Restrict an AI agent by treating it as its own auditable identity, denying access by default, and granting only the tools, data, operations, resources, and time window required for a specific task. Use short-lived credentials retrieved at runtime, isolate the agent from sensitive environments, and put independent approval in front of consequential actions. Then log what the agent actually did and rehearse how to revoke its access.
This is not just a matter of limiting what an agent can say. An agent that can call tools may read files, query services, change records, or trigger actions. Its permissions should therefore be designed and reviewed like those of a separately owned service principal—not inherited casually from the person who launched it.

What does least privilege mean for an AI agent?
Least privilege means giving an agent only the access necessary for its assigned task, and limiting that access by both scope and duration. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security puts the principle plainly: assign only the minimal rights necessary for the agent’s task. In practice, that means controlling several dimensions at once rather than relying on a single broad role.
- Identity: which agent or workload is acting, and who owns it?
- Resources: which tenant, subscription, workspace, repository, or records can it reach?
- Data: which collections, sensitivity labels, or fields can it read or change?
- Operations: can it read, write, export, administer, deploy, or delete?
- Tools and parameters: which functions may it call, and with what allowed inputs?
- Time: when does access expire, and how quickly can it be revoked?
A permission set can be narrow in one dimension and dangerously broad in another. For example, “read-only” access to every record in a company is still a wide data boundary; a short-lived credential with administrator rights is still high impact while it is valid. Design the boundaries together and confirm the agent’s effective permissions, not just the role name shown in a configuration screen.

Why should an agent have its own identity?
Give each agent a dedicated, attributable identity with a named owner, purpose, and approver. Do not reuse a developer’s personal credentials or a shared administrator account: those choices make it harder to determine which actions came from the agent and to disable the agent without disrupting a person or another workload.
OWASP’s AI Agent and MCP Security guidance recommends a distinct service account, GitHub App, or bot user so actions can be attributed and revoked independently. Microsoft Learn likewise recommends a unique, dedicated agent identity with a named owner or sponsor and approver. These are examples of identity patterns, not a requirement to use one particular platform.
Record ownership and lifecycle
For each identity, document its accountable owner, sponsor, task purpose, approver, and lifecycle state. Define who can authorize changes and who is responsible for disabling it when the workflow ends or its use changes. An identity without an owner is difficult to review and easy to leave active after the original task is no longer needed.
Preserve delegation in the audit trail
When a person asks an agent to act, record both the agent identity and the initiating user. The agent is the technical actor, while the user supplies the delegation context. Keeping both in the audit record helps distinguish an agent’s own scheduled work from an action performed on behalf of a particular person.
How do I scope an agent’s permissions to a task?
Define the task in terms of the specific resources, data, operations, and boundaries the agent needs. Prefer small task-based roles over general-purpose access, and separate reading from writing when practical.
Write the task boundary before granting access
Describe the allowed outcome in concrete terms, such as “read labeled documents and summarize approved records” or “create a draft ticket.” Then specify the permitted resource boundary—such as one tenant, subscription, workspace, or repository—and the data boundary, such as an approved collection or sensitivity label. State whether the agent may only read, or may also create, update, export, or administer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft recommends task-based roles, narrow resource and data scopes, and explicit tool or action allowlists. A role that says “support assistant” is not sufficiently specific on its own: the permissions behind it should make clear which records and operations are in scope.

