To preserve the most quality, keep the original file and avoid re-encoding it unless you need to change the codec, dimensions, timing, or content. If you only need a different container and the destination supports the existing streams, remux with stream copy instead. When conversion is necessary, choose settings for the output’s job: use an uncompressed or lossless file for a preservation or editing master when practical, and make a separate lossy copy when smaller size or compatibility matters.
There is no single best setting for every file. Quality, size, playback support, and future editing needs pull in different directions, and each kind of media has properties worth preserving.

What does “preserve quality” mean when converting media?
It means retaining the source’s useful information and characteristics as far as the task allows—not simply choosing the largest output file or the highest available quality setting. The right result depends on whether you are making an archive, preparing a file for editing, or sharing a smaller copy.
Keep two roles distinct:
- Preservation or editing master: A high-fidelity file kept for future use. It may be uncompressed or losslessly compressed, and it should retain important source properties.
- Delivery copy: A file made for a particular recipient, device, service, or size limit. A lossy format may be appropriate if it improves compatibility or reduces file size, provided you accept that some source information is discarded.
Lossless compression reduces file size without changing the decoded information. Lossy encoding removes or reduces information to make a file smaller; the resulting change may be more or less noticeable depending on the source, codec, encoder, and settings. A format’s name alone does not tell you whether a particular export will preserve the characteristics you care about.

Should I convert the file at all?
No—not if the original already works for your purpose. Keep it as your source, and make a converted copy only when you need a specific change or a destination requires a different format.
FFmpeg describes transcoding as decoding a stream and then encoding it again. Re-encoding can degrade quality, and repeating a lossy conversion can discard information again. If the task is only to change the container, stream copy can avoid decoding and re-encoding the audio and video, when the target container supports those encoded streams. FFmpeg notes that it transcodes streams by default unless copy is specified.

A container is the file wrapper that holds encoded media streams and related data; it is not the same thing as the codec that encodes those streams. Changing a container without changing its streams is often called remuxing. Changing a codec, applying an effect, resizing, changing frame rate, or altering sample rate requires processing or transcoding rather than a simple container change.
Stream copy cannot make an unsupported codec compatible, change the actual picture or sound, or apply edits. It also does not turn a lossy source into a lossless one: copying preserves the existing encoded stream, including its limitations.
How do I plan a conversion without sacrificing the source?
Decide what the output must do before changing anything. That prevents unnecessary rescaling, compression, or format changes that make the file less useful later.

