You can play Xbox Cloud Gaming on a compatible phone, smart TV or streaming device, or Windows PC by signing in with a Microsoft account, opening the Xbox app or xbox.com/play, and choosing a game that supports cloud play. Most subscription games require an active Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate plan; selected free-to-play games, including Fortnite in supported regions, can be played with a free Microsoft account. Check device and regional support before you start, and have a compatible controller ready for most titles.

What do I need to play Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Cloud Gaming streams a supported game from Microsoft’s servers to your screen, rather than running the game locally on your phone, TV, or PC. That means your device, internet connection, account and the game’s cloud-play eligibility all matter.

  • An account and the right access: Subscription cloud titles require an active Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription. Game availability and plan entitlements vary. Selected free-to-play games can be started with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
  • A supported device: Examples include Windows PCs, Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads, Xbox consoles, and select Samsung, LG, and Amazon smart TVs or streaming devices. Compatibility depends on the model, operating-system version, and region.
  • A suitable way to control the game: Most games require a gamepad connected by Bluetooth or USB. Some games offer touch controls, mouse, or keyboard support, but input options depend on the game.
  • A stable internet connection: Xbox’s FAQ gives 10 Mbps download speed as a minimum and says some devices need 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox Wire recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable cloud-gaming connection.

Those speeds are guidance, not a guarantee of smooth play: Wi-Fi congestion, signal strength, and other activity on your connection can affect performance. For a stronger connection, Xbox recommends Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or 5G where available.

How do I play Xbox Cloud Gaming on my phone?

On a compatible Android phone or iPhone, open a supported browser, sign in at xbox.com/play, and select a game with cloud play. The required operating-system version and controller options differ between Android and Apple devices.

Android phones and tablets

  1. Check that your device runs Android 12 or later.
  2. Open a supported browser such as Microsoft Edge or Chrome and go to xbox.com/play.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account that has the required Game Pass plan, or use a free account for an eligible free-to-play game in a supported region.
  4. Choose a cloud-enabled game and start it. If the game requires a gamepad, connect one through Bluetooth or USB before playing.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Check that your iPhone runs iOS 14.4 or later, or your iPad runs iPadOS 14.4 or later.
  2. Open Safari or another supported browser, visit xbox.com/play, and sign in.
  3. Select a cloud-enabled game. Connect a compatible controller if that title requires one; games with supported touch controls can be played without a gamepad.
  4. For app-like access in Safari, tap Share → Add to Home Screen. This creates a Home Screen shortcut; it does not change which games or subscriptions your account can access.

Fortnite has a separate free-to-play route: its official page confirms that iPhone and iPad users can play through Safari using a free Microsoft account, without a paid subscription. Availability is limited to supported regions.

Can I play Xbox Cloud Gaming on my TV without an Xbox?

Yes, if you have a supported smart TV or streaming device and the Xbox app is available for that specific model and region. You do not need an Xbox console for supported TV cloud play, but you do need to sign in, connect a compatible controller, and select a cloud-enabled game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the exact TV or streaming-device model and software version appear on Xbox’s current supported-device list for your region.
  2. Install or open the Xbox app on that device.
  3. Sign in with your Microsoft account and the plan required for the game you want to play.
  4. Pair a compatible controller with the TV or streaming device, then select a cloud-enabled title.

Xbox identifies select Samsung, LG, and Amazon devices as supported, not every product made by those manufacturers. Check compatibility before buying a TV or streaming device for this purpose: supported models, software versions, and regions can change.

How do I play Xbox Cloud Gaming on a PC?

On a Windows PC running Windows 10 version 20H2 or later, use the Xbox app or a supported browser such as Microsoft Edge or Chrome. Sign in, open Game Pass in the app or visit xbox.com/play, and choose a cloud-enabled game.

  1. Check that the PC meets the Windows 10 version 20H2 requirement or is running a supported later version.
  2. Choose the Xbox app or open Microsoft Edge or Chrome.
  3. Sign in to your Microsoft account. Use an account with the required Game Pass plan for subscription cloud titles, or a free account for an eligible free-to-play game in a supported region.
  4. In the Xbox app, open Game Pass; in a browser, go to xbox.com/play.
  5. Select a cloud-enabled game. Use a compatible controller for most titles, unless the game supports another input method you prefer.

