Whether you must register for GST depends on how your online sale is structured, not simply on the fact that you sell on the internet. The key test is whether the platform is an e-commerce operator required to collect tax at source (TCS) under section 52 of the CGST Act. CBIC’s sectoral FAQ says compulsory registration under section 24(ix) applies when supplies are made through such an operator. Because platforms, products, states and supply routes differ, no general guide can give every seller the same yes-or-no result.

If registration is required—or you choose to register—apply on the official GST Common Portal through Services > Registration > New Registration. You will enter PAN-linked business details, complete the application tabs, follow the Aadhaar or biometric authentication route shown for your application, and then report online sales in the appropriate GSTR-1 tables.

Do I need GST registration to sell on Amazon or another e-commerce platform in India?

Not every online seller can be classified from the platform name alone. First identify whether the platform fits the statutory definition of an e-commerce operator and is required to collect TCS under section 52. CBIC’s Sectoral FAQs state that a person supplying through an operator with that TCS obligation is subject to compulsory registration under section 24(ix), subject to applicable notifications and exceptions.

What is the difference between a marketplace seller and an e-commerce operator?

They are separate roles. The seller supplies goods or services; the operator owns, operates or manages the digital or electronic facility through which electronic commerce takes place. CBIC defines an electronic commerce operator in section 2(45) of the CGST Act, 2017 as “any person who owns, operates or manages digital or electronic facility or platform for electronic commerce.”

The operator’s tax treatment matters because TCS rules are not a description of every online transaction. CBIC’s FAQ also distinguishes sales made by an operator on its own account from supplies made by other sellers through the platform. A platform selling its own inventory and a marketplace facilitating your inventory can therefore create different compliance questions.

What condition triggers the compulsory-registration rule?

The cited rule applies when your supply is made through an electronic commerce operator that is required to collect TCS under section 52. It should not be simplified to “every seller on every website must register,” and a turnover threshold should not be assumed to protect a seller where the compulsory-registration condition applies.

Conversely, the fact that you use a website, social-media page or online payment link does not by itself establish that the arrangement falls within section 24(ix). Confirm the platform’s current tax role, the legal nature of your supply and any notification or exception that applies on the date you register.

Which facts can change the answer?

Decision point Why it matters What this guide establishes
Platform’s TCS status Section 24(ix) is tied to supplies through an operator required to collect section 52 TCS. CBIC states this condition; verify the platform’s current status.
Own-account or third-party sale An operator’s own sale is treated differently from a supply by another seller through the platform. CBIC identifies the distinction; the correct treatment depends on your contract and flow.
Goods or services Supply classification affects reporting and possible exceptions. Use the category that matches the actual supply; a universal result is not established.
Intra-state or inter-state supply The state of registration and movement or place-of-supply facts can alter compliance. Check the states and supply route for your transaction.
State, turnover and notifications Thresholds and exceptions can depend on current law and notifications. Do not rely on an old threshold statement; verify current CBIC/GSTN material.

For a mixed catalogue, multiple warehouses, services, inter-state orders or unusual contracts, have a qualified GST practitioner or chartered accountant examine the facts before you decide that registration is unnecessary.

What should I check before starting the GST application?

Prepare the identity and contact information exactly as it appears in your PAN records. The GSTN normal-taxpayer manual requires the legal business name as shown in PAN, the PAN of the business or proprietor, and the primary authorised signatory’s email address and valid Indian mobile number.

  • Decide whether the applicant is a proprietor, company, partnership or another legal form, and use the corresponding PAN.
  • Choose the state or Union territory and district where the registration application is made.
  • Select an authorised signatory who can receive OTPs and complete the portal’s authentication steps.
  • List the principal place of business and any additional places that the application requires.
  • Identify the goods or services you actually sell so the correct classifications can be entered.
  • Keep access to the signatory’s email and Indian mobile throughout the application; separate OTPs are sent to the two contacts entered.

