The reliable way to stop an AI agent exposing sensitive files is to enforce controls outside the model. Give the agent a separate identity, read-only access to only the paths and tools required for its task, a disposable sandbox, and an allowlist for network destinations. Keep secrets out of prompts and logs, isolate memory and retrieval, inspect data at every boundary, and require human approval for high-impact actions. A model instruction such as “do not reveal secrets” is useful guidance but is not an authorization control.
This guide shows how to design those controls, how to block common paths such as .env and SSH keys, how to contain prompt-injection attacks, and how to test revocation and exfiltration defenses without relying on a vendor’s marketing claims.

Exposure occurs whenever an agent can read, retain, transform or transmit data outside the purpose you authorized. The destination might be an attacker, a third-party API, another user’s session, a log file or a vector index rather than a public website. A file does not need to be uploaded intentionally: printing a token in a response, storing it in memory, including it in a crash report or sending it in a tool call are all disclosures.
Typical high-risk material includes passwords, API keys, signing certificates, private keys, connection strings, customer records, regulated data, unreleased source code, production configuration and backups. Treat repository files, issue text, web pages, tool descriptions and tool output as untrusted input because any of them can contain instructions designed to redirect the agent.

Why is “do not expose secrets” not enough?
A model follows patterns in context; it does not own an operating-system permission boundary. If the process can open a file or connect to a host, a malicious instruction, a tool bug or an ordinary mistake can make that access visible to the model. Authorization must therefore be enforced by the operating system, a policy service, an API gateway or the source system itself.
Microsoft’s guidance describes prompts as equivalent to sending data to an external service in many deployments. That is why a secret placed in an instruction, notebook, screenshot or chat transcript should be considered available to the agent process and potentially transferable if an injection succeeds.

How do I define a safe task boundary before granting access?
Write a short authorization record for every workflow. It should be specific enough that an independent policy engine can evaluate each attempted action.
- Purpose: state the single outcome, such as “run unit tests and propose a patch,” not “maintain the repository.”
- Resources: list exact directories, files, records or API objects. Start with a project source directory rather than the entire workspace.
- Operations: separate read, create, modify, delete, execute and transmit permissions. Begin read-only.
- Tools: enumerate the commands, APIs and interpreters that are necessary. Do not grant a general shell when a test runner is sufficient.
- Destinations: specify permitted network domains, ports and methods. If no external connection is needed, allow none.
- Time and identity: set an expiry, identify the owner and approver, and issue a dedicated agent identity.
- Change trigger: require a new review whenever the tool set, data scope, model workflow or deployment environment changes.
OWASP calls this principle “least agency”: give an agent only the autonomy, tools and access its task requires, and only for as long as it needs them. A written boundary also makes later audit and revocation practical.
What filesystem permissions should an AI coding agent have?
Use deny-by-default rules outside the model. A policy layer should resolve the path after normalization, reject traversal attempts, and check the operation before the tool runs. Keep read-only and write-capable identities separate so that a process that can inspect code cannot automatically alter authoritative files.
| Resource or operation | Safer default | Reason and handling |
|---|---|---|
| Project source directory | Read-only allowlist | Permit only the repository and subpaths needed for the task. |
| Build or test output | Write to a disposable directory | Keep generated files away from source, credentials and shared storage. |
.env, .env.* and secret configuration |
Explicit deny | Block exact names and pattern variants before any file-read tool executes. |
| SSH keys, cloud credential files and certificate private keys | Explicit deny | Do not mount the parent home or credential directories. |
| Home directories and shell history | Not mounted | These often contain tokens, browser data and personal documents unrelated to the task. |
| Production configuration and databases | Separate identity; normally no access | Use a sanitized fixture or a narrowly scoped service API instead. |
| Delete, rename or overwrite | Disabled or approval-gated | Require a human checkpoint and preserve recoverable versions. |
Path filters must cover aliases and indirections, not only visible names. Resolve symbolic links, archive extraction paths, mounted volumes and case variants before authorization. Validate command arguments deterministically; do not ask the model whether its own path is safe.

Make the files unreachable, not merely hidden in the prompt. Run the agent under a dedicated operating-system account or container profile whose filesystem view contains the project files but not the developer’s home directory, credential stores or production mounts. Add explicit deny rules for .env*, SSH directories, cloud-provider credential paths, signing keys, certificate private-key files and backup copies.

