Steam Link does not create the multiplayer invitation. It is the receiving client that streams the host PC’s game and sends the guest’s controls back. For remote local co-op, the host must launch a game that supports Remote Play Together, open the Steam Overlay with Shift+Tab, and invite the friend from the Friends list. The friend then accepts in Steam and can play through Steam Link or another supported Steam client.
If the invitation never appears, check game eligibility, update Steam on both systems, launch the game once on the host, verify both accounts are online, and retry from the in-game overlay. If the friend joins but cannot control the game, treat that as a separate input-streaming or controller problem. If Steam Link cannot find the host, investigate firewall permissions, network isolation, and restricted Wi-Fi before changing stream quality.

What is the difference between Steam Link and Remote Play Together?
Steam Link is the streaming endpoint; Remote Play Together is the multiplayer feature. The host computer runs the game. Steam sends its video and audio to the invited player, while the invited player’s controller or other supported input is sent back to the host.
This distinction explains many failed setups. Opening Steam Link alone does not add online multiplayer to a title. The game must support Remote Play Together, or it must provide its own native online multiplayer. Remote Play Together is intended for games that expose local multiplayer, local co-op, shared-screen, or split-screen play through Steam’s feature.

The host owns and launches the game. An invited friend does not necessarily need to own or launch a copy for Remote Play Together, but the friend must be logged in to Steam on a supported device and must accept the invitation. Valve’s current Remote Play overview says the feature can support “up to four players, or more with fast connections”; treat that as the capability stated on the official page rather than a guaranteed player count for every game or network.
What do I need before sending an invitation?
Gather these prerequisites first. They prevent you from troubleshooting Steam Link when the real problem is game eligibility or account state.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- A supported game: Open the game’s Steam store page and look for the Remote Play Together capability. Local multiplayer alone is not enough if the developer has not enabled the Steam feature.
- An updated Steam client on both systems: Update Steam on the host and the friend’s device before trying again.
- A host PC that can launch the game: Start the game at least once on the host. This confirms that it runs normally and lets Steam initialize the title.
- A logged-in friend on a supported device: The friend should be signed in to Steam and visible to the host as online or in-game.
- The Steam Overlay enabled and available: The invitation is sent from the in-game overlay, opened with Shift+Tab on the host PC.
- A network that permits Remote Play: Avoid guest Wi-Fi, public networks, workplace or school networks, captive portals, and access-point/client isolation. These can allow ordinary internet access while blocking the device-to-device traffic Steam needs.
Do not start by changing video resolution or bitrate. Those settings address stream quality, not whether the game is eligible or whether an invitation can be delivered.
How do I invite a friend through Steam Link for local co-op?
Use Steam’s Remote Play Together invitation flow, then let the friend use Steam Link as the receiving client.
- Update Steam on both systems. Have the host and friend install any pending Steam client updates, then restart Steam if it requests one.
- Verify the game’s store-page feature list. Confirm that the title advertises Remote Play Together. If that label is absent, skip invitation troubleshooting; use the game’s native online mode, another supported title, or another remote-play method instead.
- Launch the game on the host PC. Start it normally and wait until the game reaches its main menu or playable state. Launching it once before inviting also confirms that the host can run the title independently.
- Confirm presence and status. The friend should be logged in to Steam on a supported device. The host should see the friend in the Friends list, and both players should see the relevant online or in-game status.
- Open the in-game Steam Overlay. Press Shift+Tab while the game is running. Use the Friends list inside the overlay rather than relying only on a separate chat window.
- Choose the friend and select “Remote Play Together.” Right-click or select the friend’s entry, then choose the Remote Play Together command. The exact visual placement can vary with Steam’s current interface, but the command belongs to the overlay’s Friends list.
- Have the friend accept. The friend accepts the invitation in Steam and enters the session through Steam or a supported Steam Link client. The host continues running the game; the guest receives the streamed picture and sound.
- Assign controls in the game. Once connected, check the title’s local multiplayer screen. Some games require the guest to press a button to join, select a character, or be assigned a second local controller.
Remote Play Together streams video, audio, and voice between the players while each uses a controller, where supported. Games can also support shared keyboard and mouse control, but the game’s own local-player design determines what inputs are accepted.

