AI-generated labels are useful as draft annotations, not as ground truth. A reviewer must verify every claimed action against the original episode, task instructions, robot actions and state, and all relevant camera views. The reliable process is to freeze a written rubric, inspect the complete episode, correct only what the evidence supports, preserve every decision, and then test the resulting dataset in the actual training loader. This matters because labels can be semantically wrong, temporally misaligned, incomplete, or attached to defective recordings even when the metadata looks clean.
Why can’t AI-generated robot-video labels be trusted without review?
A label is a claim about what happened, where it happened, and when it happened. Video does not validate its own annotation: an action may be described with the wrong object, a boundary may be shifted, or a plausible sentence may infer intent that no camera can establish. Reviewers therefore need to compare the label with the task definition and observable episode evidence rather than accept fluent wording as proof.

Pantheon’s 2026 Argus audit illustrates the risk without establishing an industry-wide error rate. It examined 3,546 episodes across nine datasets, totaling 66.5 hours. At least one medium- or high-severity issue was flagged in 27% of those episodes. Across eight datasets that contained instructions or labels, 20% of episodes had an instruction or label that did not fully match the footage. The audit reported 46 problem types—25 in data and 21 in operator demonstrations. These are results from that publisher’s pipeline, not a representative estimate for every robotics dataset.
The practical consequence is that review must cover more than spelling or sentence quality. It must establish whether the episode is usable, whether the event is visible, whether timing and streams are intact, and whether a failure or recovery has been represented according to the training policy.

What should a review contract define before anyone scales annotation?
Write the rules before reviewing a large batch. The contract turns personal judgment into repeatable decisions and gives adjudicators a reference when an episode is ambiguous.
Define the label unit and vocabulary
- State whether a label describes the whole task, a subtask, or an atomic action.
- Publish allowed action verbs, object names, hand or tool names, and outcome terms.
- Specify whether simultaneous actions receive separate labels or one combined label.
- Define how the instruction relates to the label: exact text, normalized wording, or a controlled task identifier.
Set temporal and visibility rules
- Define the start event and end event for each action class.
- Set an acceptable timestamp tolerance and a rule for frames in which contact, release, or completion is partly occluded.
- Say how much context a reviewer may use before and after a labeled interval.
- Mark an action as unsupported when the actor, object, robot tool, or relevant state is not visible enough to establish the claim.
Decide how to represent ambiguity, failure, and recovery
- Use an explicit uncertainty or adjudication state instead of forcing a guess about intent.
- Define whether a failed attempt remains a valid demonstration, receives a failure outcome, or is excluded.
- Specify whether recovery is a separate event, an attribute of the failed action, or part of a longer task label.
- Define how aborted, interrupted, and repeated attempts are segmented.
Define recording defects and acceptance states
Separate semantic errors from evidence defects. A wrong action word can be corrected; a missing camera view or truncated recording may require rejection, re-capture, or a special “insufficient evidence” state. Include rules for idle footage, cut-off episodes, dropped frames, sped-up video, swapped streams, timestamp gaps, and contradictions between video and robot signals.
Recommended Free Tools
Version the contract. Every accepted or corrected label should point to the rubric version used, so a later policy change can be reproduced rather than silently rewriting history.
How do I load an episode and all of its evidence?
Start with the original episode, not a rendered clip or a label-only export. Pantheon describes a review context that brings together camera streams, task instructions, robot state and actions, and publisher annotations. Your stack may expose fewer channels, but the reviewer should know exactly which evidence is available and which is absent.
- Open the complete episode. Confirm the episode identifier, declared duration, frame rate, camera list, task text, and annotation version.
- View every relevant camera. Check whether a side, wrist, overhead, or external view is needed to establish object contact, tool motion, or an outcome.
- Load synchronized robot channels. Where supplied, inspect action commands, gripper state, joint or end-effector state, force or contact signals, and timestamps alongside video.
- Record missing evidence. If a stream, instruction, or state channel is unavailable, mark that limitation before deciding whether a claim is supported.
- Check stream identity. Compare camera content with declarations and neighboring episodes; a swapped left/right or wrist/external stream can make an otherwise correct label appear wrong.
