To safely undo an AI video edit, first identify what you need to reverse: one editing action, an entire assistant response, or a saved project version. Those are different recovery controls, and they do not preserve the same history. Premiere documents action-level Undo and History plus a separate Team Projects version history; Descript documents a response-level Revert control. A Runway product page describes prompt-based editing but does not establish a history or revert feature.

How do I undo an AI edit?

Start by checking the timeline and preview against the change you asked for. Then inspect the editor’s record of the work, if it provides one, and choose the narrowest recovery that removes the unwanted change. A single action, one assistant turn, and a published project version are not interchangeable units of rollback.

  1. Review the result. Play the affected section and compare the timeline or preview with your intended change. If the editor exposes an assistant conversation, inspect the request and response to understand what it says it changed.
  2. Choose the recovery scope. Use action-level undo or History for a particular operation; use a documented assistant-turn Revert to roll back that response; use a saved-version history when you need to recover a broader project state.
  3. Check which history is available. A session history may not survive closing the project. Collaborative published-version history is a separate mechanism and may contain only versions collaborators published.
  4. Verify the result. Recheck the affected timeline, preview, and any later edits you intended to keep. The documentation for these controls does not guarantee that every recovery preserves every downstream change.

Before using a recovery button, read its label and surrounding context. “Undo,” “Revert,” and “Restore” can describe different scopes even when they all appear to move a project backward.

It also helps to identify what record you are looking at. A conversation can show the assistant’s request-and-response context; an action history can list changes made during a session; and a version history can represent saved or published project states. A record of what happened is useful for choosing a recovery, but it does not necessarily mean that the record itself can restore the project.

Three kinds of recovery—and what each one changes

Recovery type What it targets What to check
Action-level Undo or History One or more recorded editing actions or project states Whether the action is still in the active session’s history and whether undoing it also affects later work
Assistant-turn Revert A particular assistant response or turn, where the editor documents that control Which response is selected and what the tool says will be rolled back
Saved or published version restore A broader saved project state or collaborator-published version Which version you are restoring and whether the recovery is collaborative or local

The names alone do not guarantee identical behavior across products. Confirm the selected action, response, or version before committing, then inspect the recovered project.

Think of the difference as granularity and persistence. An action-level control can be the most precise choice when the unwanted change is identifiable in the active history. A response-level control is relevant when an assistant made a set of edits and the editor explicitly offers to revert that response. A version restore can reach a broader checkpoint, but it represents a project state rather than a promise to reverse only AI-generated work. Check the editor’s documented scope instead of assuming that similar labels have the same effect.

Can I see what the AI changed?

Premiere AI Assistant: inspect the conversation and action history

Adobe says Premiere AI Assistant actions are added to Premiere’s Undo and History panels. The assistant also keeps conversation history so you can revisit earlier requests and actions, and Adobe says its generated work remains editable. Adobe describes changes as visible in the project as work happens. Together, these records give you two useful views: the conversation explains the request-and-response context, while Undo and History record editing actions.

That distinction matters when a result is unexpected. The conversation may help you identify which assistant request to investigate; the History panel can help you locate a recorded project action. Neither should be treated as a permanent project archive: Premiere’s ordinary History is session-scoped, as described below.

Adobe’s statement is specific: “All actions are added to Premiere’s Undo and History panels.” That makes the panels a place to inspect and act on assistant work, but it does not turn the conversation into a substitute for project history. Use the conversation to recall which request you made, then check the recorded actions and the resulting project state.

Adobe’s Premiere AI Assistant overview identifies the Undo and History records and the assistant conversation history. Adobe labels the feature public beta and advises testing with a duplicate or fresh project rather than client work you cannot afford to lose.

Premiere History: inspect and move through session actions

Premiere’s History panel displays actions and states for the current project session. Adobe says you can select an action to revert to the prior state; selecting a dimmed action redoes forward. This makes the panel useful for stepping back to a specific recorded point rather than guessing how many times to press Undo.

The scope is important: Adobe says previous actions are no longer available in the History panel after you close and reopen a project. If the project has been reopened, do not assume the ordinary History panel can recover the earlier session. Adobe’s History panel instructions were last updated January 21, 2026.

Adobe’s wording is direct: “After you close and reopen a project, the previous actions are no longer available in the History panel.” That is a practical boundary to remember when planning a recovery. If you still have the project open, inspect its current History before closing it; if it has already been reopened, look for a separately documented version-recovery path rather than expecting the old session stack to return.

Trim actions can be more granular than mode changes

For trimming, Adobe says each trim adjustment is recorded separately in History. Entering or exiting Trim mode does not itself create a History entry. If you are tracing a trim-related change, look for the individual adjustments rather than expecting the act of entering a mode to appear as an edit. See Adobe’s explanation of trimming actions in History, last updated August 18, 2026.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a useful example of why the unit of history matters: a mode change and an editing adjustment are not necessarily recorded as equivalent events. If the trim result is wrong, inspect the relevant adjustment entries and verify the timeline afterward. The documented detail applies to trimming; do not assume every other editor action is recorded at the same level of granularity.