Why is my Steam invite not showing up?
First identify the failure stage. A missing invitation, a connection that never starts, and a guest who joins without controls require different fixes.
| What you see | Most likely scope | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| No invitation appears | Game eligibility or Steam client state | Remote Play Together label, Steam updates, online status, overlay invitation path |
| The invite is accepted but the session does not start | Game launch, firewall, or Remote Play connectivity | Game still running, host network restrictions, Steam firewall permissions |
| The friend joins but cannot move or select anything | Input streaming or controller configuration | Steam Link input setting, controller pairing, game’s second-player requirements |
| Steam Link cannot see the host PC | Network discovery or isolation | Guest/public Wi-Fi, client isolation, captive portal, firewall access |
| The session starts but video stutters | Stream quality or network capacity | Remote Play performance overlay, connection type, and only then stream-quality settings |
If no invitation appears
- Recheck that the game’s store page displays Remote Play Together. A normal local co-op label without Steam’s feature does not establish eligibility.
- Update Steam on both systems and restart the clients.
- Launch the game on the host and leave it running.
- Confirm that the friend is logged in on a supported device and that both accounts display the expected online or in-game state.
- Open Shift+Tab inside the game and send the invitation from the overlay’s Friends list.
- If Steam offers it for that title, use the Invite Anyone option to create or copy an invitation link. This is an alternative invitation path, not a way to make an unsupported game work.
If the invitation is accepted but the session will not start
Keep the game open on the host and check whether a firewall or restricted network is blocking Remote Play. A router can provide ordinary web access while preventing the host and client from communicating with each other. Check the network conditions in the section below before assuming that Steam Link itself is defective.
If the failure is intermittent
Record the exact game, which account is hosting, the client device, each network type, the step at which the process stops, and the steps that reproduce it. That information is useful if you need to contact Steam Support and avoids treating different failures as one generic “invite problem.”
Why can’t Steam Link find my computer?
Discovery failures usually involve firewall access or network isolation, not the game’s graphics settings. Steam’s documented Remote Play ports are UDP 27031 and 27036, and TCP 27036 and 27037. The host firewall must allow Steam to listen on the relevant ports.
- Check the network type. Move both devices off guest Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi, workplace or school networks, and networks with a captive or gateway login page. Steam says Remote Play is not supported on those restricted network types.
- Disable client or access-point isolation for the test. Some routers deliberately prevent wireless clients from reaching one another. This can make the host disappear even though both devices can browse the internet. Change the setting only on a network you administer, and restore the intended security policy afterward.
- Review firewall permissions on the host. Ensure the operating system firewall allows Steam to communicate on the active network. A firewall rule can change after a Steam or game update, so a setup that worked previously may need its permission reapproved.
- Check the documented ports. Use the UDP and TCP ports above when reviewing firewall or network rules. Do not assume that permanent router port forwarding is required; the appropriate action depends on the network, and Steam’s guidance emphasizes allowing Steam through the firewall.
- Complete any captive-portal sign-in. Hotel, airport, campus, and other gateway networks may require a browser login before they allow traffic. Remote Play is not supported on networks that rely on this type of portal.
- Retry discovery after each change. Close and reopen Steam Link or restart the Steam client after changing a firewall or router rule. This makes it clear which change affected the result.
For a connection that is visible but choppy, open Steam’s Remote Play performance overlay. It helps separate a network problem from another streaming problem. If the issue is that the host cannot be discovered at all, start with firewall, isolation, and network type rather than reducing image quality.

