Review an AI shopping agent’s proposed order as a draft, not a completed purchase. Before selecting the final approval control, verify every item and quantity, the merchant, currency, taxes, shipping, discounts, fees, total, delivery address and method, and the payment method. Then compare that exact checkout with the limits you authorized. Protocols such as Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) distinguish a person approving a closed checkout from autonomous buying constrained by instructions approved earlier.
The safest workflow is to inspect the merchant’s authoritative cart, approve only on the service’s trusted screen, and save the order confirmation. Price and stock safeguards differ by service: Google says its Agentic checkout will not proceed when the final price exceeds the amount you confirmed, but that is a Google-specific policy rather than a guarantee made by every shopping agent.

What exactly should I review before an AI shopping agent checks out?
You should be able to identify what is being bought, from whom, for how much, where it will be delivered, how it will be paid for, and whether the purchase falls within the permission you granted. If any of those answers is unclear, do not approve the order.
| Review area | Check on the proposed checkout | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Items | Product name, model, variant, size or other option, quantity, and condition | An agent can select a substitute or a different variant while still appearing to satisfy a natural-language request. |
| Merchant | Legal or displayed merchant name and the site handling fulfillment | Returns, cancellations, delivery support, and the seller’s terms are tied to this merchant. |
| Money | Currency, each item price, taxes, shipping, discounts, service fees, and final total | The search result or an earlier estimate is not necessarily the amount charged at checkout. |
| Fulfillment | Shipping address, delivery option, promised timing if shown, and its cost | A correct item sent to the wrong address or by an unwanted method is still a failed purchase. |
| Payment | Card, bank account, wallet, or other method displayed, plus any authentication request | Approval should charge only the account you intended to use. |
| Authority | Whether this merchant, order value, delivery arrangement, and item fit your instructions | Permission to search or compare is not automatically permission to buy every resulting cart. |
OpenAI’s Agentic Checkout Spec describes a rich checkout state containing line items, computed pricing, taxes and fees, shipping, discounts, fulfillment information, and totals. Those fields give you the information needed for a meaningful review; they do not remove your responsibility to read the values.

How do I review an AI shopping agent’s cart step by step?
Use this sequence whenever an agent presents a purchase for approval. Stop at the first mismatch instead of relying on the agent to correct itself after payment.
- Read each line item. Confirm the exact product name, model, variant, quantity, and merchant. If the agent substituted an item, compare the replacement with the original requirement. For example, a request for a particular capacity or size is not satisfied merely because the replacement has a similar description.
- Expand the complete price breakdown. Check the currency and every component: item prices, taxes, shipping, discounts, and additional fees. Confirm that the displayed total is computed from the current cart, not copied from an earlier search result.
- Verify fulfillment. Check the full shipping address, including apartment or unit information, and select the intended delivery option. Confirm the fulfillment charge and any timing shown by the merchant.
- Compare the cart with your authorization. Ask whether the exact merchant, item set, amount, destination, and delivery method fit the boundaries you approved. A broad instruction such as finding a product does not by itself explain whether a more expensive substitute or a different seller is acceptable.
- Inspect payment and authentication. Make sure the payment instrument shown is yours and is the one you intended. Treat an unexpected request to add a new payment method or provide credentials outside the service’s normal approval screen as a reason to pause.
- Use the explicit approval control. Approve only after the preceding details match. In OpenAI’s checkout design, completion occurs after the customer clicks Buy with a selected payment method; the merchant remains responsible for processing payment and returning authoritative checkout or order state.
- Save the confirmation. Retain the order ID, merchant name, final amount, and confirmation message or email. You will need those details if the item is wrong, the order must be canceled or returned, or delivery fails.
This process is deliberately slower than accepting a conversational “Looks good” message. The approval action should be tied to the closed cart you actually inspected.

How do I know whether the agent is authorized to buy this exact order?
Separate permission to assist from permission to spend. AP2 describes two broad patterns: a human-present flow, where you see and approve the closed checkout, and a human-absent flow, where the agent can act under constraints you approved in advance.
Human-present approval
In a direct flow, the agent assembles the cart but waits for you to approve the final contents and amount. Your review should cover the complete checkout, not just the conversational summary. The approval is meaningful only when the screen identifies the merchant, items, costs, fulfillment and payment details.
Human-absent purchasing under constraints
An autonomous flow can be appropriate only when its boundaries are explicit. Examples of boundaries include a maximum amount, permitted merchants, a specified product or category, and an approved delivery destination. A constraint such as “buy the cheapest acceptable option” still requires a definition of what counts as acceptable; otherwise the agent may optimize price by changing a feature you care about.
AP2 also allows a merchant to require renewed user confirmation when fulfillment is uncertain. An agent’s prior authority therefore does not guarantee that every later change can be completed without another approval request. Read the new request rather than treating it as a duplicate prompt.

