To remove an AI assistant or chatbot from Linux, uninstall it with the same system that installed it: App Center, APT, Flatpak, Docker or Podman, uv, Conda, a virtual environment, a native package manager, an AppImage, or Nix. Removing the program does not necessarily remove chats, settings, uploaded files, downloaded models, caches, or container volumes. Stop the assistant first, identify its installation method, remove the software, then make a separate, deliberate decision about its stored data.
How do I identify how the AI assistant was installed?
The uninstall command depends on the installation source, not on whether the application is called an assistant, chatbot, ChatGPT client, or Open WebUI. Look for the application in Ubuntu App Center, then check the package and container systems you actually use. Do not run several removal commands at random: shared runtimes, dependencies, and data may belong to other applications.

| Installation form | Typical evidence | Removal mechanism | What may remain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu App Center | The app appears in App Center’s installed applications | App Center’s Uninstall action | Home-directory settings and separately stored data |
| APT or a Debian package | apt installed the package or it appears in the package list |
sudo apt remove or sudo apt remove --purge |
User files under /home, caches, and manually created data |
| Flatpak | The app appears in flatpak list |
flatpak uninstall |
Unused runtimes unless removed separately; user data may need its own cleanup |
| Docker Compose | A compose file or a running Open WebUI service | docker compose down |
Named volumes, including chats and settings |
| Podman | A container named openwebui or an equivalent image |
podman rm -f |
Images and volumes unless explicitly removed |
| uv, Conda, or venv | A command-line environment or a project directory starts the assistant | The corresponding tool or environment-directory removal | uv cache, custom DATA_DIR, and project data |
| AppImage | A downloaded executable ending in .AppImage |
Close it and delete that file | Desktop launchers, user data, and autostart entries |
| Nix | The package is in a profile, Home Manager configuration, or NixOS module | Remove the declaration, then rebuild | Profile data, configuration, plugins, and project state |
When the package name is unknown, use the package manager’s listing command rather than guessing. For example, apt list --installed, flatpak list, docker ps -a, and podman ps -a can show whether the assistant is registered there. A manually installed program might not appear in any of those lists.
How do I remove an assistant from Ubuntu App Center?
Ubuntu’s App Center can remove both Snap and Debian packages through its graphical interface. This is the safest route when the application is visibly listed there and you do not need to preserve its package installation.

Ubuntu warns that removing an application required by another application can remove both after confirmation. Read that confirmation instead of accepting it automatically. App Center removal addresses the installed package; it does not guarantee deletion of user-level chats, uploads, model files, or configuration in your home directory.
What command removes an AI assistant installed with APT or a .deb package?
For a Debian or Ubuntu package installed through APT, use apt remove. Replace package-name with the actual package name:
Recommended Free Tools
sudo apt remove package-name
To remove the package’s system configuration files as well, use:
sudo apt remove --purge package-name
Ubuntu’s package documentation specifically distinguishes these operations: adding --purge to apt remove removes package configuration files. Purging still does not mean “erase everything related to this app.” System-wide package files may be removed while user-specific configuration and data under /home remain. System76 likewise notes that package removal usually retains user configuration in /home.
How do I find the APT package name?
Search the installed-package list before removing anything:
apt list --installed 2>/dev/null | grep -i assistant
Use a distinctive product or package fragment in place of assistant. If the result is a meta-package or a library shared with other software, inspect the proposed removal list carefully; APT may offer to remove dependent applications.

How do I uninstall a Flatpak chatbot?
Remove a Flatpak with its application ID:
flatpak uninstall package-name
Find the exact ID with:
flatpak list
Flatpak can leave runtimes that no installed application now needs. System76 documents this optional cleanup command:
flatpak uninstall --unused
Review the list before confirming. A runtime can be shared by other Flatpaks, and removing an unused runtime is different from deleting the assistant’s own user data. If the assistant created files in your home directory or a separately mounted location, inspect those locations independently.