Do not treat a successful file open as proof of a valid episode. Decoding confirms that bytes can be read; it does not confirm synchronization, semantic correctness, or usable robot signals.
How should a reviewer verify a label against the footage?
Use a two-pass review: first understand the episode, then inspect each claim at its boundary. Keep the original proposal visible while making the decision.

Pass one: watch for the actual task
Watch the entire episode at normal speed, including the opening and closing context. Identify the task the operator appears to be attempting, any repeated or abandoned attempts, unexpected people or objects entering the scene, and periods of idleness. This prevents a narrow clip from hiding a truncation or a preceding action that changes the interpretation.
Pass two: test each label claim
- Action: Did the stated movement or interaction occur?
- Object: Is it the named object, rather than a visually similar item?
- Actor or tool: Does the claimed hand, gripper, arm, or tool perform the action?
- Outcome: Did the object move, attach, open, close, or reach the stated state?
- Instruction: Does the label describe the assigned task rather than an unrelated event?
- Interval: Do the start and end times bracket the observable event without including unrelated motion?
Write down the supporting interval and camera view. If a claim depends on a brief contact or release, note the exact frame range or timestamp convention used by your tooling. When views disagree, do not average the interpretations: identify the conflict and escalate it under the rubric.
What errors should a robotics video-label review catch?
Use an error taxonomy so that corrections can be measured and recurring defects can be fixed upstream. Pantheon’s audit supplies examples, but no single publisher’s list should be treated as exhaustive.
| Error class | What to look for | Typical disposition |
|---|---|---|
| Instruction or task mismatch | The instruction or action label describes a different task from the footage. | Correct the task identifier or label; escalate if the episode was collected for the wrong task. |
| Wrong or missing action | An action, object, hand, tool, or event is mislabeled or omitted. | Edit the supported claim and add a missing event when the rubric permits. |
| Boundary error | Start or end time begins after the action, ends too late, or merges separate events. | Retimestamp or split the interval; mark uncertain boundaries for adjudication. |
| Unrelated, truncated, or idle footage | Valid action is skipped, unrelated footage is included, or the episode ends before the task is observable. | Trim only when the contract allows it; otherwise flag the episode as defective or incomplete. |
| Insufficient visibility | The relevant actor, hand, object, or robot tool is hidden, out of frame, or too blurred to support the claim. | Use another synchronized view if available; otherwise mark unsupported rather than infer. |
| Stream or metadata inconsistency | Declared camera identity differs from content, or streams are swapped. | Correct declarations only with evidence; quarantine affected episodes when identity cannot be established. |
| Video–signal contradiction | Recorded action, gripper, or state disagrees with visible behavior. | Check synchronization and units, then escalate unresolved conflicts. |
| Failure or recovery misrepresentation | A failed attempt is flattened into success, or recovery is omitted or mislabeled. | Apply the task policy; preserve outcome and recovery information when required. |
| Unsupported inference | The wording is plausible but no available view or signal establishes intent. | Flag uncertainty or request adjudication instead of inventing a mental state. |
Examples reported by Pantheon include a person entering the scene, a task object outside every camera view, cut-off or idle episodes, swapped camera streams, sped-up video, and gripper motion inconsistent with video. Treat these as useful failure patterns, not as a universal completeness claim.
How do I correct labels without destroying useful information?
Make the smallest correction that the evidence supports. Preserve the proposal and the reason for changing it; a clean final label without its history cannot be audited.
- Freeze the original. Store the generated text, timestamps, confidence fields, model or pipeline version, and source episode as immutable input.
- Choose a disposition. Use controlled states such as accepted, corrected, split, merged, unsupported, defective recording, or needs adjudication.
- Edit observable facts. Change action, object, actor, outcome, or time only when the video or synchronized signal establishes the replacement.
- Separate observation from interpretation. “Gripper closes while touching the red block” is evidence; “the robot intended to secure the block” may not be.
- Attach evidence. Record the interval, camera or channel, and a short rationale tied to the rubric.
- Escalate uncertainty. A second reviewer or adjudicator should resolve conflicting views, ambiguous contact, and policy questions.
- Save a new version. Do not overwrite prior decisions; link the corrected record to the reviewer, timestamp, rubric version, and review state.
