Read an AI company’s earnings report as a connected story, not a scoreboard. First establish the exact fiscal period and accounting basis. Then separate total revenue from AI-exposed segments, match each margin to its definition, compare new guidance with the previous outlook, and examine what “capex” includes. Finally, test whether spending is producing usable capacity, revenue and cash flow for that company’s particular business model. A cloud provider, chip supplier, software vendor and data-center operator can all report strong AI demand while having very different economics.
What does an AI company’s earnings report actually tell you?
An earnings release combines historical results with management’s expectations. The historical section reports what happened during a defined quarter or year; the guidance section describes what management currently expects for a future period. Keeping those categories separate prevents one of the most common mistakes: treating a forecast as if it were already earned.

AI reporting also requires extra care because “AI revenue” is not a standardized accounting line. A company may use that phrase for cloud infrastructure, software features, networking, accelerated-computing rentals or a bundle of services. The issuer’s segment definitions and methodology determine what the term means in that report.
The useful questions are therefore not simply “Did revenue rise?” or “Was capex high?” They are:

- How large is the business, and how quickly did comparable revenue grow?
- Which segment generated that growth, and under what currency and accounting basis?
- Did profitability improve after the costs of infrastructure and product development?
- What exactly is management forecasting, and how did the forecast change?
- What assets are included in capital spending, when will they be deployed, and how are they funded?
How do I establish the reporting frame before reading the numbers?
Write down the reporting period before comparing any figure. Record the fiscal quarter or year, the period-end date, the company’s fiscal year-end, and the document type. A press release, conference-call presentation and regulatory filing can contain different levels of detail.
- Identify the period. Note the quarter or fiscal year and its exact end date. Microsoft’s FY2026 fourth-quarter materials, for example, identify the quarter ended June 30, 2026.
- Classify the document. Mark whether you are reading preliminary results, an earnings release, call materials or a filed annual or quarterly report.
- Check the comparison base. A year-over-year comparison uses the same period in the prior year; a sequential comparison uses the immediately preceding quarter. They answer different questions.
- Record the currency basis. “Reported” or “USD” growth can differ from constant-currency growth when exchange rates move.
- Note any changed presentation. Acquisitions, divestitures, segment reclassifications and discontinued operations can make the prior-period number less comparable.
Fiscal calendars do not line up across companies. Preserve each issuer’s period when building a comparison; labeling two numbers “the second quarter” does not make them economically equivalent.

What does AI company revenue growth mean?
Revenue growth is meaningful only when you specify the amount, period, comparison base, currency and mix. Start with total revenue to understand scale, then examine the segments most exposed to AI demand. A rapidly growing AI-related service can still be small relative to the company’s overall business.
Separate scale from growth rate
Growth percentage describes the change; absolute revenue describes the size of the business. A 50% increase on a small segment may add fewer dollars than a 10% increase in a large segment. Record both the reported revenue and the percentage change.
Separate total company revenue from AI-exposed segments
Look for cloud infrastructure, accelerated computing, networking, data-center services, AI software or other segment names used by that issuer. Do not assume that a company’s marketing label is an accounting category. IREN’s FY2026 Form 10-K, for instance, describes its AI cloud offering as a vertically integrated platform spanning data-center, compute and software layers. That company-specific definition includes items such as land, power, cooling, GPUs and CPUs, storage, networking and managed services; it should not be applied automatically to another company.
Check the currency and period basis
Salesforce’s results presentation shows total revenue and subscription-and-support revenue separately and also reports constant-currency growth. Compare reported growth with constant-currency growth when both are supplied. A widening gap may reflect exchange rates rather than a change in customer demand.

Look for mix and comparability effects
Read the footnotes and management discussion for acquisitions, divestitures, segment reclassifications, changes in contract timing and unusually large customer commitments. A headline growth rate may combine businesses with different economics or include a period that is not fully comparable with the prior year.
| Revenue question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What is total revenue? | Shows the company’s overall scale and growth contribution. |
| Which segment is AI-exposed? | Shows where demand is occurring and whether it is material to the company. |
| Is growth year over year or sequential? | Prevents comparisons between different time bases. |
| Is growth reported or constant currency? | Separates operating performance from exchange-rate effects. |
| Did the segment definition change? | Tests whether the current and prior numbers remain comparable. |
How should I interpret gross and operating margins?
Read gross margin, operating margin and any other profitability measure separately, then determine whether each is GAAP or non-GAAP. Two percentages printed next to each other may exclude different costs and therefore cannot be blended into one verdict.

