To winterize an outdoor faucet, first disconnect and drain its hose and any attachments. Then check whether the faucet has a dedicated indoor shutoff: if it does, close that valve, open the outdoor faucet to drain the line, and leave the outdoor faucet open. Protect exposed faucets with a molded-foam cover and insulate vulnerable pipes. A frost-free faucet still needs its hose removed; the name does not guarantee it cannot freeze.
The right steps depend on the faucet design, the location of its supply pipe, and whether you can isolate the outdoor branch indoors. Work through each outdoor faucet separately rather than assuming every spigot has the same plumbing. A cover or heat cable can add protection in the right circumstances, but neither replaces removing the hose and draining the line as appropriate.

Use the faucet’s configuration to decide how to isolate and drain its water line. The basic first step is the same for every outdoor faucet: remove the hose and attachments. A cover or a frost-free design is not a substitute for that step.
- Disconnect the hose and attachments. Remove garden hoses, timers, splitters, quick-connect fittings, and anything else attached to the faucet.
- Drain and store the hose. Do not leave water trapped in a connected hose or accessory.
- Find out how the faucet is supplied. Look for a dedicated indoor shutoff valve and identify whether the outdoor faucet is conventional or frost-free/frost-resistant.
- Shut off and drain the outdoor branch if it has a dedicated valve. Close that valve, open the outdoor faucet, and let the remaining water drain. Leave the outdoor faucet open after draining.
- Cover the exposed faucet and inspect nearby plumbing. Add a molded-foam cover to an exposed faucet and protect pipes in unheated or drafty areas.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency advises, “Disconnect hoses from faucets. Cover the faucets.” The American Red Cross likewise recommends removing, draining, and storing outdoor hoses. Those steps address different parts of the risk: disconnecting allows the faucet to drain, while a cover adds protection from cold air.

It helps to do the work in order. Remove attachments before using the shutoff or installing the cover; otherwise, a hose or fitting may continue to hold water at the faucet. After isolating and draining a branch, leave its outdoor valve open. Then assess nearby pipe runs, since protecting the faucet alone does not address plumbing in an unheated garage, crawl space, attic, or exterior wall.
Why does the hose have to come off first?
A connected hose can hold water at the faucet and interfere with drainage, including at a frost-free faucet. Remove hoses and attachments before shutting off or covering the faucet so trapped water does not undermine the winterization steps.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Drain the hose before storing it, too. A hose left outdoors with water in it can freeze; storing it does not replace draining the faucet line itself. Timers, splitters, and quick-connect fittings should also be removed because they remain attached to the faucet and can affect its ability to drain.
This is why a frost-free label does not make hose removal optional. Frost-free sillcocks are designed to drain when the hose is removed. A hose or accessory can retain water at the faucet and interfere with that drainage. Disconnecting it is a simple first step regardless of whether the faucet is conventional or frost-resistant.
How do I know which outdoor-faucet procedure to use?
Look for a dedicated indoor shutoff that serves the outdoor faucet, then determine whether the faucet is conventional or frost-free. The water line may run through a basement, crawl space, utility room, or mechanical area, often near where it exits the house.
Do not assume the nearest valve controls the outdoor faucet. The useful question is whether there is a dedicated shutoff serving that branch. A home may have different arrangements at different faucets, so repeat the check for each one. If a valve’s purpose is unclear, avoid relying on guesswork; the correct procedure depends on the plumbing layout and the faucet design.
If the faucet has a dedicated indoor shutoff
Use the indoor valve to isolate the outdoor branch, then open the outdoor faucet to release water left in the line. Keep the outdoor faucet open after it drains so any residual water has room to expand instead of remaining trapped in a closed section.
Closing the indoor valve is only the isolation step. It does not by itself empty the pipe between that valve and the outside faucet. Opening the outdoor faucet provides the path for remaining water to drain. Once drained, leave it open for the winter rather than closing it again and trapping residual water in the line.

