To read a Big Tech earnings report well, separate three questions: how much cloud revenue was recognized in the stated period, what profit and margin that growth produced, and how much cash the company committed to infrastructure that may not earn revenue for years. Then test AI claims by classification: reported-period revenue is stronger evidence than an annualized run rate, usage statistic, backlog, or spending plan. The period, currency, segment definition, accounting treatment and date of every figure matter. A 41% annual growth rate for one company cannot be ranked directly against a 37% quarterly rate for another, and a large capital-expenditure number is not proof of either waste or future returns.
What should you check before reading any growth number?
First identify the reporting period, currency and exact definition of the metric. A calendar quarter, fiscal quarter, fiscal year and trailing-twelve-month figure answer different questions. “Cloud” may mean a reportable segment, a named product family or a company-defined aggregate that includes several businesses.

Microsoft’s FY2026 annual report says Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $214.4 billion. Its Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 41% in that fiscal year. Microsoft Cloud is a composite that includes Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud, Azure and other cloud services, the commercial portion of LinkedIn and Dynamics 365. The 41% figure therefore describes one product-family measure inside a fiscal-year report, while the $214.4 billion figure covers the broader Microsoft Cloud definition.
Amazon’s July 2026 second-quarter release reports AWS net sales growth of 37% year over year in Q2 2026. That is a quarterly segment result, not a full-year growth rate and not the same scope as Microsoft Cloud. Both figures can be useful illustrations, but they should not be put in a league table without labeling the period and definition.

| Company and disclosure | Period | What the metric covers | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Cloud revenue: $214.4 billion | FY2026 | Microsoft-defined aggregate including Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud, Azure and other cloud services, commercial LinkedIn and Dynamics 365 | Use as an annual scale measure, not as Azure-only sales |
| Azure and other cloud services growth: 41% | Microsoft FY2026 | Named Azure and other cloud services revenue | Compare with the same metric and period in another Microsoft filing |
| AWS net sales growth: 37% | Amazon Q2 2026 | AWS segment sales | Compare with other quarterly AWS results; do not treat as a fiscal-year rate |
Currency also matters. Keep the reporting currency unless you have a documented reason to convert it, and do not mix nominal growth rates with constant-currency rates. If a company changes a segment presentation or reclassifies revenue, use the restated comparative period supplied in the filing.
Is cloud growth paying off?
Growth is paying off only when it is accompanied by sustainable operating profit, acceptable margins and cash generation. Revenue growth by itself shows demand, not the return earned on serving that demand.
Check operating income and margin
After recording sales growth, find the relevant segment’s operating income and operating margin. A rising margin suggests that incremental revenue is covering incremental compute, power, personnel, leases and depreciation. A falling margin can mean the company is deliberately accepting near-term cost to build capacity, or that competitive pricing and usage costs are eroding economics.
Microsoft reports that its Intelligent Cloud segment’s FY2026 revenue increased 30% and operating income increased 28%. Those rates indicate strong expansion, but operating income grew more slowly than revenue. Microsoft also says the Microsoft Cloud gross-margin percentage was lower partly because of continued AI infrastructure investment and growing AI product usage. That explanation is management’s attribution; treat it as a stated cause rather than independently proven causation. The practical question is whether usage eventually produces enough revenue and contribution margin to absorb those costs.
Use AWS’s segment figures rather than company-wide profit
Amazon’s Q2 2026 release reports AWS sales of $42.2 billion and AWS segment operating income of $16.6 billion. Compare both figures with the prior-year quarter to see whether profit is expanding with sales. Remember that segment cost-allocation policies and accounting definitions affect the comparison, so AWS margin is not automatically comparable with Microsoft’s cloud margin or with a stand-alone cloud company.

