“API DLL” is not the name of one Windows file, so the correct fix depends on the exact filename, the full error message, the program that fails, and your Windows version and architecture. Names beginning api-ms-win-crt- commonly indicate a Universal C Runtime problem; names beginning api-ms-win-core- can be API-set contracts or signs that the application targets a newer Windows API. Capture those details first, then use Windows Update or an official Microsoft runtime, repair or reinstall the affected application, and verify operating-system compatibility. Do not download a loose DLL or copy one into System32.
What does “API DLL” mean?
Windows uses dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) to provide shared functions. An application can call those functions instead of carrying a separate copy of every routine. “API DLL” is a troubleshooting shorthand, not a precise filename or diagnosis.

Many messages show an API-set contract such as api-ms-win-core-*.dll. API-set names let Windows map a group of functions to the system component that implements them. They are not always ordinary standalone files that can be downloaded. Other messages name Universal C Runtime contracts such as api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll, an application DLL, a driver, or a dependency of the named module.
The same wording can therefore result from several different conditions:

- A missing or incompletely updated Universal C Runtime on an older Windows installation.
- An application built for a newer Windows baseline than the computer supports.
- A missing transitive dependency: the named DLL exists, but one of the libraries it needs does not load.
- A damaged, quarantined, or incompletely deployed application file.
- A 32-bit/64-bit mismatch or a missing Visual C++ runtime required by the application.
National Instruments describes this class of deployment failure this way: “This error usually happens when the software calling the LabWindows/CVI-compiled DLL is not able to load a missing DLL or missing dependencies of the DLL on the deployment system.” That distinction is why replacing one filename blindly often fails.
How do I capture the exact API DLL failure?
Write down the complete message before changing files. The details determine which branch of the repair process is safe.
- Copy the full text. Record the exact name, including every hyphen, number, and suffix. Note whether the message says “The code execution cannot proceed,” “The specified module could not be found,” or something similar.
- Identify the executable. Note the program’s name and the path shown in its shortcut or error dialog. A launcher, plug-in, service, and main application can require different runtimes.
- Check Windows. Press
Windows key + R, enterwinver, and record the edition and build. In Settings, open System > About and note System type. - Check application architecture. Look in the publisher’s requirements for x86 (32-bit), x64 (64-bit), or ARM64. A 32-bit application can need the x86 runtime even on 64-bit Windows.
- Record when it started. An error that began after a Windows update, application update, driver change, restore, or antivirus quarantine points to a different cause than one present immediately after installation.
- Check whether other programs fail. Try two unrelated applications. One failing program suggests deployment or compatibility; several unrelated failures make damaged Windows components more plausible.
If the message says “the specified module could not be found,” do not assume the displayed API-set file itself is absent. Windows may have found that file but failed to load a dependency beneath it.
Which API DLL family is named in the message?
Use the filename as a routing clue, not as proof. The table below shows the safest first action for each common family.
| Filename or symptom | Most useful first interpretation | First action |
|---|---|---|
api-ms-win-crt-*, including api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll |
Universal C Runtime may be missing or not fully updated | Install all applicable Windows updates, restart, then use Microsoft’s official Universal C Runtime guidance or the application publisher’s supported runtime package |
api-ms-win-core-* |
API-set contract, unsupported Windows API, or another dependency that failed | Check the application’s minimum Windows version and complete dependency chain; do not download a same-named DLL |
| A named application DLL | Incomplete deployment, quarantine, permissions, or a missing dependency | Repair or reinstall from the publisher and verify its required runtimes and drivers |
| A driver, graphics, audio, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB, or printer component | Driver package or hardware software problem | Install the manufacturer’s supported driver for the exact Windows edition and architecture |
| Several unrelated programs fail | Windows component damage, servicing failure, or a broad update problem is more likely | Run Windows servicing checks after protecting personal data and reviewing recent updates |
How do I fix an api-ms-win-crt-*.dll error?
These names commonly point to the Universal C Runtime. Update Windows first; only then use an official Microsoft runtime package if the system is an older supported release that still lacks the component.
1. Install every applicable Windows update
- Open Settings > Windows Update (or Update & Security > Windows Update on older Windows 10 builds).
- Select Check for updates, install quality, servicing-stack, and optional runtime updates offered for your release, and restart when prompted.
- Check again after the restart. A partially updated system can continue to report the same contract until the servicing process completes.
2. Use the official Universal C Runtime route when required
On older supported Windows versions, follow Microsoft’s Universal C Runtime package instructions or the Microsoft Download Center route for that exact release and architecture. Download only the package intended for your version of Windows; do not extract a single DLL from an unrelated computer. Python’s Windows FAQ gives the same general guidance for api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll: Windows 8.1 or earlier can show the error when required updates are missing, so the operating system must be supported and up to date.