Gross margin shows the cost of delivering revenue
Gross margin is revenue less the costs classified as cost of revenue, expressed as a percentage of revenue. For infrastructure-heavy businesses, changes can reflect hardware depreciation, energy, data-center leases, cloud capacity purchased from suppliers, support costs and utilization. A falling gross margin is not automatically a demand problem; it may reflect a deliberate capacity build or a temporary utilization gap.
Operating margin shows the cost of running the company
Operating margin additionally reflects research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative costs. It can decline while gross margin rises if the company increases product development or selling expenses, or improve while gross margin falls if operating expenses are tightly controlled.

Keep GAAP and non-GAAP definitions distinct
GAAP figures follow the applicable accounting rules. Non-GAAP figures are adjusted measures defined by the issuer, often excluding selected items such as stock-based compensation, amortization of acquired intangibles, restructuring charges or other costs. The exact exclusions differ, so inspect the reconciliation and the company’s definition.
Salesforce and Cisco both present GAAP and non-GAAP operating margins in their results materials. That presentation is a reminder to label the measure every time you copy it into a spreadsheet. Do not call an adjusted figure “the real margin”; ask what it includes, what it excludes and whether the exclusions recur.
Investigate the explanation for a margin change
Management discussion may attribute changes to product mix, infrastructure investment, usage levels, depreciation, compensation or operating costs. Compare the explanation with the income statement and cash-flow statement. A margin expansion supported only by an adjustment deserves a different interpretation from expansion visible in both GAAP and adjusted results.
| Measure | What to record | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Gross margin | Percentage and accounting basis | Did delivery, infrastructure or utilization costs change? |
| Operating margin | Percentage, GAAP or non-GAAP | How did research, sales and administrative spending affect it? |
| Adjusted operating margin | Issuer’s exclusions and reconciliation | Are excluded items recurring or material? |
How do I read management guidance?
Guidance is a forward-looking estimate for a stated period, not a reported result. Record the forecast range, the period it covers, the currency basis and whether it is GAAP, adjusted or operational. Then compare it with the previous guidance and, later, with the actual result.
Capture the full range and its basis
Oracle’s FY2027 first-quarter outlook illustrates why the basis matters: it gives total-revenue growth of 27%–29% in both constant currency and USD, while its cloud-revenue outlook uses separate constant-currency and USD ranges. Those are not interchangeable figures; preserve the label beside each range.
Compare new guidance with the prior outlook
A range raised, lowered or narrowed can be more informative than the midpoint alone. Write the prior range next to the new one and identify the change. If the company does not provide the earlier range in the release, retrieve it from the preceding quarter’s materials rather than guessing.

Track guidance to the eventual result
When the period ends, compare actual revenue, margin or cash flow with the range that management issued. Distinguish a result inside the range from one above or below it, and note whether currency or acquisitions affected the comparison.
Read assumptions and caveats
Guidance may depend on customer demand, supply availability, foreign-exchange rates, data-center deployment, backlog conversion or expected utilization. Treat it as management’s estimate under stated assumptions, not a guaranteed outcome.

How much are AI companies spending on capex?
There is no single industry capex number that applies to every AI company. The useful figure is the issuer’s spending for a defined period, together with what it purchased, when it will be deployed and how it was financed.
Use Microsoft’s FY2026 fourth quarter disclosure as a reading example
Microsoft’s FY2026 fourth-quarter call materials report $41 billion of capital expenditures. Roughly two thirds was for short-lived assets, primarily CPUs and GPUs; the remainder was for long-lived assets. The same materials separately report $5.6 billion in total finance leases, primarily for large data-center sites, and $35.8 billion in cash paid for property and equipment.
| Microsoft FY2026 Q4 figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| $41 billion | Reported capital expenditures for the quarter |
| Roughly two thirds of capex | Short-lived assets, primarily CPUs and GPUs |
| $5.6 billion | Total finance leases, primarily for large data-center sites |
| $35.8 billion | Cash paid for property and equipment |
These are related disclosures, not interchangeable totals. Capital expenditures, finance leases and cash paid for property and equipment can be presented under different accounting treatments and timing. Do not add them together unless the company explicitly defines them as additive.
Ask what the spending is meant to enable
Identify the hardware, buildings, power systems, networking, cooling and other assets being added. Then look for deployment timing, power or construction constraints, expected capacity, utilization and the revenue streams that should use the assets. A large purchase made near period-end may not contribute much revenue in that same quarter.

Review operating cash flow, debt issuance, finance-lease obligations, customer prepayments and other funding sources. Also consider useful life and replacement cycles. Short-lived accelerators may require a faster refresh than buildings or power infrastructure, changing the company’s future cash requirements.
Do not treat higher capex as automatically good or bad
High spending can support capacity that customers urgently need, but it can also create underutilized assets, depreciation and financing obligations. The test is whether deployed capacity is being used, whether associated revenue and margins are developing, and whether the balance sheet can carry the investment.

