Research an AI company by tracing the same chain every time: what it sells, how AI contributes to the business, whether that contribution produces durable revenue and cash, and what risks or dependencies could undermine it. Then compare the company with peers on consistent measures rather than treating AI claims, model demonstrations or market enthusiasm as evidence of investment quality.
A practical process is to govern the risks, map the business and technology, measure financial performance, and manage uncertainty in your assumptions. It works for public companies and private startups, but the available evidence differs: public filings are more standardized, while private-company information may be unaudited or incomplete.

What does it mean to research an AI company?
It means testing the connection between the company’s AI claims and its underlying economics. Identify what the company sells, who pays for it, what role AI plays in the product, and whether the company can deliver that product reliably and profitably. A compelling model or an “AI” label is not, on its own, evidence of a sound business or an attractive investment.
There is no single accepted definition of AI in issuer disclosures. The SEC Investor Advisory Committee’s December 4, 2025 recommendation describes inconsistent company statements and uneven disclosure practices. Before comparing companies, write down what you will count as AI-related activity—for example, AI as the main paid product, an AI feature inside a broader product, or conventional software marketed with AI language. Use that definition consistently.

Keep two questions separate throughout: Is this a credible business? and Is its current investment price justified by the business and its risks? Good products and revenue growth do not answer the second question by themselves.
How should I organize the investigation?
Use four passes—Govern, Map, Measure and Manage—to keep product claims, operating evidence and risk analysis connected. The framework below adapts the structure of NIST’s voluntary AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0), published January 26, 2023; it is a due-diligence aid, not a certification or investment score.

- Govern: Identify oversight, responsibilities, policies and risk controls.
- Map: Define the company, its economic engine, customers and AI dependencies.
- Measure: Test financial performance, customer value, technical claims and operational reliability.
- Manage: Assess the material risks, compare alternatives and make uncertainty visible in your valuation assumptions.
NIST describes its framework as voluntary, rights-preserving, sector-agnostic and use-case agnostic. Its AI Resource Center said in 2023 that more than 240 organizations contributed to its development. Those facts may make it a useful organizing structure; they do not show that a particular company follows it or that following it makes the company safe.
How do I establish what the company actually does?
Start with the legal and commercial entity, not its brand story. Establish whether it is publicly listed or privately financed, identify relevant subsidiaries, and distinguish the products and business segments that generate revenue. Then trace where AI sits in the offering and how the company charges for it.
Build a company and product map
- Entity and ownership: Record the legal company, listing or financing status, material subsidiaries and, where disclosed, the relationship between the entity and the product being promoted.
- Product and buyer: List what is sold, who uses it, who pays, and whether the buyer is a business, an individual or another organization.
- AI’s role: Classify each relevant offering as AI-native (AI is the central paid product), AI-enabled (AI is a feature in a broader product), or ordinary software with AI positioning but no clearly demonstrated paid AI function.
- Revenue mechanism: Note whether customers pay a recurring subscription, usage-based fees, a one-time contract, implementation charges or some combination.
- Evidence: For each claimed AI benefit, record the supporting product documentation, customer evidence, financial disclosure or technical evaluation—and what remains unverified.
This map prevents a common category error: treating all revenue of a company that uses AI as AI revenue. A large software business may add AI features without disclosing how much those features contribute to sales, margins or renewals. Mark that contribution as unknown rather than allocating a share of total revenue without evidence.

Which documents should I read for a public company?
Use primary company disclosures to establish what management has reported, then compare the narrative across documents. Start with the latest annual and quarterly filings, registration statements when relevant, earnings releases, earnings-call transcripts and investor presentations. An investor presentation can explain management’s strategy, but check its claims against filings and financial statements.

- Business description: Products, customers, segment definitions, sales channels, suppliers and stated AI strategy.
- Risk factors: AI-related dependencies, data and intellectual-property exposure, cybersecurity, regulation, third-party providers and risks to customers or operations.
- Management’s Discussion and Analysis (MD&A): Management’s explanation of revenue changes, costs, liquidity, capital needs and trends. Compare its explanations with the numbers that follow.
- Financial statements and notes: Revenue by segment, margins, cash flow, debt, capital spending, stock-based compensation, customer concentration when disclosed, and obligations that may not be obvious from the headline results.
- Earnings calls: Promises about adoption, customers, efficiency or product launches, checked against later disclosures and measurable operating results.
Reconcile the AI story with audited figures and cash requirements. If management presents AI as a major growth engine but reports no distinct AI revenue, explain that limitation in your analysis; do not convert a strategic claim into a reported financial result.
Disclosure prevalence is not evidence of business quality. A 2024 Skadden analysis reported that more than 40% of S&P 500 companies included AI disclosures in fiscal-2023 annual reports and more than 40% cited AI on Q2 2024 earnings calls. Those figures describe how often companies mentioned AI, not whether their claims were accurate, their products profitable or their shares attractively valued.
How can I tell whether AI revenue is durable?
Find out what customers pay for, whether they keep paying, and what it costs the company to deliver the service. Separate recurring revenue from pilots, implementation work and one-time contracts; then look for evidence that revenue can renew and scale without costs rising just as quickly.
Test revenue quality
- Recurring versus one-time: Identify subscriptions or repeat usage separately from pilot projects, setup fees and individual contracts. A paid pilot is evidence of a customer purchase, but not by itself evidence of renewal or broad adoption.
- Renewal and churn: Look for reported renewal, retention or churn evidence and its definition. If management does not disclose it, do not infer low churn from customer or booking announcements.
- Customer concentration: Check whether a small number of customers account for a substantial share of sales or depend on a single large contract. Concentration can make growth less durable if one buyer delays, renegotiates or leaves.
- Contract value and mix: Consider whether average contract value, usage, customer counts or deal sizes are reported consistently. Be wary of comparisons between bookings, pipeline, contract value and recognized revenue as if they were interchangeable.
- Gross margin: Track the trend and examine whether serving AI workloads brings inference, compute, cloud, implementation or support costs that pressure margins.
Useful evidence is time-based and comparable: the same metric, defined consistently, reported across periods. If a company changes metric definitions or emphasizes a new measure, document the change before drawing a trend line.

