Multiple AI coding assistants stop contradicting one another when they work from one maintained project baseline, receive bounded assignments, and pass through one review path. Give every session the relevant repository context, use the instruction file that its harness actually recognizes, assign separate ownership for parallel work, and have a human or designated integrator reconcile proposals before merging them. Parallel agents are valuable for independent investigations and isolated changes; they become risky when they edit the same design or files without an agreed owner.
The workflow below combines current guidance from Microsoft Visual Studio Code, GitHub, and Cursor with practical safeguards for teams using more than one assistant. It explains how to set shared rules, divide work, detect conflicts early, and improve the rules when an agent repeatedly makes the same mistake.

Each assistant predicts from the context it can see: its own conversation, the files you supplied, repository instructions, tool integrations, and sometimes different model or harness behavior. Two sessions can therefore make incompatible assumptions about architecture, naming, test commands, or what “done” means even when they inspect the same repository.
Conflicts are usually process failures rather than evidence that one model is universally right. A session with stale history may propose a design that another session has already rejected. An agent that did not receive a module boundary may move code across layers. Two agents allowed to edit the same file can each produce locally reasonable changes that cannot be merged cleanly.

Microsoft’s current VS Code guidance recommends project customizations, but it also warns that each harness has its own expected filename and location. The guide lists .github/copilot-instructions.md for Copilot, CLAUDE.md for Claude, and AGENTS.md for Codex; do not assume that one tool reads every file or resolves conflicting instructions in the same order. Check the current documentation for every harness you use: Microsoft’s configuration guide.
How do I create one shared source of project guidance?
Write a short, project-specific baseline, then expose equivalent content through the instruction mechanism each assistant supports. The baseline should answer questions an agent cannot reliably infer from source code and should be revised when observed failures reveal a missing rule.

- Architecture and the responsibility of each major module or service.
- Important directories, generated files, public interfaces, and boundaries that must not be crossed.
- Supported runtime versions, package-manager commands, build and test commands, and required checks.
- Naming, formatting, error-handling, logging, dependency, and API conventions.
- Security, privacy, licensing, and data-handling requirements.
- The definition of done: expected tests, documentation, migration notes, and review evidence.
Keep the guidance concise enough to remain usable. Remove duplicated rules and delete stale exceptions instead of adding another paragraph that contradicts them. Generic advice that the tool can infer from the repository adds noise and increases the chance of divergent interpretations.
Map the baseline to each harness
Maintain one canonical set of decisions, then create the harness-specific files or settings required by your tools. Keep wording and examples aligned, but do not pretend the files have identical scope or precedence. A change to the canonical baseline is not complete until each active harness has the corresponding update.
| Harness or integration | Example instruction location named by current guidance | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Copilot in VS Code | .github/copilot-instructions.md |
Whether the file applies to the workspace and which other repository or path rules take precedence. |
| Claude-based coding sessions | CLAUDE.md |
The supported location, scope, and inheritance behavior in the current harness documentation. |
| Codex-based coding sessions | AGENTS.md |
Which directory levels are loaded and how nearer instructions interact with broader ones. |
The names above are examples from the VS Code guide, not a universal standard. Confirm current behavior before relying on a file, especially after an editor, extension, or hosted service update.
Prove that a customization actually applies
- Choose a representative, observable task that previously exposed the problem, such as placing a new endpoint in the wrong layer.
- Ask one assistant to perform or explain the task with the new guidance in place.
- Check the response and resulting diff for the specific rule you intended to enforce.
- Repeat with each harness, because a file can exist in the repository without being read by a particular tool.
- Compare the results and narrow the rule if it creates new ambiguity.
Microsoft recommends starting from an observed problem and a representative task, then checking that a customization applies and comparing the result. See the configuration guidance and Cursor’s discussion of coding-agent behavior at Cursor documentation.