How does an AI company’s business model change the reading?
Model developers, application vendors, cloud providers, semiconductor suppliers and data-center operators monetize different layers of the AI stack. Their revenue recognition, gross margins, capital intensity and asset ownership will not look alike.
Software and application companies
These businesses may emphasize subscriptions, usage-based fees, renewal rates and research spending. They can rent infrastructure rather than own it, so their capex may look modest while cloud-computing costs appear in cost of revenue or operating expenses.
Cloud and infrastructure providers
These companies may own or finance data centers, accelerators, networking equipment and power systems. Capex, depreciation, utilization and lease commitments are central to interpreting margins and cash flow.
Semiconductor suppliers
A chip supplier’s AI exposure may appear through product revenue and customer demand, while manufacturing capacity can be owned by another company. Inventory, research spending and supply commitments may matter more than the supplier’s own data-center capex.
Vertically integrated AI-cloud operators
IREN’s FY2026 annual filing describes an offering that combines land, power, substations, buildings, cooling, compute hardware, storage, networking and managed software or services. For a company with that structure, capacity development and financing commitments must be read alongside revenue growth; the model is not a template for every AI business.
How should I compare two AI companies’ earnings reports?
Compare like with like. A clean comparison uses the same fiscal basis and preserves each company’s definitions rather than forcing unlike metrics into one ranking.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Comparison axis | What to match |
|---|---|
| Fiscal period | Quarter or year, period-end date and fiscal year-end |
| Revenue | Total company versus the relevant AI-exposed segment |
| Growth basis | Year over year or sequential; reported or constant currency |
| Margin | Gross or operating; GAAP or non-GAAP with definitions |
| Guidance | Covered period, range, currency and accounting basis |
| Capex | Capital spending, lease-financed assets and cash PP&E treatment |
| Infrastructure model | Owned, leased, outsourced or vertically integrated capacity |
| Funding capacity | Operating cash flow, debt, leases and customer prepayments |
After aligning those axes, ask which company converts demand into cash most effectively. A higher growth rate may come with lower margins and greater infrastructure commitments; a lower growth rate may come with stronger cash generation. The comparison is useful only when the underlying definitions are visible.
What are the most common mistakes, and how can I avoid them?
Mistake: treating “AI revenue” as a standard metric
Fix: quote the issuer’s segment name and definition. If the company provides a methodology, record it beside the number.
Best Value
Mistake: comparing a reported-currency figure with a constant-currency figure
Fix: use the same currency basis for both companies or show both bases separately.
Mistake: mixing GAAP and adjusted margins
Fix: label every margin and read the reconciliation before drawing a trend.

What is a repeatable worksheet for every earnings release?
Use the following sequence in a spreadsheet or notes document. It keeps historical facts, management estimates and interpretation separate.
- Header: company, document type, fiscal period, period-end date and fiscal year-end.
- Revenue: total revenue, relevant segment revenue, year-over-year change, sequential change, currency basis and mix comments.
- Profitability: gross margin, GAAP operating margin, non-GAAP operating margin, definitions and management’s explanation.
- Guidance: new range, prior range, covered period, currency, GAAP or adjusted basis, assumptions and eventual result when available.
- Capex: reported capex, asset mix, cash paid for property and equipment, finance leases, deployment timing and expected utilization.
- Funding: operating cash flow, debt, lease obligations, customer prepayments and other financing sources.
- Business model: what the company sells, which infrastructure it owns or rents, and where the AI-related definition comes from.
- Decision: write one sentence each on demand, profitability, execution and financial capacity, citing the exact period for every number.
This process produces a more reliable conclusion than reacting to a single growth rate or capex headline. It also makes later quarter-to-quarter updates easier because the definitions and comparison bases are already documented.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I read the earnings release or the regulatory filing first?
Start with the release for the period’s headline figures and guidance, then use the filed report for segment definitions, accounting policies, lease commitments and cash-flow detail. The filing is especially important when a presentation uses an adjusted metric without showing its full reconciliation.
Why can revenue rise while an AI company’s profit falls?
Rapid expansion can bring higher data-center depreciation, cloud usage, employee compensation, research spending or financing costs before new capacity reaches normal utilization. Check gross margin, operating expenses and the timing of deployment instead of inferring a demand problem from profit alone.
What does constant-currency growth remove?
It estimates growth as though exchange rates had stayed at a comparison-period level, reducing the effect of currency movements. It does not remove acquisitions, pricing changes, volume changes or differences in segment mix.

How can I tell whether capex is becoming productive?
Look for the interval between spending and deployment, then track utilization, revenue tied to the new capacity, gross-margin effects and operating cash flow. Lease commitments and refresh cycles can reveal future obligations that are not obvious from the headline capex number.
