To compare laptop GPUs for creative work, compare complete laptops on the benchmark that most closely matches your own application and task—not GPU names or unrelated gaming scores. Check the benchmark and application versions, the relevant subtest, GPU memory, the laptop’s power and performance settings, and whether results were repeated under comparable conditions. An overall score can combine work that matters little to your project, and the same laptop-GPU model can be configured at different power levels.
This guide explains how to choose useful tests for Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Blender and Photoshop; read their scores without overclaiming; and make a fair comparison between two actual laptop configurations.

What does a creative-work GPU benchmark actually tell you?
A benchmark score is evidence about a defined workload under defined conditions. It is not a universal measure of how “fast” a laptop GPU is. A render test, a GPU-effects test, a media-decoding test and an application-wide score can all produce different comparisons because they exercise different parts of the computer.
That distinction matters because a creative application rarely relies on the GPU alone. Depending on the test, the result may also reflect the CPU, video encoding or decoding hardware, system memory, the application edition, the render backend, and the laptop’s power and thermal behavior. A score is useful when those conditions resemble your work; it can mislead when they do not.

Begin with the question you actually need answered: “Which laptop handles my multistream HEVC timeline better?” or “Which one renders this type of Blender scene faster?” Then choose a benchmark subtest that represents that work. If you instead compare headline scores across different apps or test versions, you may be comparing unlike workloads.
Which benchmark should I use for my creative application?
Choose a benchmark made for the application and task you care about. If it offers multiple categories, use the category closest to your actual project and treat the overall score as context rather than a definitive GPU ranking.

Premiere Pro: match the codec and timeline
Puget Bench for Premiere Pro runs within Premiere and separates encoding, media processing, realistic timelines and GPU effects. That separation lets you ask a more useful question than “Which laptop has the higher overall score?” If you edit multistream HEVC, for example, a relevant media-processing or realistic-timeline result is likely more informative than an unrelated H.264 export test.
Read the benchmark’s description of each test before interpreting its score. Puget identifies whether hardware encoding or decoding, the CPU, or the GPU is the principal contributor. Its processing, real-world and GPU-effects tests use a null encoder at 3840 × 2160 to remove codec encoding and disk writing from those measurements. They should not be described as direct measurements of live timeline playback: they isolate particular processing or effects work rather than replicating every part of an editing session.
Also remember that Puget says its major Premiere scores contribute equally to the Overall Score. Equal weighting is not the same as weighting according to your project. A high overall result can therefore conceal a weaker result in the category you rely on most.
DaVinci Resolve: verify edition and test coverage
Puget Bench for Resolve separates encoding, media processing, real-world timelines, Fusion, GPU effects and AI. Basic, Standard and Extended editions contain different test sets, so confirm which edition produced each score before comparing results.

The Resolve edition is just as important. Puget documents material differences between Free and Studio, including GPU H.264/HEVC encoding and decoding, OpenFX, noise reduction and AI. A missing test or a lower score from a different edition does not automatically mean that a laptop’s GPU is slower. Puget says the Free edition at version 21.1 or newer cannot run its benchmark because scripting support was removed. Its documentation also cautions that the Free edition’s platform-dependent encoding behavior makes it unsuitable for comparing pure hardware performance between Mac and Windows.
Blender: read the Cycles score as a Cycles score
Blender Open Data defines its benchmark score as estimated path-tracing samples per minute summed across benchmark scenes. A higher score means faster rendering in that benchmark; it does not establish that the machine will be faster at video editing, modeling, or every other Blender operation.
Filter results to the same Blender version and compute backend. Then check the number of submissions behind a device-name median. The results are community submissions, not controlled tests of otherwise identical laptops. A median may combine systems with different configurations and operating conditions, so it is a reference point—not a measured guarantee for the exact laptop you are considering.
Photoshop: application performance is not GPU-only performance
Puget Bench for Photoshop includes general and filter workloads. Use those results to understand Photoshop performance, not to rank laptop GPUs in isolation. Puget notes that even technically GPU-accelerated tasks are often CPU-bottlenecked; in those cases, a more capable GPU need not produce a higher score.
How do I make a fair comparison between two laptops?
Use the same benchmark family and version, application version, relevant test, and operating conditions for both systems. Record enough configuration detail to understand what the score represents, and repeat close results rather than treating a small difference as decisive.
- Describe your real project. Write down the application and version, source codec or Blender scene, render or compute backend, resolution, effects, and intended output. Use that description to select the nearest benchmark test. Do not choose a test simply because it produces a high score.
- Match benchmark and host-application versions. Puget’s public scores are grouped by benchmark and host-application version. Do not assume that scores from different test or scoring revisions are interchangeable. Label comparisons with both versions. In an analysis published February 19, 2026, Puget showed that changed tests and application support can shift observed hardware relationships.
- Record the whole laptop configuration. Note the exact model and configuration, CPU, RAM, GPU, VRAM, driver, performance or thermal preset, and whether the laptop was plugged into AC or running on battery. Record GPU subsystem power or an OEM power setting when disclosed. A GPU family name is not enough to identify the conditions behind a result.
- Check what the chosen subtest exercises. Codec encoding and decoding may involve media engines and the CPU as well as the GPU. GPU-effects tests and Cycles rendering measure different work. Use the benchmark’s test description to identify which result answers your question, and verify that the laptop’s installed application edition and memory can run the test.
- Run comparable conditions and repeat near-ties. Keep the performance profile and power condition consistent, and compare like with like. Puget reports typical run-to-run variance of about 2–3% for Resolve’s overall score when there is no thermal or other throttling; it recommends at least three runs when examining categories or individual tests. That figure applies to the documented Resolve benchmark conditions, not every benchmark or laptop.
- Keep the conclusion tied to the test. Say that one configuration scored higher on a named test under the stated conditions—not that its GPU is universally faster. If the scores are close, the test versions differ, or a key configuration detail is missing, report that limitation instead of forcing a winner.
Why can the same laptop GPU name produce different results?
A laptop GPU label identifies a product family, not a complete operating configuration. Power limits and laptop-level performance choices affect what the system can sustain, and the CPU, cooling and other components also influence application scores.

