Do not judge an email’s safety by its spelling or polish. Generative AI can produce fluent, well-translated messages, copy a company’s tone, personalize a request and even support a convincing fake website or chatbot. To recognize an AI-assisted phishing email, verify the sender identity, destination domain, requested action, urgency and context—then confirm the request through a website, phone number or statement you obtained independently. Never click a suspicious link, open its attachment, reply or use its unsubscribe link just to investigate. Report the message through your mail provider and the appropriate fraud service before deleting it. If you clicked or disclosed information, contact the affected organization through a trusted channel, change exposed credentials, enable multifactor authentication and scan for malware when a download may have occurred.
Why is AI-generated phishing harder to recognize?
AI changes the clues that people traditionally used to judge phishing. Criminals can ask generative systems to write natural-sounding messages, translate them into many languages, imitate a company’s style, create believable profiles and scale thousands of variations. The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warned on December 3, 2024, that criminals exploit generative AI “to commit fraud on a larger scale which increases the believability of their schemes.”

A message may therefore contain a realistic logo, correct terminology and a polished explanation while still leading to credential theft, payment fraud or malware. The technology does not make every scam sophisticated, but it removes obvious writing errors and makes copy-and-paste detection less reliable.

AI authorship is not reliably provable from the text alone. Treat the email as an identity-and-request verification problem: establish who sent it, what it wants you to do, where that action leads and whether the request makes sense for your relationship with the organization.
What signs should I check in a suspicious email?
The strongest indicators concern behavior and technical details, not writing quality. Use this checklist before taking any action.
| Signal | What to inspect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sender identity | Full address, display name, reply-to address and domain spelling | A familiar name can hide an unrelated mailbox; one changed letter, symbol or number can create a look-alike address. |
| Destination | Where a button or link would go, including shortened links and the real domain | A branded message can redirect to a domain controlled by an attacker. |
| Pressure | Urgency, threats, authority claims, scarcity, emotional language or a current-event hook | These tactics try to make you act before you verify. |
| Requested action | Password, one-time code, bank detail, gift card, wire, cryptocurrency or unexpected payment | High-value credentials and irreversible payments are common phishing objectives. |
| Context | Whether you have an account, expected the message or normally receive this type of notice | A realistic logo is weak evidence if the underlying relationship does not exist. |
| Attachments | Unexpected documents, archives, executable files or requests to enable macros | An attachment can deliver malware or send you to a counterfeit sign-in page. |
FBI guidance describes spoofing as changing one letter, symbol or number in an address, phone number or URL. Compare the organizational domain character by character; a display name alone is not authentication.
How do I inspect the sender without interacting with the message?
Use the mail application’s message details or “show original” view, but do not reply or follow any embedded instruction. Check the address that actually sent the message and the reply-to address separately.
- Expand the sender details. A display name such as “Payroll” or “Your bank” can be paired with a personal or misspelled domain.
- Read the domain from right to left. Identify the final registered domain before the first slash. Subdomains and long prefixes do not turn an attacker’s domain into the organization’s domain.
- Compare with a known message. Use an old statement, saved contact or address in your organization’s directory—not a contact detail supplied by the suspicious email.
- Check the reply-to field. A mismatch is not automatically malicious, but an unexpected external reply address deserves independent verification.
- Consider authentication results carefully. Passing sender-policy checks can show that a domain authorized the sending server; it does not prove the domain itself is legitimate or that the request is safe.
Do not assume that a familiar logo, signature or copied legal disclaimer validates the sender. Those elements are easy to reproduce and can be generated automatically.