Wortel describes a four-human-review workflow and rule-based clip specifications as its service model. That is an implementation example, not a universal requirement or quality threshold. The important property is independent review with retained correction history, not a particular number of passes.

What does metadata validation check—and what does it miss?
Metadata checks protect the dataset’s structure, but they do not prove that a label matches the video. Datum’s v0.1 rubric is explicitly metadata-focused and states that its current build does not include video decoding or per-episode signal checks.
| Validation layer | Checks to perform | What passing means |
|---|---|---|
| Manifest and format | Required files, episode IDs, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, declared streams, and parseable annotation schema. | The loader can locate and parse expected assets. |
| Task and licensing | Task text or identifiers, provenance, usage rights, and split membership. | Episodes are legally and semantically assigned to the intended collection. |
| Time and synchronization | Timestamp origin, units, monotonicity, frame numbering, dropped frames, and camera/state alignment. | Events can be compared on a common timeline. |
| Robotics conventions | Units, coordinate frames, joint order, action semantics, gripper conventions, and calibration declarations. | Signals have an interpretable meaning in the target stack. |
| Content and labels | Decode video, inspect visibility, compare labels with actions and outcomes, and test boundaries. | Claims are supported by episode evidence. |
| Loader integration | Import a sample through the exact training or preprocessing code, then inspect tensors, masks, labels, and errors. | The dataset behaves correctly in its intended training environment. |
Run these layers separately and report them separately. A metadata pass cannot certify semantic labels, and a visually correct clip can still fail because its coordinate frame or timestamp convention is wrong.

Use the same loader, preprocessing path, and label schema that training will use. A file browser or annotation interface may accept records that the training pipeline silently drops or misinterprets.
- Build a small manifest. Include accepted, corrected, uncertain, failed, recovered, occluded, and multi-camera episodes.
- Import without filtering. Capture warnings, dropped records, unknown labels, timestamp errors, shape mismatches, and missing streams.
- Inspect decoded samples. Confirm that frames, masks, action targets, outcomes, and camera order match the review record.
- Check distribution effects. Count task, outcome, camera, and failure categories before and after correction so review does not accidentally remove difficult examples.
- Re-open random imported episodes. Compare loader output with the source viewer, especially around boundaries and synchronized state.
- Lock the release. Store the manifest, schema version, rubric version, correction log, and loader commit or package version with the dataset release.
A target-stack check should fail loudly when a label is unknown, a stream is absent, or a timestamp cannot be aligned. Silent coercion is dangerous because it can produce apparently trainable data with incorrect targets.
Which review approaches can be combined, and which claims should stay separate?
Different tools and services address different layers. Compare them by capability rather than by a vendor’s headline number; the available descriptions do not provide a controlled head-to-head evaluation.
| Approach | Content or metadata? | Evidence and controls described | Limits to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pantheon Argus | Model-assisted annotation and quality pipeline with deterministic checks; its published audit examines episode content and related records. | Considers cameras, robot state and actions, task instructions, and publisher annotations; reports severity-ranked findings. | Its 27% and 20% figures are its own 2026 audit results, not an industry benchmark. |
| Wortel review service | Human review of clips under a rule-based specification. | Describes four human passes and retained review/correction records. | The number of passes and any stated thresholds are service choices, not universal standards. |
| Datum v0.1 rubric | Metadata and structural validation. | Checks dataset declarations and conventions within its stated scope. | Its current build does not validate video decoding or per-episode signals. |
| Human-written failure labels | Manual semantic annotation. | Oopsie Data says its current project accepts human-written labels and has not found AI models precise enough for failure-mode descriptions. | This is that project’s position and should not be generalized to every model or task. |
| In-house hybrid | Combines automated checks with trained human adjudication. | Can tailor visibility, boundary, failure, and loader rules to one robot and task family. | Requires rubric maintenance, reviewer training, audit storage, and capacity planning. |
A sensible combination is automated structural screening, synchronized human content review, and a final target-loader test. Keep the result of each layer distinct so a metadata pass is never presented as semantic approval.

How do I handle failed demonstrations and recoveries?
Do not automatically discard a failed attempt. A task outcome may be part of the training signal, and its meaning depends on the dataset policy. A failed grasp, a recovery that succeeds later, and an episode that never reaches the goal are different events even if a success-only label makes them look identical.
