If a Steam game’s AI-use disclosure appears inconsistent with what you encountered, request a refund through Steam Help and describe the mismatch with concrete details. Steam’s standard rule for games is to request a refund within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime, but Valve says it will also review requests outside those limits. An AI-disclosure mismatch does not, by itself, guarantee approval.
What should I do if a Steam game’s AI disclosure seems wrong?
Submit a refund request for the Steam purchase and explain exactly what the store page disclosed, what you found in the game, and where and when you found it. Keep the explanation factual: a specific difference gives Steam something to review, while a general claim that the disclosure is misleading does not identify what needs checking.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesValve’s refund policy says, “You can request a refund for nearly any purchase on Steam—for any reason.” For games and software, its standard eligibility guideline is a request within two weeks of purchase and less than two hours of playtime. The policy also says Steam will review requests outside those guidelines; it does not promise that a discrepancy about AI use will be enough to secure a refund. See Valve’s Steam Refunds policy, last updated April 23, 2024.
The most useful way to frame the issue is as a comparison between two specific things: the wording that appeared on the game’s store page and the content or behavior you actually encountered. For example, identify the disclosure’s stated category, then identify the scene, asset, dialogue, translation, sound, or feature that led you to question it. Do not present an assumption about the developer’s software as a proven fact if all you can establish is what appeared on screen.

How do I request the refund?
Use Steam Help for a game bought through Steam. The steps below explain what to submit and what information to have ready; Steam does not publish a separate refund form specifically for AI-disclosure disputes.
- Open Steam Help. Go to help.steampowered.com and sign in to the account that bought the game. Signing in helps Steam show the purchases associated with the relevant account.
- Open the purchase-support flow. Choose the game or purchase you need help with, then follow the available refund or purchase-assistance options on screen. Select the transaction for the title at issue rather than describing an unrelated purchase.
- Explain the discrepancy. Identify the wording on the store page and the in-game content or behavior that appears inconsistent with it. Include where it occurs and when you encountered it. If the issue involves a particular mode, menu, level, or language, name that location.
- Include relevant purchase details. Note the purchase date and your playtime so the request can be considered against Steam’s standard guidelines. If you are outside either guideline, state that plainly instead of omitting it.
- Attach or retain your supporting material. Steam does not publish a mandatory AI-evidence list, but screenshots, quotations, and a short description of the observed event can make the account easier to evaluate. Keep the original files and the page wording you recorded.
- Submit the request and watch for Steam’s response. Steam reviews requests, including those outside its usual limits. Approval is not automatic, so state the facts without claiming that the policy guarantees a particular result.
A short, organized explanation is preferable to a long argument about artificial intelligence generally. You can describe the sequence in a few sentences: what the store page said, what the game displayed or generated, the point in the game where it happened, and your purchase date and playtime. If you have more than one example, list each one separately so the reviewer can tell which facts are firsthand observations.
What evidence should I include?
Steam’s published policy does not list a special evidence checklist for AI-disclosure cases. The following items are practical ways to make your account of the mismatch clear, not requirements Steam says every customer must meet.
- The exact store-page disclosure: save a screenshot or quote the relevant wording. If the page has changed since purchase, note when you captured it, if known. Preserve enough surrounding text to show which section or heading contained the statement.
- The in-game example: describe the content or behavior you observed, including the scene, feature, menu, or mode where it appeared. If you have a screenshot or other record, keep it available. A description such as “the character’s response changed after I entered a new prompt in the conversation screen” is more useful than “the game uses AI everywhere.”
- When it happened: include the date or approximate point in your playthrough when you encountered it. This helps distinguish the observed issue from a general concern about the game and gives Steam a timeline to compare with the store listing.
- Your purchase and playtime: provide the purchase date and playtime shown for the game in Steam. These details help establish whether the standard refund window applies.
- The exact location of the feature: name a chapter, quest, menu, language option, or game mode when possible. If the behavior appeared only after an update or only in a particular mode, say so as an observation.
- A clear statement of what you do not know: distinguish the visible result from the hidden production process. You can report that dialogue was generated during play without asserting which model or tool the developer used.
Separate what you observed from what you infer. For example, say that a particular line of dialogue changed during play if that is what happened; do not label it “live AI” unless you have a basis for that conclusion. A concise, verifiable description is more useful than speculation about the developer’s tools or intent.
Avoid overstating the evidence. A store page that does not mention a particular technique is not, by itself, proof that no AI was used; likewise, a human-like response is not conclusive proof of live generation. Your request can still explain why the disclosure and your experience appear inconsistent without deciding the technical question yourself.
How can I compare the disclosure with what the game does?
Steamworks distinguishes generative AI content by when it is created. That distinction can help you describe an apparent mismatch, but it does not create separate refund rules for either category.