For each period, calculate operating margin as segment operating income divided by segment revenue, using the company’s reported figures. Track the direction over several periods instead of treating one quarter as a permanent trend. Also read management’s explanation for changes in gross margin, because a surge in AI usage can raise both sales and the cost of supplying inference and training capacity.
What does capital spending tell you about future capacity?
Capital expenditure is a cash investment in long-lived assets, not an expense recognized all at once. The cash can leave the business months or years before the servers, buildings and network equipment are ready to generate revenue.
Separate property purchases from total investing cash flow
- Open the cash-flow statement and identify purchases of property and equipment (often called capital expenditures or purchases of property, plant and equipment).
- Keep that amount separate from total investing cash flow, which may also include acquisitions, marketable securities and other investments.
- Read the property-and-equipment note for servers, data centers, land, buildings, network gear, construction in progress and useful lives.
- Check lease commitments and construction obligations, because a company can be committed to future capacity even before paying the full purchase price.
- Compare the cash amount with depreciation and amortization. Depreciation generally begins when an asset is ready for its intended use, not when the purchase order is signed.
Alphabet: a large current cash commitment
Alphabet reports $91.4 billion of capital expenditure in 2025, mainly for technical infrastructure such as servers, network equipment, data-center land and buildings. Alphabet says depreciation begins when property and equipment is ready for its intended use, and data-center projects can take months or years to move from purchase and construction to service. That timing creates a gap: today’s cash outflow can precede both the depreciation expense and the revenue expected from the capacity.
Meta: distinguish actual spending from a forecast
Meta Platforms’ 2025 Form 10-K reports $69.69 billion of purchases of property and equipment, mainly for servers, data centers and network infrastructure. The filing forecasts approximately $115 billion to $135 billion of 2026 capital expenditures to support AI efforts and the core business. The range is management’s outlook in that filing, not actual 2026 spending. It is also not automatically comparable with another company’s capex unless both companies define the measure in the same way.
| Disclosure | Amount | Period or status | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alphabet capital expenditure | $91.4 billion | 2025 actual | Cash invested mainly in technical infrastructure; depreciation and revenue recognition can come later |
| Meta purchases of property and equipment | $69.69 billion | 2025 actual | Mainly servers, data centers and network infrastructure |
| Meta expected capital expenditure | Approximately $115 billion–$135 billion | 2026 forecast stated in the 2025 Form 10-K | Forward-looking range, not settled spending |
To judge whether spending is productive, look for capacity utilization, customer commitments, revenue growth in the served businesses, operating-margin trends and eventual return on invested capital. A capex-to-revenue ratio can flag intensity, but it cannot by itself establish whether a project will earn a good return.

Why can profits rise while free cash flow falls?
Net income follows accrual accounting; free cash flow reflects cash actually paid for operations and investment. A company can report higher earnings while making a very large infrastructure payment that reduces free cash flow before the related assets produce revenue.
Amazon’s Q2 2026 example
Amazon says trailing-twelve-month free cash flow was an outflow of $7.6 billion as of Q2 2026. The company attributes the change primarily to a year-over-year increase of $66.1 billion in net purchases of property and equipment, which it says primarily reflected AI investment. This is a trailing-twelve-month cash measure, not a single-quarter loss and not evidence that every dollar of the spending will fail to earn a return.
Read the cash-flow statement in this order: operating cash flow, purchases of property and equipment, proceeds from asset sales, acquisitions and other investing items. Then reconcile the result to the company’s stated free-cash-flow definition, because companies can differ in which items they subtract.
Look for non-operating items inside net income
Amazon’s Q2 2026 net income included $53.4 billion of non-operating pre-tax other income, primarily from investments in Anthropic. An investment gain can lift net income without increasing AWS sales, operating income or cash collected from customers. For an operating assessment, compare net income with operating income, operating cash flow and free cash flow, and identify material gains or losses outside the core business.

How to read Amazon’s AI run-rate claim
Amazon’s July 30, 2026 release says AWS’s AI business exceeded a $25 billion annual revenue run rate and was growing at triple-digit percentages year over year. Report it as Amazon’s run-rate disclosure: an annualized pace, not $25 billion of AI revenue recognized in Q2. The same release provides AWS’s $42.2 billion quarterly sales and $16.6 billion segment operating income, but it does not isolate a comparable AI revenue total within those period results.
Andy Jassy, Amazon’s president and chief executive officer, said in the release: “AWS is booming, growing 36.7% year-over-year in Q2—our fastest growth in 18 quarters—and our AI and Chips businesses each eclipsed run rates of more than $25 billion.” The statement combines a quarterly AWS growth rate with annualized business claims, which is precisely why the units and periods must remain visible when you quote it.
What Microsoft’s disclosure does and does not establish
Microsoft discusses cloud growth, AI infrastructure investment and growing AI product usage, and links those factors to pressure on cloud gross margin percentage. The cited FY2026 report does not provide a standalone AI revenue total comparable with Amazon’s run-rate figure. Usage and infrastructure demand are relevant signals, but they do not establish the incremental revenue or return on capital attributable solely to AI.

How should you compare Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet and Meta?
Use several aligned axes instead of a single capex-versus-revenue ratio. The figures available for these companies cover different periods and definitions, so a fair comparison preserves those qualifications.
| Axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Reporting period | Is this quarterly, annual, trailing-twelve-month or forecast? | Prevents a fiscal-year growth rate from being ranked against a quarterly rate |
| Cloud scope | Is it a segment, named service or company-defined aggregate? | Determines which sales and costs are included |
| Monetization evidence | Is the figure recognized revenue, a run rate, usage, backlog or a commitment? | Shows how close the claim is to realized sales |
| Profitability | What happened to segment operating income, operating margin and gross margin? | Tests whether growth is economically productive |
| Cash burden | How much was spent on property and equipment, and how is free cash flow defined? | Shows the near-term financing burden |
| Asset timing | When will construction and equipment be ready, and when does depreciation begin? | Explains why cash, expense and revenue can move in different periods |
| Outlook risk | When was the forecast made, and could demand, supply, power or construction timing change? | Keeps plans from being mistaken for results |
Microsoft’s FY2026 disclosures, Amazon’s Q2 2026 release and the 2025 annual filings for Alphabet and Meta are not synchronized. They should be treated as dated snapshots, not as a simultaneous cross-company quarter. Update each company’s figures when newer filings are available.

