Start by measuring your pension’s total exposure to AI-related businesses across every fund—not by selling a fund with a technology label. AI-related risk can reach a portfolio through chipmakers, data-centre infrastructure, utilities, property, lenders and overlapping holdings, as well as through companies developing AI. If that combined exposure does not fit your retirement goals or risk tolerance, consider a measured change only after checking its costs, restrictions and effect on your wider plan.
What does AI exposure in a pension portfolio include?
AI exposure is broader than owning shares in companies whose main business is developing AI. A pension fund may also hold businesses that supply the computing equipment, buildings, electricity or financing associated with AI investment. A portfolio can therefore have significant AI-related exposure even when no fund is labelled “AI” and no single holding looks dominant.

Direct exposure: developers and major beneficiaries
Direct exposure includes companies developing AI products or services, and companies whose business prospects or valuations are strongly linked to expectations about AI. Those links can change as businesses evolve, so a company name alone does not tell you how much of its value depends on AI-related activity.
Indirect exposure: the infrastructure and financing chain
Indirect exposure can include semiconductor businesses, data-centre infrastructure, utilities and property supporting data-centre construction, and lenders or other businesses whose valuations or financing are closely tied to AI investment. These businesses do not all face the same risks. A supplier may benefit from investment continuing, while a lender or property owner may be exposed to the consequences if expected investment or demand weakens.

This is why the useful question is not simply “Does my pension own AI stocks?” Ask what economic exposures sit behind the holdings, how large they are, and whether several funds rely on the same companies or investment theme.
How much AI exposure is in my pension?
You need a whole-portfolio view, including look-through information about the underlying investments in each fund. Begin with the default arrangement or main pension fund, then include every other fund you hold; examine repeated holdings and indirect exposure rather than treating each fund in isolation.
Gather the information before deciding
- List every pension and fund. Include the default arrangement and any self-selected funds. If you have more than one pension, keep each account identifiable while also considering your overall retirement portfolio.
- Request current holdings and look-through data. Ask the provider, trustees or investment manager for the underlying holdings and any available information about exposure to AI developers, related infrastructure and other AI-linked businesses. Ask what date the data represents and how the provider defines an AI-related holding.
- Record each fund’s share of your portfolio. A fund’s holdings matter in proportion to how much of your pension is invested in that fund. Use the same valuation date where possible; otherwise, note the different dates so you do not mistake stale or mismatched data for a precise comparison.
- Identify overlap. Mark issuers and sectors that appear in more than one fund. A global index fund and an actively managed fund may both hold the same large companies, so the number of funds you own is not a measure of how many independent exposures you have.
- Separate direct from indirect links. Group holdings into direct AI developers, semiconductor and data-centre infrastructure, supporting utilities and property, and lenders or other businesses strongly linked to AI investment. Record uncertainty rather than treating every company in a related sector as equally exposed.
How to interpret the result
There is no regulator-provided universal “safe AI percentage” for a pension portfolio. A single percentage cannot, by itself, tell you whether an allocation is appropriate: the answer depends on your retirement objectives, investment horizon, liquidity needs, risk tolerance and the rest of your assets and liabilities.
Use any exposure estimate as a way to spot concentration and ask better questions—not as a score that automatically calls for a switch. If the provider’s data cannot establish an exact look-through percentage, you can still use the holdings it supplies to identify repeated issuers, sectors and potential gaps. Do not present an estimate as a precise total when the underlying information does not support that precision.
Why can a diversified pension still be concentrated in AI?
A pension spread across several funds, sectors or regions can still rely heavily on the same AI-linked companies or investment cycle. The concentration may be obscured by fund labels, indirect holdings and the way some funds allocate money to large companies.
Market-capitalisation weighting can increase exposure
In a market-capitalisation-weighted passive fund, a company’s weight reflects its relative market size. When AI-linked companies rise in value, their share of such a fund can grow too. That may increase exposure without you actively choosing to buy more units in those individual companies.

