The practical answer is to measure your entire portfolio’s AI dependence, set a loss you can tolerate, diversify across independent risk drivers, and rebalance with tax and liquidity controls. Owning several index funds does not ensure diversification if they all hold the same mega-cap technology companies or finance the same data-centre build-out. The overlap can also reach utilities, energy, real estate, semiconductor suppliers, infrastructure lenders and corporate bonds. Map direct and indirect exposure first; only then decide what to trim, what to replace and whether bonds would actually help in the stress scenario you face.
Why can AI concentration hide in an apparently diversified portfolio?
Concentration risk is the chance that a large share of your wealth depends on one company, theme, industry, supply chain, financing cycle or economic outcome. AI exposure is unusually easy to miss because the same driver can appear under different fund names and asset classes.

A broad-market fund may hold those companies because their market capitalisations have grown. A utilities fund may own companies adding power for data centres; an infrastructure or real-estate fund may hold data-centre operators; and a corporate-bond fund may lend to firms whose cash flows depend on AI-related construction and demand. These are different securities, but they can lose value together if AI investment slows, regulation changes, export controls restrict hardware, or financing becomes scarce.
The Pensions Regulator (TPR) reported on 22 October 2026 that global private AI investment rose 127.5% year over year in 2025. TPR says, “AI has the potential to generate substantial and lasting productivity and economic benefits, but the investment required to build AI and related infrastructure is changing global market composition.” It also warns that “Even a diversified portfolio may have hidden concentration risk because AI is increasingly embedded across sectors.”

Diversification still works: spreading money among investments means a loss in one can be partly offset by others, as the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) explains. It reduces risk; it cannot eliminate losses or guarantee that stocks and bonds will move in opposite directions.
How do I build an AI-exposure map for my whole portfolio?
Inventory every account before changing anything. Include taxable brokerage accounts, retirement plans, pension default funds, separately managed accounts, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), individual stocks and bonds, cash substitutes and any leveraged position.
- Export current holdings. Record the security identifier, market value, cost basis, account, currency and whether the position is direct or held through a fund.
- Inspect every fund. Read the latest holdings file, prospectus and index methodology. Capture the top holdings, sector and country weights, issuer, turnover, leverage and any thematic screen. A fund’s name is not a concentration analysis.
- Trace common names. Add the market value of the same company wherever it appears. Include look-through holdings in pension or managed accounts, not just the positions you selected yourself.
- Classify economic dependencies. Tag semiconductor manufacturing, cloud and networking, data-centre operators, power and cooling, construction, specialised real estate, software, lenders and other businesses whose revenue or financing depends materially on AI build-out.
- Map bond risk. For each bond or bond fund, record issuer, parent company, industry, credit rating, maturity, duration, currency, callable features and liquidity. A government label does not describe the risk of a corporate or project-finance bond inside a fund.
- Aggregate by driver. Total direct AI revenue exposure, indirect supply-chain exposure, common issuers, data-centre financing, geographic dependence and factor exposures such as high valuation, growth and long duration.
FINRA’s practical instruction is to “Look ‘under the hood’ of each mutual fund or ETF you own” to find overlapping positions. Repeat the exercise across the entire household portfolio; two spouses’ accounts or a pension and an investment account can duplicate the same exposure.
What counts as direct versus indirect exposure?
| Exposure type | What to look for | Why it can correlate with an AI sell-off |
|---|---|---|
| Direct | Companies whose products, revenue or valuation depend primarily on AI models, chips or AI software | AI adoption, pricing, competition or regulation directly changes expected cash flows |
| Enabler and supply chain | Semiconductors, networking, cloud capacity, cooling, construction and specialised equipment | Orders and capital spending can fall together if customers delay projects |
| Infrastructure and real estate | Data-centre operators, power utilities, landlords and infrastructure vehicles | High build costs, power constraints, refinancing and occupancy assumptions may be revised |
| Financing | Corporate, project and securitised bonds funding technology or infrastructure expansion | Credit spreads can widen and liquidity can disappear even when the bond is not labelled “technology” |
| Portfolio-level | Growth, momentum, long-duration and high-valuation factors repeated across funds | Discount-rate or risk-appetite changes can hit different sectors at the same time |
How can I tell whether my index funds overlap?
Compare holdings and weights rather than relying on fund labels. Two broad funds can share the same largest companies, while a “technology,” “innovation” or “AI” fund can add another layer of the identical exposure.