AP2’s model is a protocol design distinction, not proof that every consumer shopping agent implements the same controls. Check the service’s own explanation of when it asks for confirmation and what limits it enforces.
What information should a trustworthy checkout screen display?
A trustworthy screen should expose the merchant’s current checkout state rather than hide material details behind an agent’s summary. The checkout specification’s data model is a useful minimum for judging whether the presentation is complete.
| Data group | Details to look for | Review question |
|---|---|---|
| Line items | Names, identifiers or variants, unit prices, quantities, and line totals | Does every line correspond to something you asked for? |
| Adjustments | Taxes, shipping, discounts, fees, and their effect on the total | Can you see why the final amount differs from the initial estimate? |
| Fulfillment | Destination address, available options, and the selected option’s cost | Will the order arrive where and how you expect? |
| Payment | Selected payment method and any required authentication | Is the funding source recognizable and intentional? |
| Order state | Current totals and the merchant’s response after cart changes | Did the values refresh after you changed an item, address, shipping option, or discount? |
The merchant system, rather than the language model’s recollection, should be the source of the authoritative cart and order state. If a displayed total does not update after a change, close the review and reopen the checkout or contact the service before approving.
What happens if the price changes or an item goes out of stock?
Do not assume one agent’s price-lock or stock policy applies to another. Google’s help page for Agentic checkout says the purchase proceeds only when the final price is the same as or lower than the total you confirmed. If the final price rises, Google says the purchase does not go through and you are not charged. The page also lists stock-outs and significant price changes as reasons an attempt can fail.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That behavior is specific to Google’s feature. Other services may pause for approval, rebuild the cart, substitute an item, or report a failure under their own rules. Before relying on an autonomous purchase, find the service’s documented behavior for price increases, unavailable inventory, changed shipping costs, and expired discounts.
When the total is lower
A lower total is not automatically a reason to skip the review. Check whether the decrease came from a legitimate discount or from a changed item, quantity, delivery option, or merchant. The product and fulfillment details still need to match your authorization.

When the total is higher
Do not approve a higher total merely because the difference is small. Decide whether the new amount remains within your spending limit and whether the service explicitly asks for renewed consent. If there is no clear approval step, cancel the attempt and start a new checkout after confirming the current values.
When inventory changes
Review any proposed substitution line by line. A replacement can differ in model, capacity, compatibility, warranty or seller even when the name sounds similar. If no substitute meets the original requirement, let the transaction fail rather than authorizing an unsuitable item.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11How can I tell that the approval control is safe to use?
Approve on the service’s trusted surface—the screen or flow intended to obtain informed consent—not through an unverified link, an emailed request that bypasses the cart, or a conversational instruction to disclose payment credentials. AP2 describes a trusted surface for collecting consent and signed checkout or payment mandates.
Check the payment method immediately before approval, even if you selected it earlier. Wallets and merchant checkouts can remember a different default after an account change. Complete any normal authentication prompt, but do not enter a one-time code into a page whose address or context you cannot verify.
AP2 states that role validation should occur in deterministic code. That is a protocol design principle: it means an implementation should not let a model’s text alone decide whether an action is authorized. It is not evidence that every product has implemented that safeguard, so evaluate the controls the particular service actually exposes.
What should I do if the order is wrong, canceled, or never delivered?
Keep the merchant’s confirmation and support information as soon as the order is placed. Google’s Agentic checkout help directs customers to the merchant for a wrong-item purchase, cancellation or return request, and delayed or undelivered order. The merchant is also the party that can usually see fulfillment and shipment records.

