There is no universal switch that removes a song from every AI dataset or already-trained model. The practical route is to inventory who controls each right, disable platform sharing where available, send written reservations to developers and rights administrators, and use a copyright takedown only for an identifiable infringing copy hosted online. A reservation can restrict future text-and-data mining in some jurisdictions, but it cannot guarantee that every previously acquired file or model parameter will be deleted.
This guide explains what to do, which party has authority at each stage, what evidence to preserve, and where United States, United Kingdom and European Union rules differ. It is general information, not individualized legal advice.

Different actions target different places where your music may exist. Turning off a platform’s training-sharing control can stop a future transfer through that platform. A written reservation tells a developer or dataset operator that your specified works are not licensed for text-and-data mining or model training. A Section 512 notice asks an online service provider to remove a particular infringing copy. None of those steps automatically rewrites a model that has already learned from data.

Set the objective before contacting anyone. “Remove my song from AI” could mean stopping a platform transfer, preventing future collection, suppressing a dataset row, removing a hosted audio file, or addressing an output that imitates protected material. Each objective requires different evidence and a different recipient.

How do I inventory the rights in each recording?
Start with an asset-by-asset rights map. The person who wrote or performed a work is not necessarily the current rightsholder: assignments, label deals, publishing agreements and licences may have transferred control.
Separate the protected assets
- Composition: music and lyrics, including each co-writer’s share.
- Sound recording (master): the particular recorded performance released to the public.
- Performer interests: contractual or neighbouring rights that may be held by performers or their representatives.
- Music video: audiovisual footage, editing, synchronization and featured performers.
- Cover art and other artwork: photographs, illustrations, logos and design elements.
- Metadata: title, artist name, credits and identifiers; metadata may be controlled under separate agreements even when it is not itself a musical work.
Build a rights record
For every asset, record the title, artist, ISRC for the recording, ISWC for the composition where available, catalogue number, release date, distributor, label, publisher, co-writers, territories and collecting-society affiliations. Save the original session or master files and the contracts that show who can authorize mining, scraping, sublicensing or takedowns.
Mark the authority for each right separately. You may control a master while a label controls distribution, or have a collecting society administer the composition but not the recording. A notice signed by someone without authority can be rejected and may create avoidable disputes.
Check chain-of-title documents
Review split sheets, assignments, producer agreements, work-for-hire language, label licences, publishing administration terms and distributor terms. Look for clauses mentioning artificial intelligence, text and data mining, web scraping, machine learning, training data, sublicensing, residual rights or broad “new technology” grants. Keep a dated copy of each agreement and note any territory or term limits.
How do I turn off AI-training sharing on a music platform?
Use the platform’s own control first, because it is the quickest way to stop a platform-mediated transfer. The exact control varies by account type and can change, so save a screenshot or export showing the setting and the date.
YouTube settings
YouTube’s third-party training setting is off by default. In YouTube Studio or Content Manager, leave it off or select only the companies you have expressly authorized. YouTube says a change can take up to seven days to appear in the public API, so do not treat an immediate API result as proof that the setting failed.

- Open YouTube Studio or Content Manager and locate the third-party training control in the relevant rights or content settings.
- Confirm that third-party training is disabled, or select only named companies for which you have a written licence.
- Save the change and capture the account, catalogue scope, timestamp and resulting status.
- Recheck after seven days if an API or partner-facing record is important to your audit.
This setting controls YouTube’s sharing path. It does not prove that a developer did not obtain the same recording from a distributor, a public website, a user upload or another dataset.