How should I define ownership before running agents in parallel?
Give each session one bounded responsibility, an explicit file or subsystem boundary, and an observable completion condition. If two tasks depend on a shared design decision or could edit the same files, sequence them or appoint one owner to integrate the work.

Write an assignment that another person could verify
A useful assignment states the current state, relevant files or symbols, constraints, and expected output. For example: “Inspect the authentication middleware in src/auth; do not edit files; list failure cases and propose tests for token expiry.” An implementation assignment can add: “Change only src/auth/expiry.ts and its tests; preserve the public interface; run the project’s authentication test command; report the result.”
Say whether the session may edit files. Parallel analysis is easier to reconcile when every agent returns a proposal without making unannounced changes. If agents are allowed to edit, state the exact ownership boundary and the integration point.
Use a dependency order for cross-cutting work
Explore and plan first when a change spans modules, data models, APIs, or deployment. Select one design, then assign implementation slices that do not overlap. A migration owner can define the schema and compatibility contract before another session updates callers. This prevents several agents from inventing incompatible contracts at the same time.
VS Code’s best-practices guidance recommends starting with an observable small task and reserving parallel sessions for unrelated or independent work. For broad changes, it recommends exploring, planning, implementing, and reviewing in sequence: VS Code best practices.
Label competing proposals explicitly
Sometimes you want several agents to suggest approaches. Mark those sessions as analysis-only, require each to state assumptions and trade-offs, and name the person who will select one proposal. Do not let all proposals silently edit the same implementation. GitHub describes parallel agents as useful for surfacing alternative approaches, edge cases, and trade-offs before code hardens: GitHub’s Agent HQ guidance.
What context should every AI coding session receive?
Provide the smallest complete context: the current repository state, the relevant files or symbols, the intended behavior, constraints, and validation command. Avoid copying an entire unrelated conversation into a new task; irrelevant history can pollute the context and revive decisions that no longer apply.
Use a repeatable context brief
- State: branch or commit being used and any known uncommitted work that must remain untouched.
- Scope: files, directories, APIs, or symbols the session owns.
- Behavior: what should change, what must stay compatible, and concrete input/output examples when useful.
- Constraints: performance, security, dependency, backward-compatibility, or style requirements.
- Checks: the project’s relevant tests, linter, type checker, build, or manual verification.
- Deliverable: a patch, a written proposal, a test plan, or a diagnosis, with no ambiguity about whether editing is allowed.
Reference important files and symbols instead of relying on a broad request such as “modernize the backend.” Include the current state when another session has already made an approved decision. If the task changes after discussion, start a fresh session or rewrite the brief so obsolete assumptions are not carried forward. VS Code specifically notes that unrelated conversation history can pollute context; its recommendations are documented at the best-practices page.

How can I run several assistants without creating merge conflicts?
First make unrelated local work easy to distinguish, then parallelize only work with independent ownership. Keep one integration point where changes are reviewed against the same plan.
Prepare a clean baseline
- Inspect the working tree with
git status --short. - Commit, stash, or otherwise isolate unrelated local changes so an agent cannot accidentally include them.
- Record the baseline commit or equivalent revision in every task brief.
- Confirm that each session knows which files are off-limits.
The exact isolation method depends on your team’s Git workflow. The essential requirement is that reviewers can tell which lines belong to which assignment.
Choose genuinely independent slices
Good parallel candidates include separate investigations of different subsystems, documentation and test planning that do not edit the same files, or isolated components with stable interfaces. Poor candidates include two agents redesigning the same API, changing a shared configuration file, or refactoring a common utility while callers are being updated elsewhere.
When overlap is unavoidable, make one session the owner of the shared files and have other sessions return proposals or tests. Alternatively, sequence the work: approve the contract first, then implement dependent pieces.
Keep outputs comparable
Ask every implementation session to report changed files, assumptions, checks run, failures, and unresolved questions. Ask analysis sessions to use the same decision criteria. Comparable reports make it possible for an integrator to select between proposals without rereading every conversation.
How do I integrate and review suggestions from different agents?
Treat every result as a proposal, not an automatically correct patch. Review it against the shared instructions and plan, inspect the diff, and run the project’s relevant validation before accepting it.
- Read the diff first. Check for edits outside the assigned boundary, accidental formatting churn, generated-file changes, and behavior changes the brief did not authorize.
- Compare with the project baseline. Verify architecture, module ownership, naming, security rules, and definition of done.
- Compare with other approved work. Look for incompatible interfaces, duplicate migrations, conflicting error semantics, and tests that encode different expectations.
- Run the relevant checks. Use the repository’s documented tests, linter, type checker, build, and security checks; record failures rather than asking another agent to conceal them.
- Resolve design choices explicitly. A human or designated integrator chooses between competing approaches and records the decision before dependent work continues.
- Use a checkpoint. Merge or apply only the reviewed change, then give the next session the resulting state and decision.
GitHub documents repository-wide and path-specific guidance for Copilot code review, which is useful when review rules differ by subsystem: GitHub Copilot code-review documentation. The review mechanism does not replace human ownership; it gives reviewers a consistent place to apply the project’s rules.