Use the holdings date shown by each provider; positions change and reporting lags differ. Match securities by identifier, then calculate the percentage of the portfolio represented by each repeated name. Separately total companies that depend on the same customer spending, hardware bottleneck, power build-out or financing market. A low overlap by ticker can still conceal high overlap by economic driver.
Market-cap weighting deserves special attention. When a few companies become very large, a broad index can remain diversified by constituent count while becoming concentrated by value. Check the largest 10 holdings, the top-sector share, country weights and the index’s rebalancing rules. Equal-weight or capped alternatives may reduce a single company’s influence, but they introduce tracking error, turnover and different sector bets.
Which measurements should be on the dashboard?
- Largest single-company percentage across all accounts.
- Combined percentage in AI developers, hardware and major enablers.
- Top-10 holding share for each fund and for the consolidated portfolio.
- Sector, country, currency and style weights compared with your chosen benchmark.
- Bond exposure by issuer, parent group, rating bucket, duration, maturity year and currency.
- Percentage that could not be sold quickly without a material price concession.
- Unrealised gains, tax lots, expected trading costs and cash needed for near-term spending.
How large should my AI risk budget be?
Set a ceiling based on your own ability to withstand a drawdown, not on a universal “AI allocation” number. Consider investment horizon, job and business income, planned withdrawals, emergency reserves, debt, tax position and whether you could hold through a multi-year decline.
Define at least two limits: a maximum direct single-name position and a maximum combined exposure to the AI theme and its supply chain. Include indirect bonds and real assets in the second limit. Write the limits down before selecting replacement funds so a new holding does not quietly recreate the risk you removed.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) uses a general rule of thumb that no more than 10% of net assets should be in investments carrying a real risk of losing a significant part or all of their value. That is a broad high-risk-investment guideline, not an AI-specific portfolio ceiling, and it may not fit your circumstances or local rules.
What is the most reliable way to diversify AI-exposed equities?
Use several independent dimensions: company size, sector, geography and investment style. Broad domestic and international funds can provide a core, but verify their actual weights before adding narrow funds.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Dimension | Concentration check | Possible adjustment | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Company size | Whether mega-cap companies dominate value-weighted exposure | Use a capped, equal-weight or smaller-company allocation where suitable | Higher turnover, tracking error and small-company volatility |
| Sector | Technology plus utilities, communications, industrials or real estate tied to the same build-out | Add sectors with different earnings drivers rather than another technology fund | May lag during an AI-led boom |
| Geography | Revenue, listing or supply-chain dependence on one country or region | Combine domestic and international exposure after checking currency and country weights | Currency and political risk remain |
| Style | Repeated growth, momentum, high-valuation or long-duration factors | Balance with value, quality, profitability or lower-volatility approaches when appropriate | Factor cycles can produce long periods of underperformance |
Compare candidate funds by direct AI revenue, indirect supply-chain dependence, top-holding concentration, geography, valuation sensitivity, fees, liquidity and tracking error. A broad ETF is a tool, not proof of diversification; a narrowly focused ETF can compound an existing position.
Can bonds protect me if AI stocks fall?
Sometimes, but never automatically. High-quality government bonds may gain when investors seek safety or interest rates fall, yet an AI shock could also involve inflation, fiscal concerns, forced selling or a rise in correlations that causes stocks and bonds to decline together. TPR guidance therefore calls for testing changing correlations and liquidity rather than assuming a fixed hedge.

Separate bond exposures by issuer type, credit quality, duration, maturity, currency and liquidity. Corporate and infrastructure bonds connected to data-centre or technology expansion can share the same economic risk as equities. A short-maturity, high-quality issuer has different behaviour from a long-duration, lower-rated project-finance bond even if both sit in a “bond” allocation.
| Bond segment | AI-cycle question | Risk to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Government debt | Would a risk-off move lower yields, or would inflation and fiscal concerns push them higher? | Duration, inflation sensitivity, currency and sovereign concentration |
| Investment-grade corporate | Are issuers dependent on technology capex or data-centre demand? | Issuer overlap, credit-spread widening, downgrades and liquidity |
| High-yield | Could weaker AI-related spending reduce refinancing access? | Default risk, spread duration, covenants and forced selling |
| Municipal and securitised | Are revenues or collateral tied to power, commercial property or specialised infrastructure? | Underlying project concentration, structure, prepayment and market depth |
| Short-term and cash-like | Can this sleeve fund spending while risk assets are impaired? | Credit quality, access, inflation erosion and reinvestment risk |
Stagger maturities so that the portfolio does not depend on refinancing in one year. Review callable features, duration and the time required to sell. A bond fund has no maturity date for the investor; its price can remain volatile as securities roll through the portfolio.
How should I rebalance without creating an unnecessary tax bill?
Rebalancing returns the portfolio to its intended allocation, but the SEC notes that fees and tax consequences require attention. Use a written threshold and schedule instead of reacting to headlines.
- Set targets and bands. Specify equity, bond, cash and sub-allocation targets, plus a tolerance band that triggers review. Include the direct and combined AI limits.
- Use cash flows first. Direct new contributions, dividends and maturing bonds toward underweight areas before selling appreciated positions.
- Choose the account. Tax-advantaged accounts may allow exchanges with less immediate tax impact, while taxable accounts require lot-level planning and attention to local wash-sale or equivalent rules.
- Select tax lots deliberately. Compare realised gain, holding period, loss availability and your current marginal rate. Do not sell a large gain solely to hit a cosmetic percentage if the exposure is within your written risk budget.
- Control execution. Check bid-ask spreads, fund dealing times, commissions, redemption fees and market liquidity. Phase trades when a single order would move an illiquid security.
- Recalculate after each trade. Include cash, accrued interest, currency movements and the holdings of the replacement fund. Confirm that the new position does not duplicate the same companies or supply chain.
For a pension scheme or workplace plan, document who approves changes, how liquidity is maintained and how members will be informed during volatility. Individual investors should keep enough readily available assets for near-term spending so that a drawdown does not force a sale.