The portal may ask for further information or route an application through a different authentication process. Treat the on-screen instructions as controlling for that application rather than assuming that another seller’s route will be identical.

How do I apply for GST as an online seller?

The normal-taxpayer route is completed on the GST Common Portal. The sequence below follows GSTN’s registration manual; labels can be revised, so read the current screen before submitting each section.

  1. Open the registration service. On the GST Common Portal, go to Services > Registration > New Registration, or use the portal’s Register Now link. Select Taxpayer as the taxpayer type, then choose the state or Union territory and district.
  2. Enter PAN and contact details. Type the legal business name exactly as it appears in PAN, enter the business or proprietor PAN, and provide the primary authorised signatory’s email and valid Indian mobile number. The portal sends separate OTPs to the email and mobile you entered; complete both verification prompts.
  3. Complete the application tabs. Continue through Business Details; Promoter/Partners; Authorised Signatory; Authorised Representative; Principal Place of Business; Additional Places of Business; Goods and Services; State Specific Information; Aadhaar Authentication; and Verification. Save each section and check that names, addresses, state selections and supply classifications are consistent.
  4. Follow the authentication route displayed. Some applications use Aadhaar-linked OTP authentication. Applications routed to biometric authentication require an appointment and a visit to a designated GST Suvidha Kendra, as described in the GSTN manual. The route is conditional, so do not assume that an Aadhaar OTP alone completes every application.
  5. Submit and retain the acknowledgement. After verification, submit through the portal and keep the application reference and submitted details. Use the GST Portal’s tracking facility to watch for status changes or a request for clarification.

How does Aadhaar or biometric authentication affect the process?

Authentication is an application-specific branch, not a separate registration type for online sellers. If the portal presents Aadhaar OTP authentication, complete the prompts using the linked details. If it assigns biometric authentication, schedule and attend the designated GST Suvidha Kendra appointment specified by the portal; an OTP-only attempt will not replace that required visit.

What if the portal asks for clarification?

Open the application status on the GST Portal and read the exact clarification request. Respond with the information or documents the notice asks for within the response window shown on the portal, then monitor the status again. The official material does not establish a universal approval time, so avoid anyone promising a fixed number of days.

How long does GST registration take?

There is no single processing period established for every applicant in the material used here. Timing can vary with the completeness of the application, the authentication route, portal requests and the jurisdiction handling the case. A clean submission can still be delayed if the officer seeks clarification or the application is routed to biometric verification.

Do not treat an acknowledgement number as proof that registration has been granted. Use the portal status and the registration certificate or other official communication shown there before representing yourself as registered to customers or a platform.

What must I report after registering?

Registration creates an ongoing return-reporting obligation. GSTN describes GSTR-1 as the statement of outward supplies and identifies specific reporting for supplies made through e-commerce operators where the operator is liable to collect TCS under section 52 or pay tax under section 9(5).

Which GSTR-1 tables cover e-commerce supplies?

GSTR-1 location Period or role described by GSTN Practical point
Table 14 Relevant e-commerce supplies; available for January 2024 tax periods onward. Use the live form and current period instructions to determine the applicable entries.
Table 15 Relevant e-commerce-operator information; available for January 2024 tax periods onward. Supplier and operator reporting are not the same; follow the role assigned to your account.
Tables 14A and 15A Amendments for the relevant entries from February 2024 tax periods onward. Use these amendment tables only when the current return period and correction require them.

The section 9(5) category has a different allocation of responsibility: GSTN’s guidance describes the operator as paying the tax in the specified category, while the supplier still has reporting obligations in the applicable GSTR-1 structure. Confirm the current portal form before filing because table availability and instructions can change.

What records should an online seller reconcile?

Reconcile the orders and invoices you report with the platform statements, cancellations, returns and any TCS or section 9(5) treatment shown for the same period. Keep the supply classification and state details consistent with the registration application. If a platform statement does not explain whether it is collecting TCS or paying tax under section 9(5), obtain clarification before selecting a return category rather than guessing.

