For a solo MW4 DMZ Commander hunt, prioritize sustained damage, enough protection to survive a long fight, and a way to stop or escape a third party. A practical general kit is a suppressed Type 73 LMG, a close-range second gun, a 2-Plate or 3-Plate carrier, a Self-Revive Kit, at least two Medkits, and an Ammo Box; switch the second gun for a PILA or RPG-8 when hunting the Tank. Bring a Medium backpack or better with a Secure Slot, and start only when you have an exfil route in mind.
That is a Commander kit, not a copied Multiplayer class. Commanders roam Hajin, cannot be bought as Boss Board intel, and can draw AI and rival Operators. A kill alone is not enough for the 3D Printer Ingredients: you must extract with them.

What makes a Commander hunt different from a normal DMZ run?
Commanders are roaming bosses, not purchased hunts. Activision says they are always present in the Exclusion Zone, appear in different locations, and are marked on the Tac Map when nearby; the Team Leader also warns you when one is close. You can get free Commander information through the Boss Board, but you cannot purchase Commander intel.
Activision describes the threat plainly: “Commanders are roaming bosses that can appear in many different locations around Hajin. Expect fierce resistance when a Commander appears, as they are seemingly impervious against many standard weapons, and may require tactical knowledge to bring down.” The practical implication is to bring sustained damage and a target-specific counter rather than assuming an ordinary rifle setup will do.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The other difference is the risk around the fight. Activision warns: “Engaging one may draw the attention of nearby enemy forces, rival Operators, or squads hunting the same target. Adjust your approach to all these adversaries, control the surrounding area, and be ready to break contact if the fight becomes insurmountable.” For a solo player, ammunition, plates, healing, and a way to disengage are part of the damage plan.
Commanders are not Lieutenants
The Boss Board separates the two. Lieutenants are named hunts, including Gorani, Bale, Jin-Tae, The Doctor, The Chemist, Iskra, Scavenger, Roze, Jang-Ui, and The Warden. You can buy Lieutenant intel with DMZ Cash or climb a Lieutenant Hunt tower; the purchased intel applies to one deployment. Lieutenant kills can drop a Dog Tag Case, which broadcasts your position when picked up. Activision’s warning is: “Pick this up, and your position is broadcast, alerting rival squads. An immediate exfil is critical.”
Commanders do not drop Dog Tag Cases. Their distinct rewards are a DMZ Cash payout the first time you take down a specific Commander and 3D Printer Ingredients if you kill a Commander and extract. Activision has also referred to additional “[CLASSIFIED]” rewards for slaying multiple Commanders, but has not identified those rewards. Community launch-week reporting counts 10 Lieutenants and three Commanders; Activision has not published an official Lieutenant count.
What should a solo Commander loadout contain?
Use the in-game DMZ slots to build for one long engagement and the possible player fight that follows. You can carry two primary weapons, so the first slot can be a sustained-damage gun while the second handles the specific boss or close-range Operators.
| Loadout slot | Solo Commander choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon 1 | Suppressed Type 73 LMG with a 100-round box magazine and armor-piercing rounds if available | Sustained fire for armored targets and AI guards |
| Weapon 2 | ISO Nightshade, PPSh-41, or X-58 Nyx; for the Tank, use a PILA or RPG-8 instead | Close-range defense against Operators, or rockets against a vehicle target |
| Plate Carrier | At least 2-Plate; 3-Plate if available | A solo player has no teammate to revive them |
| Self-Revive | Self-Revive Kit | An additional recovery option if you are downed |
| Headgear | Gas mask | Supports an alternate exfil plan if the regular pad is unsafe |
| Tactical and Lethal | Smoke plus Thermite, C4, Molotov, or Drill Charge | Smoke can help break sightlines; the lethal choice depends on the target |
| Backpack | Medium or larger, preferably with a Secure Slot | Protects keys, manuals, or ingredients from a failed exfil |
| Field Upgrade | Munitions Box or Armor Box | Choose ammunition or extra armor support; look for the other resource in the field |
| Parachute | Bring one | Useful for drops, repositioning, and rotating across Hajin |
The table is a starting configuration, not a promise that every slot can carry multiple items. DMZ’s loadout has Weapons Slot 1 and 2, Plate Carrier, Self-Revive, Headgear, Tactical, Lethal, Backpack, Field Upgrade, Fire Support (Killstreak), Parachute, Dog Tag, and an automatically filled Mission Item. The plate carrier slot fills automatically with the armor you have when you deploy; armor plates do not sit in the pre-infiltration loadout. Extra plate capacity comes from Traits that expand it or from an Armor Box Field Upgrade.