What financial measures matter most?
There is no single AI-specific financial ratio that determines quality. Read growth alongside profitability, cash needs, financing and dilution, and keep reported figures distinct from your own estimates.
| Measure | What to examine | Why it matters for an AI business |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue growth | Growth by segment and period; whether it comes from recurring sales, new customers, usage or one-off work. | Fast growth is less informative if the AI contribution is unclear or costs and cash needs rise faster. |
| Gross margin | Trend over time and any explanation of model, compute, cloud, delivery or support costs. | Growth can fail to translate into a stronger business if the cost to serve customers erodes margin. |
| Operating cash flow | Cash generated or consumed by operations and how it compares with reported earnings and growth. | Cash conversion helps show whether the business can fund operations from its own activity or needs outside capital. |
| Capital expenditure | Spending on infrastructure and other long-lived assets, and the company’s explanation of future needs. | Compute capacity and infrastructure plans can affect funding needs and the timing of cash generation. |
| Debt and liquidity | Debt, available cash and other disclosed funding needs alongside cash flow and spending plans. | Funding pressure can constrain a company before its product or market opportunity is fully realized. |
| Dilution and stock-based compensation | Changes in share count, equity compensation and the related disclosures. | Operating progress does not necessarily translate into the same per-share outcome when ownership is diluted. |
| Customer concentration and segment reporting | How revenue is grouped, which major customers or segments are disclosed, and whether definitions change. | Broad segment figures may obscure the scale or dependence of the AI-related business. |
For each measure, note the reporting period and whether it is a reported number or your own estimate. If company disclosures do not isolate AI revenue or costs, do not present an estimated AI contribution as a company-reported fact.
How do I assess an AI company’s technology and dependencies?
Map the full path from data to customer output rather than focusing only on whether the company owns a model. An AI product may depend on licensed models, open-source components, external cloud or chip suppliers, or a combination; each arrangement can create different costs, rights and operational risks.
Questions for the model stack
- Data rights: What data is used for training, fine-tuning, retrieval or customer-specific services, and what rights or permissions does the company have?
- Model rights and ownership: Does the company own the model, license it, adapt an open-source model or rely on another provider? What can it change or continue using if terms change?
- Delivery infrastructure: Which cloud, chip or inference providers are essential? Are there alternatives, and has the company described how it would respond to an outage or loss of access?
- Evaluation evidence: Ask what was tested, on which tasks, under what conditions and with what error rates or limitations. Look for reliability evaluations, red-team findings, security controls and incident history.
- Customer value: Determine whether the product improves a customer’s task in a way that is measured and relevant to purchase or renewal, not just impressive in a demonstration.
NIST’s Generative AI Profile, NIST AI 600-1, published July 26, 2024, is a cross-sector companion to AI RMF 1.0 and can help organize generative-AI risk questions. A benchmark result is one piece of evidence, not proof of production reliability, customer value or favorable economics. Ask how performance holds up in the company’s actual use case and what happens when the system is wrong.

What risks and governance controls should I check?
Look for documented responsibility, tested controls and clear allocation of risk—not just an AI policy or a claim that the company follows a framework. The more central AI is to the product or operations, the more important it is to understand how the company identifies, evaluates and responds to failures.

