To reduce AI storage bottlenecks without slowing training, first prove that data loading or checkpoint writes are delaying training steps. Then address the measured cause: cache or stage data that is reread, improve the reader and storage access pattern, or change how checkpoints are written. Faster storage helps only when storage is on the critical path; a high sequential-throughput figure by itself does not predict faster model training.

Measure on the actual framework, data, cluster, and expected concurrency. NVIDIA’s storage guidance emphasizes sustained performance, latency under load, complete data paths, and recovery—not just peak bandwidth.

How do I tell whether storage is slowing training?

Look for evidence that the training job is waiting on I/O, rather than assuming that low GPU utilization means the storage system is at fault. A faster path can improve progress only when data movement or checkpointing contributes to step time or leaves the GPUs idle. If data I/O is fully overlapped with computation, reducing its duration may not make training finish sooner.

Measure these signals together over representative training runs:

  • Training behavior: per-step input wait, step-time variation, GPU utilization, and time spent in checkpoint writes.
  • Storage behavior: read and write throughput, latency, and queueing. Examine both typical and tail latency; a system that looks fast on average may still have disruptive slow periods.
  • Cluster path: network counters and the actual route between the training process, storage system, and GPU.
  • Cache behavior: compare cold-cache and warm-cache runs, and note whether the active data set fits in the cache available to the job.

Repeat measurements with the concurrency you expect in production. A single job on an otherwise idle system cannot establish how the same storage path will behave when other jobs are reading, writing, or checkpointing. NVIDIA’s current storage qualification guidance considers sustained throughput, scale, stability, p50-to-p99 latency behavior, data paths, failures, recovery, and operational response.

Use step time to locate the delay

Compare input wait and checkpoint duration with the training step timeline. If input wait grows at the same time as storage latency or queueing, investigate the read path. If training pauses around checkpoint completion, investigate checkpoint behavior and writes. If neither tracks the slowdown, storage may not be the limiting factor. These comparisons help narrow the investigation; they do not substitute for a controlled run on the target workload.

Benchmark the workload, not a headline number

A storage benchmark is useful when its access pattern resembles the job’s real reads and writes. Training may reread a data set, access many files concurrently, issue small or random I/O, or write checkpoints while other work is active. A peak sequential read result does not tell you how a system will handle those patterns, nor does it establish a training speedup. Compare cold and warm cache, concurrent jobs, and checkpoint activity under otherwise comparable conditions.

What should I fix first: caching, the data path, or checkpointing?

Choose the intervention that matches the delay you measured. Repeated reads make caching worth investigating; inefficient readers or file placement point to the access path; pauses during saves point to checkpointing. Avoid changing several parts of the pipeline at once, because that makes it harder to tell which change helped.

Observed pattern First area to investigate What to validate
Repeated reads and a working set that can fit in cache Shared-filesystem RAM caching or local NVMe cache/staging Whether warm-cache runs reduce input wait, and whether cache behavior holds at expected concurrency
High input wait despite storage capacity, or a reader that uses only one stream Reader concurrency, file layout, and how storage targets are used Whether the application actually issues parallel reads and uses the available path
Training stalls during saves Checkpoint semantics, background writes, and supported staging options Write completion, memory overhead, durable flush, and recovery after failure
Data transfers appear on the critical path and the application/system supports the direct path GPUDirect Storage (GDS) eligibility A controlled comparison on the real data path, including any CPU-side parsing or processing

These are investigation paths, not guarantees. A change is useful only if it addresses the measured bottleneck without weakening the job’s data or recovery requirements.

Can caching or local NVMe keep GPUs fed?

It can when training rereads data and the cache captures the active working set. NVIDIA’s H200 and GB200 architecture guidance describes shared-filesystem RAM and local NVMe as ways to avoid retrieving reused data across the network. The benefit depends on the access pattern, working-set size, cache configuration, and repeat use; caching is less useful for a one-pass job or a working set that overwhelms the available cache.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the job can reuse cached data

Before adding or reconfiguring a cache, determine what data the job reads repeatedly and how much of it is active during training. A cold-cache run shows the cost of fetching data without reuse; a warm-cache run helps indicate whether caching can reduce that cost. If warm-cache behavior is not better, investigate whether the cache is being populated and used as expected before assuming that more cache capacity will help.