Keep reading and changing separate where possible
An agent that only needs to summarize records does not need write permission to those records. Where the workflow needs multiple stages, consider separate identities or roles for reading source material and creating an output. This makes accidental changes less likely and makes the required authority easier to review.
Do not expand access simply because a future task might need it. If the workflow changes, review the new task and grant the additional scope deliberately rather than turning a narrow identity into a permanent catch-all.
How should I limit the tools an agent can call?
Expose only approved tools and actions through a deny-by-default policy. Allow specific operations and parameter ranges for the task; do not give an agent unrestricted shell, network, or administrative capability when a narrower tool will do.
Use an explicit, reviewable allowlist
Maintain a version-controlled manifest of the tools the agent may use, their permitted actions, and relevant input constraints. For a coding workflow, for example, allow access to the required repository paths and test commands while denying secret files, SSH material, unrestricted network commands, privilege changes, and production pushes unless separately approved. The exact allowlist depends on the task; the important control is that it is explicit, reviewable, and no broader than necessary.
Apply the same approach to API tools. An agent that needs to retrieve a status may not need a general-purpose API client able to update or delete the underlying resource. Where possible, expose a narrow operation rather than a broad endpoint or credential that can perform unrelated actions.
Validate parameters, not just tool names
A permitted tool can still be misused if its inputs are unconstrained. Check the target resource, operation, and normalized parameters against policy before execution. For example, an approval for one target should not silently authorize a different target passed in a later call. Make the policy decision on the action that will actually run, not just on the tool’s label.
How can I give an agent scoped credentials?
Prefer short-lived credentials issued for a specific identity, audience, resource, and set of operations. Retrieve secrets at runtime from a secrets manager rather than embedding them in prompts, source code, configuration files, or long-lived agent memory.

Choose a temporary credential pattern
Depending on the environment, suitable patterns can include OIDC, workload identity federation, OAuth client credentials, signed tokens, or temporary cloud credentials. The specific mechanism varies, but the goal is the same: avoid handing the agent a durable human credential or a long-lived secret with broad authority.
Canadian and AWS guidance both support ephemeral or short-lived credentials, runtime retrieval, and automatic expiry or revocation. AWS Prescriptive Guidance says to assign agents running on AgentCore Runtime IAM roles that provide the minimum permissions required for their functions. That is guidance for that AWS runtime context, not a claim that the same product or configuration fits every deployment.
Constrain and manage the credential
Set the credential’s expiration, audience, resource scope, and permitted operations to match the task. Keep any client secret in a secrets manager and retrieve it only when needed. Arrange for expiry or revocation when the task completes, and rotate or revoke credentials promptly after an incident or change in trust.
Short lifetime reduces the period in which a leaked credential remains useful; it does not replace narrow scope. A temporary credential that can administer an entire production environment is still an excessive grant. Check both its expiry and what it can do before issuing it.

When should an agent need human approval?
Require fresh, independent approval for irreversible, financial, administrative, externally visible, or production-impacting actions. The agent can propose an action, but a separate policy or execution service should validate whether the action is authorized before carrying it out.
Put approval around consequential operations
Examples include deleting data, exporting records, making payments, changing privileges, deploying to production, or taking another action that is hard to reverse. Approval should apply to the specific action and target, not to a broad class of future actions without a clear boundary.
Microsoft’s guidance supports just-in-time or approval-based elevation for high-impact operations. A standing administrator role is not an equivalent safeguard: it leaves authority available even when no approved task requires it.

Validate the action independently
Before execution, the policy or execution service should check the actor, tool, target, normalized parameters, scope, approval state, timestamp, and expiry. Require a fresh step-up approval where appropriate. If the policy service cannot make a decision, or the audit system cannot record the action, fail closed rather than proceeding without the control.
Recommended Free Tools
Approval does not make an overly broad identity safe. Keep the underlying permissions narrow, and have the independent check confirm that the approved request matches the exact action being attempted.
How do I isolate an agent from secrets and unsafe environments?
Run the agent in a disposable, restricted environment without production credentials or unnecessary access to the host. Limit filesystem mounts and outbound network access to what the task requires, and treat content the agent can read as a possible route for instruction injection or data exfiltration.
Use disposable execution and restricted mounts
A sandboxed container, development container, or virtual machine can reduce the impact of a compromised or misdirected agent. Avoid mounting a user’s home directory or exposing unrelated files. Do not place production credentials in the runtime unless the task specifically requires them and the credential is scoped accordingly.
Control network egress and untrusted inputs
Restrict outbound connections to the domains needed for the workflow instead of allowing unrestricted network access. Web pages, issues, documents, tool descriptions, environment variables, and shell history can all carry malicious instructions or sensitive information. Treat these sources as untrusted input; the agent should not gain authority simply because content it reads asks it to take an action.