What the integrator should decide when two patches both pass
Passing tests show that a patch meets the checks you ran, not that it is the best architectural choice. Prefer the proposal that matches the documented boundaries, minimizes unintended surface area, preserves compatibility, and leaves a clearer path for future maintenance. If the project guidance does not answer the choice, record the decision and add the missing constraint before assigning more work.
How do I resolve a direct disagreement between assistants?
Do not ask a third agent to “pick the winner” without supplying decision criteria. Turn the disagreement into a small design review with evidence.
Classify the conflict
- Instruction conflict: two files or rules prescribe different behavior. Identify the harness-specific scope and update the canonical baseline.
- Context conflict: sessions saw different revisions or assumptions. Rebase the discussion on one current state and resend a concise brief.
- Design conflict: both proposals follow the rules but choose different trade-offs. Compare compatibility, security, complexity, and operational impact.
- Implementation conflict: patches overlap. Keep one owner, discard or adapt the other patch, and rerun checks on the integrated result.
Use evidence rather than model confidence
Ask each proposal to identify the files it relied on, assumptions it made, affected interfaces, tests that demonstrate the behavior, and risks it could not verify. A confident explanation is not a substitute for a diff, a reproducible check, or an explicit project decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I improve instructions after an agent fails?
Update instructions only in response to a concrete, repeated misunderstanding. Broad rules such as “always write clean code” rarely prevent a specific failure and can create new ambiguity.
- Save a representative failing task and the incorrect assumption that caused it.
- Determine whether the cause was missing context, a stale rule, an instruction file the harness did not read, or an inherently ambiguous design.
- Add the narrow project fact or convention that would have prevented the error.
- Remove contradictory or duplicate wording elsewhere.
- Verify the rule with the same representative task in each active harness.
- Compare the new result with the old one and keep the change only if it improves compliance without creating side effects.
Microsoft recommends this observed-problem approach and checking that a customization actually applies. Cursor’s documentation likewise describes coding agents as operating within a particular product context, so a rule that works in one environment may need a different placement or wording in another: Microsoft’s guide and Cursor’s coding-agent documentation.