Several funds may own the same companies
Two funds with different names or strategies can hold many of the same issuers. A portfolio made up of several funds can therefore be less diversified than it looks. Review issuer overlap and sector overlap across the full allocation, not just within each fund’s fact sheet.
Sector labels do not reveal every connection
A fund may classify holdings by industry rather than by their relationship to AI. Related infrastructure and financing exposures may sit outside a technology allocation. Look-through information is useful because it helps you examine what the fund owns, not only what its marketing or category label says.
What do the available fund figures tell you—and what do they not tell you?
Published figures can show that AI exposure varies across funds, but they are not a personal target or a limit for your pension. The following statistics refer to a fund sample and a specific observation period, not to all funds or to an ideal allocation.
| Measure | Reported finding | What it means for an individual pension |
|---|---|---|
| Funds with no AI-company exposure | More than one quarter in the ESMA report’s fund sample, using June 2024 data | This describes the sampled funds at that date; it does not mean a fund with no identified AI-company exposure has no related indirect exposure. |
| Funds with exposure above 15% | Another quarter of funds in the ESMA sample, using June 2024 data | The figure illustrates variation among sampled funds; it is not a recommended ceiling for a pension. |
| Funds with exposure above 27.5% | 10% of funds in the ESMA sample, using June 2024 data | This is a sample statistic, not an assessment of whether a particular member’s allocation is suitable. |
| Global private AI investment growth | 127.5% year-on-year increase, reported by The Pensions Regulator in 2025 | This is a market-investment figure, not a return forecast, pension holding measure or exposure limit. |
The figures should be read with their date and scope intact. ESMA’s 2025 report used June 2024 data, and The Pensions Regulator’s 2025 figure concerns global private AI investment. Neither tells you how much of your own pension is exposed or what allocation is right for you.
How should I stress-test my pension for an AI-led downturn?
Ask how your whole portfolio might behave in a severe but plausible downturn connected to AI, rather than relying on a forecast that one particular event will happen. The assessment should include the possibility that losses spread across related sectors, liquidity needs increase and leverage amplifies the effect.
Build a scenario around your actual holdings
- Start with the exposure map. Use the holdings and overlap review to identify which parts of the portfolio could be affected if AI-linked businesses fall in value.
- Test connected declines. Consider falling AI-linked equity prices alongside higher correlations between technology and related sectors. A scenario should not assume that apparently different holdings will always move independently when markets are under stress.
- Include liquidity demands. Ask whether the portfolio or scheme could meet expected cash needs under stress, and whether any holdings would be difficult to sell when liquidity is most needed.
- Check leverage effects. Where the scheme or investment arrangement has leverage, consider how it could affect losses or liquidity demands in the scenario.
- Compare outcomes with objectives. Evaluate the result against the scheme’s risk appetite, retirement objectives and liquidity needs. A scenario is useful only if it informs a decision about those needs.
For occupational schemes, The Pensions Regulator’s guidance puts the emphasis on assessing exposure, testing resilience and challenging advisers. Its executive director of market oversight, Ben Gunnee, said: “We expect all schemes to maintain high standards of investment governance and manage risk over the short, medium and long term.” He also said: “That is why trustees should assess their AI-related exposure, test portfolio resilience and challenge advisers now to understand how market developments could affect their investments under different market conditions.”
Those statements are directed to scheme governance, not a personal instruction to sell or buy a particular fund. The regulator’s position is that trustees should take action proportionate to their scheme’s circumstances.

What can I change if my exposure does not fit my goals?
If the measured exposure or stress-test result is inconsistent with your objectives, review the allocation and the reasons behind it before making a change. Possible responses include rebalancing, choosing a genuinely broader fund, reducing duplicated active and passive exposure, or adding assets with different risk drivers.
Rebalance the allocation
Rebalancing means changing the proportions assigned to existing investments so the portfolio better matches the allocation you intend to hold. It may reduce an unintended concentration, but it does not eliminate market risk or guarantee a better outcome. Check how the adjustment affects the full portfolio, not just one AI-linked holding.
Choose a genuinely broader fund
A broader fund may offer exposure across more issuers, sectors or regions, but its label alone does not establish that it reduces AI concentration. Compare its underlying holdings, weighting approach and overlap with the funds you already own. A fund that adds new names while retaining substantial exposure to the same large companies may change the appearance of the portfolio more than its underlying risk.
Reduce duplication across funds
If active and passive funds repeatedly hold the same issuers, reducing unnecessary duplication may make the portfolio easier to understand and manage. Before removing a fund, check what role it serves, what else it holds and whether its removal changes the balance of your retirement investments in a way you did not intend.
Consider assets with different risk drivers
Assets with different risk drivers may reduce dependence on one group of companies, but diversification is not a promise that losses cannot occur. Assess how the proposed asset behaves under stress, whether it meets your liquidity needs and what charges or restrictions apply. A change intended to lower AI exposure should not create a mismatch with the rest of your retirement plan.
For each option, compare direct and indirect AI exposure, concentration by issuer, sector and region, overlap with existing funds, passive market-cap weighting versus active constraints, and the mix of equities, bonds and alternative assets. Also consider likely downside and liquidity behaviour under stress, fees and transaction costs, tax and transfer restrictions, and fit with your retirement date, liabilities and risk tolerance.
What should I check before moving pension money?
A fund change can have consequences beyond its investment exposure. Check the rules of your specific pension and the effect on your plan before you sell, switch or transfer.