For example, NVIDIA lists a 60–115 W GPU subsystem-power range for the RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU. That is a manufacturer specification for possible configurations, not a benchmarked speed difference between two specific laptops. It demonstrates why a comparison based only on “RTX 5070 Ti” can omit a material condition.
Performance profiles matter too. Puget’s laptop testing documents how wall-power profiles can change CPU limits and system behavior. Do not silently pool a Quiet-mode result with a Performance-mode result or assume a battery run is directly comparable to an AC-powered run. If a review or public database does not disclose the profile and power condition, mark that as an uncertainty.
GPU memory is another practical constraint. A test must fit the configuration being evaluated; otherwise, a missing or unrepresentative result may reflect the test’s requirements rather than a simple speed difference. Puget lists 12+ GB of VRAM for the Premiere Pro v2 Extended preset on Windows. That is a requirement for that benchmark preset, not a universal minimum for editing video or completing all creative projects.
How should I interpret a score, median or small lead?
First identify whether the number is a workload-specific result, an application-wide score, a render rate, or a public median. Those values answer different questions. Next check the versions and conditions behind it, then ask whether the result is large and consistent enough to matter for your decision.
A workload-specific subscore can be more relevant than an overall score when your work is concentrated in one task. But do not assume that every subscore is GPU-only: inspect the benchmark description for CPU, media-engine, encoding, decoding and other contributions. A score is strongest as evidence when both laptops ran the same test family and release in the same application version, with comparable settings.
Public community medians need additional care. Blender Open Data displays medians and submission counts, and both can change as submissions arrive. Record the selected filters, the number of submissions and the date you observed the result if you cite a live median. Do not turn a changing pooled median into a timeless laptop ranking, or treat its device label as proof of an exact retail configuration.

A small lead is not automatically a buying advantage. For Resolve, Puget’s documented typical overall-score run-to-run variance is about 2–3% without thermal or other throttling. If two reported scores are close to that range, repeat the runs and inspect the category or individual test relevant to your workflow. Do not apply Resolve’s variance figure as a universal threshold to other software.
Can I compare a laptop result with a desktop result?
You can compare named configurations on named tests, but you cannot turn one laptop-versus-desktop result into a general conversion factor. CPU, GPU, cooling, power limits and the selected workload all shape the outcome.
Puget Systems’ 2024 comparison reported that its Core i9-14900HX/RTX 4090 Mobile workstation achieved 80% of the specified Core i9-14900K/RTX 4080 SUPER desktop’s average performance across selected creator workflows. Against Puget’s Ryzen 7900X/RTX 4080 SUPER desktop, the same mobile workstation achieved about 88% of that system’s average. The different percentages reflect different desktop comparators; neither is a general claim about all laptops, desktops or individual applications. Treat them as dated results for those configurations and selected workflows.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does a real product listing tell me beyond the GPU name?
Read the exact configuration rather than assuming every laptop sold under a model family has identical components. For example, ASUS documents a ProArt P16 H7606 configuration with an RTX 5070 Ti and 12 GB of GDDR7 memory. That listing is useful for illustrating what to look for—specific GPU and VRAM details—but it does not establish benchmark performance, prove that every H7606 configuration has those parts, or establish regional availability.

When you evaluate a listing, look for the exact CPU, GPU, VRAM and laptop SKU, then seek disclosed GPU power or OEM performance settings and the conditions under which any benchmark was run. If a specification or condition is absent, do not fill it in from the GPU family name. The manufacturer’s product specification is available here; NVIDIA’s laptop GPU specifications are published separately.

- Does the benchmark represent the application and task I actually use?
- Are the benchmark release and host-application version the same?
- Am I comparing the same test category, and do I know what components it exercises?
- Are application edition, render backend and relevant settings comparable?
- Do I know the exact laptop configuration, VRAM and, where available, GPU power setting?
- Were both systems run on the same power source and performance profile?
- Were close results repeated, and are differences larger than the documented variability for that benchmark?
- Is the result from the exact laptop configuration, or a community median with a disclosed submission count?
If several answers are unknown, the score may still offer a clue, but it is not a fair head-to-head comparison. State what is known, keep the conclusion narrow, and avoid turning a benchmark result into a general claim about a GPU model.
How was this comparison method selected?
The method follows the distinctions built into the cited application benchmarks and documentation: match the task, inspect separate test categories, record app and test versions, account for laptop power and memory, and distinguish controlled configuration comparisons from public community results. It prioritizes evidence relevant to a creator’s workload instead of treating one headline score or GPU name as a universal ranking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Can I compare scores from different versions of the same benchmark?
Only if the publisher documents that the scoring and test workloads remain comparable. When tests or scoring change, label each version and avoid treating the numbers as a direct before-and-after measure of hardware performance.
Why does Blender Open Data show different medians for a laptop GPU?
The results are community submissions, and the median can shift as new submissions arrive or as filters change. Check the selected Blender version, compute backend and submission count before using a median as context.
Does a benchmark score tell me how long my laptop battery will last?
No. A creative-work performance score measures a benchmark workload, not battery runtime. An AC-powered score also should not be assumed to describe performance on battery.
Is 12 GB of VRAM enough for every creative project?
No universal project requirement follows from one benchmark preset’s memory requirement. Puget’s 12+ GB figure applies to its Premiere Pro v2 Extended preset on Windows, not every editing workload or creator’s project.