Shared filesystems may use RAM as a first cache, while local NVMe can cache or stage shared-storage data on supported systems. NVIDIA’s DGX GB rack-scale user guide, updated September 17, 2026, documents one system-specific example: configured E1.s NVMe drives can cache shared-storage data through cachefilesd. That describes a particular supported implementation, not a general instruction to install a local SSD or enable the same configuration on unrelated hardware.

Keep cache and staging distinct from durable storage

A cache is useful for access speed, but it is not automatically the authoritative copy of a data set or checkpoint. On systems designed for it, local NVMe can also serve as a temporary landing zone before a checkpoint is flushed to shared storage. NVIDIA’s rack guide also describes local NVMe as a destination for smaller, very frequent within-epoch checkpoints in its specific system context. Treat those as architecture-dependent options: verify the platform, failure behavior, and intended durable destination before relying on a local device.

How much storage throughput does model training need?

There is no universal throughput target that guarantees a particular training speed. NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD H200 reference architecture gives different single-node read and write figures for workload classes; they are system-specific architecture guidelines, not minimums for arbitrary clusters or predictions of speedup.

H200 reference workload class Single-node read Single-node write How NVIDIA describes the workload fit
Good 4 GB/s 2 GB/s NLP workloads with data sets generally fitting in local cache
Better 8 GB/s 4 GB/s Compressed image, audio, and text training, including LLM training
Best 40 GB/s 20 GB/s Large video/image and other workloads with data sets beyond cache or substantial first-epoch I/O needs

These figures come from NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD H200 reference architecture. Its workload examples for the “Best” class also include offline inference, ETL, stable diffusion, 3D image, genomics, and protein prediction. The figures are not a general scale-up formula: aggregate requirements differ with the system configuration and number of nodes. The architecture page’s publication date is not stated.

Use the table as a reference point only if the system and workload context is relevant. To size another environment, measure representative data and access patterns at the intended node count, with expected concurrent jobs, realistic cache state, and checkpoint activity. Compare both node-level behavior and aggregate storage behavior; an impressive aggregate number does not prove that an individual training node receives data at the rate it needs.

Match the storage path to the I/O shape

NVIDIA’s GB200 architecture guidance calls out small and random I/O, multi-threaded reads and writes, peak node performance, and aggregate filesystem performance. It notes that many deep-learning workloads tend to be read-dominant, while also distinguishing computer-vision data needs from NLP/LLM checkpoint demands. Those differences make workload-specific validation more useful than selecting a target from a model name alone.

How can I reduce checkpoint stalls without losing recoverability?

First establish whether checkpoint writes are synchronous and whether they pause forward progress. Synchronous checkpointing waits for the write to finish before training continues. NVIDIA’s current Certified Storage guidance describes asynchronous checkpointing as copying parameters to CPU memory first, then writing in the background; that can reduce immediate disruption and write-bandwidth pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Validate asynchronous checkpoint behavior

Asynchronous saving is not free, and support and semantics depend on the framework and system. Before adopting it, verify that the job can continue safely while a checkpoint is being written and that the save is actually complete before the next operational dependency relies on it. Measure CPU-memory overhead and checkpoint duration, and test what happens if a process or system fails during a save. Do not infer a completion guarantee from the fact that training resumed promptly.

Use local staging only with a durable flush plan

On supported systems, local NVMe may provide a faster temporary checkpoint destination, with a later flush to reliable shared storage. Measure the full path—including staging and the durable flush—rather than counting only the first write. A fast local copy is not a complete recovery strategy if the checkpoint has not reached its intended reliable destination.

When does GPUDirect Storage help?

GPUDirect Storage can create a direct DMA path between GPU memory and storage that avoids a CPU bounce buffer. It is relevant only when I/O is a significant part of the performance problem and the application and system support the required transfer path. NVIDIA’s GPUDirect Storage Design Guide states: “If computation time is far greater than the IO time, then GPUDirect Storage provides little benefit.”