- Charges and transaction costs: Find out whether the current and proposed investments carry different charges or costs for making the change.
- Tax and transfer restrictions: Ask whether the proposed action has tax consequences or is limited by the pension’s transfer rules.
- Dealing restrictions: Check when and how a switch can be made, and whether any restrictions affect your ability to act.
- Guarantees: Establish whether you would give up a guarantee or other feature attached to your existing arrangement.
- Age and retirement date: Consider whether the change fits when you expect to use the pension and the retirement objectives it is meant to support.
- Liquidity and risk tolerance: Review whether the revised portfolio can meet your needs and whether its potential losses remain within your tolerance.
These checks are especially important when considering a transfer or a change to more than one fund. The same exposure reduction can have different implications depending on the pension arrangement and the member’s circumstances; a general article cannot establish whether an individual switch is suitable.

Should I switch funds because of an AI bubble?
A headline about an AI boom or bubble is not, by itself, a sound basis for a pension switch. First establish what you own, why you own it and how a severe but plausible downturn would affect your objectives.
For defined-contribution members, selling after a fall can crystallise losses, while missing a later recovery can damage retirement outcomes. That does not mean you should ignore a genuine concentration problem. It means the decision should be based on your portfolio, needs and risk assessment rather than an attempt to time the market in response to a headline.
Write down the reason for a proposed change, the exposure it addresses, the alternatives you considered and the costs or restrictions you checked. A written decision record can help distinguish a planned adjustment from a reaction to recent market moves. Where you need a personalised recommendation, consider advice from an appropriately authorised adviser.
Who should act on AI-related pension risk?
The right process depends partly on the kind of pension and the decision-maker. The Pensions Regulator’s AI-concentration guidance is addressed to trustees of UK occupational schemes; FCA material is UK investor guidance, while OECD principles are international. Their scopes should not be conflated with personal investment advice.

If you are a member of an occupational scheme
Trustees and scheme investment decision-makers are responsible for investment governance and risk management. The Pensions Regulator expects schemes to assess AI-related exposure, test portfolio resilience and challenge advisers about how market developments could affect investments under different conditions. Its guidance says actions should be proportionate to the circumstances of the scheme.
If you have a personal pension
Ask the provider what holdings and look-through data it can supply, and what the data’s date and definitions are. If you want a recommendation tailored to your circumstances, seek advice from an appropriately authorised adviser rather than treating general guidance as a personal allocation instruction.
Best Value
The core decision process is similar in either case—measure, assess the downside, compare with objectives and costs, then document the decision—but responsibility and available information differ. No regulator cited here sets a universal AI-exposure cap for every pension.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tell how much AI is in my pension from the fund name?
No. A name or category can signal a strategy, but it does not show every underlying holding or its weight. Ask for holdings information and the provider’s definitions before drawing conclusions from a label.
Does a fund with no AI-company exposure mean my pension has no AI risk?
Not necessarily. The ESMA sample statistic refers to AI-company exposure in sampled funds, while indirect exposure through related infrastructure, financing or other businesses is a separate question to investigate.
Are the June 2024 AI-fund figures still a current snapshot?
They are dated observations reported by ESMA in 2025 using June 2024 data, not a live measure. Holdings and market values can change, so use current provider data when evaluating your own allocation.
Does the 127.5% growth figure mean AI-related pension investments returned 127.5%?
No. The Pensions Regulator’s 2025 figure concerns year-on-year growth in global private AI investment. It is not a pension return, a forecast or a measure of an individual portfolio’s holdings.