How do I remove Open WebUI installed with Docker?
For an Open WebUI deployment started with Docker Compose, first change to the directory containing its Compose file and stop the services:
docker compose down
This removes the containers and network created by that Compose project but keeps the named volume. Keeping the volume is useful if you might reinstall and want your chats and settings back.
To remove the services and the Compose-managed volumes at the same time, use:
docker compose down -v
The -v option deletes the volume and therefore stored chats, settings, and any other data in it. Back up anything needed before running it. Deleting the container image is a separate choice; removing containers does not necessarily reclaim every downloaded image layer.
How do I remove an Open WebUI container with Podman?
For the Podman installation described by Open WebUI’s documentation, remove the running container with:
podman rm -f openwebui
If you also want to remove the image, run:
podman rmi ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main
To delete the named data volume, run:
podman volume rm open-webui
Image and volume removal are optional. The volume command is destructive: it can erase stored chats and settings. Run it only after exporting or accepting the loss of that data. If your container uses a different name, image tag, or volume name, list them with podman ps -a and podman volume ls and substitute the exact values.

uv installation
Remove a tool installed by uv with:
uv tool uninstall open-webui
Clear uv’s cached packages only if you no longer need them for another environment:
uv cache clean
Cache cleanup can reclaim disk space but is not the same as deleting Open WebUI’s application data.

Conda installation
If the assistant lives in a dedicated Conda environment, remove the entire environment:
conda remove --name open-webui --all
Substitute the environment’s actual name if it differs. This removes packages in that environment, not data stored elsewhere.
Python virtual environment
Stop the assistant, leave the environment, and remove the virtual-environment directory:
rm -rf venv
Replace venv with the directory you created. The command is irreversible, so verify the path with pwd and ls first. A venv directory normally contains installed Python packages, while chats, uploads, models, or a custom data directory may be outside it.
What about Open WebUI’s DATA_DIR?
Open WebUI warns that a separately configured DATA_DIR must be deleted separately when you want complete removal. When no custom path was set, its usual data directory is ~/.open-webui. Check your Compose file, shell service, or launch script for a custom DATA_DIR before deleting anything; removing the environment or container alone may leave that directory untouched.
How do I remove the Open WebUI Computer component?
The Open WebUI Computer component is a separate Python package called cptr. Uninstall it with:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →pip uninstall cptr
For complete removal, delete the component’s state directory:
rm -rf ~/.cptr
That directory contains accounts, settings, and uploads. Each workspace can also contain a .cptr/ directory holding chats and artifacts. Remove those workspace directories only after checking that the conversations and generated artifacts are no longer needed. Project files outside those directories are left untouched by this cleanup.

How do I remove a native Linux package installed by a distribution package manager?
Use the package manager for the distribution that installed the native desktop package. The codex-desktop-linux instructions list these commands for the package named codex-desktop:
| Distribution | Removal command |
|---|---|
| Debian or Ubuntu | sudo apt remove codex-desktop |
| Fedora | sudo dnf remove codex-desktop |
| openSUSE | sudo zypper remove codex-desktop |
| Arch or Manjaro | sudo pacman -R codex-desktop |
| Gentoo | Remove it with the corresponding emerge operation |
These commands remove the registered package. They may leave per-user configuration, plugins, project state, downloaded models, or an updater. Do not delete a shared directory such as ~/.codex unless you intentionally want to erase that profile and its project data.
How do I remove an AI AppImage?
An AppImage is usually just a downloaded executable rather than a package registered with APT or Flatpak. Close the assistant, then delete the specific .AppImage file you downloaded. If you created a desktop launcher, remove that launcher separately; otherwise the old icon can continue to appear even though the executable is gone.
Deleting the file does not automatically remove user settings, model caches, browser data, or an autostart entry. Inspect the application’s documented state directory and your desktop’s startup settings before deleting additional files.
How do I remove a Nix-installed assistant?
Nix packages can come from a user or system profile, Home Manager configuration, or a NixOS module. Remove the package declaration from the place where it was defined, then rebuild that profile or system. Removing a store path directly is not the right operation because Nix manages dependencies and generations.
After the rebuild, check whether the assistant’s profile data, configuration, plugins, and project state are still needed. Nix package removal can preserve those files. In particular, do not remove ~/.codex or another shared state directory merely because the executable disappeared.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow do I stop a leftover updater or background service?
A manually installed desktop assistant can leave a user-level updater or autostart service after the main program is removed. Inspect the service first so you do not disable an unrelated unit. For the updater named in the native-package instructions, stop and disable it with:
systemctl --user disable --now codex-update-manager.service
Then reload the user service manager:
systemctl --user daemon-reload
Also inspect your desktop’s autostart entries and any user service that launches the chatbot. Reboot or log out only after removing the service or autostart entry if a process still starts automatically. If the assistant is still running, identify its process and listening port before deleting files; an active process can recreate state or keep a directory locked.