- Locate the order record. Use the order ID, confirmation email, merchant name, amount and delivery address to identify the transaction.
- Contact the merchant through its published support channel. State whether the issue is a wrong item, cancellation, return, missing delivery or another fulfillment problem.
- Describe any agent substitution or price change. Include the cart details you approved and the item that arrived, if different.
- Follow the merchant’s return or cancellation instructions. Do not assume that closing the agent conversation cancels the merchant order.
- Escalate through the payment provider only when appropriate. A payment dispute is not a substitute for first checking the merchant’s stated process, and eligibility depends on the payment method and applicable law.
The agent may have initiated the transaction, but the merchant’s order system controls shipping, returns and fulfillment status. Preserve both the agent’s confirmation and the merchant’s receipt so the two records can be matched.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I compare two AI shopping agents before choosing one?
Compare the controls around approval and recovery, not just how conversationally the agent searches. The available official material does not establish a complete cross-provider feature matrix, so ask each service these questions directly.
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | What a strong answer identifies |
|---|---|---|
| Approval model | Do I approve every closed checkout, or can the agent buy under saved constraints? | Whether the service supports human-present approval, autonomous constraints, or both. |
| Checkout visibility | Which line items, totals, fees, address, delivery option and payment details appear before approval? | A complete, current cart rather than an abbreviated chat summary. |
| Change handling | What happens when price, stock, tax, shipping or discounts change? | Whether the service stops, requests approval, substitutes, or fails. |
| Authentication | Where is consent collected and how is the payment method verified? | A recognizable trusted surface and an explicit confirmation action. |
| After-sales support | Who handles wrong items, cancellation, returns and delivery problems? | The merchant contact path and the records you should retain. |
| Availability | Where, in which language, with which merchants and payment methods does it work? | Current geographic, language, merchant and account limits instead of a global assumption. |
These questions map to distinctions in the AP2 specification and its overview. They help you assess a service even when it does not use AP2 terminology.
Where is Google’s Agentic checkout available?
Google’s help page describes Agentic checkout as a limited feature available in the United States and Australia, in English, and with select merchants that accept Google Pay. Availability is volatile: account eligibility, merchant participation, language support and payment methods can change. Check the current Google Pay Help page at the time of purchase rather than treating those limits as permanent.
Geographic availability also affects which consumer-protection rules and merchant processes apply. A feature being visible in an app does not mean every merchant, product category or payment instrument supports autonomous checkout.
What do government guidance and protocols say about responsibility?
The UK government’s Agentic AI and consumers publication describes consumer-facing authority as limited in current deployments and notes that human escalation remains common. Early shopping agents may search, compare and initiate simple actions with confirmation; that description should not be read as a promise that every agent can complete a purchase safely without supervision.
Best Value
The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s guidance on using AI agents says businesses remain responsible when an AI agent they use does something illegal. That is business-facing UK guidance, not a universal statement of consumer rights or liability in every country. Your local law, the merchant’s terms and the payment method’s rules can differ.
Neither the protocols nor the support pages establish a general error rate for AI shopping checkout or a universal guarantee that an agent will detect every mistake. Treat the review as a control you perform, not as a substitute for merchant terms or legal protections.
What is the shortest safe review when I am in a hurry?
Use a deliberate pause before the final approval action. Read the item and quantity, confirm the merchant, expand the full total, verify the destination and delivery option, check the payment method, and compare the cart with your authorization. If a value is missing, stale, substituted or outside your limit, do not click the approval control. Save the confirmation immediately after a successful order.
This pause is useful even in a human-absent setup. Constraints reduce the number of decisions an agent can make, but they do not tell you whether the service interpreted a product requirement or substitution the way you intended. A visible, current checkout remains the clearest point to catch that mismatch.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI shopping agent buy while I am away from my device?
Some systems support an autonomous, human-absent flow based on constraints approved in advance, while others require approval of each closed checkout. An agent may still stop and request fresh confirmation when a merchant cannot reliably fulfill the constrained order.
Does a lower final price mean I can skip reviewing the cart?
No. A lower amount can result from a discount, but it can also reflect a changed item, quantity, seller or delivery option. Confirm that the contents and fulfillment still match your request before approving.

Start with the merchant shown on the order confirmation, using the order ID and the merchant’s published support channel. The agent initiated the purchase, but the merchant handles corrections, cancellations, returns and delivery records.
Are checkout-agent rules the same in every country?
No. Feature availability, merchant participation, language, payment methods and consumer-law remedies vary by jurisdiction and service. Official UK guidance, for example, addresses businesses using agents and should not be treated as a worldwide rule for individual shoppers.