Apply the same policy to tools that can reveal file contents indirectly. Block recursive search across the host, archive creation that includes denied paths, environment-variable dumps, process-environment inspection and commands that read standard input from protected files. Test both direct and indirect paths: a denied file should remain inaccessible through a symlink, a copied workspace, a compressed archive or a generated stack trace.
If a build genuinely requires a credential, inject a short-lived, task-scoped token through an approved secret service at execution time. Expose only the minimum permission and audience, keep it out of the model-visible transcript, and revoke it when the task ends.
How do I sandbox an AI agent safely?
Prefer a disposable container, virtual machine or hosted development sandbox that can be destroyed after the run. Isolation limits damage if the agent follows a malicious instruction in a source file or tool response.
- Create a fresh environment from a pinned image or snapshot; do not reuse a developer workstation.
- Mount only the authorized project paths, preferably read-only. Use a separate temporary volume for generated output.
- Run as a non-privileged user with no host-device access and no container-management socket.
- Disable access to the host filesystem, home directories, SSH agents, browser profiles and production networks.
- Set CPU, memory, process-count and runtime limits so a runaway tool cannot consume shared capacity.
- Destroy the environment and temporary data after completion, retaining only reviewed artifacts and required audit records.
A sandbox is a containment layer, not a substitute for source-system authorization. If the service account can read a production database, placing the agent in a container does not make that data safe; remove the privilege or mediate access through a narrowly scoped API.
How can I prevent an agent from uploading secrets?
Control outbound connections at the network boundary. Allowlist the exact domains, ports and protocols required for the task and block everything else. In particular, deny arbitrary curl, upload, email, webhook, issue-comment, package-publish and repository-push operations unless they are explicitly part of the approved workflow.
DOE GEAR describes blocking unexpected outbound connections as one of the most effective defenses against exfiltration. Combine egress filtering with an HTTP or API gateway that authenticates the destination, logs the request, limits payload size and applies content inspection. A domain allowlist should not silently permit arbitrary subdomains or redirects; resolve and validate the final destination.
Inspect data before it leaves the process. Detect credential formats, private-key headers, connection strings, customer identifiers and other classified patterns. Block or quarantine a request when a policy match occurs, or require a named reviewer to approve the exact destination and payload. Remember that encoding, compression, screenshots and archive files can bypass simple text matching, so inspect decoded content where feasible.

Where should credentials live when an agent needs them?
Keep passwords, keys, tokens, certificates and connection strings out of prompts, system instructions, notebooks, screenshots, committed configuration, test fixtures, shell history and ordinary logs. Use an institution-approved secret manager that can issue short-lived, task-scoped credentials to the agent identity.
- Give each workflow its own identity and audience-limited token.
- Grant the smallest operation and data scope, with an automatic expiry.
- Prefer one-time or frequently rotated credentials over long-lived keys.
- Keep secret values outside model-visible context; let a trusted tool perform the operation without returning the value.
- Test revocation, rotation and emergency disablement before production use.
Assume anything visible to the agent process can be read and sent if an injection succeeds. Masking a value in the user interface does not protect it if the raw value remains in a prompt, tool result, environment variable or debug trace.
How should context, memory and retrieval be isolated?
Pass only the file fragments and records needed for the current decision. Keep system prompts, credentials, sensitive tool results and internal state outside model-visible context whenever possible. Large context windows increase the amount of material an accidental instruction can expose; they do not provide a security boundary.
Use short-lived session memory and separate stores by user, tenant and task. Apply authorization before retrieval, not after a document has entered a shared index. A user or agent must not be able to read another person’s summaries, vector entries, scratchpads, cached grounding data or conversation exports without an explicit grant.
Set retention limits and encrypt memory, caches and indexes. Delete temporary embeddings and scratch files when the task ends, and document which records must be retained for audit. If a tool returns sensitive data, keep the result in a protected service and provide the model only a constrained answer or redacted fields.
Where should data-loss prevention checks run?
Scanning only the final answer leaves several leakage paths open. Apply classification and DLP at each boundary where data can enter, persist or leave the workflow.
| Boundary | Useful control | Typical response |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt and uploaded files | Classify and redact before model submission | Remove credentials; require approval for regulated records. |
| Retrieved context | Authorize per document and field | Exclude cross-user or out-of-scope material. |
| Tool arguments and results | Validate parameters and scan returned content | Block unsafe paths, commands or secret-bearing results. |
| Generated output | Inspect for sensitive markers and unusual volume | Redact, quarantine or send to a reviewer. |
| Memory writes and vector ingestion | Classify before persistence | Reject secrets and apply tenant-specific retention. |
| Logs and traces | Structured redaction and access control | Store identifiers and hashes instead of raw values. |
| Outbound network requests | Egress policy plus payload inspection | Allow only approved destinations and content. |
Tokenization can replace a sensitive value with a reversible reference held by a protected service. Redaction is safer when the original value is not needed later. Monitor for repeated extraction attempts, cross-user context access, suspicious memory reads and outputs containing sensitive markers.