How do I delete chats, settings, uploads, models, and caches safely?
Software removal and data removal are separate decisions. First close the client and stop its server or container. Then locate the application’s documented state directory, named volume, workspace folder, or custom data path and make a backup of conversations or files you may need.
| Data location or artifact | Typical contents | Safe action |
|---|---|---|
| Docker Compose named volume | Open WebUI chats, settings, uploads, and application state | Keep it with docker compose down, or delete it with -v only after backup |
| Podman volume | Container-persisted chats and settings | Remove with podman volume rm only when loss is intentional |
~/.open-webui |
Usual Open WebUI data when no custom path is configured | Archive or delete after confirming it is not shared with another install |
Custom DATA_DIR |
Data redirected to a location chosen in configuration | Find the configured path and handle it separately |
~/.cptr |
Computer-component accounts, settings, and uploads | Delete only for complete component cleanup |
Workspace .cptr/ |
Computer-component chats and artifacts | Remove per workspace after checking required artifacts |
Home-directory state such as ~/.codex |
Profile, configuration, plugins, and project state | Preserve unless you explicitly want a full reset |
Do not use a broad command such as rm -rf on an uncertain path. Print the path, verify its owner and contents, and make sure it is not mounted into another assistant or project. Shared model caches can be large, but deleting one may force another application to download the same model again.
What should I do if the assistant still appears after uninstalling it?
The launcher remains but the program is gone
Remove the stale desktop file from the user or system autostart/application directories after confirming that its Exec path points to the deleted program. Log out and back in if the desktop menu cache does not refresh immediately.
The process or web interface is still running
You probably removed a package while a separate container, user service, or terminal process was still active. Check Docker or Podman containers, user services, and the terminal or shell script that started the server. Stop that owner first, then remove its image, environment, or data volume using the matching method.
Reinstallation restores old chats
The old data was retained in a named volume, DATA_DIR, or a home-directory state folder. That is expected: uninstalling the executable does not imply data destruction. Delete or move the specific persistent location only after confirming that no backup or other installation still depends on it.
APT wants to remove unrelated software
Cancel and read the dependency transaction. A package may be shared or may have been installed as a dependency for another application. Removing only the assistant package, rather than accepting a large proposed removal, avoids collateral damage.
What is the safest complete-removal sequence?
- Close the assistant and stop its server, container, or background process.
- Identify whether it came from App Center, APT or a .deb, Flatpak, Docker, Podman, uv, Conda, a venv, an AppImage, Nix, or a native package.
- Remove the software with that same mechanism.
- Inspect user services, autostart entries, and updater units left by manual installation.
- Locate the documented data directory, named volume, workspace folder, or custom
DATA_DIR. - Back up chats, settings, uploads, projects, or models that may be needed later.
- Delete persistent data and caches only when the loss is intentional.
- Log out or reboot only if a service or autostart process continues to appear.
This sequence prevents the two common mistakes: deleting valuable conversations while leaving a background container running, or removing the visible application while its volume, updater, and private data remain.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether a chatbot is running in Docker or Podman?
Run docker ps -a and podman ps -a separately; each command lists containers managed by that engine. A result in one list does not appear in the other, so check the engine you used when setting up the assistant.
Does apt remove --purge erase my personal conversations?
Not usually. Purge removes package-managed configuration, while conversations and other personal files commonly live under your home directory, a separate data directory, or a container volume.
Can I keep an Open WebUI volume and reinstall later?
Yes. Stopping a Compose deployment with docker compose down keeps its named volume, so a later deployment can reuse the stored state. Treat that volume as the backup and do not run the -v variant unless you accept permanent deletion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy did removing a virtual environment not free much disk space?
The environment contains Python packages, but model downloads, uploads, caches, and application databases may be stored elsewhere. Check for a custom DATA_DIR, ~/.open-webui, workspace state, and container volumes before removing additional files.