How do I stress-test an AI-led drawdown?
Use a severe-but-plausible range rather than one forecast. The objective is to discover whether losses, cash calls and illiquidity would exceed your plan.
| Scenario | Shock to model | Measure |
|---|---|---|
| Valuation reset | Sharp fall in AI-linked equity prices and a simultaneous decline in growth and momentum factors | Portfolio drawdown, recovery time and largest-contributor losses |
| Slower adoption | Delayed customer spending, cancelled projects and lower revenue growth for developers and enablers | Equity earnings sensitivity and bond downgrade or spread risk |
| Policy and trade disruption | Export controls, new regulation or restrictions on data and model deployment | Country, currency, supply-chain and stranded-asset exposure |
| Infrastructure bottleneck | Power, cooling, permitting or construction delays that defer cash flows | Utility, real-estate, project-finance and refinancing losses |
| Credit and liquidity shock | Wider spreads, reduced market depth and higher margin or collateral requirements | Cash needed, forced-sale risk, bond losses and time to liquidate |
| Correlation change | Stocks and bonds fall together instead of providing offsetting returns | Net loss, spending coverage and whether the hedge still works |
Run the scenarios at the consolidated level and compare the results with your risk tolerance and scheduled withdrawals. Record assumptions, decision owners and the actions that would be taken at each loss or liquidity threshold; a stress test is useful only when it changes a plan.

What mistakes most often recreate concentration risk?
- Counting funds instead of exposures: five funds can still be one trade if the same companies dominate each.
- Using labels as analysis: “broad,” “quality” or “income” does not reveal issuer, duration or supply-chain dependence.
- Treating bonds as a guaranteed hedge: credit, duration and liquidity risks can rise with equities.
- Ignoring non-investment income: a job, business or property tied to technology may already make your household economically concentrated.
- Rebalancing by headline: selling after a fall and buying a new thematic fund can lock in losses and shift risk rather than reduce it.
- Forgetting cash needs: an otherwise diversified portfolio can fail if an illiquid position must be sold to meet a bill.
- Applying the FCA guideline mechanically: a general high-risk rule of thumb is not a personal AI limit.
- Failing to revisit the map: index weights, fund holdings, bond ratings and AI revenue can change; review after major rebalances and at least on a regular schedule.
What should I do next?
Download holdings for every account, consolidate repeated issuers and classify direct, supply-chain and financing dependencies. Set written single-name and theme limits, then choose equity and bond exposures that differ by size, sector, geography, style, issuer, credit quality, duration and maturity. Use contributions and maturing bonds before taxable sales, and test the portfolio against valuation, adoption, policy, infrastructure, credit and correlation shocks. If the result would jeopardise spending or trigger forced selling, reduce the dependency gradually with advice suited to your tax and regulatory jurisdiction.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I check for AI concentration in index funds?
Review holdings whenever a fund changes its index, after major market moves, and on a regular portfolio review schedule. Holdings reports can lag, so note each report date and use the same date range when comparing funds.
Does owning an international fund remove U.S. AI concentration?
Not necessarily. International funds can still hold the same global mega-cap companies or suppliers, and their revenue may remain tied to one AI investment cycle. Check country weights, top holdings and economic dependencies rather than the fund’s domicile.
Are short-term bonds safer than long-term bonds in an AI shock?
They generally have less sensitivity to interest-rate changes, but safety also depends on issuer credit, liquidity and currency. A short-term corporate bond tied to stressed infrastructure can lose more than a longer, high-quality government bond.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I sell every stock that benefits from AI?
No. The objective is a risk budget and a diversified portfolio, not a prediction that AI will fail. Trimming duplicated or oversized exposure while retaining an amount consistent with your horizon can avoid turning a concentration problem into a market-timing decision.