| Steamworks term | Meaning in Valve’s documentation | What to look for | How to describe it in a request |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-Generated | AI-created content made during development, shipped in the game, and consumed by players. | Examples may include shipped artwork, sound, narrative, or localization. Look for a fixed asset or text that appears as part of the released build. | Name the asset or passage, where it appears, and what the store disclosure says about that kind of content. |
| Live-Generated | Content created with AI tools while the game is running. | Look for content produced during the session rather than a fixed asset included ahead of time. Record the action or input that preceded it. | Describe the in-session content or behavior, the mode or screen, and the circumstances in which it appeared. |
These are Valve’s terms in the Steamworks Content Survey documentation. They are categories for developer disclosures, not a customer-side test that conclusively identifies a game’s implementation. A player may be able to document what the game displayed without knowing which tools created it or when generation occurred.
Steamworks’ generative-AI section concerns content made with AI that ships with the game and is consumed by players. Its examples include artwork, sound, narrative, and localization. Live-generated content is described as content created with AI tools while the game is running. Valve also says developers must describe guardrails intended to prevent illegal generated content for live-generation disclosures. That requirement is directed at developers; it does not require a customer to prove whether a guardrail exists before requesting a refund.
For the refund request, focus on the actual difference between the store disclosure and your experience. If the disclosure concerns one kind of AI use but your concern is a different feature, explain that distinction rather than treating all AI use as the same thing. A listing that discloses AI-assisted localization, for instance, does not automatically answer whether dialogue is generated during play.
What if I’m outside the 14-day or two-hour guidelines?
You can still submit a request. Steam’s policy says it will review requests even when they fall outside the stated guidelines, although those limits are the standard conditions and an out-of-guideline request is not a promise of approval.

Explain why you are raising it now, if relevant. The policy does not say that an AI-disclosure mismatch overrides the time or playtime guidelines, so make the case on its facts rather than assuming an exception applies.
Being under the usual limits is also not a guarantee that every request will be approved for this reason. The policy describes the standard conditions for game and software refunds and says Steam will consider requests made outside them. It does not create a separate automatic entitlement for a disclosure complaint.

What happens after I submit the request?
Steam reviews the request, and you should rely on the decision communicated through your Steam support case rather than assuming the disclosure issue has a predetermined outcome. If Steam approves the refund, Valve says it is issued within a week, either to the Steam Wallet or to the original payment method where supported.
The policy permits customers to request refunds for nearly any reason within the standard conditions, and it allows out-of-guideline requests to be reviewed. It does not say that every difference between a store disclosure and a game’s contents is a policy violation or an automatic refund entitlement.

