Preventing secret leaks between AI coding agents requires defense in depth: isolate each agent outside the model, give it only a task-specific workspace, deny network access by default, and keep real credentials outside the runtime. For high-risk work, use a disposable virtual machine or microVM with a separate kernel. For lower-risk jobs, a tightly configured container can work if its filesystem, capabilities, mounts, and egress are explicitly restricted. A trusted broker or proxy should inject short-lived, least-privilege credentials only for approved destinations. Delete the sandbox after each run, inspect anything written to shared resources, and revoke or rotate credentials whenever exposure is suspected.
What can leak from one AI agent sandbox to another?
An agent can read and transmit anything its runtime exposes. The risk is not limited to files named .env: environment variables, shell history, home-directory credentials, SSH keys, cloud-CLI configuration, mounted repositories, logs, tool output, and cached artifacts may all contain secrets. OpenAI warns that once a stored secret is injected into an environment, agent-generated code can read it (OpenAI Sandbox security).

- Filesystem exposure: a home-directory mount, production checkout, shared volume, or another agent’s workspace can reveal keys and source code.
- Instruction injection: issues, pull requests, web pages, dependency files, MCP descriptions, and logs can contain instructions that trick an agent into searching for and exfiltrating accessible data. OWASP advises treating these inputs as untrusted (OWASP AI Agent and MCP Security).
- Shared services: package caches, artifact stores, message boards, inference services, clipboards, host mounts, and permitted endpoints can act as cross-agent channels even when the agents have separate processes.
- Host-side effects: Git hooks, CI workflows, IDE tasks,
Makefiletargets, package scripts, generated logs, and modified working-tree files can execute later on a trusted host.
Assume that a manipulated agent will attempt to read and send every secret it can reach. Your design goal is to make those secrets unreachable and to make outbound paths observable and allowlisted.
Why are permission prompts not enough?
A prompt asking an agent to approve file access is a review aid, not a containment boundary. An injected instruction can persuade the model to approve a dangerous action, and code generated by the agent can run after an approval. OWASP therefore requires the platform—not the model—to enforce limits on filesystem access, network egress, process capabilities, and system calls (OWASP APTS isolation and containment controls).

Put the enforcement in the operating system, container runtime, hypervisor, or a host-side policy proxy. The agent should be unable to disable or rewrite those controls from inside its workspace.
Should you use a container, microVM, or virtual machine?
Choose the strongest boundary justified by the data and the consequences of compromise. Containers share the host kernel; virtualization supplies a separate kernel and a stronger barrier. The UK National Cyber Security Centre describes a progression from no compute isolation, through correctly configured containers, to virtualization and dedicated hardware (NCSC guidance on agentic-AI cyber risk).

| Isolation model | Boundary characteristics | Use when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tightly configured container | Separate namespaces and policy-controlled capabilities, but a shared Linux kernel | The task is lower risk and the runtime can enforce read, write, process, and egress restrictions | A kernel or runtime escape could affect the host; configuration errors are significant |
| Disposable VM or microVM | Separate kernel, isolated processes, private writable layer, and policy-controlled network | Agents handle untrusted repositories, external content, production-adjacent code, or multiple tenants | More startup and resource overhead than a container |
| Dedicated hardware | Physical separation from other workloads | The consequence of a boundary failure justifies the greatest isolation | Highest operational cost and least flexibility |
Docker’s sandbox documentation describes separate-kernel isolation, host and peer process isolation, and a policy-controlled network for its VM-based mode (Docker isolation layers). Whatever platform you choose, evaluate the actual policy surface rather than assuming that the product label guarantees confidentiality.
How should you define the sandbox policy?
Write a policy before launching an agent. It should be explicit enough that an operator can audit every allowed path and connection:

- Filesystem: list paths the agent may read and write; deny everything else.
- Network: list destinations, ports, and protocols; begin with no egress.
- Execution: restrict process creation, privileged operations, devices, and system calls.
- Credentials: identify which broker identity, if any, the task may use; do not expose a general secret store.
- Telemetry: log blocked path access, denied system calls, attempted secret-store reads, and rejected destinations.
OWASP APTS states: “The platform MUST declare and enforce an execution sandbox that bounds the agent runtime’s filesystem access, network egress, process capabilities, and system-call surface.” Treat that as a minimum policy statement, not an optional hardening item.
How do you prevent shared workspaces from becoming secret channels?
Give each run a private workspace containing only the project data required for its task. Do not mount a user home directory, production checkout, cloud-configuration directory, deployment-key directory, or another agent’s workspace.
Recommended Free Tools
Mount only task data
Use a read-only source mount when the agent only needs to inspect code, or a private clone inside the sandbox when it must edit files. Explicitly deny reads of .env*, ~/.ssh, cloud-CLI credential directories, deployment keys, unrelated checkouts, and host logs. A deny rule should cover hidden files and nested paths, not just one filename.
Understand clone and read-only modes
Docker documents a clone mode that keeps the host repository read-only while the agent edits a private in-VM clone. That protects host integrity, but it does not hide files that were mounted into the clone: a repository’s .env remains readable. If confidentiality matters, use a mountless workspace or move secrets out of the repository (Docker isolation layers).

Review implicit execution files
Before copying a workspace back to a trusted machine, inspect Git hooks, CI workflows, IDE task files, Makefile targets, package scripts, and agent-configuration files. A live host working tree can be changed immediately; Docker recommends treating sandbox-modified files like a pull request from an untrusted contributor (Docker security model).
How should credentials reach an agent?
Keep long-lived, production, and administrator credentials outside the sandbox. Give each agent a distinct service identity with only the permissions required for its task, and use a token that expires as soon as practical. Do not put secrets in prompts, source code, container images, notebooks, screenshots, committed configuration, fixtures, logs, shell history, or ordinary environment variables readable by agent code.

Prefer brokered access
The safer pattern is a host-side broker or proxy. Sandbox code requests an operation; the trusted service checks the agent identity, destination, method, and requested scope; the proxy adds the real credential only for an allowlisted destination; and the response is returned without exposing the credential value. OpenAI describes this approach for third-party access, and Docker documents a proxy that injects authentication headers while keeping credentials out of the VM (OpenAI Sandbox security; Docker security model).
Why a secret manager alone is insufficient
A secret manager controls storage and retrieval, but it is not an isolation boundary. If a retrieved value is materialized as a normal file or environment variable inside the sandbox, generated code can usually read and transmit it. Keep retrieval and use in the trusted broker whenever possible.