How do I revert an AI video edit in Premiere?

  1. Review the assistant conversation. Find the request and response associated with the change you want to inspect. Adobe documents conversation history for revisiting earlier requests and actions.
  2. Open or inspect Undo and History. Locate the action or state that corresponds to the edit. Adobe documents that AI Assistant actions are added to both panels.
  3. Select the smallest relevant change. Use the recorded action or state to move back, rather than restoring a broader project version when a single operation is the problem. The History panel lets you select an action to revert to the prior state.
  4. Check later work and playback. Review the timeline and preview to confirm the unwanted result is gone and the remaining project is as intended.
  5. If the project was closed and reopened, reassess your recovery route. The ordinary History panel no longer has the previous actions. If this is a Team Project, its published-version history is distinct and may be relevant.

Adobe describes the AI Assistant as public beta. For a safe test, use a duplicate or a fresh project rather than a client project whose work you cannot afford to lose. The cited overview does not establish a guaranteed recovery outcome for every possible sequence of later edits, so verify the actual project after undoing.

In practice, separate the investigation from the recovery. First use the assistant conversation and current History entries to identify the change. Then decide whether a single recorded action is enough or whether the issue corresponds to a wider project state. After moving backward, check both the visible result and subsequent work; a control that returns to a prior state may not be the right choice if you need to retain work made after that point.

Premiere Team Projects: restore a published version, not a session action

Premiere Team Projects provide a separate recovery path for collaborative work. Adobe describes Team Projects as cloud-based collaborative projects with autosave and a published history. Each collaborator publication creates a version that collaborators can view or return to. That is version recovery; it is not the same as the ordinary History stack for actions in the current session.

Use published history when you need to inspect or return to a collaborator-published project version, rather than trying to treat it as a permanent record of every local action. Conversely, a published version should not be mistaken for the narrowest possible undo of one assistant action. Check which published state you want before returning to it, then verify the recovered project with the collaborators who need to continue working in it.

Autosave and published history describe the collaborative project workflow, but the relevant recovery unit remains the published version. If your goal is to remove one local mistake, first consider whether action-level History is available. If you need to return to a broader point represented by a collaborator’s publication, version history is the more relevant route. Keep the two mechanisms distinct when discussing what the team can inspect or restore.

Adobe describes the collaboration and published-history behavior in its Team Projects documentation. Its ordinary History panel documentation covers a different, session-based record.

Descript: revert an Underlord response

Descript’s changelog documents a Revert button below an Underlord response for agent edits. That is a turn-level control, not a general claim that every action in a project can be restored through the same button. The changelog says the Revert button replaced an earlier rollback placement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Descript also documents conversations as per-user and per-project. Older chats are read-only, while continuing or rolling back is available from the current open chat. So, when looking for a response to reverse, make sure you are in the relevant project and open conversation; an older read-only chat is not the same as the current chat with continuation or rollback available.

The useful decision is whether the unwanted work belongs to a specific Underlord response. The documented Revert control is below a response, so it is a response-level option; it should not be described as a general project restore or a promise that every unrelated project change will be undone. If the conversation is old and read-only, the changelog does not describe it as having the same continuation or rollback availability as the current open chat.

A separate changelog entry covers a concurrent-edit merge error. In that situation, Descript documents an alert with options to restore, export, compare in a new tab, or dismiss. Treat this as a specific merge-error recovery flow, not as the standard Revert behavior for an ordinary Underlord edit. The Descript changelog is mutable; its cited August 5, 2026 release roundup documents these controls, so the current interface may differ.

What does Runway document about reverting edits?

Runway’s cited product page describes Aleph as a way to make localized, prompt-based changes to existing video, and says Edit Studio is available on paid Runway plans. That page does not establish an edit-history or revert control. The fact that a tool can generate multiple edit variations does not, by itself, show that it can restore an earlier project state or reverse an assistant turn.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are considering this workflow, check the product’s current controls directly before relying on a particular recovery method. The available evidence supports the editing description, but not a claim about a Runway History, Undo, or Revert feature. See Runway’s AI video editor page.

This is an important comparison limit: a product page can establish that prompt-based edits are offered without establishing how mistakes are reversed. Do not infer that a variation is a saved checkpoint or that it can be restored as a full project state. Confirm the actual recovery options in the product before making a workflow depend on one.

How version history differs from AI-edit rollback

Version history is useful when you need a broader checkpoint, but it is not proof that an editor tracks or reverses AI actions individually. Canva’s help page, for example, describes previewing design versions and restoring one or making a copy; access depends on the user’s role and plan. This is a useful contrast for version recovery, not evidence about AI video editing controls.

Before restoring any older version, compare the target version with the current project and consider whether later work should be retained. A restore or copy operation operates at the version level, unlike an action-level History selection or a response-level assistant Revert. Canva documents its version-history behavior at Review and restore older versions of designs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Canva’s example also illustrates two details to check in any version-history workflow: whether you can preview the candidate version and whether access is available under your role and plan. Those are version-history considerations, not evidence that Canva provides AI-video rollback. Keep the comparison narrow: version previews, restore, and copy are different from undoing a single timeline operation.