How can I check a link safely?
Do not click a suspicious link to “see where it goes.” If your mail client offers a safe hover preview, read the destination without opening it; otherwise, independently navigate to the organization’s known website by typing an address you already trust or using a saved bookmark.
- Look for a misspelled or substituted domain, extra words, unusual top-level domain or a shortened URL.
- Be cautious when a link uses a legitimate hosting service but the page itself asks for credentials or payment.
- Do not enter a one-time code, password or card number merely because a page displays the right logo.
- For a mobile message, press and hold only if your device shows the destination without opening it; when in doubt, use an independent device or browser session.
An HTTPS padlock indicates an encrypted connection, not that the site belongs to the claimed organization. Attackers can obtain certificates for deceptive domains.
How do I verify an unexpected request?
Verify through a channel you obtained independently. Open the organization’s official site from a saved bookmark, use a number printed on a payment card or statement, or contact a known colleague through your normal directory. Never call a number, open a link or use a support address supplied by the suspicious message.
Ask the organization to confirm the exact action, amount, account and deadline. If the request involves a transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency, payroll change or one-time code, require a second person or an established callback procedure. Genuine government agencies generally do not request sensitive information by text, and an email demanding secrecy or immediate action should be treated as high risk.
Context is decisive. If you have no account with the named service, were not expecting a delivery or did not initiate a password reset, do not “test” the message by signing in. A legitimate notification can be verified from the account’s independently opened dashboard.

What should I do when an email looks like phishing?
Use this sequence to preserve evidence, reduce exposure and get the message routed to the people who can investigate it.
- Stop. Do not click, reply, download, call, enter information or use the message’s unsubscribe link.
- Preserve the message. Keep the original in your mailbox long enough to report it; forwarding as an attachment can preserve technical headers when your provider supports that option.
- Report it in your mail service. Use the built-in “Report phishing” or equivalent control rather than simply marking it as spam. This supplies signals the provider can use to block related messages.
- Verify separately. If the message claims to be from a bank, employer, government office or service, contact that organization through a trusted website, statement, card or directory entry.
- Use the appropriate national route. Choose the reporting channel for your country and whether money or personal data was lost.
- Delete it after reporting. Empty the trash only after you are confident the report has been submitted and any needed evidence is retained.
Do not forward a suspicious email broadly inside your organization without following its security process; a forwarded copy can expose active links or personal data to other recipients.
Where should I report a phishing email?
Report both to your email provider and, when appropriate, to a national fraud or cybercrime service. The correct destination depends on your location and whether the incident caused a loss.
| Situation | United States | United Kingdom |
|---|---|---|
| Suspicious email with no known loss | Use the mail provider’s phishing control. Consumers can submit a report through ReportFraud.gov or send the message to APWG at [email protected]. | Forward the suspicious email to [email protected], as advised by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). |
| Internet-enabled crime, attempted fraud or financial loss | File a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3); also notify the bank or payment service immediately. | Use the UK’s Report Fraud service. Follow the NCSC’s local route for Scotland when applicable, and contact your bank without delay. |
| Identity theft or exposed personal information | Use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps and identity-theft reporting, in addition to contacting the affected organization. | Use Report Fraud or the relevant police route, and follow instructions from the affected service and your bank. |
NCSC’s scam-email guidance, published November 26, 2021 and reviewed September 5, 2022, specifically says: “If you have received an email which you’re not quite sure about, forward it to [email protected]”. Reporting helps investigators and providers connect campaigns; it does not guarantee that a lost payment can be recovered.
What if I clicked, opened an attachment or entered information?
Act immediately, but use a clean device where possible. The right response depends on what was exposed.