Should I use one assistant at a time or several in parallel?
Choose based on task independence, file overlap, integration cost, and how much a single evolving context matters.
| Workflow | Best fit | Main advantage | Main risk | Control to add |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One assistant at a time | Tightly coupled, sequential, or high-impact changes | One context and one owner simplify design continuity and integration. | A single mistaken assumption can persist without an outside challenge. | Use checkpoints, explicit plans, and review before dependent work. |
| Several sessions in parallel | Independent investigations, isolated components, or alternative proposals | Faster exploration and more opportunities to surface edge cases. | Overlapping edits and incompatible assumptions increase reconciliation cost. | Define ownership, forbid unauthorized edits, and appoint one integrator. |
| Hybrid | Most medium and large changes | Parallel exploration informs one selected plan, then one owner integrates it. | Requires a deliberate handoff between exploration and implementation. | Freeze the decision, publish the resulting context, and validate the combined change. |
For a cross-cutting change, the hybrid pattern is usually practical: ask separate sessions to inspect risks or propose designs, select one plan, assign non-overlapping implementation tasks, and have one owner integrate and verify the result. Availability, plan limits, and hosted integrations can change, so check current access before making parallel-agent support a dependency.
Best Value
What does a reliable multi-tool workflow look like from start to finish?
Use this sequence when a change is important enough to involve more than one assistant.
- Baseline: isolate unrelated local work and record the current revision.
- Guide: update the canonical project rules and map them to every harness-specific instruction file.
- Explore: ask separate sessions for bounded investigations, with editing disabled unless needed.
- Decide: have a human or named integrator choose one design and document unresolved trade-offs.
- Partition: assign each implementation slice an owner, files, constraints, and done condition.
- Implement: run sessions independently only where interfaces are stable and ownership does not overlap.
- Report: require changed files, assumptions, checks, failures, and follow-up questions from every session.
- Review: inspect each diff against the plan, instructions, security requirements, and neighboring changes.
- Validate: run the project’s relevant checks on the integrated result, not only on isolated patches.
- Learn: convert repeated misunderstandings into narrow, tested guidance and remove stale rules.
What should I check when suggestions still conflict?
Use the symptom to choose the next corrective action instead of repeatedly prompting the same session.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Agents place code in different layers | Architecture or module ownership is implicit. | Add the boundary and a representative example to the project guide; verify the harness reads it. |
| One tool follows a rule and another ignores it | The instruction filename, scope, or precedence differs. | Check that tool’s current documentation and maintain its supported file or setting in parallel with the canonical baseline. |
| New sessions repeat an old decision | Stale conversation history or missing current-state context. | Start a fresh session and include the approved decision, revision, relevant files, and constraints. |
| Patches modify the same files | Parallel tasks were not independent or ownership was unclear. | Stop further edits, appoint one owner, compare the diffs, and sequence dependent work. |
| Tests pass but integration is wrong | Checks did not cover architectural or cross-agent compatibility. | Review interfaces and behavior against the shared plan, add a focused test or rule, and rerun validation on the combined change. |
| Instructions keep growing and contradicting one another | Generic advice and stale exceptions accumulated. | Remove duplication, keep only observed project-specific constraints, and retest a representative task. |
What is the central rule for avoiding contradictory AI coding advice?
Use parallel assistants as bounded contributors to one engineering process, not as independent authorities. A maintained project baseline, current context, explicit ownership, and one accountable review path make disagreements visible while they are still inexpensive to resolve. When the same mistake recurs, improve the narrow rule that was missing and verify it in every harness you rely on.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all AI coding tools read AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, or copilot-instructions.md?
No. Instruction filenames, scope, and precedence are harness-specific and can change with product updates. Check each tool’s current documentation and test the rule with a small representative task before depending on it.
How can I compare two AI-generated implementations fairly?
Give both sessions the same current revision, requirements, constraints, and validation criteria, then compare their diffs, assumptions, compatibility impact, and unresolved risks. Select one proposal through an explicit design decision rather than judging by confidence or response length.
When should parallel AI sessions be avoided?
Avoid them when tasks share files, depend on an undecided interface, or involve a high-impact cross-cutting change that needs one evolving context. Explore alternatives in parallel if useful, but sequence implementation behind a selected plan and named owner.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I know whether a project instruction is helping?
Keep a representative task that previously failed, run it after the instruction change in each harness, and compare the outputs and diffs. Retain rules that measurably prevent the observed error; remove wording that is generic, duplicated, or creates new ambiguity.