Review every other agreement
Repeat the check for your label, publisher, distributor, collecting society and any service that hosts or syndicates your catalogue. A platform setting cannot override a contract that already grants a partner permission, and an individual artist’s setting cannot withdraw rights assigned to a label or publisher without that party’s involvement.
How do I write an AI-training rights reservation?
Send a targeted written notice to every party that controls a relevant copy or right: the developer, dataset operator, platform, label, publisher, distributor and collecting society. A reservation is strongest when it identifies the works precisely, states the rights you control and asks for a concrete response.
Include these details
- Your legal name, business name if applicable, contact details and authority to act.
- Each work’s title, artist, ISRC, ISWC, catalogue number, release date and official URLs.
- The assets covered: composition, lyrics, master, video, artwork or metadata.
- The territories, rights and repertoire mandate covered by your notice.
- A statement that text-and-data mining, scraping, dataset inclusion, model training, development and commercialization are not authorized except under a written licence.
- A request to suppress the identified works from future ingestion.
- A request describing whether copies already ingested can be deleted, quarantined, excluded from retraining or otherwise suppressed, and what process and timetable apply.
- A request for the legal entity responsible, the relevant policy and a written confirmation.
Use a neutral, auditable delivery method
Send the notice through the recipient’s designated rights, legal or privacy channel and by a method that gives you a delivery record. Keep the sent message, attachments, headers, ticket number, response and any follow-up. If a label or collecting society controls a right, copy that organization and state exactly which part of the catalogue your own notice covers.

Subject: Reservation of rights and request for AI-training exclusion — {{catalogue or works}}I control or am authorized to represent the rights identified below. I expressly reserve those rights and do not authorize text-and-data mining, web scraping, dataset inclusion, model training, model development or commercialization involving these works except under a written licence signed by the authorized rightsholder. Please confirm the process and date for suppressing the works from future ingestion, identify whether copies have already been ingested, and explain any deletion, exclusion or retraining procedure available for existing records.Do not describe the notice as a guaranteed deletion demand unless the recipient’s contract or law gives you that remedy. Ask for the available process and make the requested outcome specific.
Do collecting-society opt-outs cover my recordings?
Usually not automatically. A collecting society may administer publishing rights in compositions while a label, artist or another company controls the master recording. Ask the society to confirm the exact repertoire, mandate, territory, rights and dates covered by its opt-out.
Examples of published mechanisms
- SACEM: says data mining of works in its repertoire requires prior authorization after its opt-out. Its chief executive, Cécile Rap-Veber, said members’ works must not be used without consent to enrich and train AI tools.
- BumaStemra: says it exercised its opt-out in 2024 and that represented repertoire requires permission and fair compensation for the relevant use.
- Organization-level declarations: Sony Music’s 16 May 2024 declaration says its affiliates “expressly prohibit and opt out” of unauthorized text or data mining of its content for AI purposes. Concord likewise says it “expressly reserves and opts out” of text-and-data mining and related uses without written authorization.
These declarations apply to the organization’s repertoire or affiliates. They do not automatically enroll an independent artist whose work is outside that mandate. Obtain written confirmation that your composition, territory and membership or administration agreement are included, and handle the master separately.
When should I send a Section 512 takedown notice?
A U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) Section 512 notice is designed for an online service provider hosting an identifiable copy that you believe infringes your copyright. The U.S. Copyright Office says registration is not required before sending the notice.

Required notice elements
- Identify the copyrighted work, or a representative list if one notice covers multiple works.
- Identify the material to be removed and provide its location, such as the exact page, file URL or platform identifier.
- Provide your address, telephone number and email address.
- State that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by the rightsholder, an agent or the law.
- State, under penalty of perjury, that the information is accurate and that you are authorized to act.
- Provide a physical or electronic signature.
Address the notice to the service provider’s designated agent and retain proof of submission. If the material is a user upload, identify the specific file or post rather than broadly naming a model or service.
What a notice can and cannot target

Do not claim that a Section 512 notice automatically deletes a model’s internal training history. Whether a dataset copy or output infringes depends on the facts, licences, statutory exceptions, retention practices and jurisdiction.
What do U.S., U.K. and EU rules currently allow?
Rules differ by territory, and policy is still developing. Choose the framework that applies to the work, recipient, contract and alleged conduct rather than assuming one country’s procedure works everywhere.

These are general frameworks, not a determination that a particular use is lawful or unlawful. Contracts, court decisions, collecting-society mandates and national implementation can change the result.

How do industry and platform policies affect a removal request?
Voluntary policies can provide an additional route even when copyright law is unsettled. Sony Music, Concord, SACEM and BumaStemra have published repertoire-level or affiliate-level reservations. Deezer signed a Statement on AI Training on 29 October 2024 opposing unlicensed generative-AI training. Spotify describes policies against AI impersonation, spam and deception and supports DDEX-based AI disclosures in music credits.
These statements are not interchangeable. A repertoire declaration may bind only the organization’s controlled catalogue; an anti-impersonation policy may address deceptive uploads rather than training data; and a credit-disclosure standard does not itself remove a recording. Match the policy to your requested result and ask the provider which procedure applies.
What evidence should I preserve before escalating?
Preserve evidence before a file disappears or a model output changes. Keep an untouched copy and a working copy for annotations.