Keep your description consistent if Steam asks for clarification. Refer back to the same store wording and in-game example, and correct any genuine mistake about the purchase date or playtime. Do not turn an uncertain technical theory into a definitive accusation; the strongest request remains the one that clearly identifies what you saw and why it differs from the listing.
Does the AI disclosure affect the developer’s Steam survey?
Steamworks says developers complete a Content Survey before submitting a store page and product build for review. Valve says survey answers help it review the product and help customers understand whether content matches their expectations and account preferences; Valve also compares survey answers with the build and store page.
The survey is not merely an optional note attached after release. Steamworks describes it as part of the information submitted with the store page and product build for review. Valve’s documentation also states, “Products on Steam must adhere to the content rules, regardless of whether it is disclosed in these surveys.” In other words, disclosure does not excuse content that violates Steam’s rules, and the existence of a disclosure does not by itself resolve a customer’s refund question.
This developer-facing process is separate from a customer’s refund request. Steamworks says some survey answers cannot be edited after the build and store page are approved without contacting Steam Support. Developers seeking a correction may need to explain what changed and how a tester can access it. That process does not provide a customer with a refund remedy or establish that a particular request will be approved.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could I have additional consumer rights?
Possibly, depending on where you live and the facts of the purchase. Steam notes that some jurisdictions may provide additional rights when a game is faulty, but the general policy does not determine whether a particular AI-disclosure mismatch qualifies or what local law requires. If the issue may involve a legal entitlement, check the consumer rules that apply in your location or seek qualified local advice.
Jurisdiction matters because the Steam policy is a platform-wide baseline, while statutory rights can depend on factors such as where you bought the game and whether the product is considered faulty or not as described. Do not assume that a general statement about AI disclosure settles those questions. Preserve the listing and your factual account so you can explain the issue accurately if a local consumer authority or adviser asks for details.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using only a broad accusation: “The game lied about AI” does not identify the statement or the observed conduct. Quote the relevant wording and describe the specific mismatch.
- Confusing pre-generated and live-generated content: a shipped asset and content created while the game runs are different Steamworks categories. Explain which behavior you observed without claiming certainty you cannot establish.
- Ignoring the standard limits: give Steam the purchase date and playtime even if you think the disclosure issue deserves review. Omitting them does not change the policy.
- Treating the survey as a refund guarantee: Valve compares survey answers with the build and store page, but its documentation does not say that a mismatch automatically produces a refund.
- Assuming a changed store page proves what was shown at purchase: preserve the wording you saw and note when you captured it. A later version may not be identical.
- Sending speculation instead of observations: identify what appeared, when, and where. Leave unknown details about the developer’s tools identified as unknown.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Steam have a special refund form for an AI-disclosure dispute?
No special AI-disclosure form is published. Use Steam Help’s ordinary purchase-support and refund flow, then explain the store wording, the in-game example, and when you encountered it.
Does AI-generated localization count as AI content in Steam’s disclosure?
Steamworks includes localization among examples of generative AI content that may ship with a game for players to consume. Whether a particular game’s translation was AI-generated is a separate factual question; the category alone does not establish how a specific title was made.
What is the difference between pre-generated and live-generated AI?
Pre-generated content is created with AI during development and shipped in the game. Live-generated content is created with AI tools while the game is running. These categories help describe the issue but do not create different automatic refund rights.

Does an inconsistent AI disclosure prove the developer broke Steam’s rules?
No. Valve says it compares survey answers with the build and store page, and that products must follow Steam’s content rules whether or not content is disclosed in the survey. Those statements do not decide whether a specific discrepancy violates a rule.
Can I request a refund after 14 days or two hours of play?
Yes, you can still submit the request. Steam says it will review requests outside its standard two-week and under-two-hour guidelines, but it does not promise approval for an AI-disclosure mismatch.
Recommended Free Tools
How long does an approved Steam refund take?
Valve’s refund policy says an approved refund is issued within a week, to the Steam Wallet or the original payment method where supported.
Can I get a refund if I bought the game from a third-party key seller?
The Steam refund policy describes refunds for purchases on Steam. It does not establish how a separate retailer handles a key purchase, so check the seller’s own refund terms for that transaction.
Could local law give me rights beyond Steam’s policy?
Possibly. Steam notes that some jurisdictions may provide additional rights when a game is faulty. Whether those rights apply depends on your location and the facts, so consult the relevant local rules or qualified advice.
The Bottom Line
Use Steam Help, quote the game’s AI disclosure, describe the specific in-game discrepancy, and include your purchase date and playtime. Steam’s usual guideline is within 14 days and under two hours, but Valve says it will review requests outside those limits; an AI-disclosure mismatch alone is not an automatic refund guarantee.
