.

  • Enable MFA. Prefer an authenticator app, passkey, or hardware security key when the institution supports it. SMS may be the only option at some institutions, but any supported second factor is preferable to password-only access.
  • Review recovery settings. Check the recovery email address, phone number, trusted devices, and security questions. Remove entries you do not recognize.
  • Turn on alerts. Enable notifications for logins, password changes, new payees, transfers, card-not-present purchases, and other high-risk events offered by the institution.
  • Check limits and permissions. Review transfer limits, linked external accounts, bill-pay recipients, trading permissions, and third-party users. Revoke anything unfamiliar.
  • Update devices. Install current operating-system and browser updates, remove unknown browser extensions, and run the device’s normal malware scan before signing in again.

FFIEC guidance addresses customer and third-party access and identifies MFA as a control that can mitigate unauthorized access. It also emphasizes controlling and monitoring third-party relationships, which is why alerts and periodic access reviews matter after the immediate incident.

How do I verify that the assistant is really disconnected?

Verification should test both the institution’s authorization record and your account activity. A disconnected assistant should disappear from the connected-app list or show a revoked status, and no new login or data-access event should appear afterward.

  1. Reopen the authorization list. Refresh the page, sign out and back in, or check again later if the institution says changes are processed asynchronously.
  2. Confirm every related entry. Check the assistant’s name, the intermediary, and any duplicate entries covering separate accounts.
  3. Review login history. Look for unfamiliar devices, locations, browsers, or access times. Save details before they roll off the history.
  4. Review transactions and account changes. Check recent deposits, withdrawals, transfers, card purchases, new payees, profile edits, and security-setting changes.
  5. Contact the institution about anything unfamiliar. Use the number on the back of the card or the institution’s official website. Ask how to dispute transactions and preserve evidence.
  6. Continue monitoring. Keep alerts enabled and review activity over the next several statement cycles, especially if credentials were exposed.

FFIEC and related interagency guidance treats monitoring as an ongoing part of managing third-party relationships. A clean first review is reassuring, but it does not prove that previously copied data was deleted or that a separate authorization was not overlooked.

Does disconnecting an AI assistant delete financial data it already saw?

No. Revocation normally stops future authorized retrieval; it does not automatically erase balances, transaction histories, account numbers, prompts, logs, backups, or model-related records already received by the assistant or intermediary.

Bank of America warns that a third party may retain and use previously shared data. After revoking access:

  1. Read the service’s privacy and retention policy. Look for sections on deletion, backups, legal retention, training use, human review, and data exported to subprocessors.
  2. Delete stored connections and conversations. Remove the financial integration, saved files, uploaded statements, and chats containing account information where the service provides those controls.
  3. Submit a formal deletion request. Use the service’s privacy or data-rights channel and specify the account identifier, connected institutions, date range, and categories of financial data.
  4. Ask about copies. Request confirmation of deletion from active systems and an explanation of any copies retained for fraud prevention, legal compliance, backups, or dispute handling.
  5. Document the response. Keep the request and confirmation with your revocation record.

A deletion request to the assistant does not replace a request to the intermediary, and neither request replaces revocation at the bank. Each organization controls the copy in its own systems.

What should I compare before allowing an AI assistant to access an account?

Evaluate the connection as a data-sharing relationship, not merely as an AI feature. The most important differences are the authorization method, permission scope, revocation experience, and retention policy.

Decision point Questions to ask Why it matters
Authorization method Does approval happen on the institution’s site through OAuth or an API token, or does the service ask for a username and password? Token-based authorization avoids direct password disclosure and is easier to revoke centrally.
Data scope Which institutions, accounts, date ranges, balances, transactions, identity fields, and documents are shared? Sharing only the minimum necessary data limits exposure if the service or an intermediary is breached.
Action capability Is access read-only, or can the assistant create payees, initiate transfers, trade, or make payments? Transaction capability creates a materially different risk from viewing data.
Revocation visibility Can you see the connection in the institution’s dashboard, revoke it yourself, and obtain a confirmation? A visible, fast revocation path helps you respond when the service is compromised or no longer needed.
Retention and deletion How long are data, prompts, logs, backups, and support copies retained? Is there a documented deletion request process? Stopping access does not remove historical copies.
Authentication and alerts Does the institution support MFA, session management, and timely login or transaction alerts? These controls help detect and contain unauthorized use.

Secure data-sharing protocols can reduce the data shared, eliminate the need for a third party to store login credentials, show which data elements are exposed, and allow consent to be revoked. Those benefits depend on the institution and service implementing the controls correctly, so inspect the actual consent screen rather than relying on a product description.

What if the revocation button is missing or does not work?

Use a documented escalation path instead of leaving the connection active.

  1. Capture the institution name, account type, assistant and intermediary names, authorization date, and screenshots of the missing or failed control.
  2. Contact the institution through its official support or fraud channel and state: “I want to revoke this third party’s authorization to access all of my covered data.”
  3. Ask for a case number, the effective time of revocation, and confirmation that the intermediary was notified.
  4. If the institution says only the assistant can disconnect, repeat that you are requesting revocation at the data provider and ask for security-team escalation.
  5. If credentials were involved, change the password and terminate sessions while the case is open.
  6. After the stated processing period, recheck the authorization list and activity logs. Escalate again if the entry remains active or new access appears.

Interfaces and processing times differ, so do not infer that an absent confirmation means access has ended. Keep the case number and screenshots until the authorization disappears and monitoring shows no further activity.

Can a hardware security key improve protection after revocation?

A FIDO2/WebAuthn USB security key is an optional MFA upgrade if your bank, brokerage, or card issuer supports that standard. Register it only after you have secured the account, and keep a backup sign-in method stored safely in case the key is lost.

Check compatibility before buying: the institution must support FIDO2 or WebAuthn for customer login, and your phone or computer must support the required USB, NFC, or Bluetooth connection. A security key protects future sign-ins; it cannot revoke an existing AI-assistant authorization, delete previously shared data, or replace the password change required after credential disclosure.

How often should I review financial-account connections?

Review the connected-app list whenever you add or remove an assistant, change a financial password, close an account, or receive an unfamiliar login or transaction alert. A quarterly review is a practical baseline for people who use several financial services, while anyone who has shared credentials should review immediately and again after the institution confirms remediation.

Keep a simple inventory with the institution, account, assistant, intermediary, permission scope, authorization date, and revocation date. That record makes it easier to spot an unexpected connection and to give security support precise information without relying on memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI assistant with read-only access move money from my account?

Read-only authorization should not permit transfers or payments, but the exact permission model is set by the institution and intermediary. Check the consent screen and connected-app entry for payment, transfer, trading, payee-management, or other write capabilities rather than assuming that every AI connection is view-only.

How quickly does a bank revoke a third-party authorization?

The CFPB rule requires revocation and notice to the third party in a timely manner after a request, but it does not give one universal number of minutes or hours for every institution. Ask support for the effective time and verify the status in the authorization list instead of relying on an automated email.

Should I close an account after sharing my banking password?

Not automatically. First change the password, terminate sessions, enable MFA, inspect transactions and linked accounts, and ask the institution’s fraud team whether account-number replacement or closure is warranted for your circumstances.

What evidence should I keep after revoking an AI connection?

Save the authorization and revocation screenshots, confirmation emails, support case number, password-change time, and copies of unfamiliar login or transaction records. These details help the institution investigate and support a dispute if activity appears later.