- Original masters, stems, lyric sheets, session files, artwork and video files.
- Registrations, split sheets, assignments, licences and label or publishing contracts.
- ISRC, ISWC, catalogue, release and distribution records.
- Official URLs, upload URLs, screenshots, API responses and access dates.
- Copies of every reservation, takedown, ticket, delivery receipt and reply.
- For a suspected output: the exact prompt, settings, account, timestamp, output file, surrounding interface and a lawful copy of the reference work.
- Technical evidence of copying or similarity, with notes explaining how it was collected and preserved.
Do not alter the only copy of a file or rely on a screenshot without retaining the underlying URL and downloaded evidence where lawful. A lawyer or collecting society can advise on preservation, privilege and the appropriate forum.
What should I do if the provider does not respond?
- Check that you contacted the correct legal entity or designated agent and that you identified the exact works and URLs.
- Send one concise follow-up referencing the original ticket or delivery record and ask for a substantive response by a stated date.
- Notify the label, publisher, distributor or collecting society that controls the relevant right and ask whether it has a separate escalation channel.
- Preserve evidence of the non-response and any continuing availability or outputs.
- Ask a qualified copyright lawyer about jurisdiction-specific remedies, contract claims, privacy or data-protection routes, and whether a court order or negotiated licence is realistic.
Escalation should follow the authority you actually hold. A master owner cannot demand removal of a composition on behalf of co-writers without authorization, and a society cannot necessarily act for a master it does not administer.

What common mistakes make an AI removal request fail?
Claiming rights you do not control
Separate composition, master, video and artwork ownership. Obtain co-writer, label or publisher authorization before sending a notice for rights held by someone else.
Using a broad demand without identifiers
“Remove all my music” is difficult to process. Supply ISRC or ISWC identifiers, catalogue numbers, exact titles, URLs and the territories covered.
Treating an opt-out as retroactive deletion
State whether you seek future exclusion, suppression of an existing dataset record, retraining, removal of a hosted copy or a licence discussion. Ask what the provider can actually perform.

A Section 512 notice goes to a service provider hosting the identified material, not automatically to a model developer whose internal records are not publicly located.
Ignoring contracts and collecting-society mandates
A platform control cannot undo an earlier licence, and a society’s opt-out may cover only compositions in its repertoire. Read the agreement and obtain written scope confirmation.
Failing to record dates
Platform settings, API status, declarations and policies can change. Keep dated screenshots, copies of notices and delivery records so you can show what was requested and when.
What is still unresolved?
No official source establishes a provider-neutral, guaranteed process that removes a song from every already-trained music model. Technical deletion of a source file, removal of a dataset row, retraining of a model and suppression of a future output are different operations, and providers may not disclose which one they perform.
Policy discussions continue around licensed datasets, machine-readable reservations, registries, transparency and compensation. Until a binding rule or contract gives you a broader remedy, describe your request precisely, document the response and avoid promising that an opt-out has erased prior training.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does deleting my release from a distributor stop AI companies from using it?
Not necessarily. A distributor removal may take the recording off that service while copies remain in caches, user uploads, public archives or datasets collected earlier. Ask the distributor what downstream partners were notified and send separate reservations to developers or dataset operators.
Can a performer who does not own the master send a takedown?
Only if the performer owns an applicable right or is authorized by the master owner, composition owners or another rightsholder. Performer, moral or neighbouring rights vary by country, so document the authority before making a formal claim.
How can I tell whether a model actually trained on my song?
Public output similarity alone rarely proves the training source. Preserve reproducible prompts and outputs, compare them with your authorized recordings and consult counsel or an expert who can assess copying, access and alternative explanations.

Will a machine-readable opt-out be honored by every crawler?
No. A signal can help communicate your reservation where a law or platform recognizes it, but implementation and compliance differ. Pair the signal with a written notice and retain evidence of the date and scope.
