Start with Mass Effect: Revelation, then play the original Mass Effect. After that, read Incursion, Redemption and Ascension around Mass Effect 2, continue with Retribution, and finish the Shepard-era material before Mass Effect 3. The games work on their own, so the books and comics are enrichment rather than prerequisites. Treat the Andromeda novels and comics as a separate branch, ending with Mass Effect: Andromeda.

What should a new fan read first?
Revelation is the best first book, but the first game is the essential next step. The novel is a prequel centered on David Anderson, Kahlee Sanders and Saren Arterius, so it supplies political and personal context without assuming that you know the wider tie-in catalogue. Playing Mass Effect immediately afterward keeps the main story in the form it was designed to be experienced.
Do not postpone the games until you have finished every novel and comic. The trilogy was made to stand alone, and a complete tie-in marathon can introduce side characters, organizations and future plot information before the game has established them naturally.

What is the recommended Shepard-era reading order?
Use this hybrid route if you want the strongest connections to the games without turning every optional story into a prerequisite.
1. Mass Effect: Revelation
Read this first. It is a prequel to the original game and gives Anderson and Saren history that makes their positions in the opening game easier to understand. Kahlee Sanders also begins here, creating a thread that continues through later novels.

Play the original game next. Revelation adds context, but it does not replace the game’s introduction to Commander Shepard, the Normandy crew, the Citadel or the Reaper threat.
3. Mass Effect: Incursion
This short comic takes place shortly before the Collectors destroy the Normandy at the beginning of Mass Effect 2. It is a compact transition rather than a required chapter, making it easy to insert between the first and second games.
4. Mass Effect: Redemption
Liara T’Soni and Feron search for Shepard’s body in this comic. Its main value is connective: it explains the events that lead into the Lazarus Project and gives Mass Effect 2 a more developed bridge from the first game.
5. Mass Effect: Ascension
The second novel continues the Kahlee Sanders, Paul Grayson and Gillian Grayson storyline and expands the Ascension Project and Cerberus. Read it immediately before Mass Effect 2 if you want a prose-first progression, or move it just after the game if you prefer to preserve the game’s pacing.

6. Mass Effect 2
Play the second game after Redemption. The exact placement of Ascension is flexible, but Redemption is the cleaner lead-in because it directly addresses Shepard’s disappearance and recovery.
7. Mass Effect: Retribution
Read this before Mass Effect 3 when possible. It continues the Grayson arc and introduces Kai Leng, a character who appears in the third game. The novel therefore has more payoff after you know the second game’s conflicts but before the final game’s campaign.
8. Mass Effect: Inquisition and Mass Effect: Invasion
These are optional post-Collector stories. Inquisition follows C-Sec investigator Bailey, while Invasion returns to Aria and Omega during a conflict involving Cerberus. They add setting and character material but are not needed to follow the central trilogy plot.
9. Mass Effect: Conviction
Place Conviction after the Arrival downloadable content if you are following a full game-and-tie-in chronology. It follows James Vega after the incident in the Bahak system, so its position depends on including that DLC in your route.

10. Mass Effect: Deception
Treat this novel as optional and approach it with caution. It continues the Grayson and Anderson/Kahlee threads, but the first edition contained documented continuity errors; BioWare and Del Rey issued a 2012 correction statement saying, “We are currently working on a number of changes that will appear in future editions of the novel.” That history supports calling it a problematic optional entry, not declaring it definitively non-canon without a later official ruling.
11. Mass Effect: Evolution
This comic tells the Illusive Man’s origin during the First Contact War. It is one of the most useful tie-ins for readers interested in Cerberus and can be read before Mass Effect 3, or earlier if you want that backstory before meeting more of the organization in the games.

12. Mass Effect: Homeworlds
Homeworlds is a set of character vignettes rather than one continuous bridge. Its stories focus on James Vega, Tali, Garrus and Liara, and the individual episodes occur at different points, so read it as a supplement after you know those characters rather than trying to force it into one exact slot.
13. Mass Effect: Foundation
This is the longest comic series and follows Cerberus operative Rasa across events that run alongside the trilogy. Because its episodes overlap the games, it works best as completionist material after you have finished the main Shepard-era route or when you are deliberately reading parallel stories.