Choose the second weapon for the target
- For Colossus or Deathstalker: keep a close-range SMG in the second slot if you expect Operators to crash the fight. The X-58 Nyx is one published boss-farm pairing with the Type 73; the ISO Nightshade and PPSh-41 are other options.
- For Tank: make the second slot a PILA or RPG-8. A normal bullet weapon is not a substitute for a launcher against this vehicle.
- If you prefer headshots: an Oris 8.6 marksman rifle is an alternative. Community accounts report that its headshots flinch bosses, but it gives up the close-range insurance of an SMG.
Do not bring a valuable weapon you cannot replace
A failed exfil costs gear outside the Secure Slot. Build around a recovered or replaceable weapon rather than risking an expensive Vault or insured blueprint you cannot afford to lose. A Basic backpack has eight slots; Medium backpacks add a Secure Slot that retains keys and manuals if you die. The Secure Slot is especially useful on a run whose ingredients only pay off after extraction.

Which weapon works best against each Commander?
The Type 73 is the most useful starting point for a Commander-focused run because its sustained fire suits targets that shrug off many standard weapons. The broader DMZ weapon meta is not identical to a boss-fight recommendation: the Han 86 remains a strong general-purpose rifle, while a Tank hunt calls for rockets.
| Commander | What you are facing | Solo counter | Reported reward or drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colossus | Armored soldier with a minigun | Type 73 or other sustained LMG fire; Thermite or C4; optional Oris 8.6 for headshots | Community reports commonly identify Military Composites, a Legendary 3D Printer ingredient |
| Deathstalker | Helicopter-sized drone with dual machinegun turrets | Capture and defend a SAM site; otherwise use high-caliber or armor-piercing fire, such as an AP Type 73 | Community reports commonly identify a Prototype RF Module |
| Main NK Battle Tank | Patrolling battle tank | PILA or RPG-8; bring multiple ammunition sources or use a Warhead killstreak if available | Community reports commonly identify Nanostructured Alloy |
The Commander descriptions below are from Call of Duty Staff’s DMZ Deep Dive Part 2, published 9 October 2026. Activision has not published Commander health, armor values, the exact Ingredient each one drops, or iconic-weapon drop rates, so treat the drop names as community-reported rather than guaranteed.
Colossus: sustained damage and cover
Activision describes him as: “A seven-foot tall, heavily armored soldier built for the conditions in Hajin, equipped with a Minigun firing depleted uranium rounds (above right).” Community reports describe a heavy-metal audio cue and green tracers, and say he moves slowly but continues pursuing his target. Use pillars or a vehicle to break line of sight, and fire during pauses between minigun bursts rather than standing in the open. Some players report that his pathing can stick on cars; treat that as an opportunity if it happens, not as a dependable tactic.
Use a sustained-fire LMG, with Thermite or C4 as additional damage options. Community accounts report that Drill Charges do less damage to Colossus after the launch-patch tuning than they did in Early Access. He is commonly described as the longest fight of the three, so a 3-Plate carrier is preferable if you have one. If the surrounding AI or rival Operators make the fight unmanageable, break contact instead of spending every plate and round trying to force the kill.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Deathstalker: capture a SAM site first if possible
Activision describes Deathstalker as: “There are four types of enemy drones active in Hajin. This is a helicopter-sized Autonomous drone adversary mounted with dual machinegun turrets.” The official counter is a captured SAM site. Activision says: “Under your control, the battery automatically targets enemy aircraft, which is particularly useful against Deathstalkers.”
Capture the site before committing to the drone if the route and surrounding AI allow it. The capture triggers a siren and local AI response, so be ready to defend the terminal; stay near the site afterward because enemy forces can recapture it if you leave. Without a SAM, use high-caliber or armor-piercing fire and watch for the reported yellow hit-marker weak spot. Community accounts also describe the wreck breaking into nose, body, and tail loot containers. Do not stand in the open beneath its turrets.