Check that transfers are explicit and that the supported application, storage, and system path actually applies to the job. If CPU parsing or processing is needed before or after computation, bypassing a CPU bounce buffer may not remove that work. Likewise, if storage I/O overlaps computation completely, it may not be limiting training progress. Benchmark a controlled run with the real data path and compare step time and GPU idle behavior; do not treat GDS as a universal switch for faster training.

Could the loader or file layout be leaving storage bandwidth unused?

Yes. A reader that issues too little parallel I/O can underuse a storage system even when that system has spare capacity. NVIDIA’s Dynamo development guide describes cold model-weight loading from a parallel filesystem that may be limited by a single-stream loader with small effective I/O or by a file residing on one storage target. It suggests examining loader concurrency and filesystem striping.

Use that example as a diagnostic clue, not a universal prescription for training datasets. The guide addresses cold model-weight loading, and its development documentation may change. For a training job, inspect how many readers are active, what files they access, whether reads are small or random, and whether storage targets are actually being used in parallel. Change concurrency or layout only when measurements point to that part of the path, then confirm the result on the training workload itself.

How should I compare storage options for an AI cluster?

Compare options against the behavior the job needs, not a single peak-bandwidth claim. NVIDIA’s storage qualification and GB200 architecture guidance support evaluating the following dimensions together:

  • Sustained aggregate reads and writes: measure with the number of concurrent jobs expected, not only in isolation.
  • Latency and stability: inspect p50-to-p99 behavior and queueing under load, not just an average or a best-case run.
  • I/O pattern support: check small and random I/O and multi-threaded reading and writing where the workload requires them.
  • Scaling: distinguish single-node performance from aggregate filesystem performance as nodes and jobs increase.
  • Cache fit: relate working-set size and warm-cache behavior to the available shared-memory or local-NVMe cache.
  • Checkpoint path: account for checkpoint duration, staging, and the time needed to flush a durable copy.
  • Compatibility and operations: verify GPU, filesystem, driver, and network data-path support, as well as failure recovery and operational support.

These criteria do not rank vendors or establish that one storage architecture suits every cluster. NVIDIA’s published guidance reflects NVIDIA system architectures and software paths, rather than independent comparative testing across all platforms. Verify compatibility and operational expectations for the equipment and software you intend to run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is a practical way to test an improvement?

Run a baseline and a controlled comparison using the same training workload, data, framework, cluster conditions, and concurrency. Change one part of the storage path at a time, and capture both training outcomes and storage behavior so a faster benchmark result is not mistaken for faster training.

  1. Record a baseline: capture per-step input wait, step time, GPU utilization, checkpoint duration, storage throughput and latency, queueing, and network counters.
  2. Include realistic states: compare cold and warm cache where relevant, and run with the concurrency expected in production.
  3. Choose one intervention: target cache/staging, reader or layout behavior, checkpointing, or a supported direct transfer path according to the evidence.
  4. Repeat the same measurements: check whether the targeted delay changed and whether training step progress improved, not merely whether a storage benchmark reported more bandwidth.
  5. Exercise failure and recovery: for checkpoint or staging changes, confirm completion and recovery behavior before depending on the new path operationally.

Keep the change only if it improves the training pipeline under representative conditions and preserves the required recovery behavior. When the targeted delay does not move, revisit whether storage was the limiting factor or whether the chosen change addressed the wrong part of the path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will adding a faster SSD automatically make model training faster?

No. An SSD is useful only if the system can use it for the relevant cache, staging, or checkpoint path and storage is limiting training. Compatibility and the actual data path matter; a device’s advertised speed alone does not establish a training benefit.

Does a local checkpoint count as a recoverable checkpoint?

Not necessarily. Whether it is sufficient depends on the system’s failure and recovery design, and the cited NVIDIA guidance describes local NVMe as temporary staging in supported configurations. Confirm where the durable copy resides and how it is recovered before relying on a local-only save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the H200 throughput figures minimum requirements for every LLM cluster?

No. They are workload-class reference figures in NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD H200 architecture guidance, not universal minimums for arbitrary hardware. Different cache behavior, node counts, I/O patterns, and checkpoint demands can change what a cluster needs.