- Keep an untouched source. Make a working copy and retain the original file and its metadata. The Library of Congress’s still-image and moving-image guidance favors preserving source characteristics; it does not prescribe a particular consumer backup routine, so choose a storage method appropriate to your own needs.
- Write down the required change. Is the problem the container, codec support, file size, image dimensions, frame rate, sample rate, or an edit? If only the container needs to change, check whether the destination supports the current encoded streams before transcoding.
- Choose the output’s role. For future editing or preservation, prefer the original or a lossless/uncompressed route where practical. For sharing, make a delivery copy in a format the recipient or service accepts, and use lossy compression only if its size or compatibility benefit is worth the information loss.
- Keep meaningful source properties. Avoid changing photo resolution or color interpretation without a reason. For audio, do not reduce bandwidth or sample precision casually. For video, preserve intended resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate, bit depth, and dynamic range where the workflow allows it.
- Inspect the converted copy. Check that it opens in the intended destination and compare its appearance or sound with the source. Look for changes relevant to that medium rather than assuming a successful export is a faithful one.
Retaining an original and making a separate delivery copy also gives you a clean starting point if you need another version. Do not use an already-compressed delivery copy as the input for a new export when you can start from the original or a lossless master.
How do I convert photos without losing important detail?
Preserve the original image, avoid unnecessary resizing, and retain the color interpretation and bit depth needed for the intended use. The Library of Congress’s recommended characteristics for digital photographs favor the same format as the master where possible, the highest available resolution without rescaling or interpolation, the highest available bit depth (16 bits per channel if available), and a profile or color space matching the published version.
Which image properties should I check?
- Resolution: Keep the source dimensions when you do not need a different size. Rescaling or interpolation changes the image data; increasing pixel dimensions does not recover detail that was not present in the source.
- Bit depth: Higher bit depth can retain more tonal information for editing. The Library of Congress names 16 bits per channel when available as a preferred characteristic; that is preservation guidance, not a requirement for every web or sharing file.
- Color profile or color space: Preserve an embedded profile or specify the color space used for the published version. If the profile is lost or interpreted differently, colors can render differently even if the pixel dimensions are unchanged.
- Compression: Uncompressed is preferred in the Library of Congress guidance; lossless compression or lower compression ratios are also listed as acceptable. A lossy export can reduce size, but its effect depends on the format and settings.
The Library of Congress lists TIFF, JPEG 2000, PNG, and JPEG/JFIF among formats for still images. That list is not a claim that the formats are interchangeable or equally suited to every workflow. Keep the format that best fits the master or destination, and verify that the export preserves the properties you need.
How can I check the photo result?
Compare the output’s dimensions and color rendering with the source, and inspect areas with fine detail, smooth gradients, and saturated colors. If an image looks softer, has new artifacts, or shifts color, check whether the conversion resized it, changed the compression, or dropped or altered the profile. Do not overwrite the source while troubleshooting.
How do I convert audio while keeping it usable?
Keep a lossless or uncompressed master when practical, and make a lossy delivery version only when its smaller size or compatibility is useful. A lossless codec decodes to the original samples; a lossy encoder removes or reduces information. Re-encoding an already-lossy file through another lossy codec can degrade it further, so retain the original encoded file for archival purposes.

What audio properties matter?
- Codec and compression: Lossless compression preserves decoded samples; lossy formats trade information for reduced size. Codec and encoder implementations differ, so a setting that works well in one tool is not automatically equivalent in another.
- Bitrate and frequency bandwidth: These affect file size and can affect sound quality. Higher bitrate can help within a given codec and configuration, but bitrate by itself is not a universal quality score.
- Sample precision and sampling rate: Reducing either can discard information or constrain later work. Avoid doing so without a delivery reason, especially if the file is intended for further editing.
- Channels and stereo coding: Confirm that the number and arrangement of channels suit the source and destination. A conversion can alter how stereo information is represented.
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) recommends uncompressed lossless recording such as WAV-PCM in its federal records context. Its FAQ gives 24 bits per sample as preferred and 16 bits as a minimum; it gives 44.1 kHz as a minimum sampling rate and encourages 96 kHz. These are NARA recommendations for records, not universal requirements for consumer audio or every conversion.
NARA lists AIFF, WAV, AU, BWF, FLAC, and MPEG-4 ALS among formats it accepts for files containing audio. It also cautions that most MP3 varieties are lossy and says files already encoded should not be rendered through another codec for archival retention. Acceptance in that records context does not mean every listed format suits every device or delivery service.
How can I check an audio conversion?
Listen to the output, especially in quiet passages, sustained tones, high-frequency material, and stereo sections. Watch for new distortion, watery or metallic artifacts, clipped peaks, missing channels, or changes in loudness. These are practical checks prompted by the properties that affect audio quality; they are not a guarantee that every difference will be audible on every playback system.
How do I convert video without changing its look or motion?
Keep the final production version at its original production resolution and frame rate when preservation is the goal, and avoid changing picture characteristics unless the destination requires it. The Library of Congress moving-image statement favors that approach and lists preservation-oriented options including FFV1 v3 in Matroska and ProRes in QuickTime. Those are examples from preservation guidance, not universal consumer export presets.