Tank: reserve a launcher and ammunition
Activision describes the Tank as: “A North Korean battle tank on high alert, patrolling Hajin (above left).” Community guidance is blunt: bullets do little and grenades barely scratch it, so bring a launcher. Both the RPG-8 and PILA are reported to work. PILA is listed as a day-one weapon in LoadoutVault’s 2026 weapon table, with 8 RPM and a one-round magazine, making a recovered launcher a possible early option.
One community solo report used about 25 rockets, but that is a player-reported fight, not an official health figure or a guaranteed ammunition requirement. Bring multiple ammunition boxes or fight near an Ammo Cache if you can do so safely. A community solo report says a Vendor Warhead killstreak did most of the damage in seconds; consider it an alternative if available, not a guaranteed shortcut. Community reports say the Tank can be looted at the front, back, and top and commonly yields Nanostructured Alloy, which is used in 3-Plate vest recipes.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is the Han 86 or Type 73 better for a solo DMZ run?
Choose the Han 86 for a budget-friendly general run and the Type 73 when the primary job is sustained damage against a Commander. Community loadout lists still rank the Han 86 highly for DMZ overall, but the Commander-specific kit favors the LMG’s sustained fire; the Tank is the exception that needs a launcher.
| Choice | Best use | What the available figures say | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Han 86 | General DMZ, AI, and Operators; budget weapon after a loss | LoadoutVault’s 2026 table lists 740 RPM and a 30-round base magazine. CODMunity listed the Han 86 Long Range at 34.5% pick rate in its 28 October 2026 revision. | Smaller base magazine means more reload pressure if you have not unlocked or equipped a larger drum |
| Type 73 | Commander and AI-heavy operations | Recommended by MW4 Intel’s 29 October 2026 boss-farm kit and ConquestCapped’s 28 October solo boss kit | Build and attachment availability may depend on your DMZ progression |
| M4 plus PPSh-41 | Fallback when you do not have a Type 73 | WZStats’ 29 October 2026 DMZ buckets label M4 plus PPSh-41 “Extreme Threat” | Does not replace the Tank’s need for a launcher |
| Han 86 plus PPSh-41 | Beginner-friendly general pairing | NoobFeed’s 28 October 2026 recommendations pair them for DMZ | Less specialized for a long armored-target fight than the Type 73 kit |
After the 28 October tuning pass, LoadoutVault’s 29 October consensus across five independent lists gave the Han 86 the average rank of 1 out of 5. WZStats marked the Han 86 as nerfed on 29 October and listed the M4, Kastov 762, and PPSh-41 as buffed. Those are community rankings and tuning summaries, not a guarantee that a general weapon tier list solves a Commander encounter. CODMunity’s 28 October figures also listed the VEL 46 at 13.1% and the Hyeon Burst at 8.6% pick rate; these describe picks, not boss damage.
Upgrade the Han 86 only when it solves a specific problem
If you have recovered a Han 86 and are rebuilding after a loss, the budget path reported by MMOEXP on 26 October 2026 is to keep it unchanged at first. Its listed first upgrade choices were the FSS IS300 muzzle for stealth-oriented routes or the 60 Round Drum if reloads are causing problems. MMOEXP listed each at about 16,000 DMZ Cash and both together at about 36,000 Cash in a reported Gunsmith cart; the source listed the FSS IS300 at weapon level 6 and the 60 Round Drum at level 10. These are reported costs and unlock requirements, not universal guarantees for every vendor or deployment.
Do not spend the replacement kit’s entire budget on both upgrades if that leaves you unable to re-equip after a failed run. NoobFeed’s 28 October 2026 recommended Han 86 configuration lists the FSS IS300 muzzle, Hanbit RK8 406mm barrel, FSS Fireline Grip, 60 Round Drum, and SZ SRE-7. That is a published configuration, not a requirement for a solo Commander hunt; a Type 73 or launcher may solve the more important target-specific problem.

Which Traits should a solo Commander hunter choose?