Finish the original trilogy here. The optional comics can deepen individual characters and factions, but the third game remains the endpoint of the Shepard-era game story.
What is the correct order for the Andromeda books and comics?
Keep Andromeda as a separate branch. Its tie-ins prepare the Initiative and its crises, but they have limited dependence on the original trilogy’s novel sequence.
15. Mass Effect: Andromeda: Initiation
This pre-launch novel involves Cora Harper and stolen Initiative technology. It is a useful introduction to the Andromeda Initiative’s preparation and to Cora’s place in that effort.
16. Mass Effect: Discovery
This comic follows turian soldier Tiran Kandros undercover inside the Andromeda Initiative. Read it after Initiation if you want a continuous pre-launch buildup, although it does not require the Shepard-era novels.

17. Mass Effect: Andromeda: Annihilation
Annihilation is a voyage story aboard the quarian ark Keelah Si’yah. Sabotage and a plague affecting its sleeping passengers drive the plot, making it a self-contained look at another ark rather than a direct continuation of Shepard’s story.
18. Mass Effect: Andromeda: Nexus Uprising
Read Nexus Uprising immediately before the game. It covers the Nexus crisis and provides the closest direct setup for the conditions you encounter when Andromeda begins.
19. Mass Effect: Andromeda
Play the game last in this branch if you want maximum pre-game context. You can also play it without any tie-ins; the three novels and the comic are supplemental rather than a locked gate.
What is the simplest publication-order route?
If you want prose without coordinating games and comics, read the seven novels in publication order:
- Revelation
- Ascension
- Retribution
- Deception
- Nexus Uprising
- Initiation
- Annihilation
The first four are the Shepard-era novels; the final three belong to Andromeda. This route is easy to follow, but it places Ascension and Retribution without the game experiences they were written to complement, and it puts the continuity-troubled Deception in the middle of the original sequence. For most first-time fans, the hybrid route is more informative and less likely to spoil game introductions.

- For spoiler control: play each main game when the route reaches it, using only the adjacent tie-ins. This avoids learning a character’s later role before the game introduces that character.
- For the shortest useful route: read Revelation, play Mass Effect, read Redemption, play Mass Effect 2, read Retribution, then play Mass Effect 3. Add Ascension if you want the Sanders and Grayson material.
- For completion: include Incursion, Inquisition, Invasion, Conviction, Evolution, Homeworlds and Foundation, while keeping Deception optional because of its documented problems.
- For an Andromeda-only experience: begin with Initiation, Discovery, Annihilation and Nexus Uprising, then play Andromeda. You do not need to complete the Shepard-era books first.
Is there one comic collection that covers the major stories?
Dark Horse’s Mass Effect: The Complete Comics is the most convenient single comic purchase. Its product description says it compiles the Mass Effect comic series in one comprehensive format, including Redemption, Evolution, Invasion, Discovery and character stories involving Garrus, Tali, Wrex and Liara.
The collection does not replace the novels. You still need the individual prose books for the Anderson/Saren prequel, the Grayson storyline and the Andromeda novels. If you are buying comics rather than trying to reconstruct every issue separately, the omnibus is the least fragmented format.

The sequence prioritizes four things: preserving game spoilers, putting each bridge story beside the game it explains, separating the original trilogy from Andromeda, and keeping optional material clearly labeled. It also gives extra weight to tie-ins that introduce or develop characters who matter in the games, while avoiding the claim that every licensed story is equally necessary.

Is Mass Effect: Deception officially non-canon?
No definitive official ruling is established here that removes it from canon. The first edition prompted a documented BioWare and Del Rey apology and planned corrections for later editions, so the safest description is an optional novel with continuity problems rather than a formally non-canon work.
How many issues are in Mass Effect: Foundation?
Foundation runs for 13 issues. Its Rasa-led stories overlap the trilogy, which is why it is better treated as a parallel completionist series than as a single point in the main order.
Does Mass Effect: The Complete Comics include the novels too?