Which video properties should I preserve?
- Picture size and aspect ratio: Retain the intended frame dimensions and proportions unless a defined delivery requirement calls for resizing or reframing.
- Frame rate and timing: Keep the original production frame rate when possible. Changing it can affect motion or produce judder; preserve timing rather than assuming a different frame rate is harmless.
- Bit depth and dynamic range: These affect how much tonal and brightness information can be represented. A conversion that changes them can produce banding or shifts in highlights and shadows.
- Compression and bitrate: Compression can create visible artifacts such as blocking. Within a given size and compression codec, a higher bitrate is a rule of thumb for greater clarity, but it usually increases file size.
- Audio streams: Check the sound as well as the picture. A video export can alter its audio codec or channels even if the image looks unchanged.
The Library of Congress’s moving-image quality guidance identifies picture size, frame rate, bit depth, dynamic range, visible compression artifacts, and bitrate as factors influencing clarity. The page was last updated June 18, 2024. Bitrate comparisons across different codecs are not direct quality rankings because codecs differ in compression efficiency.

How can I check the video result?
Compare representative scenes with the source, including motion, dark gradients, fine texture, and bright areas. Look for blocking, banding, judder, or color shifts, and listen for audio changes. These checks help reveal common conversion problems, but whether a difference matters depends on how the video will be watched or edited.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I choose between a preservation master and a delivery copy?
Use the preservation master for the version you want to keep or edit later; use the delivery copy to meet a concrete size or playback requirement. If both matter, make both from the retained original or master rather than repeatedly converting the delivery file.
| Decision | Preservation or editing master | Delivery copy |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Retain fidelity and future editing options. | Meet a recipient, device, service, or file-size requirement. |
| Compression approach | Prefer uncompressed or lossless where practical. | Lossy may be appropriate if size or compatibility requires it. |
| Source properties | Keep relevant resolution, timing, bit depth, color, bandwidth, and channel information. | Change only properties required by the destination or a defined size goal. |
| Compatibility | May be less convenient for playback or transfer. | Should match the target’s supported formats and limits. |
| Future conversion | Use as the source for later versions. | Avoid using as the source when the master or original remains available. |
There is no universal codec winner or bitrate that guarantees the best result. Compare options using the qualities that matter for your case: reversibility, output size, destination support, editing suitability, preservation of the source’s characteristics, and processing demands. For tool-specific settings, consult the current documentation for the converter and codec you use; implementations and available options can vary.

Stop converting the degraded copy and return to the original or the highest-quality master you retained. Then identify which property changed before exporting again.
- Photos look soft or show artifacts: Check whether the export resized the image or used lossy compression. Compare the dimensions with the source and try a lossless or less-compressed master if available.
- Photo colors look different: Check whether the embedded profile was retained and whether the export’s color space matches the intended published version.
- Audio sounds distorted or thin: Check for lossy re-encoding, reduced bandwidth or sample precision, clipping, or a channel change. Start from the original rather than another compressed export.
- Video shows blocks or banding: Review the compression and bitrate settings within the chosen codec, along with bit depth and dynamic range. A larger bitrate may help within that codec, but does not guarantee a result across different codecs.
- Video motion looks uneven: Check whether frame rate or timing changed. If the destination did not require a change, export again from the source while retaining the original frame rate.
- The file will not play at the destination: Determine whether the limitation is the container or the codec. If the destination supports the encoded streams but not the container, remuxing may be enough; otherwise, a compatible transcode may be necessary.
Make one change at a time when troubleshooting. Otherwise, if a new export looks different, it can be difficult to identify whether resizing, compression, color handling, timing, or another setting caused the change.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a lossy file lossless by converting it to a lossless format?
No. A lossless output can preserve the data it receives, but it cannot restore information already removed by an earlier lossy encode. It may also be larger without improving the sound or picture.
Does a larger file always mean better quality?
No. File size depends on the codec, content, settings, and whether the file is compressed at all. A larger export can still have altered dimensions, color, timing, or other characteristics.
Is a high bitrate enough to guarantee a good video conversion?
No. Bitrate is one factor, and its meaning depends on the codec and configuration; comparisons across different codecs are not direct quality rankings. Resolution, frame rate, bit depth, dynamic range, and visible artifacts also matter.
Can I delete the original once I have a converted copy?
If you may need to make another version or revisit the file, retaining the original or a high-fidelity master gives you a better source than a delivery copy. Whether and how to keep another copy depends on your own storage and backup needs.