If you have a frost-free or frost-resistant sillcock
A frost-free sillcock places its shutoff farther inside the structure and is designed to drain when the hose is removed. Disconnect the hose before freezing weather so the faucet can drain as intended. Frost-free describes the design, not a guarantee: installation, slope, insulation, exposure, and local conditions can still affect freeze risk.
A frost-free faucet can still be vulnerable if its drainage is impeded or the surrounding pipe is exposed to cold. Remove any attached timer, splitter, or quick-connect fitting along with the hose. A molded-foam cover can provide an additional layer for an exposed faucet, but it cannot correct a poor installation or protect every vulnerable section of the supply pipe.

Do not assume that every outdoor faucet has the same valve arrangement. Check the areas where the supply line may run, and use the faucet manufacturer’s instructions when available. If you cannot determine how to isolate or protect the line, a licensed plumber can identify the configuration; routine hose removal itself does not require a professional.
If there is no dedicated shutoff, the exact protection needed depends on the plumbing layout. Do not close an unrelated valve or assume that covering the spigot drains the branch. A plumber can help identify the supply and explain the appropriate protection when the arrangement is unclear.
Should I leave the outdoor faucet open after shutting off the indoor valve?
Yes. Once the dedicated indoor shutoff is closed, open the outdoor faucet and allow the line to drain; leave the outdoor valve open afterward. Closing only the indoor valve can leave water trapped between the shutoff and the outdoor faucet, where it has no path to escape as it expands during freezing.
This open position is for the outdoor faucet after the branch has been shut off and drained. It is not a reason to leave a hose attached, and it does not replace insulating exposed plumbing or covering a faucet exposed to freezing air.
Keep the sequence clear: indoor branch valve closed, outdoor faucet open to drain, and outdoor faucet left open after draining. The open faucet is not itself the shutoff; the indoor valve isolates the branch. If you are unsure whether a valve serves that faucet, identify the setup before relying on this procedure.
Do I need to cover a frost-free spigot?
A cover can add protection to a frost-free faucet that is exposed to freezing air, but it does not make the faucet fail-proof or compensate for a connected hose. Remove the hose first, and follow the faucet’s intended drainage procedure.

For an exposed faucet, Portland Water specifically recommends a molded-foam hose-bib cover. The Red Cross also recommends pipe sleeves for exposed plumbing. Treat a cover as an extra layer that can reduce risk, not as a guarantee against freezing.
A cover is most relevant where the faucet is exposed to cold air. It does not replace insulating vulnerable pipes farther inside the building, and a covered faucet can still be at risk if its line is exposed, poorly insulated, or unable to drain. Use the cover after removing the hose and handling the shutoff and drainage steps that apply to your faucet.
Which pipes need extra protection around the house?
Inspect plumbing in places that are unheated, exposed to outdoor temperatures, or vulnerable to drafts. A protected outdoor faucet will not prevent a different section of pipe from freezing elsewhere in the home.
- Check garages, crawl spaces, basements, and attics for exposed or poorly protected pipes.
- Look along exterior walls and around places where pipes pass through walls or floors.
- Insulate appropriate exposed lines with pipe insulation, such as a foam sleeve.
- Seal cold-air leaks around plumbing penetrations.
- Keep garage doors closed when water lines run through the garage.
Pay particular attention to pipes that are exposed to cold air rather than assuming that all plumbing inside the house has the same protection. The right amount of protection depends on the pipe’s location, insulation, and exposure.
When inspecting, follow the supply line as far as you can safely access it, especially where it crosses an unheated or drafty space. The outdoor faucet and the indoor run feeding it are parts of the same concern: a foam cover protects the exposed fixture, while pipe insulation and sealing address vulnerable sections along the route. These measures reduce risk but cannot guarantee protection under every condition.
Can heat tape protect an outside water pipe?
UL-listed heat tape or heat cable, including thermostatically controlled products where appropriate, can be considered for especially vulnerable exposed pipes. It is a specialized measure, not a replacement for disconnecting hoses, shutting off an outdoor branch when a dedicated valve exists, and draining the line.