OWASP and Canadian guidance also identify controls such as encryption, rate limiting, and sanitization. Use them as part of the runtime’s defense in depth, alongside identity and access controls—not as substitutes for limiting what the agent can reach.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I log and test?
Log enough information to reconstruct who or what acted, under whose delegation, with what authority, and on which target. Then rehearse disabling access rather than assuming that a revoke button or token expiry will work as intended.
Best Value
Capture the effective action context
For each relevant tool call, record the agent identity, owner, role, effective scope, tool, action, target resource, correlation ID, and delegated user when there is one. Include the approval context for consequential operations. Logs should make it possible to relate an action to the identity and authority that permitted it, rather than merely showing that a generic service account made a request.
Rehearse containment
Test the operational path for disabling the identity, invalidating active tokens, rotating credentials, removing stale permissions, and activating a kill switch. Confirm that the agent cannot continue acting through another credential or a still-valid session after the identity is disabled. Re-review access whenever the workflow, tools, data, or deployment environment changes.

Measure the controls in your own deployment: whether the expected actions are allowed, out-of-scope actions are denied, logs are complete, and revocation works under realistic conditions.
How do I choose an implementation approach?
Compare implementations by the controls they provide and the effort required to operate them, not by the name of an identity product or agent framework. A configuration is only useful if it can enforce the boundaries your task needs and your team can monitor and revoke it.
| Decision area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Identity | Is each agent uniquely identifiable, owned, and independently revocable? |
| Scope | Can access be limited by resource, data, operation, and time? |
| Credentials | How long do credentials last, and how quickly can they be revoked? |
| Tool policy | Can you allow specific tools and parameters instead of granting broad execution? |
| Isolation | Can you restrict mounts, network egress, and exposure to host or production secrets? |
| Approval | Can a separate control validate high-impact actions and require fresh approval? |
| Audit | Do logs capture identity, owner, effective scope, action, target, correlation ID, and delegating user? |
| Operations | Can the team test revocation, token invalidation, rotation, stale-access removal, and emergency shutdown? |
Cloud and on-premises environments may offer different identity, secrets, isolation, and policy mechanisms. The comparison should therefore account for operational effort as well as control coverage. Choose the implementation that can enforce the required boundaries in the environment where the agent runs, and test the failure and revocation paths before relying on it.
What is a practical rollout sequence?
Start with a narrow workflow and verify each boundary before adding autonomy or impact. This sequence keeps identity, scope, execution, approval, and response controls connected.
- Define one task. Write down its permitted outcome, data, resources, operations, tools, and duration.
- Create a dedicated identity. Assign a named owner, sponsor, purpose, approver, and lifecycle state. Bind the initiating user to agent actions in delegated workflows.
- Grant a task-sized role. Limit its resource and data scope; keep read and write permissions separate where practical.
- Build the tool allowlist. Specify allowed actions and parameters, deny unrelated commands and sensitive paths, and keep the policy version-controlled.
- Issue temporary credentials. Retrieve them at runtime, constrain audience, resource, operations, and expiry, and plan how to revoke them.
- Isolate execution. Use disposable compute, restricted mounts, no unnecessary production credentials, and limited outbound connectivity.
- Add approval gates. Require independent policy validation and fresh approval for high-impact actions; fail closed if policy or audit controls are unavailable.
- Exercise the controls. Confirm allowed actions work, out-of-scope actions are denied, audit fields are present, and disablement and token invalidation stop further activity.
- Review when things change. Reassess permissions when the task, tools, data, or environment changes, and remove access that is no longer needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should an AI agent use a person’s login or API token?
No. A dedicated service identity makes the agent’s actions attributable and lets an operator disable the agent without changing a person’s account. If a workflow is delegated by a person, preserve that user’s identity separately in the audit context.
Can prompt instructions prevent an agent from accessing secrets?
Instructions alone do not enforce access boundaries. Deny access to secret files and unnecessary network destinations at the runtime and tool-policy layers, and keep credentials out of prompts and exposed host paths.
What should happen if the authorization or audit service is unavailable?
For high-impact actions, fail closed: do not execute when the policy decision or required audit record cannot be made. Test this failure behavior deliberately so a dependency outage cannot silently bypass the intended gate.
How often should I review an agent’s permissions?
Review access whenever its workflow, tools, data, or deployment environment changes, and remove stale grants. The cited guidance does not establish a universal review interval, so set one appropriate to your organization’s risk and operational requirements.
