Microsoft Teams can let one person take over another person’s mouse and keyboard while they share their screen. That’s the “request control” flow—useful for troubleshooting, guided walkthroughs, and real-time help.
This guide covers what you need before the feature works, the exact clicks for requesting control and for granting it, and the most common reasons it fails.

What Request Control Means in Teams
When someone shares their screen in a Teams meeting, other participants may be able to request control of the shared content. If the presenter approves, the requester can operate the shared mouse/keyboard as if they were at the presenter’s device.
The key point: you don’t “turn on” request control—you request it, and the presenter has to approve it.

Prerequisites and When Request Control Is Available
Request Control isn’t guaranteed in every meeting or scenario. Before you spend time troubleshooting, confirm these conditions:
- Someone is actively sharing their screen (or an app) in the meeting.
- You’re in the same meeting and have joined as an attendee (not a view-only participant, depending on meeting settings).
- Your Teams client supports the control feature (typically newer Microsoft Teams desktop builds and modern browsers).
- The presenter allows control when you request it. If they don’t approve, you can’t interact with the shared content.
- Browser/session limits may apply. Some environments restrict control to prevent security or accidental input.
If you don’t see the request option at all, the problem is usually one of permissions, client support, or the presenter not initiating the sharing type that allows control.

- Join the meeting in Microsoft Teams.
- Wait for the presenter to start sharing their screen or an app.
- On your screen, look for the shared content toolbar or participant controls near the top of the shared view.
- Select Request control.
- Confirm if Teams prompts you with a permission/confirmation dialog.
- The presenter will receive an approval prompt. When they grant it, your mouse and keyboard input will take effect on the shared content.
If you requested control and nothing happens, try sending a quick message in the meeting chat like “I requested control—can you approve it?” Presenters sometimes miss the prompt.
Grant Control as the Presenter (You’re Sharing)
As the person sharing, you’re the gatekeeper. To let someone take control, follow this process.
- Start sharing your screen/app in the meeting.
- When a participant requests control, look for the approval prompt (it typically appears near the shared screen controls or as a dialog).
- Select Give control (or the equivalent approval option).
- Confirm any follow-up prompt.
- To stop control later, use the shared-screen control options and select Stop control (wording can vary by client version).
If you’re seeing a request but can’t approve, your Teams client might be out of date or you may be sharing in a mode that limits control.

Request Control When You’re Sharing an App vs. Your Entire Screen
Teams treats “share screen” and “share app window” differently. In most meetings, both support control approval, but behavior can vary.

- Sharing your entire desktop: control applies across the desktop area shown, which can include multiple windows.
If you’re troubleshooting someone, sharing the specific app window usually reduces accidental clicks and makes the control experience more predictable.
Platform-Specific Steps (Windows, macOS, Web, iPhone/iPad)
The control request interface is consistent in concept, but the buttons and availability can vary by platform and client version.
Windows (Microsoft Teams desktop app)
On Windows, the Request control button is usually visible on the shared screen toolbar.
- Open the meeting in the Teams desktop app.
- Ensure someone has started sharing.
- On the shared content, select Request control.
- Wait for the presenter’s Give control approval.
macOS (Microsoft Teams desktop app)
macOS follows the same request/approve model. You may need to move the cursor over the shared view to reveal the toolbar.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Join the meeting in the Teams desktop app.
- Wait for an active screen share.
- Hover around the shared view controls to find Request control.
- Confirm the request and wait for approval.
Web (Teams in a supported browser)
In the web client, the feature may still work, but availability depends on your browser, permissions, and Teams configuration.

- Look for Request control within the shared view.
- If you can’t request control, ask the presenter to switch to the Teams desktop app or use the meeting app on your device.
iPhone and iPad (Teams mobile app)
On mobile, screen-sharing control can be limited. In many cases, mobile users can view the shared screen but can’t request control depending on the meeting and client build.
- Open the meeting in the Teams iOS app.
- Watch for an option like Request control near the shared content.
- If the option is missing, ask the presenter to guide you by voice or try joining from a desktop browser/app.
Troubleshooting: Request Control Button Missing or Control Not Working
If you can’t request control, don’t assume it’s your mistake. Start with the most common causes and work downward.
1) Confirm you’re looking at the active shared view
The request option appears only for the shared content. If you’re viewing a participant tile without the screen share overlay, try selecting the shared screen area.
2) Ask the presenter to re-share
Sometimes control availability fails when the share starts in a constrained mode. Have the presenter stop sharing and start again, ideally sharing the specific app window.
3) Check Teams version and updates
Outdated clients often miss newer control workflows. On desktop, update Microsoft Teams and retry the request.
- Windows/macOS: update Teams from its built-in updater (or the system updater used by your org).
- Web: reload the meeting tab and try a different supported browser if allowed by your policy.
4) Meeting and permission settings
Some organizations restrict screen control in sensitive meetings. If you’re an attendee in a locked-down environment, request approval may be disabled by policy.

If you see the request accepted but nothing responds, check with the presenter. They may have dismissed the prompt or granted it to the wrong participant.
6) Security prompts or OS-level restrictions
On macOS, for example, screen interaction and input features can be impacted by system privacy settings. If control previously worked and suddenly stopped, check macOS privacy/access settings for Teams.
On Windows, check whether your company security tooling blocks remote input for Teams meetings.
Common Mistakes That Block Control
- Trying to request control without an active share (it only appears when someone is sharing).
- Requesting control from the wrong view (look for the request option on the shared content toolbar/dialog).
- Waiting too long after requesting (presenters often see prompts briefly—message them if needed).
- Assuming mobile equals desktop capability (iPhone/iPad may not support request control reliably).
- Expecting control when the presenter chose an unsupported sharing mode (app-window sharing is often the safest bet).
Alternatives if Teams Control Isn’t Available
If request control is blocked for your meeting type or platform, you still have practical options for interactive help.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why can I see the shared screen but not the Request control button?
Most often it’s because the presenter hasn’t started a share mode that supports control, your client doesn’t support it, or the meeting/policy disables control. Ask the presenter to stop and re-share, and try again from a desktop client.

Can I request control if I joined from my iPhone or iPad?
Sometimes, but it’s not consistent. If you don’t see the request option on iOS/iPadOS, join from a Windows/macOS desktop app or from a supported browser to get the full control flow.
How does the presenter stop me from controlling?
The presenter can revoke control using the shared-screen controls (often labeled Stop control). If you need to stop for security reasons, have them revoke control immediately.
Does requesting control let me access private data outside what’s shared?
No—the interaction is limited to what the presenter is sharing in the meeting. Still, it’s safest to share only the app window or screen area you want the other person to interact with.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat if the presenter approves, but my mouse clicks don’t do anything?
Confirm you’re controlling the correct shared view. If it still fails, ask the presenter to stop sharing and restart, and then retry the request.
Bottom Line
Request control in Microsoft Teams works as a two-party handshake: you click Request control, and the presenter must approve with Give control. When the option is missing or input doesn’t respond, it’s usually a platform/client support issue, meeting policy, or a share mode mismatch.
If you run into trouble, re-share as an app window and retry from a Teams desktop client—then fall back to screen share coaching or Quick Assist if control is still unavailable.