Follow the specific product’s installation instructions. The suitability of heat cable depends on the product and the pipe installation; do not assume that a generic cable or an improvised heating method is safe for every pipe.
Think of heat cable as an additional measure for a particularly vulnerable pipe run, not a universal winterization solution. It does not make it safe to leave a hose attached, and it is not a method for thawing a frozen pipe. If the pipe layout or product instructions leave you uncertain, get qualified help rather than improvising.

What should I do during a severe cold snap?
Cold-snap measures help protect vulnerable plumbing inside the home; they do not replace routine outdoor-faucet winterization. Keep the home heated, and consider additional steps where plumbing is exposed to cold.
- Keep the thermostat at a steady setting rather than sharply lowering it overnight.
- If you will be away in cold weather, the Red Cross advises keeping the heat on at no lower than 55°F.
- Open cabinet doors beneath sinks where it is safe to let warmer household air reach vulnerable pipes.
- Consider a small cold-water drip from a faucet served by exposed plumbing as a temporary risk-reduction measure.
A drip is not a substitute for removing outdoor hoses and draining or isolating an outdoor faucet line. The FEMA household guidance also advises keeping the furnace running at 55°F or higher to help keep the home above freezing.
Recommended Free Tools
Use these steps when the weather creates added risk for vulnerable indoor plumbing, not as a replacement for the outdoor-faucet checklist. A small drip applies to a faucet served by exposed plumbing; it does not protect every pipe in the home or guarantee that a pipe will not freeze. Keep the heating system operating, and give warmer indoor air access to vulnerable pipes where opening a cabinet is safe.
What should I do if an outdoor pipe freezes?
A trickle or complete loss of water at one faucet can indicate a frozen pipe. Keep the affected faucet open while warming the suspected section, and use gentle, indirect heat rather than a flame or improvised high heat.
Thaw only with a safe, gentle heat source
Apply a hair dryer, electric heating pad, or towels soaked in hot water to the suspected section while monitoring the area. Do not use a torch, open flame, kerosene heater, propane heater, or charcoal stove to thaw a pipe.
If you cannot locate the frozen section, cannot reach it safely, or cannot thaw it, call a licensed plumber. Avoid continuing with a heating method that could damage the pipe or create a fire hazard.
Keep the faucet open during the thawing process so water can flow as the ice melts. Use only gentle, indirect heat on a section you can safely access, and monitor it as you work. If the location is hidden or inaccessible, the pipe will not thaw, or you cannot do the work safely, stop and call a licensed plumber rather than trying stronger heat.
If the pipe bursts or starts leaking
Shut off the home’s main water valve immediately, then seek professional help. Know where the main shutoff is before freezing weather, so you can reach it quickly if a pipe leaks. Do not use electrical appliances in standing water.

A suspected leak changes the task from prevention to damage control. Use the main shutoff promptly if a pipe bursts or leaks, and do not operate electrical appliances where water is standing. Professional help is appropriate for a burst pipe, water damage, or a frozen section that cannot be safely reached or thawed.