If you entered a password or one-time code
- Change the password from a trusted device, starting with the affected account.
- Change it anywhere else you reused it; use unique passwords or passkeys.
- Review active sessions, recovery addresses, forwarding rules and recent sign-ins, and revoke sessions you do not recognize.
- Enable multifactor authentication. A phishing-resistant hardware security key using FIDO2 offers stronger protection against counterfeit sign-in pages than a code typed into a site.
If you exposed bank or payment details
- Call the bank or payment provider using the number on your card, statement or official app.
- Ask whether transfers, cards, direct debits or payees should be blocked or replaced.
- Preserve transaction records and the original message for investigators.
If a file may have downloaded malware
- Disconnect the device from networks if you see suspicious activity, while avoiding actions that destroy evidence needed by your security team.
- Run updated security software and a full scan; involve your organization’s IT or security team for a work device.
- Update the operating system, browser and applications after containment, and reset credentials from a separate clean device.
Tell the organization whose account was impersonated so it can protect the account and warn other customers. In the United States, use IdentityTheft.gov when personal information was misused; elsewhere, use the applicable national fraud service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I compare two suspicious messages?
Compare the messages on risk factors, not on which one sounds more professional. A fluent message can be more dangerous precisely because AI removed obvious errors.
| Comparison question | Safer interpretation | Risk signal |
|---|---|---|
| Is the sender domain authentic? | It exactly matches a domain you independently know and the reply-to is consistent. | Look-alike spelling, unrelated domain or unexplained reply-to address. |
| Was the request expected? | You initiated the action and can see it in the independently opened account. | No account, no recent transaction or a surprise reset, invoice or delivery. |
| What pressure is applied? | Normal notice with time to verify. | Threats, secrecy, authority, scarcity or a deadline designed to prevent checking. |
| What does it request? | Routine information you can provide through the official portal. | Password, code, payment, gift card, cryptocurrency or bank-detail change. |
| What do links and files do? | You can reach the same task by navigating independently. | Shortened link, unexpected attachment or instruction to bypass normal security. |
| What did independent verification show? | The organization confirms the request through a known channel. | The organization cannot confirm it or says the message is false. |
Can grammar or an AI detector tell me whether an email is safe?
No. Grammar quality, punctuation and translation quality are weak signals because generative AI can make fraudulent prose fluent. Conversely, a real company message may contain a typo or be written by a non-native speaker.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
AI-detection tools also cannot establish that a particular sender authorized a request. They may classify ordinary writing incorrectly and do not validate links, domains, payment instructions or account context. Use identity, destination and independent confirmation instead.
How can organizations reduce successful AI-assisted phishing?
Technical controls should support, not replace, verification procedures. Configure mail filtering and reporting buttons, monitor look-alike domains, and train staff to pause on payment, payroll and credential requests. Require an out-of-band callback for changes to bank details or urgent transfers.
Best Value
Enforce multifactor authentication for email, financial systems and administrator accounts, preferably with phishing-resistant security keys. Limit mailbox forwarding rules, alert on suspicious sign-ins and maintain a tested process for disabling compromised accounts. Make the reporting path easy to find so employees can submit the original message without forwarding it to a large group.
What mistakes make phishing incidents worse?
- Clicking to investigate: Opening a page can expose credentials or trigger a download; inspect safely or navigate independently.
- Calling the message’s number: An attacker-controlled “support” line can persuade you to install software or reveal a code.
- Relying on a logo or perfect tone: Branding and polished language are cheap to copy or generate.
- Only deleting: Deletion removes evidence and prevents providers or authorities from correlating a campaign.
- Changing one password only: Reused credentials and active sessions can leave other accounts exposed.
- Waiting for certainty: Report a credible suspicion; you do not need to prove AI authorship before using the phishing control.
What is the practical rule for AI-generated phishing?
Assume that a polished, personalized message can be fraudulent until its sender and request are confirmed through a channel you chose independently. Stop interaction, report it, and respond quickly if any information or device access was exposed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI-written phishing email pass my company’s spam filter?
Yes. Filters use many signals, and a newly generated message may not match known spam patterns. Domain authentication, attachment controls, employee reporting and multifactor authentication provide additional layers when content-based filtering misses it.
Is forwarding a suspicious email to a friend a safe way to ask for advice?
It can spread a malicious link or expose private information. Ask through a separate message or phone call, and use your provider’s reporting workflow or your organization’s security channel for the original email.
Should I report a message if I am only unsure and did not lose money?
Yes. Suspicion is enough to use the mail client’s phishing control and the relevant national reporting route. Early reports can help providers and investigators connect related campaigns even when no one has paid.
What evidence should I keep after a phishing incident?
Retain the original message, full headers when available, screenshots of pages, transaction records, phone numbers used and a timeline of what happened. Store copies securely and provide them to your bank, employer or reporting authority rather than posting them publicly.
Does using multifactor authentication eliminate phishing risk?
No. It reduces the damage from stolen passwords, but attackers can still trick users into approving a login or surrendering recovery details. Phishing-resistant security keys and careful verification of every sign-in prompt provide stronger protection.