3. Check the application’s C and C++ runtime requirement
If the publisher specifies a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable, install the architecture it lists. Keep x86 and x64 requirements separate: installing only the x64 package does not satisfy a 32-bit application. Use the publisher’s installer or Microsoft’s supported package, then restart and test the program.
4. Repair the application after the runtime is present
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the program, choose Advanced options when available, and select Repair. If no repair option exists, run the original installer and choose Repair, or uninstall and reinstall from the publisher after backing up the application’s data.
Why does Windows say an api-ms-win-core-*.dll file is missing?
An api-ms-win-core-* name is often an API-set contract rather than a file you should copy into a system directory. The underlying problem may be that the application calls an API unavailable on your Windows version or that a different dependency failed first.
Check the application’s minimum Windows version
Read the publisher’s requirements and release notes for the exact build. Microsoft’s C++ porting guidance notes that Windows APIs and data types have been added, changed, removed, or superseded over time, and developers choose a minimum Windows version to support. An application compiled against a newer API surface may require a newer supported Windows release or an older build of the application.
Try a compatible application build
If the publisher offers a legacy or older release for your Windows version, install that release from the publisher and keep its installer and license information. Compatibility mode can help with some older programs, but it cannot create an API that the operating system does not provide.
Inspect the complete dependency chain
Read the application’s deployment notes for required runtimes, plug-ins, drivers, and redistributables. Confirm that each component matches the program’s architecture and that security software has not quarantined one. If the program is enterprise software, ask its administrator or publisher for the supported dependency list rather than substituting files from another machine.

How do I repair an API DLL error affecting only one program?
When one application fails while unrelated programs work, repair its deployment before modifying Windows. This pattern usually indicates an application file, dependency, permission, driver, or compatibility issue.
- Run the application’s repair option. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps or the original installer.
- Reinstall from the publisher. Download the installer again from the official publisher, uninstall the existing copy if its documentation requires that order, and restart before reinstalling.
- Verify required components. Install the exact Visual C++ runtime, .NET component, driver, plug-in, or hardware software named in the application requirements.
- Check permissions. Confirm that your account can read the application folder and that the program is not being launched from a disconnected network or removable drive.
- Review quarantine history. If antivirus software removed a legitimate dependency, restore it only after confirming the file’s publisher and reinstall the application if its integrity is uncertain. A repair utility does not replace antivirus protection.
- Test a clean user profile. A new local Windows account can reveal whether per-user settings or a damaged profile is preventing the program from loading. Do not delete the original profile until its data is backed up.
If the error started immediately after an application update, check whether the publisher has withdrawn that build or posted a compatibility advisory. Rolling back to a publisher-supported version is safer than copying a DLL from another installation.

What should I do when several programs show API DLL errors?
Multiple unrelated failures make damaged or incomplete Windows components more likely. Use built-in servicing tools from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt, and allow each command to finish.
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run the servicing repair command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Restart when it completes. Then open an elevated terminal again and run:
sfc /scannow
Restart a second time and retry the affected applications. If DISM or System File Checker reports that it cannot repair files, record the exact result, install pending Windows updates, and contact qualified support rather than replacing individual system DLLs.
For a failure that began after a known update, review Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Uninstalling a recent update is a last resort for a documented regression; create a backup and confirm that the update is actually related before doing so.

Can a 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch cause an API DLL error?
Yes. Windows can run 32-bit applications on 64-bit editions, but the application still needs dependencies built for its own architecture. A 32-bit program generally requires x86 redistributables and plug-ins; a 64-bit program requires x64 versions.
- Install the architecture named by the application, not merely the architecture of Windows.
- Do not mix 32-bit and 64-bit plug-ins in the same application.
- For a driver, use the package specifically labeled for your Windows edition and processor architecture.
- If the publisher offers both builds, choose the one matching the program and its plug-ins.
Architecture is separate from API availability. A correctly matched x64 runtime cannot make a newer Windows API appear on an older operating system.
Should I download the missing API DLL from a website?
No. Random DLL-download sites can provide an altered, incompatible, incorrectly versioned, or malware-laden file. Copying it into System32 or the application folder can create new loader errors and makes later servicing harder.
Use this trust order instead:
- Windows Update and built-in Windows servicing.
- An official Microsoft runtime or operating-system package for your exact Windows release and architecture.
- The application publisher’s signed installer, repair option, or supported redistributable.
- Qualified support that can identify the dependency and verify file provenance.
Do not register an API-set contract manually with regsvr32. API-set contracts are not ordinary ActiveX libraries, and registration will not add a missing Windows API.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen is a Windows upgrade the right solution?
Upgrade only after confirming that the application requires a newer supported Windows environment. Installation media can provide a legitimate path to a compatible operating system, but it cannot repair every API DLL message.
- Check the application’s documented minimum Windows version and whether your hardware meets it.
- Back up personal files and verify that critical applications, drivers, and peripherals support the target release.
- Confirm activation, licensing, encryption-recovery keys, and installation media before changing the operating system.
- Plan for application data migration and make sure you can reinstall required runtimes.
If the application has no build compatible with your current Windows version and the API it needs is unavailable there, a supported Windows upgrade or a different application build is more realistic than a loose DLL replacement.

Can I copy the API DLL from another Windows PC?
It is not a reliable repair because Windows builds, architectures, servicing levels, and API implementations differ. A copied file can be the wrong version or introduce a security risk; use Windows servicing or an official package for the affected system instead.
Why does the error appear only when I launch a game or plug-in?
Games and plug-ins often ship their own launchers and have separate runtime, graphics-driver, and architecture requirements. Check the publisher’s prerequisites and repair the game installation before changing Windows system files.
Will compatibility mode create a missing Windows API?
No. Compatibility mode changes selected application behaviors, but it cannot add an API that the installed Windows release does not implement. Use a supported application build or operating-system version when the required API is unavailable.
What information should I give technical support?
Provide the complete error text, exact DLL or API-set name, executable path, Windows edition and build, application version, architecture, and the first date the failure occurred. Include results from Windows Update, DISM, or SFC and mention any recent update, reinstall, quarantine event, or driver change.