A practical solo build spends 9 Trait Points in Survivalist and 9 in Warfighter. Activision says an Operator can earn up to 18 Trait Points, with a maximum of 9 in one tree; traits are locked after selection and cannot simply be substituted. The official tree names are Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist.
| Tree and points | Trait path | Solo value |
|---|---|---|
| Survivalist, 9 | Consumable Duration, Free Revive, Die Hard | Supports healing, wound recovery, and survival while crawling |
| Warfighter, 9 | Combat Resistance, Quick Fix, Possum | Reduces certain incoming damage, helps recovery after a kill, and adds a once-per-match survival trigger |
DMZ Tracker’s 24 October 2026 solo build uses this combination. Free Revive heals the first Wound. Quick Fix shortens the regeneration delay after a kill, which can matter during repeated AI waves. Combat Resistance reduces explosive and tactical damage, useful against grenades and some Commander-related threats. Die Hard grants unlimited bleed-out and automatically calls exfil while crawling, according to the community build description.
Possum’s official description is: “Allows a Self Revive into Last Stand from death, restoring health to maximum, once per match.” Call of Duty Staff also says: “A single Operator can earn up to 18 Trait Points.” and “Once you pick a Trait, it is locked in and can’t be substituted.” Because Trait choices are persistent, check the tree before committing points. Some community recaps call Die Hard “Hardened”; use the in-game tree labels, not an alternate guide’s terminology.
Do not spend solo points on Faster Revive or Numb the Pain if their benefit depends on a teammate picking you up. If you already invested in Scout, Overwatch and Thermal Padding are an alternative oriented toward awareness and avoidance: DMZ Tracker describes Overwatch as keeping UAV Towers you activate from expiring and Thermal Padding as hiding you from UAVs. That helps with rotation before a fight, but it is less useful once a minigun is already firing at you.
How should you prepare before deploying?
Get your protection and ammunition sorted before tracking a Commander. Do not start the fight on a Free Loadout or with one plate; a solo player needs a self-revive, healing, and enough spare ammunition to finish or disengage.
- Gear up at the FOB. Equip at least a 2-Plate carrier, Self-Revive Kit, two or more Medkits, and a parachute. Pack an Ammo Box; use an Armor Box if you can craft or loot one and your armor supply is the bigger concern.
- Choose a gun you can actually deploy with. If DMZ Gunsmith is still locked, loot a Type 73 or Han 86 during the run. The Vendor unlocks at DMZ player level 5; Gunsmith unlocks at level 10. Before then, use a Free Loadout, a looted weapon, or a Vendor option once available.
- Pick a target-specific counter. Equip a launcher for Tank. For Deathstalker, plan a route to a SAM site. For Colossus, choose sustained LMG fire and carry a lethal item such as Thermite or C4.
- Plan the exit before the engagement. Identify a nearby exfil, a secondary route, and cover you can use to break contact. Do not treat the nearest visible extraction point as safe just because it is close.
- Keep the initial approach quiet where practical. Use a suppressor while the fight is still optional; launch coverage and field manuals say suppressed weapons help solo players avoid drawing nearby AI. Once committed to a Commander fight, expect the engagement to become loud.
- Use available intelligence before committing. Activate a UAV Tower if the route is safe so you can check for nearby players. If you have Overwatch, its reported UAV Tower benefit can support a longer rotation plan.
The Vendor unlocks at DMZ player level 5, Gunsmith at level 10, the 3D Printer at level 2, and the Boss Board after the second DMZ Order, according to Activision’s 2026 progression information. A 2026 LoadoutVault compilation of Activision launch data lists 33 launch weapons; DMZ player levels run from 1 to 70. Weapon levels and attachment unlocks are shared with Multiplayer, but that does not mean a Multiplayer Create-a-Class transfers into DMZ. DMZ uses its own Traits and loadout slots.

What is the safest way to fight and extract solo?
Treat the hunt as a sequence: approach, control the nearby area, engage only while your resources hold, secure the item, and leave. The fight is not complete when the Commander falls; the Ingredients matter only after extraction.
- Rotate across open ground by vehicle when useful. Watch the fuel and avoid driving blindly into a hot compound. Crouch-walk near likely player positions because footsteps can be loud.
- Clear nearby AI quietly if the situation allows it. Do not farm extra kills in the same compound. The solo guide from ConquestCapped, updated 26 October 2026, says too many AI kills fill a Hostiles Kill Count meter and dispatch a Hunt Squad under “Marked for Death.” A Commander encounter already attracts AI attention.