How can you build a repeatable earnings-report worksheet?
A compact worksheet makes every claim traceable and prevents accidental mixing of periods.
- Record the date and period. Write the filing or release date, fiscal quarter or year, currency and whether the figure is actual, trailing or forecast.
- Copy the company’s definition. Note whether “cloud” means AWS, Azure and other cloud services, Microsoft Cloud or another management-defined group.
- Capture sales and growth together. Enter the dollar revenue, year-over-year change and comparison period in adjacent columns.
- Add operating income and margins. Calculate segment operating margin when the company provides compatible numerator and denominator figures. Keep gross margin separate from operating margin.
- Extract cash investments. Record purchases of property and equipment, total investing cash flow and the company’s free-cash-flow definition.
- Mark asset timing. Note construction in progress, lease or purchase commitments, useful lives and the point at which depreciation starts.
- Classify AI evidence. Label each statement as recognized revenue, separately disclosed revenue, run rate, usage, backlog, commitment or expectation.
- Scan for non-operating items. Flag investment gains, impairments, tax effects and other income that can move net income without changing operating performance.
- Write the uncertainty beside the number. For example, “Meta 2026 capex: management forecast from 2025 Form 10-K,” rather than presenting it as a result.
- Revisit the sheet next quarter. Compare the forecast with actual spending, capacity deployment, revenue, margins and cash flow as new reports arrive.
What mistakes most often lead to a wrong conclusion?
- Ranking unmatched growth rates: a fiscal-year Azure rate and a quarterly AWS rate are not like-for-like.
- Calling a run rate revenue: annualizing a current pace does not mean that amount was recognized in the period.
- Using total investing cash flow as capex: acquisitions and securities transactions can materially change the total.
- Treating capex as an immediate expense: cash is paid before depreciation generally starts when an asset is placed in service.
- Equating revenue growth with better economics: inspect operating income, gross margin and cash generation.
- Reading net income without the notes: investment gains and other non-operating items can dominate a quarter.
- Presenting an outlook as fact: label the date and period of every spending plan and replace it when the company updates guidance.
- Assuming one company’s AI definition fits another’s: the cited disclosures do not provide a standardized Big Tech AI revenue measure.
What would confirm that AI infrastructure is earning its keep?
Confirmation requires a sequence of later disclosures rather than one headline. Look for recognized revenue growth in the relevant product or segment, stable or improving gross and operating margins after the capacity enters service, operating cash flow that catches up with investment, and evidence that utilization is high enough to support the asset base. Also test whether the company narrows or expands its spending plan as demand, supply, power availability and construction schedules change.
Management commentary can explain why a margin moved or why spending accelerated, but it remains an assertion until subsequent results support it. Keep the original forecast beside actual capex, depreciation, revenue and cash flow so you can measure what happened rather than relying on a retrospective narrative.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between capex and operating expense in an earnings report?
Capex buys or builds assets expected to last, such as servers and data centers, and appears as an investing cash outflow. Operating expenses pay for current-period activities such as staff, electricity and cloud-service delivery; capex later affects profit through depreciation once assets are ready for use.
Can a company have negative free cash flow and still be financially healthy?
Yes, if the shortfall is a deliberate, fundable investment cycle and operating cash flow, liquidity and future utilization support it. Check debt, cash balances, committed spending and whether prior investment produced rising revenue and operating profit rather than judging the sign alone.
How do I calculate a cloud segment’s operating margin?
Divide the segment’s reported operating income by its reported segment revenue for the same period. Do not combine a company-wide operating-income figure with segment sales, and note that internal cost allocations can make margins differ across companies.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does depreciation lag a data-center investment?
Construction, equipment delivery, installation and testing must bring the asset to its intended use before depreciation generally begins. A project can therefore consume cash and remain in construction in progress while producing no depreciation expense or related customer revenue.
Where can I find AI revenue if a company does not disclose it separately?
Use the company’s recognized segment or product revenue as the closest reported measure, then distinguish it from usage, customer counts, backlog and management run-rate claims. If the filing does not isolate AI sales, do not manufacture an allocation from total cloud revenue.