How do common seller situations differ?

I sell my own products through a marketplace

Determine whether the marketplace is an operator required to collect section 52 TCS and whether your contract treats you as the supplier making the sale through it. That combination is the situation to which CBIC links compulsory registration under section 24(ix), subject to current exceptions.

The platform sells inventory it owns

CBIC’s FAQ distinguishes own-account sales from supplies by other sellers. If the platform is the seller of record for inventory it owns, do not automatically apply the marketplace-supplier analysis to your arrangement; establish who makes the taxable supply and who, if anyone, is supplying through the operator.

I sell services rather than goods

The registration workflow is still the normal taxpayer application, but the supply classification, place-of-supply facts and any section 9(5) category may differ. Select the services you actually provide and verify the current rule for that service before relying on a goods-seller explanation.

I sell across state borders or use more than one location

State selection, additional places of business and intra-state or inter-state supply routes become material. Enter every place the application requires and obtain advice when stock, fulfilment or service performance spans states; the general rule for one location cannot resolve every multi-state pattern.

I am a casual or otherwise special taxpayer

A normal-taxpayer application may not be the correct route for every special status. If you are a casual taxable person or another special case, confirm the appropriate registration category on the portal before entering the normal workflow.

What mistakes should e-commerce sellers avoid?

  • Assuming every platform has the same TCS status. Check the operator’s current legal and contractual role instead of inferring it from the platform’s popularity.
  • Using turnover as the only test. The section 24(ix) condition tied to a section 52 operator can be decisive even when a seller expects a threshold exemption.
  • Confusing the operator with the seller. Identify who owns the inventory, issues the supply documentation and receives the customer order under the arrangement.
  • Entering a trade name instead of the PAN legal name. The application asks for the legal business name as shown in PAN.
  • Missing one OTP. Email and mobile verification are separate; access to only one contact will not finish the initial validation.
  • Stopping after Aadhaar OTP. A biometric-routed application also requires the designated GST Suvidha Kendra appointment described by the portal.
  • Copying an old GSTR-1 layout. Tables 14 and 15, and amendment tables 14A and 15A, have period-specific availability; check the live return for the period you are filing.
  • Expecting a guaranteed approval date. No universal processing time is established; monitor status and answer clarifications instead of relying on an agent’s promise.

When should I get professional GST advice?

Consider a qualified GST practitioner or chartered accountant when the platform’s TCS status is unclear, you sell both goods and services, operate warehouses or offices in multiple states, make inter-state supplies, or need to determine whether section 9(5) applies. A professional can review the contract and transaction flow, but you should still verify the final registration and return instructions on the GST Portal.

For a straightforward application, the government portal itself is the authoritative and free place to submit the registration. Commercial guides may become outdated when notifications or portal screens change, so use them only as supplementary explanations and rely on current CBIC and GSTN material for the decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a small seller rely on the GST turnover threshold when selling online?

Not automatically. If the supply is made through an operator that is required to collect section 52 TCS, CBIC links that condition to compulsory registration under section 24(ix). Check the current notification and the platform’s status before treating turnover as an exemption.

How can I find out whether my platform collects GST TCS?

Ask the platform for its current GST/TCS treatment in the seller agreement or tax-support channel and compare that information with current CBIC or GSTN material. Do not infer the answer from the platform’s checkout design or from another marketplace’s policy.

Are online service providers registered through a different GST portal?

The normal taxpayer application is still filed on the GST Common Portal, but service classification, place-of-supply rules and possible section 9(5) treatment can change the liability analysis. Verify those facts before selecting the goods or services entries.

What should I do if my platform statement and GSTR-1 data do not match?

Pause the filing decision and reconcile orders, cancellations, returns and the platform’s TCS or section 9(5) designation for the same period. Ask the platform for a corrected statement or professional advice rather than forcing figures into an inapplicable table.