- Leaving a hose attached: It can hold water at the faucet and interfere with drainage, even on a frost-free model.
- Closing the indoor valve but not draining the line: Remaining water still needs a way out; open the outdoor faucet and leave it open after draining.
- Relying only on a cover: A cover adds protection but does not replace hose removal or the correct shutoff-and-drain procedure.
- Treating “frost-free” as a promise: Conditions such as installation, slope, insulation, and exposure still matter.
- Using antifreeze in water lines: FEMA advises not to put antifreeze in these lines unless directed.
- Using an open flame to thaw a pipe: Use gentle indirect heat instead; a frozen or inaccessible pipe may need a plumber.
- Using electrical equipment in standing water: Do not use electrical appliances where water is standing.
Another common mistake is treating one protective measure as if it covers every risk. A cover addresses an exposed faucet; insulation and sealed penetrations address other vulnerable plumbing; a cold-water drip is a temporary cold-snap measure; heat cable is specialized. None removes the need to take off the hose and follow the correct drainage procedure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow should I adjust the workflow for my home?
The procedure depends on the faucet type, whether a dedicated indoor shutoff is available, and how exposed the nearby pipe run is. Freeze severity and duration also matter: a prolonged cold snap may call for extra protection beyond the routine faucet steps.
| What you find | What to do | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional faucet with a dedicated indoor shutoff | Remove attachments, close the indoor valve, open the outdoor faucet to drain, and leave it open. | A cover for an exposed faucet or protection for other vulnerable pipes. |
| Frost-free or frost-resistant sillcock | Remove the hose and attachments so the faucet can drain as intended; cover it if exposed. | Protection against every freeze or an improperly exposed pipe run. |
| Exposed plumbing in an unheated or drafty area | Inspect it and insulate appropriate pipes; seal cold-air leaks around penetrations. | Disconnecting and draining the outdoor faucet line. |
| Especially vulnerable exposed pipe | Consider an appropriate UL-listed heat cable and follow its installation instructions. | Basic winterization or safe emergency thawing practices. |
| Frozen, inaccessible, or leaking pipe | Use gentle indirect heat only if the section can be safely located; call a licensed plumber if it cannot be safely thawed. If it bursts or leaks, shut off the main valve. | Routine prevention steps once damage has occurred. |
Use the table as a decision aid, not a one-size-fits-all plumbing specification. A conventional faucet with a dedicated shutoff calls for isolating and draining its branch. A frost-free sillcock is designed to drain once the hose is off, but still needs attention to exposure and installation. Where plumbing is in an unheated space, protect that pipe run as well as the faucet. When the configuration is unclear or damage is already present, the safest next step may be professional help.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I shut off the whole house’s water to winterize one outdoor faucet?
The routine steps described here use a dedicated indoor valve to isolate the outdoor faucet’s branch, where one is available. The main valve is the urgent shutoff if a pipe bursts or leaks, not a substitute for draining an outdoor line.
What if my outdoor faucet has no indoor shutoff valve?
First confirm that a valve serving that faucet is not in a basement, crawl space, utility room, or mechanical area near the line’s exit point. If you cannot identify the setup, the safe procedure depends on the plumbing layout; a licensed plumber can locate the supply and explain how to protect it.
Can a faucet cover stop a pipe from freezing in any weather?
No cover or frost-free design guarantees protection under every installation and weather condition. Pipe slope, insulation, exposure, and local conditions affect the risk, so a cover should be treated as supplementary protection.
Do I need to remove a hose from a frost-free outdoor faucet?
Yes. Remove the hose, timer, splitter, and other attachments before freezing weather. A frost-free sillcock is designed to drain when the hose is removed, and an attached hose can retain water or interfere with drainage.
Can I use heat tape to thaw a frozen outdoor pipe?
Heat cable is a specialized protective measure for especially vulnerable exposed pipes, not a substitute for winterizing or a recommended thawing method here. For a safely accessible frozen section, use gentle indirect heat such as a hair dryer, heating pad, or hot towels; call a licensed plumber if you cannot locate or safely thaw it.
What should I do if a frozen pipe starts leaking?
Shut off the home’s main water valve immediately and seek professional help. Do not use electrical appliances in standing water, and know the main shutoff location before a freeze emergency.

The Bottom Line
Before freezing weather, remove and drain every outdoor hose and attachment. If a dedicated indoor shutoff serves the faucet, close it, open the outdoor faucet to drain the branch, and leave the faucet open. Add a molded-foam cover to exposed faucets and insulate vulnerable pipes; frost-free designs and covers reduce risk but are not guarantees. In a freeze emergency, use only gentle indirect heat, never an open flame, and shut off the main water if a pipe bursts or leaks.