How does prompt injection lead to file disclosure?
Prompt injection is an instruction hidden in data the agent was asked to process. A repository README might tell the agent to print environment variables; a web page might request that it upload a local file; a tool description might contain a malicious parameter example. The agent may treat these directions as relevant even though they are not authorized by the task owner.
Use a layered response:
- Label repository text, web content, tickets, logs and tool output as untrusted data in the system design.
- Keep untrusted content separate from policy instructions and never let it redefine permissions.
- Enforce filesystem and network policy in the runtime, so following the injection still fails.
- Require approval for external communication, credential use, permission changes, deletion and other high-impact actions.
- Alert on attempts to enumerate files, read denied paths, alter instructions or access another user’s context.
Prompt hardening can reduce accidental compliance, but it cannot compensate for a process that has unrestricted file and network access.
When should a human approve an agent action?
Require a review checkpoint before the agent writes shared or authoritative data, deletes or overwrites files, installs software, changes permissions or credentials, sends data externally, or performs safety- or financially consequential actions. Present the reviewer with the exact operation, resource, destination, data classification and reason; a vague “allow agent” button is not meaningful oversight.
Approval does not replace source-system authorization. The reviewer may confirm that a patch should be merged, but the repository still needs its own access control and branch protections. Design approvals to expire, record the approver and policy decision, and prevent the agent from changing the approval mechanism.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should an audit log record?
Record enough to reconstruct who did what without storing the sensitive payload itself. At minimum capture the agent identity, owner, effective permissions, action, resource, user on whose behalf it acted, timestamp, policy decision, approval reference and correlation ID. Include tool name, destination and result status, plus hashes or redacted summaries where content comparison is needed.

Protect logs from the agent, restrict their readers and apply the same retention and DLP rules as other sensitive stores. Alert on repeated denials, unusual file enumeration, new destinations, large outbound payloads, cross-tenant retrieval and attempts to disable monitoring.
How do I test whether these controls actually work?
Test the deployed workflow, not just its written policy. Use synthetic secrets and harmless canary files, then run adversarial scenarios under the same identity and sandbox used in production.
Best Value
- Attempt direct reads of denied files, including pattern variants, symlinks, archives and case changes.
- Try to enumerate the host, home directory, process environment, mounted volumes and credential agents.
- Place injection instructions in a README, issue, web response and tool output; verify that policy blocks the requested access.
- Attempt outbound connections to an unapproved domain and approved domains with a synthetic secret in the payload.
- Check that prompts, tool traces, memory, vector indexes and logs contain no raw canary values.
- Revoke the identity and rotate its credentials during a run; confirm that subsequent actions fail.
- Delete the sandbox and verify that temporary volumes, caches and scratchpads are gone while required audit records remain.
No authoritative guidance supplies a universal percentage for control effectiveness. Measure local outcomes instead: permission-review completion, blocked exfiltration simulations, false-positive and alert quality, time to revoke access, and results of recovery drills.
How should teams compare agent platforms or security products?
Product syntax and sandbox coverage vary, so compare enforceable capabilities rather than feature names. Ask for demonstrations using your own threat scenarios and verify the behavior in current documentation.

What is a practical rollout sequence?
Teams can reduce risk without waiting for a perfect platform by introducing controls in a deliberate order.
- Inventory: classify files, data stores, tools, destinations and credentials the workflow could reach.
- Constrain: create a dedicated identity, deny-by-default filesystem policy and read-only starting role.
- Isolate: move execution into a disposable sandbox with no home-directory or production mounts.
- Control egress: block all outbound traffic, then add only the destinations required for the task.
- Remove secrets: replace embedded credentials with short-lived secret-manager grants and test revocation.
- Protect state: separate memory and retrieval by user and task; set retention and encryption rules.
- Inspect: add DLP at input, retrieval, tool, output, persistence, logging and network boundaries.
- Approve and observe: gate high-impact actions, centralize audit records and rehearse incident response.
- Re-review: repeat the assessment whenever the model, tools, data or deployment changes.
What are the most common implementation mistakes?
- Relying on a system prompt: replace verbal rules with operating-system and gateway enforcement.
- Mounting the whole workstation: provide a minimal project view and no personal or production credentials.
- Allowing unrestricted egress: use an explicit destination allowlist and inspect payloads.
- Returning secrets from tools: let a trusted service perform the operation without exposing the value to the model.
- Sharing memory across users: authorize retrieval per tenant, user and task before data enters context.
- Logging everything for debugging: redact or tokenize sensitive values and restrict log access.
- Treating approval as authorization: preserve source-system checks even after a human clicks approve.
- Failing to practice revocation: test disabling identities, rotating tokens and removing stale permissions while the workflow is active.
The central design choice is to assume the agent may eventually follow a malicious instruction. If the runtime cannot read the file, cannot reach the destination and cannot retrieve another user’s context, that failure becomes contained rather than a data breach.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent safely process a repository that contains secrets?
Only after the secrets are removed or made inaccessible to the agent identity. Use sanitized fixtures, deny-mounted paths and synthetic canary values; do not assume that placing a secret in an ignored file keeps it out of the process.
Should I give an agent network access to install packages?
Grant access only to a controlled package mirror or explicitly approved registry, with pinned versions and a separate build identity. A general internet connection also permits data exfiltration and retrieval of untrusted instructions.
Recommended Free Tools
How long should agent memory and logs be retained?
Retain only what is needed for security, legal or operational requirements, and set different periods for audit metadata and model-visible content. Short-lived task memory and automatic deletion reduce the chance that a later session can retrieve an old secret.
What should I do if a secret may already have been exposed?
Immediately revoke or rotate the credential, disable the agent identity if necessary, preserve relevant redacted audit records and investigate destinations, logs, memory and caches. Then remove residual copies and rerun synthetic exfiltration tests before restoring access.