How do you stop network exfiltration between agents?
Start every sandbox with outbound networking disabled. Add only the model endpoint, package registries, source-control host, and APIs required for that task. Route permitted traffic through a policy-enforcing proxy and log both successful and blocked requests.
- Block direct sandbox-to-sandbox traffic.
- Allow only approved ports and protocols; disable unnecessary UDP and ICMP.
- Block cloud metadata endpoints and arbitrary DNS or HTTP destinations.
- Prevent direct access to shared artifact stores, message boards, inference services, and MCP servers unless each is explicitly reviewed as a data channel.
- Re-review destinations and tool definitions whenever a service or integration changes.
OWASP identifies egress restriction as the primary control after a successful prompt injection, while Docker describes outbound TCP passing through a host proxy with destination rules and UDP disabled by default (OWASP AI Agent and MCP Security; Docker isolation layers). An allowlisted service is not automatically safe: it can still receive sensitive data if the agent is permitted to send it.
What lifecycle controls reduce the damage from a compromised run?
Make the runtime disposable and limit how much it can do before it is destroyed. Use a read-only root filesystem and an ephemeral writable layer where practical. Apply CPU, memory, disk, process-count, API-volume, and wall-clock limits so a malicious or runaway task cannot consume the host or generate unlimited requests.
Monitor forbidden-path access, unexpected system calls, new network destinations, secret-store reads, and edits to agent instruction files. At completion, delete the sandbox, writable layers, caches, logs containing sensitive output, and temporary credentials. Credential revocation is part of cleanup, not an emergency-only action.
Best Value
What is a practical rollout procedure?
- Classify the task. Mark whether it can encounter untrusted code or data, touch production-adjacent systems, or run alongside other tenants. Select a container only when a shared-kernel boundary is acceptable; otherwise use a disposable VM or microVM.
- Create a fresh identity. Issue a task-specific service identity with least privilege and a short expiration. Keep the underlying secret in the trusted broker, not in the agent’s environment.
- Build a minimal workspace. Copy or clone only the required project files. Exclude home directories, credentials, unrelated repositories, and secret-bearing configuration.
- Set deny-by-default policy. Enforce filesystem, process, capability, system-call, and network restrictions outside the model. Add individual exceptions for the task.
- Configure brokered calls. Permit the sandbox to call the broker, but require destination and scope checks before the broker injects authentication.
- Run with observation enabled. Record blocked paths, denied connections, system-call violations, and broker decisions. Alerts should identify the agent, workspace, destination, and time.
- Review outputs as untrusted. Inspect the diff, generated scripts, hooks, CI files, IDE tasks, logs, clipboard contents, and any files copied to a host or shared service.
- Destroy and revoke. Delete the runtime and transient state, then revoke the task identity. Rotate broader credentials if any boundary violation or unexplained access occurred.
How should you audit cross-agent channels?
Draw a data-flow map that includes more than files. For each pair of agents, identify shared mounts, package caches, artifact repositories, message queues, inference endpoints, MCP tools, clipboard integration, host proxies, DNS resolvers, and logging pipelines. Decide whether each channel is required, what data may cross it, and which policy enforces that decision.
Test the negative cases: an agent should fail to read another workspace, enumerate SSH keys, reach metadata endpoints, connect directly to a peer, or send data to an unapproved domain. Review logs for blocked attempts rather than relying only on successful-task tests. Repeat the review after changing images, tools, mounts, network rules, or broker logic.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat should you do if a secret may already have leaked?
- Revoke or rotate immediately. Disable the exposed token, key, session, or service identity before investigating in detail.
- Stop affected sandboxes. Preserve only the evidence required by your incident process; do not keep running a potentially compromised environment.
- Inspect access logs. Check broker requests, proxy destinations, filesystem alerts, source-control activity, cloud audit logs, and artifact downloads for the affected identity.
- Invalidate derived access. Rotate dependent credentials, cached tokens, signed URLs, and deploy keys that could have been obtained from the original secret.
- Rebuild from clean inputs. Recreate the workspace and review hooks, workflows, scripts, and generated files before another run.
- Close the channel. Remove the mount, endpoint, tool, or broker permission that made the exposure possible, then add a regression test for the blocked action.
Which common designs fail?
- “The model will obey the system prompt.” Prompt injection is specifically a case where instructions cannot be trusted; enforcement must be external.
- “The container is isolated, so mounting the home directory is fine.” A mount is an intentional data channel. The agent can read everything included in it.
- “Read-only means secret-safe.” Read-only protects against writes, not disclosure. A read-only repository mount can still reveal
.envfiles. - “The secret manager solves it.” Materializing a secret into an agent-readable file or variable recreates the exposure.
- “Allowlisting the internet is enough.” Broad DNS, HTTP, package, artifact, or message services can carry exfiltrated data. Allowlist exact destinations and inspect payload-sensitive operations at the broker.
- “Cleanup is optional after a successful run.” Caches, logs, writable layers, and temporary tokens can persist and become available to the next agent.
What controls should be mandatory for every deployment?
- OS-, container-, or hypervisor-enforced isolation outside the model.
- Separate filesystem, identity, and network path for each agent.
- No host home-directory, production, credential, or unrelated-agent mounts.
- Denied network egress by default, with exact exceptions and logging.
- Brokered, short-lived, least-privilege credentials rather than secrets in the runtime.
- Resource limits, blocked-action telemetry, ephemeral state, and post-run destruction.
- Human review of host-side changes before hooks, workflows, scripts, or generated commands execute.
- Immediate credential rotation and incident review after suspected exposure.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two agents share the same source repository safely?
They can share an immutable, secret-free source snapshot, but a live writable checkout creates a data and execution channel. Give each agent its own private clone or mountless workspace, then review the resulting diff before merging it into a trusted checkout.
Should model API keys be placed in the agent container?
Avoid exposing reusable provider keys to generated code when a host-side gateway can authenticate requests. The gateway can bind requests to an agent identity, enforce rate and destination policy, and keep the reusable credential outside the sandbox.
How often should sandbox policies be revalidated?
Revalidate whenever the base image, agent tools, MCP definitions, mounts, proxy rules, or allowed services change. Also run periodic negative tests that confirm agents still cannot read peer workspaces or reach blocked destinations.
Do encrypted files inside a sandbox protect secrets?
Encryption helps only while the decryption key remains outside the agent’s reach. If the runtime receives both the ciphertext and usable key, generated code can generally decrypt the data.