Compare the documented controls

Editor or feature What the documentation says is recorded Recovery scope Persistence or access qualification
Premiere AI Assistant Assistant requests and actions in conversation history; assistant actions in Undo and History Action-level undo or History selection Public beta; Adobe advises using a duplicate or fresh project instead of client work you cannot lose
Premiere History panel Actions and states in the current project session Select an action to revert to the prior state; select a dimmed action to redo forward Previous actions are unavailable in the panel after closing and reopening the project
Premiere Team Projects Published project versions created when collaborators publish View or return to a collaborator-published version Collaborative cloud project; separate from ordinary session History
Descript Underlord Underlord response and per-user, per-project conversations Revert a response; continue or roll back from the current open chat Older chats are read-only; changelog details may change
Runway Product page describes prompt-based localized video changes The cited page does not document history or revert controls Edit Studio is described as available on paid plans

When comparing editors, ask five questions: What is recorded—individual actions, assistant turns, or published versions? How long does that record persist? Is recovery local to a session or collaborative? Does the product documentation explicitly describe the control? Is the feature beta or subject to plan or role limits? Those questions are more useful than comparing button names alone.

On the documentation described here, Premiere is the clearest example of action-level records, with a separate version route for Team Projects. Descript documents a response-level Underlord Revert and a distinct merge-error recovery flow. Runway’s cited page supports prompt-based editing and a paid-plan qualification for Edit Studio, but not a documented recovery control. Canva is a version-history contrast whose access depends on role and plan, not a source for AI video rollback.

How to avoid losing work while testing AI edits

  • Use a duplicate or fresh project for beta features. Adobe specifically advises this for its public-beta AI Assistant instead of client work that cannot be lost.
  • Identify the recovery scope before editing. Know whether you need to undo one operation, revert an assistant response, or restore a published version.
  • Do not rely on session History as an archive. In Premiere, closing and reopening removes the previous actions from the ordinary History panel.
  • For collaborative recovery, identify the version. Team Projects published history represents collaborator publications, not the session’s full action stack.
  • Verify after recovery. Check the timeline and preview, especially if other work followed the unwanted edit. The cited documentation explains the controls but does not promise that all later changes will remain intact in every recovery scenario.

For a beta workflow, treat the duplicate or fresh project as a test environment rather than as proof that a recovery control will behave a certain way. Adobe’s caution is specifically about avoiding client work that cannot be lost. Keep the goal modest: test how the documented controls behave in a project you can afford to inspect, and check the actual result before applying a workflow to more consequential work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which recovery control should you choose?

  • A specific recorded edit is wrong: look for action-level Undo or History and select the smallest relevant operation or state.
  • An assistant response made an unwanted set of edits: use a response-level Revert only if the editor documents it for that assistant response, as Descript does for Underlord.
  • You need to return to a broader checkpoint: inspect saved or published version history and choose the correct version; do not assume it is equivalent to undoing one action.
  • The project has been reopened or is collaborative: check whether the relevant history still exists and whether a published-version mechanism applies.
  • The editor’s cited page says nothing about recovery: do not infer a rollback feature from AI editing or variation generation; confirm available controls before depending on them.

If you are unsure which category applies, pause before restoring anything. Identify the event you want reversed, the record that shows it, and the scope of the control offered. Then verify the project after the change. That simple sequence—inspect, choose the narrowest documented control, and check the result—reduces the chance of confusing an assistant rollback with a broader version restore.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I undo an AI edit?

Inspect the timeline and preview, then use the narrowest documented control that matches the change: action-level Undo or History for a recorded operation, a response-level Revert if the editor offers one, or version history for a broader project state. Verify the recovered project afterward.

Can I see what the AI changed in Premiere?

Adobe says Premiere AI Assistant actions appear in Undo and History, and the assistant keeps conversation history so you can revisit requests and actions. The conversation provides context; the panels record editing actions.

Does Premiere keep History after I close and reopen a project?

No. Adobe says previous actions are no longer available in the ordinary History panel after you close and reopen a project. Team Projects published-version history is a separate recovery path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I revert an Underlord edit in Descript?

Descript’s changelog documents a Revert button below an Underlord response. It also says older chats are read-only, while continuing or rolling back is available from the current open chat. The current interface may differ as the changelog changes.

Does Runway document a way to restore or undo AI video edits?

The cited Runway product page describes localized prompt-based edits to existing video and says Edit Studio is available on paid plans, but it does not document an edit-history or revert control. Do not assume that variations are restorable project versions.

Is restoring a project version the same as undoing one AI action?

No. A version restore returns to a broader saved or published state; action-level Undo or History targets recorded editing actions, and an assistant-turn Revert targets a particular response where documented.

The Bottom Line

Review the result, identify whether the unwanted change is an action, an assistant response, or a project version, and use the smallest documented recovery control. Premiere History is session-scoped; Team Projects published history is separate. Descript documents an Underlord response-level Revert, while the cited Runway page does not document a revert control. Always verify the recovered timeline and preview.