- Record the attempted action and the observed outcome separately when the schema permits.
- Mark the point of failure and any subsequent recovery rather than stretching one success interval across both.
- Keep an episode as a valid failed demonstration when the collection policy uses failures for learning or evaluation.
- Classify a defective recording separately when the outcome cannot be determined because of missing views, truncation, or corrupted signals.
- Ask an adjudicator to resolve policy conflicts; do not let a reviewer silently convert a failure to success to satisfy a label distribution.
This distinction protects both data quality and scientific interpretation: removing every failure changes the task distribution, while retaining recordings with no usable evidence teaches the model the wrong thing.
How should a team pilot the process before reviewing thousands of episodes?
Start with a representative, deliberately difficult sample rather than an easy random slice. Include different operators, camera arrangements, task variants, failures, recoveries, occlusions, boundary cases, and episodes with conflicting signals.
- Have at least two reviewers apply the same rubric independently.
- Compare disagreements by category: task identity, action, object, boundary, visibility, stream identity, signal conflict, and outcome.
- Inspect high-disagreement episodes with an adjudicator and revise the wording of the rule that caused confusion.
- Repeat the pilot after the rubric changes; do not mix decisions made under incompatible versions.
- Estimate reviewer capacity from actual review time, escalation rate, and rework rather than from clip duration alone.
- Only then scale, with periodic blind audits to detect drift in reviewer behavior and model-generated proposals.
Track acceptance, correction, escalation, and defective-recording rates by task and source. These rates describe your collection and process; they should not be presented as a universal accuracy score.
What should a complete audit record contain?
For every episode and label, retain enough information for another qualified reviewer to reconstruct the decision.
- Episode and dataset identifiers, source file hashes, and annotation version.
- Original AI proposal, model or pipeline version, confidence fields, and generation time.
- Final label, timestamps, disposition, and any split or merge relationship.
- Rubric version, reviewer identity, independent-review status, adjudicator identity, and decision time.
- Evidence references: camera or signal channel, supporting interval, and concise rationale.
- Uncertainty, defect, failure, and recovery classifications.
- Loader-validation result, warnings, and release manifest membership.
Protect reviewer and operator information according to your organization’s access policy, and make the log append-only or otherwise tamper-evident. Auditability is useful only if the record survives export, correction, and dataset-version changes.
Best Value
What is the practical standard for accepting a label?
Accept a label when its task, action, object, actor, outcome, and temporal boundaries are supported by the available episode evidence under the current rubric; the recording itself is structurally sound; and the corrected record imports correctly into the target stack. If evidence is missing or contradictory, preserve the uncertainty or defect state instead of manufacturing certainty. That rule is stricter than checking whether the sentence sounds reasonable, but it is what keeps a robotics dataset teachable and auditable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every episode be watched at normal speed?
Yes for the first pass of a full-episode review, because idle periods, preceding attempts, and truncation can change the label’s meaning. Use frame-by-frame or slowed playback only around disputed contacts, releases, boundaries, and signal conflicts; record the playback method in the decision note when timing is consequential.
What should I do when two camera views appear to show different actions?
First verify that timestamps, camera identities, and frame rates are aligned. If the conflict remains, preserve both observations, identify which view the rubric treats as authoritative, and send the episode to adjudication rather than choosing the more convenient interpretation.
Can an automated rule correct timestamps safely?
Automation is appropriate for bounded, observable events when the rule is deterministic and its tolerance is documented. Keep the pre-automation interval, the algorithm version, and a sample-based human check; do not auto-correct ambiguous intent, occluded contact, or outcome labels.
How can I measure whether reviewers are applying the rubric consistently?
Use blind duplicate reviews and report agreement separately for task identity, action, boundaries, visibility, and outcome. Investigate disagreement patterns by reviewer and task, then revise unclear rules instead of treating a single aggregate agreement number as proof of quality.
What happens if the training loader drops corrected episodes?
Treat the drop as a release-blocking defect until you know whether the cause is schema, timestamp, stream, or filtering logic. Compare the source manifest with loader logs, fix the underlying record or parser, and rerun the same representative validation set before release.