What should I do when my friend joins but the controller does not work?
Treat this as an input problem, not an invitation problem. The guest may be connected successfully while Steam Link is not forwarding the expected controller input or the game is waiting for a particular local-player action.
- Enable input streaming. In Steam Link settings, confirm that input streaming is enabled. Steam maintains a dedicated Steam Link Input and Controllers support path for this setting.
- Reconnect the controller. Disconnect and re-pair the controller, or reconnect its cable. Then test it in the Steam Link interface before returning to the game.
- Start with a standard gamepad. A conventional gamepad-style controller is the clearest first test. Wheels, flight controllers, and other specialized DirectInput devices can require title-specific handling.
- Check the game’s local-player rules. Some games expect a second controller, a keyboard-sharing action, or a particular control layout. The guest may need to press a join button or choose a character before movement becomes available.
- Check keyboard and mouse sharing only if the title supports it. Remote Play can share keyboard and mouse control where supported, but that is not universal and may conflict with the host’s own controls.
- Test outside the game. If the controller does not respond in the Steam Link interface, continue with pairing and input-streaming checks. If it works in the interface but not in one title, focus on that game’s local input configuration.
A wired USB game controller can be a useful troubleshooting choice because it removes wireless pairing variables. It is not a universal cure for unsupported games, failed invitations, firewalls, or restricted networks.
Can I use Steam Link when the normal Steam invitation fails?
Yes, but Steam Link is not a replacement for the invitation mechanism. The host still needs a supported Remote Play Together game and must create a session through Steam. Steam Link can then serve as the guest’s client for receiving the stream and sending input.
If the standard friend invitation is missing, try the overlay’s Invite Anyone flow when it is offered for the game. If that option is unavailable, the title may not support it, the Steam client may need updating, or the game may not expose Remote Play Together. An invite link cannot bypass a game’s eligibility requirement.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Should I use a wired connection or a different controller?
Use physical accessories only when they match the symptom. A wired USB game controller is relevant when the friend has joined but cannot provide input. An Ethernet cable or other wired network connection is relevant when the stream is unstable or local discovery is unreliable, but it does not fix a missing Remote Play Together label or a disabled overlay.

Make reversible changes first: test the controller in the Steam Link interface, try a non-guest network, or temporarily use a wired connection. Avoid making permanent router or firewall changes until you have identified the failure stage. If a wired connection improves discovery or stream stability, the underlying issue is likely wireless interference, bandwidth, or network isolation rather than the invitation itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can I isolate the problem quickly?
Use this decision path instead of repeating the full setup after every failure.
- Does the game list Remote Play Together? If no, stop. Use native online multiplayer or another supported title.
- Can the host launch the game normally? If no, fix the game or host installation before inviting anyone.
- Can both players see one another online in Steam? If no, correct account status or client state first.
- Does the overlay show Remote Play Together? If no, update Steam, relaunch the game, and verify the overlay is available.
- Can the friend accept the invitation? If no, retry through the overlay and consider Invite Anyone when available.
- Does the session start but Steam Link cannot see the host? Check firewall permissions, the documented ports, guest/public networks, captive portals, and client isolation.
- Does the friend connect but lack control? Enable input streaming, re-pair the controller, test a standard gamepad, and check the game’s local-player setup.
- Does everything connect but the stream stutter? Use the Remote Play performance overlay to distinguish network conditions from other streaming issues, then consider a wired network test.
What should I tell Steam Support if none of this works?
Give Support a reproducible description rather than only saying that Steam Link fails. Include the game title, whether its store page shows Remote Play Together, the host and client devices, Steam client versions after updating, network types, whether the invitation appeared, whether it was accepted, and whether the failure was discovery, session startup, stream quality, or input.

What is the practical answer?
Use Steam Link to receive the stream, but use Remote Play Together to invite the multiplayer guest. Confirm the game’s eligibility, update both Steam clients, launch the game once on the host, invite from Shift+Tab, and then troubleshoot the specific stage that fails. Missing invitations point to eligibility or Steam state; invisible hosts point to firewall and network restrictions; joined guests without controls point to input streaming and controller configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the invited friend need to buy the same game?
Remote Play Together is designed for the host to run the game while an invited Steam Friend joins the local-multiplayer session remotely. The friend does not necessarily need to own or launch a copy, but still needs a Steam account, a supported device, and an accepted invitation.
Is router port forwarding always required for Steam Remote Play?
No. Steam documents the Remote Play ports and says the host firewall must allow Steam to listen, but the correct network action depends on the router and network design. Check firewall permissions and client isolation first rather than forwarding ports automatically.
Why does a game advertise local co-op but not Remote Play Together?
The developer controls whether Remote Play Together is enabled for the Steam title. A local multiplayer mode by itself does not guarantee that Steam’s remote feature is available, so use the store-page capability label as the eligibility check.
Can a guest use keyboard and mouse instead of a controller?
Some games support shared keyboard and mouse control through Remote Play, while others require a second gamepad or a specific local-player layout. If the guest connects but cannot act, check the title’s own control requirements after confirming input streaming is enabled.