Use trustworthiness as an evidence checklist
NIST’s AI RMF describes characteristics that can structure this review. For each one, ask what evidence the company can provide:
- Valid and reliable: Are intended uses and performance limits defined, and is performance checked in conditions that resemble use?
- Safe: Are harmful outcomes considered and mitigated, including consequences of incorrect or unexpected outputs?
- Secure and resilient: Are security controls tested, and are there plans for disruptions, attacks or supplier failures?
- Accountable and transparent: Who owns AI decisions and incidents, and can the company explain relevant system behavior to affected customers?
- Explainable and interpretable: Can users understand enough about outputs and limitations to make informed decisions in the product’s context?
- Privacy-enhanced: How are personal or sensitive data protected, and what obligations follow from collecting, processing or retaining it?
- Fair, with harmful bias managed: Does the company evaluate disparate or harmful outcomes, and what process addresses problems it finds?
Also review intellectual-property ownership and indemnities, sector rules, data-protection obligations, model misuse, workforce effects, customer-contract liability and cybersecurity. Ask whether the board and management have documented oversight and whether controls are tested. The U.S. Treasury’s December 19, 2024 financial-services report highlights privacy, bias and third-party-provider risks in that sector; those examples are particularly relevant to financial services, not a complete risk list for every industry.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I spot AI-washing or inconsistent claims?
Treat marketing statements as hypotheses to verify. Compare what the company means by AI and what it says AI achieves across filings, product documentation, customer evidence, earnings calls and technical evaluations.
Recommended Free Tools
- Is the AI claim linked to a named product, customer problem or paid feature—or is it only a broad description of the company?
- Does management quantify a claimed outcome and explain the method, baseline or relevant conditions?
- Do customer references support the claimed use and results, rather than just confirming a partnership or trial?
- Are definitions and claimed benefits consistent across company materials and reporting periods?
- Does the company discuss corresponding costs, dependencies and risks with the same care as the opportunity?
Claims without a reasonable basis, quantified outcomes, customer evidence or consistent risk discussion merit further scrutiny. Inconsistent disclosures do not prove misconduct, but they weaken comparability and make it harder to judge what is actually being sold or earned.
How should I compare AI companies and value the investment?
Compare like with like and use the same axes for each company. A software provider selling subscriptions, a company charging by usage and a business that earns most of its money from implementation work may all use AI but have different revenue durability, cost structures and risks.
Best Value
| Comparison axis | Questions to record for each company |
|---|---|
| Growth quality and durability | What is recurring, what is one-time, and what evidence supports adoption and renewal? |
| Margins and compute costs | How are gross margins trending, and what is disclosed about inference, cloud, chip, implementation and support costs? |
| Cash runway and funding | What do operating cash flow, capital expenditure, debt and other stated funding needs imply about financial flexibility? |
| Dilution | How have share count and stock-based compensation changed, and what does that mean for per-share ownership? |
| Customer concentration | How dependent is the company on a few customers or contracts, based on disclosed information? |
| Data and model rights | What rights, licenses or supplier relationships are essential, and what fallback options are described? |
| Evaluation and controls | What reliability, security, privacy and red-team evidence is available, and what remains untested or undisclosed? |
| Regulatory and litigation exposure | Which obligations, potential disputes or liability allocations are relevant to the company’s sector and contracts? |
| Competitive moat and intensity | What durable advantage is supported by evidence—such as rights, customer relationships or product performance—and how readily might competitors offer alternatives? |
| Slower-adoption sensitivity | What happens to growth, costs, cash needs and valuation assumptions if adoption is slower, pricing is lower, renewals are delayed or model costs rise? |
For a simple sensitivity analysis, write down a base case and one or more less favorable cases. Change the assumptions that drive the business—adoption speed, pricing, renewals and model or compute costs—then examine the effect on revenue quality, margins, cash needs and the valuation you consider supportable. Label each assumption as management-reported, independently evidenced or estimated; do not give estimates the appearance of disclosed facts.
Private companies need the same scrutiny, but their figures may be unaudited, incomplete or defined differently from public-company measures. Record the source and date of each number, and treat missing information as uncertainty rather than proof that performance is either strong or weak. A high growth rate does not by itself offset weak cash conversion, fragile supply access or unsupported claims.
What should I write down before making a decision?
A short decision record makes it harder for a persuasive product demo or a fast-moving narrative to replace evidence. Keep the conclusion proportionate to what you could verify.
- The legal entity, products, customers and the definition you used for AI-related activity.
- Which claims have direct financial, customer or technical support—and which remain unverified.
- The trend in growth, gross margin, cash flow, spending, debt, dilution and concentration, with the period and source for each figure.
- The model, data, infrastructure and supplier dependencies, plus known alternatives or fallback options.
- The material governance, privacy, security, bias, legal and contractual risks, and evidence that controls are tested.
- Your base and downside assumptions, including slower adoption, lower pricing, higher model costs and delayed renewals.
- What new disclosure or event would change your view, and when you will revisit dated assumptions.
This is a research process, not a buy-or-sell signal. A company can have a useful product and still be a poor investment at a particular price; conversely, incomplete disclosure may leave too little evidence to reach a confident conclusion.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if a company does not break out AI revenue in its filings?
Treat AI revenue as undisclosed, not as a percentage you can reliably infer from total company sales. You can still assess the broader business and note any specific AI-related customer or product evidence, but keep that evidence separate from reported revenue.
Do AI companies need to own their own models to have a competitive advantage?
Not necessarily: the relevant question is whether the company has a defensible way to deliver customer value, given its model and data rights, supplier arrangements, product integration and costs. Model ownership alone does not establish that customers will stay or that the economics will work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Revisit company-specific figures when new financial disclosures appear and reassess product, supplier and risk assumptions when the company reports material changes. Keep the date beside each fact so older disclosures are not mistaken for current conditions.