A PC can be convenient if you want a browser or app route and the option to use wired Ethernet. Cloud streaming still depends on the connection quality between your PC and the service.

What controller works with Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Xbox says most games need a gamepad connected to the device, wired by USB or wirelessly by Bluetooth. Its listed options include Xbox controllers and verified third-party controllers from 8BitDo, GameSir, Backbone, and Sony DualSense; compatibility can depend on the device and game.

Xbox Wireless Gaming Controller | Electric Volt | Textured triggers and bumpers, Hybrid D-pad, XBOX Wireless, Bluetooth, USB-C, Play across Console & PC & Cloud Devices
  • MODERNIZED DESIGN — Experience the modernized design of the XBOX Wireless Controller with sculpted surfaces and updated geometry that enhances comfort and control during long gaming sessions.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

Check that the controller can connect to your specific phone, TV, streaming device, or PC before relying on it. A controller pairing successfully does not mean every game supports every input feature. Some games can instead be played using touch controls, mouse, or keyboard, but those options are title-specific.

What internet speed do I need for Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Xbox’s FAQ lists 10 Mbps download speed as a minimum and notes that some devices need 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox Wire recommends at least 20 Mbps to help provide a stable connection while cloud gaming.

For the most dependable connection available to you, Xbox favors Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or 5G. A speed reading alone cannot promise a good session: the actual experience can also depend on connection stability, signal quality, and whether your network is busy. If play is choppy, try moving closer to the router, using Ethernet where practical, or reducing other activity on the connection.

Which is better for Cloud Gaming: phone, TV, or PC?

There is no single best device for everyone: choose based on the screen and controls you prefer, what you already own, and whether that exact model is supported. The practical differences are portability, input options, and app or browser access.

Device Best fit Setup route Key consideration
Phone or tablet Portable play; selected games may offer touch controls. Supported browser at xbox.com/play. Check iOS/iPadOS or Android version requirements and whether your chosen game needs a controller.
Smart TV or streaming device Playing on a larger screen at home. Xbox app on a supported device. Compatibility is limited to select models, software versions, and regions; a controller is needed for most games.
Windows PC Playing on a computer, with a choice of app or supported browser. Xbox app or supported browser at xbox.com/play. Windows 10 version 20H2 or later is specified; a wired Ethernet connection is an option.

For any device, verify that the particular game supports cloud play and that your account has access to it. A compatible screen or app alone does not make every Xbox game streamable.

Why can’t I start a game or get it to run smoothly?

Most setup problems come down to one of four checks: device compatibility, account entitlement, game availability, or connection quality. Work through them in that order before changing several settings at once.

  • The game is missing or access is denied: Confirm that the title supports cloud play and that your plan includes access to it. If it is a free-to-play title, confirm that the game and service are available in your region.
  • The game launches but controls do not work: Connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB, or verify that the specific game supports touch, mouse, or keyboard input.
  • Play is unstable: Check the connection and try Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or 5G where available. Xbox’s guidance is 20 Mbps or more for stability; its FAQ identifies 10 Mbps as the minimum, with 20 Mbps needed on some devices for best quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Chromebook?

The supported-device details here specify Windows PCs and selected mobile, console, and TV devices; they do not establish Chromebook compatibility. Check Xbox’s current device guidance for your Chromebook model and region rather than assuming browser access guarantees support.

Do cloud games use storage on my phone or computer?

Cloud Gaming streams the game from Microsoft’s servers instead of running it locally, so the game itself is not installed on your device as part of this setup. Your browser or app may still use ordinary cache or app storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use my phone as a controller when playing on a TV?

Phone-as-controller support is not established in the compatibility details here. Plan on pairing a compatible gamepad with the supported TV or streaming device unless Xbox’s current instructions for your exact setup say otherwise.

Can I play a game I own without Game Pass?

Ownership by itself does not establish cloud access. Cloud eligibility and access depend on the game, plan entitlements, and region; check the title’s current cloud-play listing and the access terms for your account.