- Engage only if you still have an exit. When the Team Leader warns that a Commander is close, check your plates, ammunition, healing, and route first. If a Hunt Squad or rival Operators arrive and the fight becomes untenable, break contact as Activision advises.
- Use cover and target-specific damage. Avoid standing in the open. For Colossus, fire between bursts and use hard cover. For Deathstalker, stay out from under the turrets and let the SAM site contribute if you captured one. For Tank, use rockets and plan ammunition before firing the first one.
- Secure the valuable item and leave. Put Commander Ingredients into a Secure Slot if possible, avoid optional PvP, and extract. Activision has not said whether those Ingredients survive a death, so do not assume that a failed exfil preserves them.
- Reassess if you took a Lieutenant Dog Tag Case. Picking one up broadcasts your location. That is a separate emergency from a Commander Ingredient run; prioritize immediate exfil.
A solo player has one free tourniquet revive from Last Stand per match, then returns Wounded with a lower health cap until using a Medkit. The ConquestCapped solo guide says a Medkit removes the Wounded state after a tourniquet revive. Mirae General Hospital and green Clinics are practical Medkit sources. The same guide recommends waiting for final exfil if a called pad is camped; it reports that the exfil helicopter leaves after 30 seconds, while ConquestCapped’s launch coverage says the flare is visible to nearby squads.
Proximity chat and the ping wheel can be used to call a truce or join another squad, but there is no solo-only or PvE-only DMZ mode. A match holds 60 players according to ConquestCapped’s 2026 launch reporting, so a loud boss fight should be treated as a signal other players may investigate.
What should you avoid on a first solo Commander run?
- Do not hunt a Commander with one plate or no self-revive. A solo player has no teammate pickup, and the target may pull more AI into the fight.
- Do not assume bullets solve the Tank. Bring a PILA or RPG-8 and ammunition support; a launcher is the target-specific choice.
- Do not mistake Multiplayer perks for DMZ Traits. Ghost, Ninja, and Tracker Create-a-Class perks are not the Warfighter, Scout, and Survivalist Trait trees used in DMZ.
- Do not buy Commander intel. The Boss Board offers Commander information for free; Commander intel cannot be purchased.
- Do not go deep into an extreme-threat location just to find a boss. Chang-san Air Base bunker, The Grid, and the prison core are high-risk areas where Commanders and stacked squads can overlap; they are poor places to force an underprepared solo fight.
- Do not stay for optional loot after securing the objective. A Commander kill attracts attention, and the extracted Ingredient is the part tied to the crafting reward.
How do the rewards and crafting fit into the run?
Activision says the first time you take down a specific Commander, you should expect a DMZ Cash reward, and that killing a Commander and extracting yields valuable 3D Printer Ingredients. It has not published the exact first-kill Cash amount, the Ingredient assigned to each Commander, or iconic-weapon drop rates.
Community reports put a first Commander kill at about 50,000 DMZ Cash, but that amount is not official. Community accounts commonly associate Colossus with Military Composites, Deathstalker with a Prototype RF Module, and Tank with Nanostructured Alloy; these are not guaranteed drops established by Activision. Treat those as reported outcomes, not a promise that a specific boss will always drop a specific item.
The 3D Printer unlocks at DMZ level 2, but crafting rewards still require the materials. Activision says Recipes and Weapon Manuals pay 5,000 DMZ Cash when extracted. Its example Medkit recipe uses 30 Chemicals, 1 Binding Catalyst, and 5 Biomaterials. That makes the Secure Slot useful beyond a Commander run: keys, manuals, and scarce ingredients can be worth protecting when the rest of the backpack is at risk.

What happens to an Operator after a failed exfil?
A recovered MIA Operator returns without gear, while its Traits remain. Recovery cost scales with the Operator’s Trait Points, so heavily invested Operators can be more expensive to bring back.
Can I keep separate solo builds for different bosses?
Yes. Xbox Wire and DMZ Tracker report two Active Duty slots by default, with a third slot at DMZ level 15; the Vault Edition starts with three. That makes it possible to keep a launcher-focused Tank Operator separate from a more general Commander build.
How many Operators and Traits are available in MW4 DMZ?
LoadoutVault’s 2026 compilation lists 33 Operators, while Activision lists 66 Traits across the three trees. Trait choices are committed rather than freely interchangeable, so inspect an Operator’s build before assigning points.
